Repost: Jay-Z Denies SA Allegations of Teen Girl in 2000

A woman who alleges she was sexually assaulted by Sean “Diddy” Combs has amended her lawsuit to include allegations that she was also assaulted by Jay-Z at the same party.

The lawsuit was initially filed against Combs in October, but on Sunday the woman added Shawn Carter, the rapper and businessman known as Jay-Z, as a defendant in the civil lawsuit.

Carter is the first celebrity to be accused of sexual assault in connection to Combs.

In a statement addressed to CNN, Carter called the allegations “so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!! Whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away, would you not agree?”

Combs was indicted in September on charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and prostitution related charges. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and has denied all wrongdoing in roughly 30 civil lawsuits that have been filed against him.

The woman, who is identified as a Jane Doe, says she was 13 years old at the time she was allegedly assaulted by Combs and Carter at an after party following the Video Music Awards in 2000. The woman alleges she began to feel woozy after consuming a drink at the party and wandered into a nearby bedroom. The woman alleges Carter raped her first, followed by Combs. The woman says she hit Combs and ran out of the party, according to the amended lawsuit.

Carter was identified in the initial lawsuit as Celebrity A.

News of the lawsuit was first reported by NBC.

According to the lawsuit, Doe’s attorneys reached out to Carter to request “a mediation to resolve this matter.”

“Upon present information and belief, Jay-Z responded to said letter by not only filing an utterly frivolous lawsuit, but by also orchestrating a conspiracy of harassment, bullying and intimidation against Plaintiff’s lawyers, their families, employees and former associates in an attempt to silence Plaintiff from naming Jay-Z herein. This effort was meant to scare Plaintiff and to discredit her counsel. That effort failed. Indeed, Plaintiff chose to file this amendment as a result of the egregious conduct perpetuated by Carter,” according to the lawsuit.

In his response sent to CNN on Sunday, which was addressed to Doe’s attorney Tony Buzbee, Carter called the mediation request a “blackmail attempt.” Carter also said this lawyer, “who I have done a bit of research on, seems to have a pattern of these type of theatrics!”

In a statement from Houston-based Buzbee, he wrote, “The pleading speaks for itself. This is a very serious matter that will be litigated in court.”

Carter added in his statement that his “only heartbreak” is for his family: “My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people. I mourn yet another loss of innocence. Children should not have to endure such at their young age.”

CNN has also reached out to Jay-Z’s wife Beyoncé Knowles for comment.

CNN reported in November that an anonymous male celebrity filed a lawsuit against the Texas attorney representing the Doe, alleging he was the victim of an extortion scheme.

The celebrity accused Buzbee and his firm of “shamelessly attempting to extort exorbitant sums from him or else publicly file wildly false horrific allegations against him.”

Attorneys for the unnamed celebrity claimed further that Buzbee had “threatened to unleash entirely fabricated and salacious allegations of sexual assault” that included “multiple instances of rape of a minor, both male and female” if their client “refuses to comply with their demands.”

Buzbee denied the extortion claims against him, in an Instagram post in which he wrote that his firm “won’t allow the powerful and their high-dollar lawyers to intimidate or silence sexual assault survivors,” and in a statement to CNN.

“If you are trying to hide your identity and you claim you did nothing wrong, doesn’t seem very smart to take this approach,” Buzbee told CNN in an email at the time. “We will address it in due course.”

“I have confidence that with full public disclosure all of this will sort itself out,” Buzbee wrote.

On Sunday, Buzbee responded on social media to Carter’s statement, saying that the alleged victim “never demanded a penny from him,” claiming they only sought confidential mediation. Buzbee added, “She is emboldened. I’m very proud of her resolve.”

