Just Waiting a Little Too Long for Stardom

When Talented Young Star (TY) started losing weight, she received praises for achieving a toned body. However, when TY started becoming more visible on TV and social media, many viewers noticed that TY has lost much weight, and that she seems to be obsessed with losing more. Before she lost weight, she already looked good, but still, she received comments that she was a bit on the hefty side. As the image projected on TV adds 10 pounds to the real weight, TY took a second look at her body.

Over the years, TY has lingered on the verge of being launched into full stardom. She has the talent, as she can sing, dance, and act. Sometimes, she even roles in her network’s various teleseryes. TY also had her share of reality search shows, which paved the way for her discovery of the network. As she embarked on a solo career, the network saw potential with pairing her off with Good Looking Singer (GL). TY and GL had a following, and fans raved about their performances. TY even had a major concert, which was sold-out. Her album sold well, too.

Unfortunately, not everything was made to last. TY and GL went on separate ways. When investors took another risk in producing a concert for TY in a bigger venue, they miscalculated. However, despite the unexpected low turnout, TY gave it her all. That crucial moment pulled TY back to reality in such a hard way. Yet, she must move on. As she was leaving her teens, TY had to transform her looks and get rid of the baby fat. She did lose weight, but her weight loss soon started to trouble people.

Although TY had already denied she was anorexic, what was adding to her losing weight was her frustration. TY allegedly is feeling impatient as she has been in the business for some years, and she has not really achieved stardom. Then, her successful partnership with GL had to breakup. Even if they did not formally admit they were a couple, their performance added that certain high that came from screaming fans. To relieve her depression, TY is allegedly undergoing psychological therapy to improve her disposition.

As her last show folded up, TY is still lucky, as her network has given her various projects that will still showcase her acting, singing, and entertaining skills. Hopefully, TY can achieve her rightful place in her field. It would be a pity if her network were to lose her to another station.

No matter how I might feel about myself or my self-image, there is still a part of me that wants to fight to the end. - Willie Aames

Careless Words of Actress Leads to Being Ignored

One of the glaring characteristics of the Filipino culture that has resulted from cheap technology is the love for taking pictures. Every moment is taken as potential opportunity for selfies. Thus, proliferating in social media accounts are pictures of food, animals, shoes, legs or hotdogs, etc. Matching this passion for taking photographs is the eagerness to have photos with celebrities. Thus, a celebrity, regardless of the field, should be prepared to spend time for a quick photo with a fan. However, not all celebrities have this mindset, as some still have the thinking that they can have privacy even if they are in public.

Outspoken Actress (OA) and Hunk Actor (HA) were checking in at a terminal at an airport. OA and HA were with several other talents. Naturally, the ground personnel were starstruck and some took a few seconds to have selfies with the talents. After having a photo with HA, the crew requested if they could have one with OA. Instead of quietly posing with them, OA kidded that the reason why the airline is plagued by complaints of long queues and inefficient system is that the crew are always having photos with celebrities. Although she said it jokingly, the crew decided not to pursue their request.

On flight, the flight crew were welcoming and having photos with celebrities except for OA. They completely ignored OA and did their work as always. However, the treatment was quite obvious and made OA like an outcast. Apparently, the flight crew got word of the treatment of OA of the ground crew. Thus, OA got what she wanted, which was to be ignored and not treated like a celebrity.

Incidentally, fans are hoping that OA and HA admit that they are already a couple. After hitting it off in a TV project, the two were then paired in movies. Although their love team has a following, their fans have yet to prove they can propel the two to box-office status. While OA and HA are busy with their careers, both have opposite images. OA is rumored to be driven by work, while HA is bugged by stories of his slow attitude towards work. In contrast to the friendly image of HA towards fans and other personalities, OA is known to lack tact and has caused friction with personalities as a result of her opinion.

