Epic Fail: Catching His Unguarded Moment

The gauge of good acting is based on the responses from the audience. When an actor plays the role of the maltreated lead and elicits sympathy from the public, then he/she achieved the ideal in acting. Similarly, contravidas are often assumed to be mean in real life. Often, the opposite is true, and a close and unguarded moment with an actor often exposes the true personality. This lesson was learned by one of the major anchors (MA) of a network.
Over time, MA was so impressed with Dramatic Performer (DP) that she instructed her staff to schedule him for an interview for her program. Based on the roles DP had portrayed in several of his hit dramas and the way he carries himself, MA assumed that he was as intelligent and profound as well. The staff paid DP a visit to set the interview. At the set, DP’s assistant received the questions for the interview and presented them to DP. The staff said they wanted to get a glimpse of the ordinary life of DP as well as his plans for his career as his teleserye was about to end. Follow up questions might be asked spontaneously, but since MA was not really known for stirring controversy, her line of questioning was deemed safe. The assistant returned, and said that DP was okay with the questions.
Just as when the staff thought everything would go smoothly, they were shocked with the next request. The assistant asked the staff to write the answers to their questions, so that these replies can be flashed on the teleprompter, and DP would just read them. The staff raised the point of spontaneity, as the interview was free-flowing. Besides, the answers should be from the point of view of DP, and DP’s natural reactions were important. The assistant then said that he would just be the one to write the answers, as DP will be tired to even think of his replies to the questions as he was shooting a big scene.
When MA found out what happened, she realized that DP was indeed a very good actor because he had managed to convince her that he was as intelligent as the characters he portrayed. Nonetheless, she kept poised and conducted the interview in her usual style, but this time, a teleprompter was behind her. When their cameras rolled, DP did his role quite well. He answered her questions convincingly, paused, and smiled every so often, as the non-verbal cues were also written on the teleprompter as well. However, MA could not feel the authenticity of DP throughout their interview, and she, too, had to act to hide her dismay at how DP opted to be interviewed.
Acting is a nice childish profession - pretending you're someone else and, at the same time, selling yourself. –Katharine Hepburn
