38th Gawad Urian Awards 2015 Winners

The winners of the 2015 Gawad Urian Awards have been announced by Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino and Cinema One. The awards ceremony was held Tuesday, June 16, hosted by Angelica Panganiban, Robi Domingo, and Butch Francisco.
The evening began with a shadow play performance from Asia's Got Talent champions El Gamma Penumbra. Veteran actress Nora Aunor was honored with a lifetime achievement award. Rising star Darren Espanto was among the performers.
Lav Diaz's Mula Sa Kung Ano Ang Noon won several awards, including Best Director for Diaz, Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Editing. The film picked up the prestigious Golden Leopard prize at the Locarno film festival held in Switzerland last year.

Like Mother, Like Daughter

“Mother knows best” is an adage that has proven its worth in so many families in and out of showbiz. In the entertainment industry, several mothers have been known to be domineering in the rise and fall of the careers of their children. Some mothers are even more notorious and meticulous than managers, and sometimes, networks have imposed bans on such parents. Nonetheless, family takes priority, and when a talent is a big star, the network has to consider requests from parents, even if it goes against the career tracking of the said star.
What happens if the child is struggling in the network, and the parent, regardless of clout, cannot really do much but wait for whatever project the network can give? Then, the Creative Parent (CP) must think of ways to make sure that the life of the child must be comfortable, even if that means resorting to breaking some of society’s norms. Belonging to showbiz for several decades, CP has had a share in the ups and down of one’s career, and the same has happened to the children who are in the business.
CP is known to belong to an influential group of showbiz personalities. When someone is in trouble, this group comes together and extends help to each other. Their children have grown with each other, and the group has seen the transformation of each other’s kids into attractive adults. Having good genes, the daughters of CP have transformed into attractive women.
Daughter 1 (D1) has had her share of heartaches, but has been perceived to have risen above the situation. However, she has yet to be seen in project that can sustain the public’s interest in her. Sometime ago, a rumor about her and a member of the powerful group surfaced (Read Desperate Measures). Allegedly, despite the tense situation in their families, they are still at it. The consequence is that one of the members of the said group has stopped talking to CP.
The story does not end with D1. Another Daughter (D2) is allegedly having her own time with a much older, but low profile Powerful Personality (PP). Although PP is not part of showbiz, he has ties with some showbiz personalities. In fact, PP is involved with Showbiz Personality (SP), who resurfaces in media every so often to respond to certain issues involving her equally controversial background. However, a feisty public response of SP to this issue will mean admitting finally that she is indeed with PP, which is something that SP has neither denied nor confirmed in the past years.
As parents would want the best for their children, the question is if CP has any idea as to what D1 and D2 are doing. Being involved with committed men would have its consequences, such as the wrath of the aggrieved partners and severed family and friendship ties. One of these days, these activities of D1 and D2 might just find their way into tabloids and the embarrassment would be tremendous. The worst part is hearing, “Like mother, like daughter,” being alluded to CP, D1, and D2.