Tact is one of the first mental virtues, the absence of it is fatal to the best talent. - William Gilmore Simms

Ramon Ang Slaps GMA's Gozon with Estafa Complaint

The business tycoon says the Gozons never returned his P1-billion downpayment for the purchase of a minority stake in the broadcast network, despite the breakdown of talks

Business tycoon Ramon S. Ang filed an estafa complaint against GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe Gozon and his family members for allegedly swindling him of P1 billion ($21.87 million) in their talks for Ang to buy shares in the TV network.

In a 19-page complaint filed with the Department of Justice on July 27, Ang accused Gozon and 9 other GMA stockholders of committing syndicated estafa. The crime is a non-bailable offense.

Ang said the Gozons never returned his P1-billion downpayment for his planned purchase of 34% of GMA7’s shares – despite an agreement stipulating a return of the money should negotiations eventually fail.

The talks between both sides collapsed in June. GMA Network announced the breakdown of negotiations through a disclosure at the Philippine Stock Exchange, catching Ang by surprise.

He dropped hints then that he was considering legal action. “I am consulting with my lawyer and I am awaiting for an explanation."

Aside from the Gozon patriarch, also charged were the family members of the Gozon group of the FLG Management Corporation, namely Felipe M. Gozon Jr., Anna Teresa Gozon-Abrogar, and Ismael Augusto S. Gozon. Other respondents to the case were stockholders of GMA Network Belinda G. Madrid, Ma. Erlinda G. Gana, Jaime Javier Gana, Florencia Gozon Tarriela, Edgar Tarriela, and Tricia T. Valderrama.

Ang spared other GMA major stockholders in the complaint, such as Menardo R. Jimenez Sr. of the Jimenez group and Gilberto R. Duavit Jr. for the Duavit group, because he said both parties indicated their intention to return the downpayment.

Ang, CEO of conglomerate San Miguel Corporation, alleged that all the elements of estafa are present in the case. “First element: Money received in trust or under obligation to return the same; second element: Misappropriation or conversion of such money by the offender; third element: Prejudice or damage and; fourth element: Demand.”

The businessman argued: “It is public knowledge that prior to the transaction with the undersigned complainant (Ang), the respondents had also sought investments from other people, most prominently Mr. Manuel V. Pangilinan of Metro Pacific Investments. After the transaction with Mr. Pangilinan did not push through, the respondents negotiated with the complainant (who is obviously a member of the general public). While the sale to the complainant likewise failed to push through, respondents succeeded in defrauding him of his P1 billion downpayment which respondents misappropriated."

Check in Gozon's name

Ang said the manager's check that he paid amounting to P1 billion ($21.87 million) was in the name of the Gozon patriarch.

The case is yet another twist in the Ang-GMA saga.

As early as June 2014, Ang announced that the planned acquisition of at least 30% stake in GMA was a done deal. The shareholders of GMA and Ang were in fact looking at signing the purchase agreement as early as November 2013.

The breakdown in talks last June 2015 was the fifth time that the broadcast giant terminated acquisition talks with a possible investor; and analysts said it could be because of a higher offer or a price no one can afford.

Some stock analysts speculated that the broadcast network might want more than what Ang had offered.

In Ang's complaint before the DOJ, he cited the so-called term sheet containing the obligation for both sides to negotiate in good faith during the "exclusivity period" covering the negotiations.

The exclusivity period was originally until April 20, 2014 and extended until June 30, 2014 and was further extended – through mutual consent – until it finally ended on November 15, 2014, according to Ang.

Following the exclusivity arrangement, Ang said he deposited P1 billion ($21.87 million) as his downpayment through a manager's check payable to Gozon, who shall hold the money in trust for the othe major stockholders, Ang said.

“It was also expressly agreed that in the event the terms and conditions of the transaction documentation are not finalized and concluded by the parties within the exclusivity period, the downpayment *shall be returned to the purchaser *not later than 3 working days from the expiration of the exclusivity period without need of any further notice or demand,” Ang said.

The Gozons never returned the money, he claimed.

Asked for comment, GMA Network vice president for corporate communications Angel Cruz replied in a text message Monday: "We have not received a copy of the complaint. Our legal counsel will respond accordingly in due time."

The DOJ is expected to form a panel to look into the merits of the case and whether it can stand in court.
