Actor Nonie Buencamino ‘Believes Daughter Committed Suicide’
Nonie Buencamino (foreground) appears in this scene from the movie ‘Barber’s Tales.’ Buencamino has issued a waiver to dispense of a formal police investigation on the death of his daughter, Julia Louise. Behind Buencamino is actress Eugene Domingo.

Pending any formal investigation, actor Nonie Buencamino has concluded that his daughter, 15-year-old actress Julia Louise Buencamino, committed suicide inside their house in Quezon City Tuesday night.
Buencamino, 49, has “executed a written waiver manifesting not to pursue the investigation as they fully believed that their daughter committed suicide,” said Police Officer 2 Virgilio Mendoza of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit of the Quezon City Police District.
Julia Louise, the youngest of Buencamino’s four children with actress Shamaine Buencamino, was found hanging from the ceiling of her bedroom’s bathroom at about 8:20 p.m., Tuesday, according to a report of case investigator Victorio Guerrero.
Probers said the girl was found by their household help Elsa Orsales. A “nylon rope was looped around her neck,” they noted.
Orsales reportedly sought help of the victim’s brother, Gregorio Martin, 22, who rushed Julia from their house in Corinthian Gardens to the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City, where she was declared dead on arrival at 8:46 p.m.
Police said that while Buencamino and his family “fully believed” that his daughter killed herself, they had yet to establish that her death as a suicide.
Julia was part of ABS-CBN’s daytime series “O My G!
Amid the report of Julia’s death, a private foundation concerned about the effects of depression on people is offering help, especially to those having suicidal tendencies.
Established in 2007, the Natasha Goulbourn Foundation (NGF) said its counselors were ready to listen to those battling depression or feeling suicidal.
They can be reached through (632) 804-HOPE (4673) or 0917-558-HOPE (4673). Globe and Touch Mobile subscribers can also dial 2919 toll-free . The organization also has Facebook and Twitter accounts.

My Desires Just Got Interrupted
Appeal is a factor that determines the staying power of celebrities in showbusiness. While talent is a must, generating attraction is important in gaining fans and admirers. When Irresistible Looker (IL) entered the business, he had both appeal and talent. IL was lucky enough to have been given a break by his network early in his career, and he was being groomed as the next serious actor of his generation. However, things did not go well as planned, and IL had to postpone his dream for some time. Again, luck was with him as he was able to regain his footing and his appeal to fans was stronger than when he started.
With renewed attitude in his career, IL started to look into other activities that can keep him busy and fit. A common interest among showbiz personalities nowadays is getting into sports, such as boxing, wrestling, and martial arts, among others. As IL is determined to keep in shape, he started hitting the gym and sweating it out in his favorite sport.
Naturally, media shows are interested in the passion of IL, and thus, one program sent Busy Network Personality (BN) to make a feature on IL. BN was tasked to cover IL and being interested herself, she asked IL to teach her some moves. After a few rounds, both were sweating, and sweat marks formed around certain body parts of IL. The sight of IL all sweaty proved to be too much for BN. Thus, after getting enough footage, BN instructed the team to go back to the station so they can edit the video.
Left alone with IL, BN asked for more tutorials. IL obliged, but he said that he had to prepare for his appointment in a few minutes. After a few more lessons with BN, IL grabbed a towel and proceeded to the shower area. Feeling excited for IL, BN followed. Within a few seconds, IL’s Significant Other (SO) arrived and looked for him. When she saw a woman’s bag, SO asked the attendant who owned the stuff. The attendant said that the owner was BN, and as soon as SO heard the name, she rushed to the shower room.
When SO saw that BN was about to enter the shower room, she screamed. As BN has a certain reputation and a rumor that already linked her to IL, SO called her out. At the top of her voice, she told her, “Stay away from my boyfriend!” As the screaming reverberated in the area, tensions were high, and a catfight was about to happen. Interrupted in his shower, IL had to step out of the area and stop the impending scandalous scene between BN and SO. BN had no choice, but to retreat. She gathered what was left of her pride, got her bag, and walked away feeling disappointed that nothing happened between her and IL.

