Inday Barretto: Gretchen Did Not Work for Us

MANILA – The matriarch of the Barretto family continued her tirade against daughter Gretchen Barretto, denying that the actress took on the role of parent to her siblings and even gave up her schooling to enter showbiz.

In a statement she sent to “The Buzz” on Sunday, Inday Barretto urged Gretchen to “stop putting yourself up by putting us down.”

“Just remember that my house, which you call less than your criteria, was what gave you a roof over your head, food on your stomach, clothes on your back when you were a nobody and had nothing! All you wanted was to hitch your wagon to a star and the world gave you the moon as well,” she said in the statement.

“You still have to bash us with lies and pasikat up to when Dad and I are about to close our eyes! The trouble with lies is you have to tell more lies to back it up!” she continued.

Furthermore, Mrs. Barretto responded, point by point, to Gretchen's assertion that she worked in showbiz to help her family.

“Issues and allegations: 1. Gretchen stopped schooling to stand as bread winner of the family - to pay for the rent, electricity, food and schooling of her siblings!

“Answer: At the age 12 modelled for a line of clothing, P1,000 per pictorial. At 14, she did a movie ‘14 Going Steady’ P20,000 per project, followed by two more movies I cannot remember. One or two more endorsements, maybe of the same amount. A total of P100,000. By the time she joined showbiz, three of her siblings were already done with school and well on their way,” she said.

“She was only with us for three years. By the time she changed into adult roles and earning better, she was already living in with (basketball player Joey) Loyzaga and our family were already in Iloilo to spend little time with my 90-year-old mother. And Daddy wanted to go into prawn farming,” she added.

Mrs. Barretto said they may not be rich but she also maintained that they were never poor.

“Our family had a comfortable lifestyle long before she was born and up to the present. No way will we let a 12-year-old child work for us. Family and friends can attest to that,” she said.

The feud among the Barrettos started when the family matriarch released a statement last Wednesday, announcing that she is disowning Gretchen.

Mrs. Barretto defended her daughter Claudine against the allegations of Gretchen, who had supposedly criticized her younger sister for "bashing" their niece Julia on Instagram.

Following this, their brother Joaquin also issued his own statement claiming it was actually Gretchen who once “put food on the table, paid for the rent, electricity and hospital bills when dad suffered.”

Gretchen and Claudine have yet to speak on the issue.

Gretchen's Best Friend Counters Sister's Claims

MANILA – The best friend of actress Gretchen Barretto came to her defense amid an ongoing feud involving the actress, her siblings and their mother Inday.

In an interview with “The Buzz” aired on Sunday, former actress Tanya Montenegro countered most the claims of Gretchen’s sister Gia, who collaborated with their mother’s earlier statement.

“Hindi sila rich, hindi rin sila poor. Middle. Beautiful houses? Those houses were rented. Contrary to the [statement] na they had chauffeur, no because it was always Jay-Jay, their brother, who would take them to school in their yellow car,” Montenegro said.

When they were in grade school, Montegro shared that Gretchen would normally go to school with only enough food for recess or lunch but it was very seldom that she had enough for both.

Montenegro said there was also a time when Gretchen was not able to take their exams because of her unpaid tuition.

“I begged my mom ‘Baka you can come and talk to Father Rodriguez and ask if he can just allow Gretchen to take the exams kasi they are sending her out of the room,’” she said.

As for Gia’s statement that each of them had nannies, Montenegro said: “As far as I recall from the stories of Gretchen sa akin, they never had a maid. They had one that was living with them and they call her Naning.

Naning is her mom's sister. Iyon ang nag-alaga sa kanila.”

Gia earlier said that Gretchen’s claims -- as revealed in their brother Joaquin’s statement -- of financial support for their family have no basis since their father always managed to provide.

“For the record, we may not have been so rich but we were never poor. 1. We live in big beautiful houses. 2. Slept in carpeted, air-conditioned rooms. 3. Food galore. 4. Put in an exclusive school. 5. Members of exclusive country clubs. 6. We each have our own yayas, yours even a midwife. 7. Driven by chauffeurs," Gia said.

Meanwhile, Montenegro said Gretchen loves all her nieces and nephews, as much as Claudine does.

“Si Gretchen, sobra niyang mahal lahat ng pamangkin niya. Actually ang tawag ng mga pamangkin niya sa kanya, Mama Gretchen. Even kay Claudine, mama din. Very close sila sa mga bata eh,” she said.

According to Montenegro, what Gretchen went through when she was still young was a no joke.

