Court of Appeals Orders Filing of Rape and Acts of Lasciviousness Against Vhong Navarro, Atty. Ferdinand Topacio Releases Statement

It is said that the wheels of justice grind slowly, but it grinds exceedingly fine. This is the case in the complaint for rape and acts of lasciviousness of Ms. Deniece Cornejo against actor Ferdinand “Vhong” Navarro in 2014.

Ms. Cornejo, when she first publicized the charges against Mr. Navarro, was subjected to widespread public ridicule and savage personal attacks on her character, background and family ties to an extent that is rarely seen in the Philippines, and reserved only for the most vicious criminals, although Ms. Cornejo was clearly the victim. This relentless and brutal tri-media assault on Ms. Cornejo was aided and abetted by Mr. Navarro’s home studio and his colleagues therein, who had access to all of the said studio’s media platforms which were used in such character assassination. She was charged with serious illegal detention, arrested and jailed for more than eight months until, after a hearing for a petition for the granting of bail wherein I represented her, she was provisionally released.

We in the Citizens’ Crime Watch (CCW) have never wavered in our belief that Ms. Cornejo was the innocent party, and that she was a victim two times over: first, of sexual assault, and later by trial by publicity wherein she was painted as the culprit, and Mr. Navarro as the innocent victim. Mercifully, after all these years, such doublespeak was proven untrue, and Ms. Cornejo now stands vindicated.

As always, we have always believed in the justice system, and we continue to stand staunchly behind Ms. Cornejo in her long, painful journey to seek the truth and expose the lies against her for all to see.

Our family is truly grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of support and well wishes.

The wake for Former President Fidel Valdez Ramos will officially commence this Thursday, August 4 at Heritage Park, Taguig. Guests are encouraged to wear white. To help us manage the flow of guests and better adhere to COVID-19 precautions, we have designated certain dates and times for groups and sectors. We thank everyone for their cooperation. We also thank the Office of the President, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and our many friends and supporters for their assistance with these arrangements.