Letter from a Reader: GMA Employee Reveals GMA Practices in Relation to their Loss in the TAG Case
Hi FashionPulis,
I am working in GMA 7 for the longest time. I would like to share something about the latest development ng station.
If you would notice sa mga Instagram and Facebook posts nina Xxxx Xxxxxxxx, Xxxxx Xxxxxxxx, Xxxxxx Xxxxxxx, et. al. natanggal sila sa kanilang mga beat.
4. 70% na i-regular na ng GMA Network ang case filers but they have hidden agendas na kung saan one wrong move, you are out. Kaya ginagawa ng Network na magtanggal at maghigpit sa mga empleyado because of TAG. It will boil down to them. Na TAG ang dahilan nang lahat ng ito.
Please post our situation. Nakakapaso ang kainitan sa network ngayon. Maraming nadadamay. Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Disgruntled GMA Employee

Engaging in the Risky Game May Not be Worth It Later On
Male actors, especially the leading man material, have to be conscious of maintaining the image of what their fans want from them. When fans want the male actor to be “the boy next door” type, he has to appear to be one and be conscious of his actions in public. He has to be charming to fans, nice to parents, and cordial to everyone even if he is in a bad mood. Networks even sponsor events, such as visits to the orphanage, relief centers, and home for the elderly, to show that such actors project that they have a caring heart.
Often, the lead actor has to hide his relationship if the network and the fans will not approve of his choice. Fans can be very possessive and networks know that if fans lose interest, the career of their talent will not anywhere. The good side is that if the lead actor is really involved with someone the fans like, the network and his management can sigh in relief. However, the problem lies if the actor is merely someone who acts the role. Thus, regardless of how hard a network builds and invests in an image, boys will always be boys.
During a lull, Sightly Performer (SP) was talking with his peers. Their conversations were so candid that their mothers would have been embarrassed at what they were exchanging notes for. Naturally, the number one topic of boys would be girls. SP and his friends decided to go through the list of female actresses in their network. First on the list was The Girl (TG) who was being paired with SP. With a straight face, SP said his relationship with his screen partners, such as SP, is merely professional. He said he does not feel anything for SP, but he has to pretend that he can woo her, as fans like them together. Besides, he likes the screaming fans and the accolades that go with it.
One of the Actor Peers (OP) then asked SP blankly whom among the girls he likes most. With eyes wide open and a sheepish smile, SP said that seeing Young Actress (YA) thrills him and makes him feel like a man. However, OP said that YA is untouchable as she already has a Male Partner (MP), and the network does not like doing crossovers. SP retorted that he can persuade YA, and MP is just work for her. OP said that he was willing to bet that SP will fail. SP is not one who will back out of challenges, as it makes him even more excited. The boys shook hands.
Unknown to OP, SP was very confident because he sensed that like any typical girl, YA has the hots for him. He knew that he was very hard to refuse as he has the looks, the moves, and the charm. Well, through emissaries and his effort, SP managed to convince YA to go on a date with him and OP had to part with his money. After that initial meeting, SP and YA hit it off, but they still have to be cautious. They have to be clandestine, as being seen together would ruin the bankable image the management has worked so hard to make for them and of course, earn the ire of rabid and possessive fans. Thus, unless they have the go signal of the network, which would be disastrous now, they cannot be seen together in public and any rumored encounter involving them would have to be adamantly denied.
"There is a charm about the forbidden that makes it unspeakably desirable." - Mark Twain

Downsizing Workforce Inevitable as PH TV Surfs the Digital Wave
DOUBLE-EDGED DIGITIZATION. Most TV networks in the Philippines are forced to downsize their workforce and spend more to stay afloat in today's digital wave