Movie Review: Block Z

Movie Review by Atty. Ferdinand S. Topacio

BLOCK Z (2020, ABS-CBN Films)

Starring: Julia Barretto, Joshua Garcia, Maris Racal, McCoy De Leon, Ian Veneracion, Myrtle Sarrosa, Yves Flores

Written by: Mixkaela Villalon

Directed by: Mikhail Red

BLOCK ZZZZZ…

Everything with Block Z was mostly done right: gorgeous cast, excellent acting, engaging cinematography, snappy editing, tight pacing, competent direction. To be sure, the writing was spotty, but not that much. So why did all these ingredients result in a sum much lesser than its parts?

This movie’s misfortune is that it dwells on a subject that has been worked to death in cinema: zombies. Just recently, the South Korean made Train To Busan (2016) made waves both here and abroad, and quickly became the gold standard for Asian zombie movie. Then there were several seasons of the acclaimed HBO series The Walking Dead. Not to be forgotten is Brad Pitt’s 2013 World War Z, the title of which Block Z is an unabashed rip-off. In the face of all those, plus dozens of others during the last decade, what novelty could Block Z provide?

The plot is easy to follow. Julia Barretto plays Princess Joy, or PJ, a senior medical student emotionally estranged from her father Mario (Ian Veneracion), a band member, whom she blames for not being present when her mother suffers a fatal stroke. The movie begins with PJ being brought by Mario to medical school. There, we are introduced to the rest of the main cast: Erika (Maris Racal), her best friend; Lucas (Joshua Garcia), a school jock and PJ’s persistent suitor; Myles (McCoy de Leon) who has a secret love for Erika; Gelo (Yves Flores), the well-to-do school council president; Vanessa (Myrtle Sarrosa), Gelo’s socmed-savvy vice-president; and Bebeth (Dimples Romana), the university’s conscientious security guard.

The action then shifts to the university hospital, where the PJ, Lucas, Erika and Myles are residents. An unknown woman (Ina Raymundo) is rushed in with an animal bite, while her small child pleads for help. The four try to stabilize her condition, but she flatlines nonetheless. Brought to the morgue, the corpse springs back to life, biting a male nurse. From then on, the contagion spreads throughout the campus. Locked in by a military-enforced quarantine, the friends – with the help of the feisty Bebeth and Mario (who coincidentally brings a victim he had bumped with his car to the same hospital) – use all their skills to try to survive the night and  make it in time to a rescue set for five o’clock the next morning.

As I have said, the young cast acquit themselves very well. Julia Barretto delivers as usual, and looks achingly pretty when she, later in the film, transforms into a Lara Croft-type zombie exterminator. Maris is a delight to watch, extremely photogenic and with acting abilities beyond her age. Joshua and McCoy are charming as the besotted young men going to great lengths to protect the objects of their affection. Special mention must be made of Myrtle Sarrosa, who made the most of a supporting role playing a student leader who disregards her own safety to help the many. Only Yves, as Gelo, a self-absorbed elitist concerned only with saving his own skin in the face of the impending annihilation of thousands, failed to make a mark in the acting department.

Unfortunately, the movie had nothing new to offer as far as the zombie genre is concerned. All it could do for the audience was to take every trope and attempt to combine them in a new way. The attempt, however, fails in the main, due to the highly predictable script. Plot twists could be seen coming two or three scenes away. Even the placement of the jump scares could be foreseen a few seconds before they finally appear, thus robbing them of their power to scare. The social commentaries that the director shoehorned into the plot line also didn’t help the plot development, succeeding only in muddling what was supposed to be a lean and simple story arc.

There were also noticeable plot holes. For instance, the movie finished without the origin of the viral epidemic having been sufficiently explained. Neither was the sudden disappearance of the military, who had done a horrifically efficient job earlier in the movie of mowing down every person that moved, zombie or not. And the viewer was largely kept wondering by what reason some were immune to the (for lack of a better term) zombie virus. But on the whole, had the screenwriting been imbued with more zing and freshness, these flaws could have been overlooked.