“She grew up na emotionally deprived of love from the parents. Because if you noticed Gretchen, when she sees a friend, she's very huggy. Si ‘I love you’ iyan eh. When I asked her before why, sabi niya 'Wala lang because I never got this from my parents. I never felt love. I was never hugged,'” she shared.

Asked if she thinks Gretchen was abused as a child, Montenegro said: “Ako ang masasabi ko sa mga nakita ko, there was one time, I will never forget this, I saw her in school siguro mga grade 6. She had a big bruise here (near her jaw). Sabi ko what happened? Tapos she started crying. Hindi ko na pinilit na magkwento kung bakit. I saw that bruise.”

Following this, Joaquin and Gia also addressed the issue. Gia sided with her mother and youngest sister, while Joaquin sided with Gretchen, saying Claudine's "condition" should be addressed.

Gretchen and Claudine have yet to speak on the issue.

Gretchen Barretto Mum on Reconciliation with Mother Inday

MANILA – Socialite-actress Gretchen Barretto kept her silence when asked if she is open to patch things up with her mother Inday, who recently disowned her and called her a “liar.”

"I have no answer for a possibility of reconciliation," Gretchen said in a statement she sent to “The Buzz.”

According to "The Buzz" host Boy Abunda, Gretchen is choosing to keep silent amid their ongoing family feud because she is still hurting.

Abunda said Gretchen is saddened because the controversy her family is currently embroiled in reminds her of all the difficult times she had to endure in the past.

While she has yet to speak on the issue, Gretchen, on Thursday, took to the image-sharing site Instagram to express her gratitude to everyone who continuously support her in this trying time.

“Thank you. I'm won't deny I'm hurting but I thank God still for all those who continue to love me,” she said.

Mrs. Barretto released a statement on Wednesday defending her daughter Claudine against the allegations of Gretchen, who had supposedly criticized her younger sister for "bashing" their niece Julia on Instagram.

Julia was recently introduced as an artist of Star Magic, the ABS-CBN talent management firm that launched Claudine to stardom until her transfer to another network in 2009.

Gretchen's brother, Joaquin Barretto, coming to the defense of his sister, issued a statement on Wednesday night, expressing shock over their mother's allegations.

He also appealed to his mother to "put a stop to this before our family totally falls apart while there is still something to save."

Meanwhile, Gia, another Barretto sibling, sided with her mom and youngest sister Claudine.

She said Gretchen’s “claims of financial support for this family have no basis, because dad always managed to provide.”

Gia also echoed their mother's appeal to Gretchen to stop hurting their family and just disappear from their lives.

Not Keen On Being Friends

Celebrity host CH and popular make-up artist PM were once bff’s (best friends forever) and were really inseparables. For more than a decade, PM did all of CH’s personal and professional  make-up needs, accompanied CH everywhere she went, and treated each other like family, like sisters, with CH giving PM her all-out support both personally and professionally.

But in any relationships, some things can come up along the way that can unwittingly break even the strongest of relationships.

To people around them, CH and PM helped each other in many ways. PM did get to earn big from being CH’s personal make-up artist MUA, what with all of CH’s many projects that needed PM’s services almost on a 24/7 basis. Whether it was an agreement they both had, being “exclusive” to each other  was an arrangement that seemed to work very well for both of them. Or so PM thought.

Over the years, some things and attitudes will change. While CH was very convenient and comfortable with such arrangement, it wasn’t always the same for PM. PM allegedly felt that there were many missed opportunities as she glided along with CH’s day in and day out. She felt, she was too trapped in CH world that she longed for her own, too… to spread her wings. After all, she is a celebrity stylist whose services are sought after by the rich and famous.

PM got paid studio rate for every make-up service she did for CH. But when she started getting calls for weddings which paid a lot more - at least P25,000 for bridal make-up - that’s where trouble began. Whether being shy or not wanting to hurt CH’s feelings, PM resorted to some “white lies” to service others outside of CH. She didn’t ask CH’s permission everytime she moonlighted for other clients. This happened regularly. When told about it, CH expressed disappoinment, saying that she would have understood if she were told the truth.

One day, PM called in sick and told CH she  would not be able to come and do her make-up for an event. CH said okay.  In an event that night, CH met a veteran actress VA who was a close friend. CH complimented VA for her very nice make-up. CH was shocked when VA proudly replied, “ Oh yes, this was done by PM, no less!”

That proved to be the last straw. CH is now happy with GS, one good and  skillful MUA.
