Letter from a Reader: The Copy and Paste Food Blogger
Image courtesy of Fashion PULIS reader
Hi Fashion Pulis!
I would like to draw your readers’ attention to a food blogger’s (FB) penchant for copy-pasting. FB is a self proclaimed foodie, yet when it comes to writing about wines FB resorts to copying the winemaker’s notes verbatim, without crediting the sources.
To illustrate:
You can tell how weak FB's wine knowledge is with a simple slip-up like this:
There’s really no shame in admitting that FB does not have a good knowledge about wines, but FB should at least have the decency to admit this. Proper citation is a very basic rule of writing, and as someone who makes a living from writing, FB should know this full well and be more responsible about it.
FB's lifting isn’t limited to wine though. In a post about Vietnamese cuisine, I spotted these passages:
If you scour FB's blog you’ll find more snippets like these. It’s easy to tell which lines aren’t original because FB's real writing is different, so whenever a sentence is uncharacteristically well-composed, chances are FB simply copied it from somewhere, like a press kit provided by the establishment or company. There’s nothing wrong with referencing the press kit, but if FB is simply too lazy to paraphrase then FB should use quotation marks!
Plagiarism (whether borne of intent or ignorance) has always been something I strongly deplore, and I can't stand seeing someone gain so much popularity while passing off other people's writing as his/her own. Sadly, in our country intellectual theft isn’t taken seriously (hello Tito Sotto). I can only hope that this FB realizes the error of copy-pasting.
Thanks Fashion Pulis for helping bring this to light.
Yours truly,
Elle

Backfiring Assumptions

After a tumultuous event, Intriguing Actress (IA) finally found Someone Interesting (SI) online. Yes, IA had ventured in cyberspace to give love a second try. Soon, IA developed feelings for SI and asked him to come over to town. Unfortunately, IA found out that SI was not as well off as she had hoped him to be.
When SI came, IA had to be the gracious host, and thus, supported his needs. SI allegedly is staying with IA and is trying to make a career in the competitive culinary field. The irony here is that someone in IA’s past used to be in culinary as well. While restaurants are springing left and right in the country, putting up a restaurant with a foreign chef still requires much investment. If SI intends to establish himself, he has to offer something unique but attractive to the local foodies. Moreover, he has to be able to convince investors to support his endeavor.
Given that IA is still trying to reestablish herself in her genre, generating the money to support her alleged lover will be challenging. Before spending on anyone else, IA has to think of her children and other legal battles that have come her way in the past years. With such situation, however, IA seems to be amiss in some of her financial commitments. Some are pointing out that she might be spending on SI at the expense of neglecting to pay her obligations. Hopefully, her creditors will not make public such financial matters, as IA needs all the positive vibes to revitalize her struggling career.
Looking back at the life of IA, several points standout. First, at the height of her career, she had a series of movies that showcased her range of talents and she established a reputation for being one of the country’s finest actresses. Second, when IA loves, she is passionate to the point that she will readily give up her career. Third, IA can be quite feisty when it comes to issues involving her, and thus, she was, at one point, a favorite subject for media to cover. Finally, the many challenging moments in her life taught IA to swallow her pride, at least for the project she needs to sustain her lifestyle.