The result is a movie that suffered in comparison to the others in its class: it was not new enough, or suspenseful enough, or gory enough, to distinguish itself, so much so that halfway through, most of those in the audience were turned into zombies: catatonic, bleary-eyed and sleepy. A bad case of Block Zzzzzz….

Bench The Naked Truth Show to Feature Hot Filipino-Swedish Model

Get ready Philippines as Devon Spence takes the country by storm. This handsome and charming six foot, 25 year old who was born to a Filipino father and Swedish mother is coming to Manila for the very first time. He will be part of the big annual Bench fashion extravaganza happening on September 19 at the Mall of Asia arena. His resume reads like any model’s dream from working with the biggest brands—from Z Zegna, Ralph Lauren, Original Penguin, and Abercrombie & Fitch. He has been featured in GQ and L’Uomo Vogue and has worked with legendary photographers like Bruce Weber and Albert Watson. As an actor, he is appearing for the first time in a movie scheduled to be released at the end of the year.

Born and raised in Florida, Spence started out as a model, a career in New York for five years then moved to LA to pursue acting and modelling at the same time. He has retained his “Pinoy touch” not only by indulging in Filipino cuisine, his favourite lumpia, but has made his connection even more meaningful by sponsoring an indigent child in Legazpi in the Bicol.

How long have you been modeling?
I have been modeling for five years since my mom dropped me off in a little studio in Miami and said "Good Luck!"

What was your first job?
First job I can remember was a campaign for Hollister shot photographed by legendary photographer Bruce Weber with about fifty other models. The best part was getting my first real feel of what it's like to work on a professional level. I have yet to meet another photographer who can capture so much in one shot including an inner beauty of person the way Bruce Weber can.

Tell us the ad campaigns you have done and other photographers you have worked with?
I've done quite a few ad campaigns and definitely the most I've ever done this year. The biggest one I believe I have done is the most recent for Z Zegna. Actually this was something I had always wanted to do since I started modeling. I love parkour and gymnastics, but to be doing tricks in a sport suit is unbelievable. Working with Laura Holmes production was a blessing and to have been part of a project with Director Jacob Sutton was an absolute privilege. The pictures are epic and I've only seen clips of what the commercial is to be, but I know your going to love it. I'm happy to have have worked with two very talented martial artists/stunt performers. They train as much as I dance. I also had the pleasure of working with Adam Kirley, the man who jumped from crane to crane in Casino Royal! I enjoyed every moment that we were in Milan. I'm really excited for the release of this campaign this year. It was an experience I'll never forget.

What’s the most important thing in your life at the moment?
At any moment the most important thing to me is not letting someone down. My words and time are very important and I value them as much as I value another's. I know that you can't please everyone, but I can still try. You can't be perfect, but I think I can get very close. But more importantly my family is the most important thing to me. They raised me to uphold a certain level of respect and always told me to be myself and to always be humble. They have supported me at every turn and the best way I can give back to them right now is to be consistent with who I am.

How would you describe yourself?
I would describe myself as extremely ambitious. Everyday I strive to be doing something towards my career goal, to dance, to act, to get fit, to find healthier sources of food and to educate myself in anything.

What’s your life in LA like? What do you do for sports/fitness?
I've lived in LA for over a year now and I love it. The weather is always bright and sunny with a breeze and there are many beaches to hang out at. We have the Tempest Freerun academy there where I like to spend part of my time training. I usually do my ab workouts on the rooftop where I'm closest to the sky. I love Bikram yoga and I'm a huge fan of Soul Cycle.

Describe your family to us? How ‘Pinoy’ are you?
I am the oldest of my siblings. My brother is an artist and a US marine just like my dad. My dad is pretty tech savvy and is one of my best friends. He and I love gadgets. My oldest sister is a go getter digging her hands into anything and everything she can to make money and takes care of two cute huskies. My youngest sister is a good mother and always has a smile on. My mother is very organized and taught me what it means to respect women. My grandmother from my dad's side is the closest member I know that speaks Tagalog in our family and she is unstoppable, always sewing, cooking, or planning a party and taking care of my grandpa who always makes me laugh.