The major telcos are not the only ones affected by the digital transition. Television broadcasting is also making the move to digital.
TV executives are redefining their business models as they navigate the television industry's shift to a multimedia sphere.
Local broadcast giants, such as GMA Network, Incorporated and ABS-CBN Corporation, have seen their traditional supremacy in delivering news and entertainment shift in today’s multi-platform and multimedia space.
As most of their viewers now consume news through Twitter, Facebook and other social media channels, TV networks are forced to embrace the Internet while still maintaining accuracy and trustworthiness.
“It’s not the future. Digitalization is today. Physical capital barriers have crumbled as ‘open content’ on the Web undermines the traditional scheme of delivering news,” ABS-CBN chief digital officer Donald Lim said on the sidelines of the Philippine Marketing Association event in June.
The changing landscape for the Philippine television industry has pushed networks to streamline their workforce and retain employees who understand the threats and opportunities that the digital world presents to their business.
ABS-CBN’s Lim confirmed that his company is doing a manpower reduction program this year, although he did not say how many the network is targeting to lay off. Sources inside ABS-CBN tell Rappler these moves began with SSP or Special Separation Program in 2014.
An unverified news report in May, however, quoted ABS-CBN chief finance officer Rolando Valdueza saying “less than 200 employees nationwide will be affected during the ongoing digitalization of the company.”
He also said in the news report by Manila Standard Today that the aim of the manpower reduction was not to reduce costs, but rather “to get people as we prepare for the shift into digital services.”
ABS-CBN has around 8,500 employees, including those of units ABS-CBN Global and Sky Cable Incorporated.
Its rival GMA Network in April laid off around 100 reporters, video cameramen, and drivers in its regional offices in Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, and two other cities. The network cited declining revenues, redundancy in workforce and additional capital for digital shift as reasons for the retrenchment.
The network’s job cuts will likely continue in its main office in Quezon City, with president and CEO Felipe Gozon saying: “We’re done with regional offices, but here in the main office, we still have to know by how many [are we going to layoff]; we’re constantly reviewing.”
Downsizing inevitable
“Downsizing workforce is inevitable. It is part of digital age. It’s a reality, all of us will have to plan for. We need to lay off. That is part of the business. We are experiencing it now,” ABS-CBN’s Lim said.
“If you look at it now, you’re not earning as much as you did 10 years ago. That’s given. So it’s a race toward how do you adapt. In the end it’s business," Lim added.
"Regardless of public service, everything else, it’s still a business. You can only give so much. You can only protect the country so much but in the end you have to earn. You have to have that balance,” Lim explained.
However, for CNN Philippines, its president Benjamin Ramos said in a phone interview: “We have no plans of reducing manpower. For us, we started off small, around 600 employees. Other networks are cutting off staff because they started big and now they need to reduce. For us, we do not have to. In fact, we need more staff.”
Rappler tried to call and text TV5 officials but they could not be reached since May.
ANALOG SHUTDOWN. All local networks will need to shut off their analog TV by 2019, NTC says.
Additional capital
Not only that. Television in the Philippines is on the verge of a major change, as the country aims to completely replace the current analog cable networks with a digital system by 2019.
Local broadcast networks have earmarked significant amounts in their budgets to finance the digital shift.
This was after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) in December 2014 finally cleared the way for the country’s shift to Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcast (DTTB) system. This means all local networks will need to shut off their analog TV systems and shift to DTTB.
“The migration plan, or when to shut off analog TV, will be by phases and NCR (National Capital Region) will be the first one. The shift will start by 2019," NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba said.
"No analog TV operation shall be allowed after the analog shut-off, which will be set by the agency," Cordoba added.
ABS-CBN, GMA, and TV5 has allotted more than P500 million to build the infrastructure needed to roll out DTTB.
TV5 President and CEO Emmanuel Lorenzana told reporters in September 2014 that his network is investing "anywhere from P500 million ($11.21 million) to P700 million ($15.69 million) across 3 to 4 years for digital TV; the amount will be used to build our infrastructure and transmission." Lorenzana added that the company will complete the upgrades "earlier than 2020."
ABS-CBN’s Cerrado meanwhile said his company "already spent around P2 billion ($44.84 million) for infrastructure and it’s already built."
For GMA, Gozon said his network allotted "about P2 billion ($44.84 million) to P3 billion ($89.68 million) for infrastructure alone," including transmission and equipment to ready for the digital migration.
"Thanks to a thorough review of our business needs vis-à-vis our capabilities, and the industry situation as a whole, all transmitter and other upgrades that were already in the pipeline were still being implemented despite our belt-tightening," Gozon said.
For CNN Philippines, Ramos said his company is targeting to start to migrate to digital TV within the year, but he did not disclose how much it is allocating for the shift.
Redefine business model
"As early as today, telcos and networks are experiencing pressure on both revenues and margins from numerous sources, including increased competition, new engagement models, and new regulations that are forcing them to adapt to the changing landscape and be more competitive," Alberto said.
According to IDC's Alberto, operators have measures they can implement to help themselves survive and thrive in the coming years.
They can "redefine their business model; invest in data compression technology for better management of growing data volumes; and make the most of the service levels on their networks," Alberto said.
Alberto added that if they do not act now, business will continue as usual, but operators will face drops in margins and end-consumers will experience a continued decline in network service quality.
The outcome, the IDC country head said: a "sort of digital dead end."
