Caught Unaware

Early in the history of the entertainment industry, insiders thought that good looks, talent, and appeal were enough to propel someone into stardom. Then, during the time of LVN and Sampaguita Pictures, even the backgrounds of potential stars were scrutinized and a wholesome image was deemed necessary. Starting in the 60s, stars were discovered in ordinary situations and talent prevailed. Looks became secondary. During the 70s, guts proved essential as bold movies were taking over the cinemas. The later decades deemed talents, looks, guts, and connections as elements to make a star.
In this century, technology has changed the search for the next star. Thus, looks and talent were relegated behind social media impact via voting for favored talents in reality shows. As years passed, no formula to discovering a star can be truly implemented. This lesson was learned the hard way when networks were caught flatfooted with the phenomenon of a loveteam (LT).
To investigate this development, Top Honcho (TH) requested a Network Executive (NE) to research on the sudden rise to fame of LT. The foremost questions were why their network did not anticipate LT and what formula was a show applying to sustain the popularity and rise of LT. Diligently, NE did as requested and became frustrated with what she discovered.
The other half (OH) of LT was actually featured in one of their shows (TS) not only once, but allegedly twice! As OH is entertaining, being shown in TS was not surprising at all. However, TS is not a live or a talk show. Perhaps dismissing that OH was merely limited to cyberspace, not much attention was given to her until LT happened. After being featured in TS, OH guested in the rival network and was discovered by a show.
The level of frustration of NE was quite high. Her station had OH, but let her go, as they were probably blind to her potential. They failed to see that so much could be done to her talent, which a show is now exploring slowly. Unfortunately, TS suddenly got axed and the host lost his gig. This move was surprising because TS was interesting and entertaining. After the notice of cancellation, TS was replaced by a show of a different genre.
In the case of OH, her rise to fame deviates from any known formula that has made an unknown person into a superstar. Worse, the path taken by OH seems impossible to replicate. The network of TS tried to follow such direction, but has miserably failed.