What’s your favorite Filipino food?
There are so many foods I love and used to love. Its much more difficult to answer now that I am a vegetarian, but my favorite Filipino foods have always been lumpia and rice cakes (bibingka). My grandma adds a special licorice flavoring.

It will be your first time coming to Manila, how do you feel? What are you looking forward to?
I've refrained from looking at any pictures that may build up an expectation. I want it to be like a good movie without having seen the trailer. I'm super excited to visit Manila. It's going to be both a surprise and a wonderful experience. To step foot on Philippine soil I imagine for me will be equivalent to walking on the red carpet, a dream come true!

You will be part of the big Bench show, your thoughts?
I'm ecstatic to have even been considered for it. To me this is the biggest show in the Philippines and I just hope I don't disappoint anyone. Everyone asks me if I'll ever be in the Bench show and I can now happily say “yes!”

What would you like to tell your fellow Filipinos?
You should always do what makes you happy and if you don't know what that is then do something, anything. Even something you think just might make you happy. It is the path you travel that carries all the joy and not the destination itself. No one knows where they will be or how they will get there, but as long as you are moving forward reaching for some goal you will be opening doors you never knew existed and if you can stop to breathe every so often and enjoy the present then I feel you've already made it. Mabuhay!

Devon Spence is represented by Christian Alexander of Front Management. In the Philippines please asdinq@yahoo.com for bookings and inquiries.

Five Female Superstars Who are Dominating Today’s Music Scene

March may have ended, but we’re not done celebrating Women’s History Month just yet! We’re putting the focus on some of our favorite superstars – multifaceted women who are making waves in and out of the music industry.

These women continue to elevate their respective genres and empower others to express themselves, all while exploring different aspects of their artistry. Read on to discover if your favorite artist made the cut, and what songs of theirs you can’t miss!

Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa is an artist that needs no introduction. This pop superstar started her career by posting song covers on YouTube, but what really propelled her into the spotlight was her hit song “New Rules.” From then on, it was just success after success for Dua, and the three-time Grammy Award winner is now currently on the US leg of her Future Nostalgia tour.

To share more about her experiences and create stronger connections with her fans, Dua also recently launched Service95. This weekly newsletter serves up a curation of recommendations, stories, and conversations that readers won’t see or read anywhere else. Not long after, she launched her podcast called Dua Lipa: At Your Service, where she and several podcast guests discuss relevant topics such as the importance of responsible storytelling and women supporting women.

Songs you can’t miss: We’re pretty sure you’ve listened to “Levitating” a handful of times (and we can’t blame you), but another fun and upbeat song to stream is Dua’s latest release – “Sweetest Pie” with Megan Thee Stallion.

Bella Poarch

Anyone who’s on TikTok is bound to know Bella Poarch. This pure Filipina rose to internet stardom after a video of her lip-syncing became viral in August 2020, getting more than 50 million likes. What eventually followed was her rise to becoming the #1 most followed Asian on TikTok worldwide! Soon, all eyes were on the 25-year-old star, and she proved not long after that her talents went beyond making TikTok videos.

In 2021, Bella released her first single called “Build a Bitch.” It became a global success, with its music video getting nearly 400 million views. This is no surprise, as the song is catchy, fresh, and calls out the unrealistic standards that women are told they must live up to. It’s clear that Bella uses her music not only to entertain, but also to go against problematic ideologies in today’s society.

Songs you can’t miss: “Build a Bitch” is a must-listen, but if you want the perfect blend of haunting and upbeat, check out her song with Sub Urban titled “Inferno.”

