Overheard Controversial Private Conversation

If you, dear readers, are familiar with “Hills Like White Elephants,” a short story by Ernest Hemingway, you will find this blind item so much like it. In the story, a couple engages in a dialogue without directly implying their concern. All that was clear was that they were going out of town, and the man was encouraging the woman to get rid of “it.” Much like the couple in the short story, character actress (CA) and model turned actor (MT) were overheard talking about a similar concern.

CA and MT were spotted doing some serious PDA in a restaurant. After a while, both became seriously involved in conversation. The other diners and the staff did not mind what CA and MT were doing but when CA and MT left, those who overheard the talk tried to speculate the seriousness of the conversation between CA and MT.

MT was allegedly heard asking CA if she were sure about “it.” Then, he said that they could go abroad. A few minutes later, CA was heard asking MT as to why she should not keep “it.” Later on, MT said, “your tummy isn’t that big yet.” The fragments of the conversations left the curious listeners wondering if CA were indeed pregnant.

At the height of her career, which was years and years ago, CA had a controversial post-break up scenario. She was in hot water for allegedly using some resources she should not have. Having atoned and shrugged off that relationship, CA resumed her career by playing supporting roles for the teleseryes of her mother network. Meanwhile, the highlight of MT’s career is getting meaty supporting parts in the other network’s primetime shows. As for his personal life, MT took responsibility in admitting he is a dad.

Coincidentally, CA and the mother of MT’s children work in the same network. There is nothing to worry about because MT and the mother are civil to each other and at one point, they were even thought to have reconciled for good. However, they parted ways, resumed their careers, and went on to have other relationships.

Will CA and MT admit or dismiss this story? Maybe in a few months, we will know.

Lousy Attitude Continues

Actor-endorser (AE) has to be careful in his actions and unguarded statements because his behavior is getting to be a turn off to people around him. While his network has done wonders to keep interest in him, AE is showing attitudes that have become bothersome, as more and more negative feedback continue to tarnish his name. Since he has been linked to the more popular talents of his network, AE has been branded a user. Initially, he was said to be a crush of a comedian host, and that association made people curious about him. Now, his name is attached to a prized and popular discovery (PD) of the network. Given that PD has the talent and the fans, AE is definitely gaining mileage from their love team

Stories have it that AE already has some demands when it comes to procedures involving him and PD. For example, every time they have a show, both of them have to enter the stage together. This strategy makes it seem that the fans are screaming for both AE and PD and not just PD,  since it will be risky if the screams die down when AE enters alone or after PD. Another story is that AE is allegedly making it a bit difficult for the production as he is reportedly taking much time before he gets to the show's venue. He prefers staying and killing time inside his vehicle, rather than bonding with his co-stars or getting ready on the set. Clearly and often enough, AE chooses to isolate himself.

The worst story so far is that AE was overheard calling the press “dead-hungry” (patay gutom) after he gave them a treat at the food chain he is endorsing. Granting that he said this statement in jest, it was so uncalled for and definitely left a bad taste in the mouth. Has AE forgotten what the press can be capable of doing to hurt his career?

When asked to comment about all the negative issues surrounding him, AE merely shrugged them off. Perhaps, AE should be reminded that other than being in a major network -  professionalism and a good PR (press relations) can not be without the other if he wants to last in the business.

The Arrogance of the Big Winner

How much does it cost to begin a career in showbusiness? Others have career because they have familial connections, or their parents are established actors. Others get spotted by a talent scout or agent and their skills are fine-tuned through workshops. Others use their bodies to gain favors. However, the most common and shortest route to a career nowadays is joining reality shows or talent searches.

Networks invest in airtime to make the new faces familiar, and encourage the creation of a fan base. Some fans are hooked to the point of obsessively following the careers of their idols on and off camera. The former big winner (BW) in a reality show is no exception to this phenomenon. Although BW’s season did not generate as much interest as the previous seasons of the show, the contestants gained sufficient following, thanks to its loyal viewers. To stretch further interest in that show, love teams were encouraged. Hence, the pairing of BW with a tattooed female contestant (TF) gained a significant number of followers.

The BW-TF fan base has several groups and recently, these groups are having misunderstandings over issues. These issues stem from BW's attitude. Some groups are claiming that BW does not seem to acknowledge the existence of his fan base. They reiterate that they did their best to drum up interest in BW and TF after the reality show ended.

For example, they planned a meet-up (GTG in internet slang) with BW and TF. As the day came nearer, BW said he only knew of such an event from Twitter. The group claims that BW was always tagged. 

Nonetheless, BW could not make it because he had a provincial show to go to. Hence, no GTG happened. The fans feel neglected because they feel that BW is detached from them. Other fans are labelling the attitude of BW as a manifestation of arrogance.

Although BW is a product of a reality show, he cannot reason out that he does not know how to handle his fans. These days, fans are all over social networking sites and even blog sites. These are the same fans who voted for him to be the big winner. The same fans can extend his career, or cut it short if he does not shape up. Even if a network invests in a performer, as long as the fans are alienated, then that performer can only go so far.

Now that the show is over, BW should realize that his winning alone can not sustain his fame as much as his fans can. They may be sensitive, but gaining fans' loyalty would reap more than enough for any performer’s career. As some fans wished BW would realize that before it's too late. Otherwise, "Good luck," is the only thing they can wish for at this point.

Just Making the Most of His Time

Award-winning performer (AP) went abroad for a series of shows for the Filipino community. Often, most local talents underestimate their recognition-factor everytime they go abroad, and they take the risk of doing what they want away from the prying eyes of local fans. AP made the most of his time and thought he would not be recognized while he walked along the streets of the city where he just had a performance a few days ago. AP was spotted hurriedly entering a famous, upscale bathhouse in that city. He was with three other men, and they were very discreet as they approached the door.

What is a bathhouse? A bathhouse is a place where gay men meet other gay men to engage in certain activities. Because of the sensitivity of the activities, bathhouses are often exclusive and services are through membership only basis. Bathhouses have private rooms, saunas, whirlpools, etc. Certainly, there are rules and protocol to observe. Men go to bathhouses to engage in the activities and no one is allowed to be a killjoy by staying in one corner and be a mere observer. In that city, bathhouses are licensed, unlike in Manila, where bathhouses are illegal and often the subject of police raids and media feasts.

Ever since he started his career, AP has always been rumoured to be gay. However, to this day, especially in a recent interview, he has vehemently and publicly denied being gay. AP is alleged to have a relationship with a young actor and a flight attendant, both of which he has denied, of course. If AP does not want gay rumors to hound him, then he should be more than circumspect in his activities especially when he is abroad. May this be a big reminder to jolt him further: There is no safest place to hide for a Filipino celebrity. Remember that there is always a "kababayan" in every corner of the world. And with today's technology, impossible is nothing!
