Why You Should Watch the 65th Miss Universe Competition LIVE

What a year 2016 has been! I think that as this year draws to a close, we all deserve something to be happy about. I personally wanted a big something to look forward to this coming 2017, so I treated myself to a VIP ticket to the 65th Miss Universe Competition, happening on January 30 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena!

It has always been a dream of mine to watch this extraordinary event in person, and finally, my chance is here. Here are some reasons that set a live Miss Universe Competition experience from the telecast.

First, it’s been 22 years since the Miss Universe Competition has been held in the Philippines (the last time was in 1994, with Miss Philippines-Universe Charlene Gonzales as our bet). The next chance to experience this historical mega-event in person might come again after a couple of decades.

Second, there are no commercial breaks when you watch the event live at the SM MOA Arena. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand the endless parade of commercials shown during live telecasts of important events. I want to be completely immersed in my Miss Universe experience!

Third, when you watch something live, you don’t get filtered-out content. You see everything live as the event unfolds. How I wish I’ve witnessed what happened behind the scenes of last year’s Miss Universe Competition, when Steve Harvey mistakenly pronounced Miss Colombia as the winner. Imagine the surprise and jubilant cheers of the Filipino crowd when Steve manned up and corrected his earlier mistake, and announced our very own Pia Alonzo-Wurtzbach as the true queen! I’m thrilled to see what goes on in the venue when the cameras aren’t rolling!

Fourth, you get to share the same venue with international celebrities and key figures in showbiz, sports, fashion, and more. The last 2014 and 2015 competitions are undoubtedly star-studded. Past celebrity competition judges include fashion maven Nina Garcia, Manny Pacquiao, legendary music producer Emilio Estefan, Laguna Beach star Kristin Cavallari, Real Housewife of Beverly Hills Lisa Vanderpump, Clean House host and comedienne Niecy Nash, Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo, and blogging phenomenon Perez Hilton.

Fifth, there will be performances from your favorite artists that you don’t want to miss. For the 2014 edition of Miss Universe, Grammy Award nominee Gavin Degraw, and Billboard Chart-toppers Nick Jonas and Prince Royce prepared special productions for the gorgeous candidates. The 2015 competition saw memorable performances from Seal (also known as supermodel Heidi Klum’s ex-hubby), The Band Perry, and multi-awarded pop sensation Charlie Puth. I’m one of those people who eagerly await the musical numbers, and I’m sure that the 2016 artist line-up won’t disappoint.

And finally, you get to share the excitement with the most energetic and passionate pageant fans in the world—your fellow Pinoys! Whenever Pinoys are cheering for anything—be it beauty pageants, boxing matches, or basketball games—you can’t help but be swept up in the energy they exude. Former queens Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz and Miss Universe 1973 Margie Moran are also excited to share the joy of watching the competition live with their fellow Pinoys.

Getting a Raw Deal

Semi-Retired Actress (SR) has always been known for being candid and oftentimes, outspoken. Thus, small talk with her peers does not really pertain to anything serious, but rather, just mere conversations that do not really intend to harm others. Conversations could just be ways to raise concern or vent out on certain issues. However, when Veteran Actress (VA) saw SR and Talented Celebrity (TC) talking during their break, VA immediately assumed she was the topic of the serious conversation of the two.

Sometime ago, SR was all set to leave showbiz and live a quiet life somewhere far away. Although her Appealing Husband (AH) could continue his career, they had already thought of starting their new life with their children. Living abroad would result in a quieter life that is far from intrigues. However, AH has a steady career, although he might not be as famous as before. Meanwhile, SR has moved from one network to another, but her participation in the project with VA and TC was highlighted as she was going dramatic, which was a talent that she was not really known for.

Correspondingly, VA was correct with her assumption that she was being talked about by SR and TC. SR was allegedly telling TC her concern about the odd behavior of VA on the set. SR observed that VA would sometimes engage in conversation without any person in front of her. Sometimes, VA would even argue with the production staff and at one point, VA got irked at the attitude shown to her by some people in the network. As SR was not used to seeing VA in such state, she told TC her concern.

However, VA would not let go of what she presumed. Throughout the taping, she would make statements that alluded to SR. SR, not wanting to get into any mess, did not retaliate. Then, one day, SR was called by the production and was informed that VA was really mad. SR was shocked because it seemed that professional behavior was amiss. Nonetheless, the character SR played was given an early exit, which disappointed her fans who had long awaited for her screen appearance. Incidentally, VA happened to be closely related to a production head, and thus, it was assumed that she had influenced the decision to get rid of SR. At any rate, all these do not matter anymore, as their project had a short-lived run on TV.