Saweetie

One female rap star who’s made a name for herself in recent years is Saweetie. The Grammy-nominated artist started writing rap music in her early teens, and has pursued her passion for it since then. From uploading a now-viral freestyle video on Instagram to creating countless hit songs like “ICY GRL,” “High Maintenance,” and “My Type,” Saweetie is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with.

Outside of music, she released an ICY jewelry line and collaborated with UK-based fashion retailer PrettyLittleThings for her very own collection. Hard work and independence have obviously always been in Saweetie’s blood, something that her Filipino-American family taught her at an early age. She’s proof that working for what you want pays off, and we are here for it!

Songs you can’t miss: If you’re looking for a song to hype you up and get you dancing, then “Best Friend” featuring Doja Cat is the go-to. Looking for something more sultry and sensual? Then check out Saweetie’s new breezy single called “Closer” featuring H.E.R.

GAYLE

Unfiltered, honest, and genuine – these are some words that describe chart-topping pop singer GAYLE. Much like Bella Poarch, this Gen-Z artist blew up on TikTok after sharing her hit song “abcdefu” on the platform. Since then, she’s been receiving much deserved attention and acclaim, whether it’s being part of Billboard’s 21 under 21: The Ones To Watch or being a guest performer on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

GAYLE recently released her debut EP “a study of the human experience volume one,” which touches on her insecurities, desires, and raw emotions. Her relatable and nuanced songs embrace vulnerability, while also empowering others to be unapologetic about their feelings.

Songs you can’t miss: If you loved “abcdefu,” then you’ll love the equally catchy “luv starved.”

Avril Lavigne

Rounding up this list is none other than pop-punk princess Avril Lavigne. The multi-platinum singer recently released her highly anticipated album “Love Sux,” sending fans into a frenzy. The album was well received, with a number of critics praising Avril for sticking to her nostalgic pop-punk sound while making sure it’s current and in the now.

Avril is set to go on her Bite Me 2022 Canada Tour this coming May, and will be part of several concerts and music festivals for the rest of the year. As a trailblazer in her genre and in the industry in general, she continues to inspire fellow artists to stay authentic to their true selves as they work on their craft.

Songs you can’t miss: If you want to listen to songs that are reminiscent of Avril’s past hits, then give “Bite Me” and “Love It When You Hate Me” a try.

We’ve compiled all the songs you can’t miss from these artists onto one playlist! Listen to them here.

This 2022, IAM Worldwide is focused on aggressively expanding their company operations and market influence. And in line with this, the company says it is ready for bigger things and is delighted to welcome its newest and first-ever global ambassador – South Korean model and actress Jung Ho-Yeon.
Ho-Yeon is best known for playing the role of North Korean defector Kang Sae-Byeok (067) in Netflix’s Squid Game. The series became Netflix’s most watched show ever within a week of its launch on the streamer, with 142 million member households globally watching the show. Since then, Ho-Yeon’s fame has skyrocketed on a global scale with now having 23.7 million followers on Instagram and counting. Before her acting debut, she gained popularity as a top runway model starting at the age of 16 and has starred in Korea’s Next Top Model in 2013.

For IAM Worldwide President/Founder Allen Marvin Yu Eder, having Jung Ho-Yeon on board is perfect for the company’s goal to reach potential millennial and Gen Z consumers. “Ms. Jung Ho-Yeon is definitely the exceptional choice as the new face of the company and our products. She’s now a powerhouse celebrity known globally and really connects well with the youth. She’s a glamorous ace for IAM Worldwide”, he explained.

Moreover, Vice President/Founder Aika Lorraine Uy believes that lots of Filipinos right now are really into the Hallyu wave with the Korean entertainment so having a very prominent star like Ho-Yeon is a real honor as her chic personality and glamorous aura greatly compliments the company’s goal to inspire the youth and feel connected with IAM Worldwide’s products more than ever. She said, “We consider being associated with the very lovable Jung Ho-Yeon as a success already. We strongly feel that she will be able to scale up the company’s presence and customer base by a thousandfold not just here in the Philippines, but also in other countries.”

Ho-Yeon has won millions of hearts because of her talent, beauty and charm. She recently won the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series at the 28th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards last month and the Best Actress in an Action Series at the 27th Critics Choice Awards held last March 13. Moreover, she recently accepted the global ambassador role for luxury brands Louis Vuitton, Chanel Beauty, and sports wear Adidas.

Meanwhile, General Manager/Co-Founder Joanna Mañego considers this a “proud moment” for the company since Ho-Yeon deeply understands her role as an ambassador and fully trusts the benefits of IAM Worldwide’s products. “We are so proud that we have Ms. Jung Ho-Yeon on our side as our company goes to its pivotal moment of expansion. With her campaign, we believe that we will be able to encourage more people to be and stay healthy with IAM Worldwide’s products,” the GM stated.

Get ready as the young global fashion icon and superstar proudly endorses the AMAZING Pure Organic Barley that is a grass leaf, 100% organically grown from Australia in the young green stage which is purported to be the most prolific, balanced supply of nutrients of any single source. Another product is the AMAZING Immunergy with Vitamin C + Zinc + Vitamin D + Moringa Oleifera, an immunity and energy boosting powerhouse. And the AMAZING Acai Berry Extract with Collagen and Bacopa Monnieri, with 8 essential ingredients to protect the body from damaging effects of free radicals while enhancing one’s memory and promoting skin elasticity.

Truly, IAM Worldwide is grateful because it’s Ho-Yeon’s very first time to endorse a company and brand that’s proudly Filipino. And if you ask her, she can’t wait to bring happiness to her growing hardcore fans and supporters here in the country. She hopes to visit the Philippines soon and is very thankful to all the love she’s getting on social media coming from Filipinos.

“Sending my biggest hugs to you. I am always proud that I have such caring and loving fans from the Philippines! Take care and stay healthy everyone. Fighting!”, says Jung Ho-Yeon.

PMPC Reveals Special Award Winners and Star Awards for TV Nominees

Image courtesy of Facebook: Philippine Movie Press Club - PMPC

PMPC stages the 35th Star Awards for TV on January 28 at Winford Manila Hotel
In recent years, especially at the height of the pandemic, people depend on television for entertainment, news, education, culture, weather, sports — and what have you. Indeed, the boob tube is a powerful tool and is considered the main source of information for people, because it enables us to receive the latest news from all over the world.

Further, we also get entertained by it and get rid of boredom. Today, more than ever, various TV programs pose a significant influence on modern culture and become tools for sharing information, ideas, personal messages, and other content.

This is why the Philippine Movie Press Club, Inc. (PMPC), over the years, has become a staunch supporter of the men and women behind these TV programs by honoring them for the job well done.
This year, the 35th Star Awards for Television is set to happen on January 28, 2023 (Sat.), 6:00 pm, at Winford Manila Resort and Casino (Sta Cruz, Manila).

TV host-turned-politician Senator Raffy Tulfo and former actress Connie Angeles will lead this year’s honorees as recipients of the Excellence in Broadcasting Lifetime Achievement Award and the Ading Fernando Lifetime Achievement Award, respectively.

The veteran broadcast journalist, commentator and multi-media personality started out in 1993. His public service programs on radio, television, and YouTube were aired until his election as senator of the Philippines in the 2022 national election.

Meanwhile, Ms. Angeles started out as a child actress and metamorphosed into a public service host and eventually a public servant in the 1990s. Currently, she is the Senior Assistant Vice President and Executive Director for Health for SM Foundation, Inc.

Adding glitter to the night would be the presence of showbiz’s hottest tandems -- Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano and Kelvin Miranda and Mikee Quintos – who shall receive the German Moreno Power Tandem of the Year.

The 35th Star Awards edition is led by the newly elected PMPC President Fernan de Guzman and his team. On hand to support the PMPC for this exciting awards night is JAMSAP Entertainment Corporation led by Jojo Flores and Maricar Moina. Frank Lloyd Mamaril directs the show.

Repost: Chester Bennington: Linkin Park Vocalist 'Took His Own Life'

Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington has died aged 41, LA County Coroner says.

The coroner said Bennington apparently hanged himself. His body was found at a private home in the county at 09:00 local time (17:00 GMT) on Thursday.

Bennington was said to be close to Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell, who took his own life in May.

Formed in 1996, Linkin Park have sold more than 70 million albums worldwide and won two Grammy Awards.

The band had a string of hits including Faint, In The End and Crawling, and collaborated with the rapper Jay-Z.

Band member Mike Shinoda confirmed the news of Bennington's death

The album Meteora topped the Billboard 200 chart in 2003 and is regarded as one of the biggest indie rock records of all time.

The band had been due to begin a tour next week.

For a generation growing up in the early 2000s, it would have been hard not to find someone who didn't own a copy of the band's debut album Hybrid Theory.

It's sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and remains one of the biggest selling albums released since the start of the millennium.

Linkin Park's successful trick was to fuse elements of metal and rock with rap and hip-hop to shape the nu-metal genre on songs such as Crawling, In The End and Numb.

Arguably their biggest asset was Chester's powerhouse voice. He had a huge, raspy vocal which suited their stadium-filling, singalong anthems.

Whilst his vocal persona could be described as angry and harsh, in person he was warm, articulate and funny.

The band's most recent album, One More Light, saw a different direction as they worked with prolific pop songwriters Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter - and collaborated with UK grime artist Stormzy.

He leaves a wife, and six children from two marriages.

The singer is said to have struggled for years with alcohol and drug abuse, and has talked in the past about contemplating suicide as a result of being a victim of abuse as a child.

Bennington wrote an open letter to Chris Cornell on the latter's death, saying: "You have inspired me in ways you could never have known... I can't imagine a world without you in it."

Cornell would have celebrated his 53rd birthday on Thursday. He hanged himself after a concert in Detroit on 17 May.

Band member Mike Shinoda confirmed the news of Bennington's death on Twitter: "Shocked and heartbroken, but it's true. An official statement will come out as soon as we have one."

Tributes to Bennington flooded in soon after news of his death.

The band Imagine Dragons tweeted: "no words, so heartbroken. RIP Chester Bennington."

Grime artist Stormzy, who collaborated with Linkin Park earlier this year, tweeted: "Bruv I can't lie I'm so upset serious."

Repost: Joshua Garcia Hurt Over Controversy Surrounding Julia Barretto

Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto are no longer a couple, but that hasn’t stopped the actor from being supportive of his former girlfriend amid a controversy romantically linking her with their fellow Star Magic artist, Gerald Anderson.

“JoshLia,” as they’re fondly called by their legion of fans, announced their change of status to being “best friends” in late June, following weeks of rumors that they have broken up.

Barretto’s ties with Anderson, her leading man in the romance film “Between Maybes,” became the subject of speculation in mid-July when the actor’s girlfriend of three years, Bea Alonzo, hinted of infidelity in her relationship with an Instagram post about having had “enough.”

Alonzo’s visible Instagram activities, including liking posts alleging an affair between Barretto and Anderson, led to the onscreen partners becoming the target of criticisms and allegations of cheating.

Alonzo has since revealed that Anderson did not accord her a formal breakup and “just started not talking to me.”

While Barretto’s mother Marjorie and sister Dani have already denied that she was a factor in the separation, the actress has notably remained tight-lipped despite persistent accusations.

Garcia, who just recently wrapped filming the zombie flick “Block Z” with Barretto, said he is “hurt” for his ex-girlfriend amid the intrigues tagging her as a third party.

“Siyempre, naging karelasyon ko rin si Julia. Nasasaktan ako for her, sa nangyayari, pero I think makakabangon naman siya,” Garcia told ABS-CBN News’ MJ Felipe on Thursday, just before the actor’s departure for the US for an “ASAP” show in San Jose, California.

Asked whether he believes the accusations, Garcia said: “Hindi ko masasagot ‘yan, e. Siguro, lahat ng mga tao may kani-kaniyang opinyon about sa nangyaring isyu.”

Barretto arrived shortly after Garcia at Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Thursday afternoon. Inside, they were photographed together, as seen in snaps released by “ASAP” on its official social media channels.

The two also appeared to be constant companions as they arrived in the US on Friday (Manila time), with photos showing them seated together on a shuttle, among others.

Garcia had earlier sent Barretto words of encouragement via text message, as seen in a screenshot posted by the actress on July 24.

“Malalampasan mo ‘yan. I know you, you’re the strongest girl na nakilala ko,” he told Barretto at the time.

The Genius of Maja Salvador’s New Ad

“KERATIN PLUS?!?” If you saw the hilarious digital commercial making its rounds on the internet, I’m certain you heard Maja Salvador’s voice reading that line. Making an “ad you can hear,” Keratin Plus, a daily hair treatment product, recently launched a digital commercial with their newest endorser, celebrity actress and soon-to-be-mom, Maja Salvador.

The 15-second video opens with Maja’s gorgeous profile saying, “I feel beautiful because I treat my hair with keratin… KERATIN???” as she finger combs through her long, luscious hair. Dubbed the “Queen of Repeating Words”, the creatives behind this ad perfectly matched Maja’s natural quirk to the simple yet brilliant script.

But that’s not all there is to it. The “repeating words syndrome” is a distinctly Pinoy take on hifalutin words or sudden English speak. It’s a verbal mannerism that is widespread among Millennials and Gen Z, to soften the seriousness of a conversation, or to make fun of one’s self. It’s like an inside joke among fellow Pinoys and is translated as the “caps lock patanong culture” among younger netizens. Some go as far as gatekeeping the meme when others can’t seem to understand its context, but that’s what makes it funnier. The “dogshow humor” of the ad instantly caught its audience, trending among Facebook Community Groups and social media platforms. Some even claim it’s the official meme of 2024.

That’s easy, given the convenience of sharing online. The true success of the ad, however, is measured by how some people went out of their way to hunt for the product themselves. “The Living Meme,” as some netizens call it, has an effect on consumers, making them flock to their nearby groceries and sari sari stores to check out the Keratin Plus hair treatments and shampoos.

Check out these TikTokers proving that the ad is not just funny but highly effective, too:

Under the username @gaiapoly with over 500k followers and 22.1M likes, the female TikToker is seen walking inside a local grocery with her young nephew, Martin, who mimicked the commercial by repeating some of her words as she talks to the camera, vlogging their trip. “Kaloka ‘yung effect ni Ms. Maja Salvador sa pamangkin ko. Mapapa-Keratin Plus ka na lang talaga, bhie,” she said on her caption. They even inserted parts of the commercial on the TikTok video to show how they’re copying Maja’s lines.

Another result of the ad is how it has proven to have brand recall, as TikToker, Martin Leonard Chua who has 165k followers and over 5.5M likes, recorded his own “Keratin Plus moment” upon seeing the product while he did his personal grocery errands. “I’m seeing a live Twitter meme right now,” he shared, as he held up a bottle of Keratin Plus shampoo. “Keratin???,” he jokingly said, in the same manner Maja did in the commercial. “Ang funny ni Maja Salvador! [...] I’m so happy na nakita ko siya in person (pertaining to the product).”

As more people discover the brand through the entertaining advertisement, many share their positive reviews on these videos’ comments section.

There is power in advertising, yes—the wittier, the better. But what makes it exponentially powerful that captures loyal consumers is the truth about their claims, and this is something that users can testify about Keratin Plus, again and again.
