A Lot of Nonstop Talking

The job of a makeup artist is crucial whenever a celebrity has to make a public appearance. Without right makeup, a celebrity can be highly criticized for looking so ordinary or so plain. Inappropriate makeup could result in making the celebrity look drab. Consequently, the celebrity could become the target of negative comments from the public simply because the makeup artist did not do a good job.

Whenever a makeup artist is assigned to a famous celebrity, the former makes sure he/she does impressive work, as a mistake could be costly that could lead to not being called again for makeup duties. Coming up with acceptable work comes with actual time spent to make sure the makeup brings out the beauty of the celebrity. The work further requires concentration and minimal distractions.

One time, a makeup artist was so distracted by the attitude of Talkative Actor (TA). The makeup artist was applying makeup on the Screen Partner (SP) of TA. While SP possesses appeal and a certain level of beauty, makeup is very essential to her look. Makeup creates the illusion that SP has the perfect nose, eyes, and facial skin tone. TA was in the same room and kept edging the makeup artist to hurry, as he and SP still had to go to an event.

As the makeup artist continued with beautifying SP, TA kept yapping that the makeup artist was doing such a slow job. The attitude of TA is not at all surprising, as he has shown tactlessness several times, which have been caught on social media. TA did not at all consider that he was tactless and that his words actually added more distractions. In short, his attitude was not helpful and his presence added to the pressure on the makeup.

Consequently, the makeup artist started to feel resentment as TA continued to talk. Meanwhile, SP remained cool and did not pacify TA nor did she assure the makeup artist that all would be well. The irony is that TA and SP are going to an event, and as a major celebrity couple, TA and SP have to look their best. Thus, makeup is essential to make SP look beautiful.

‘A certain amount of impatience may be useful to stimulate and motivate us to action. However, I believe that a lack of patience is a major cause of the difficulties and unhappiness in the world today.’ - Joseph B. Wirthlin

Raymart Santiago Reveals 'Truth' Behind Claudine Barretto's Bruises

Raymart Santiago will not have Claudine Barretto insinuating that he was the cause of bruises on her face, as seen in several photos of the "battered" actress released by her lawyer over the weekend.

In an e-mail to ABS-CBNnews.com on Tuesday, Santiago's legal counsel, Atty. Ruth Castelo, shared five photos of Barretto wearing a headgear with bandages on her cheeks. The photos, courtesy of Santiago, were taken during Holy Week of 2010, according to Castelo.

An accompanying statement read: "Here is a truthful version of the recent Twitter post of a make-up tutorial to conceal bruises, perhaps even wounds and scars, with the allusion of the subject having been battered. The wounds and scars are definitely real, but how they were sustained is a different story altogether."

Four of the photos show Barretto with Santiago at what appears to be a swimming pool area of a private residence. The former couple, whose separation was first reported in July 2013, are also seen with a number of companions, including Santiago's brother, singer-host Randy Santiago.

The captions of the photos read, unedited: "Battered wife?!? Seriously...?!? …Amidst these happy faces…?!?! ...Who would believe such a lie?? …About one happy battered wife…???"

Post-surgery?

The last photo, a close-up of Barretto's facial bruises covered with bandages, was captioned: "Before applying make-up, first make sure that the wounds from the post-surgical procedure have healed so the bandage can be safely removed."

This was in reference to a series of photos posted on Twitter last Sunday by Barretto's legal counsel, Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, showing the actress apparently with bruises on her face, before and after applying makeup.

According to Castelo, Topacio's last photo of a "finished product" was taken before Barretto's live guesting on the entertainment talk show "Showbiz Central" in April 2010.

Topacio's tweets were in response to a post on a gossip blog where photos of Barretto early this year were compared to a more recent one where she bared more scars allegedly from being a battered wife.

In a series of posts, Topacio said: "We are not making this up. The scars have been there all along. In conclusion, no woman would deliberately make herself ugly. Who inflicted them? I leave it to you guys. To all those who say maliciously that the wounds are a fabrication, may you suffer what Claudine has suffered."

Battered wife?

Last week, Barretto had a photo shoot which showed several wounds on her thighs, among them burns supposedly from cigarette butts. Calling herself a "battered wife," the actress said the pictorial was to help others in a similar situation to speak up.

Dr. Acel Chicano, Barretto's attending wound care specialist, told reporters that the marks on the actress' thighs are hyperpigmented, meaning the wounds were not inflicted recently.

"Matagal nang nangyari iyon. Hindi iyon bago pa lang," she said.

Although Barretto did not identify who inflicted the wounds, she said the details are included in a complaint she had filed in connection with the Anti-Violence against Women and Their Children Act of 2004.

Barretto earlier accused Santiago of "physical, sexual, psychological and economic" abuse, supposedly dating back to 2002. These are detailed in her complaint against the actor for his alleged violation of the said law.

Santiago also alleged that he was a victim of domestic violence. In his complaint, the actor accused his wife of being mentally ill and having a history of drug abuse, claims backed by the actress' estranged siblings Gretchen, Marjorie, and JJ.

Court battle anew

Both Barretto and Santiago have repeatedly mentioned the welfare of their children -- 7-year-old Santino and 10-year-old Sabina -- in explaining why they took the spat to court, and why they are seeking sole custody of the kids.

In June, the former couple appeared to have patched things up when Barretto posted a photo of her with Santiago and their kids. This, after they reached an agreement concerning their children through a judicial dispute resolution.

Last July 14, however, Barretto exclusively told ABS-CBN News that she was planning to pull out from the agreement.

Barretto mentioned three reasons why she arrived at the decision, and why she is planning to sue her husband for "economical abuse" -- Castelo's recent statements about the ongoing legal battle, Santiago's supposed absence from their children's affairs, and his alleged unwillingness to fulfill his financial obligations.

Be Kind to Your Makeup Artists

Scholarly Actress (SA) is a favorite among makeup artists and stylists. Yes, SA is such a favorite as her name tops their hate list. These people unanimously do not want to work with SA, if they had a choice.

Before any performer goes on stage or in front of the camera, he/she has to be made-up. A bad make-up can ruin the beauty of a performer, whereas a good one can enhance any beauty-challenged star. In fact, several actors and actresses have been mistaken of having a nose job because their makeup artists have successfully created the illusion of a finely chiseled nose.

When SA sits down on the chair, she becomes too particular at how the makeup artist will work on her. Before the makeup artist can finish the work, expect SA to complain. Sometimes the ranting starts even before the makeup artist can begin work. Worse, SA can be so irritating when her hair is handled. She immediately says she’s getting hurt. It’s no wonder that her hair has the same style, straight and flat, in most of her shows.

Anyone who wants to look good in showbiz must deal with the minor irritations that makeup could possibly bring as well as the slight pain that tugging and styling of the hair might cause. As most performers acknowledge, “tiis-ganda” has to be practiced when one faces the public. SA, though she might not be as popular as the other actresses in her network, already has carved a name for herself, and thus, is easily recognizable. Hence, she can be easily criticized if she comes out looking ordinary.

Perhaps, SA can learn a thing or two about bigger stars who have developed rapport with certain makeup artists and stylists. We don’t hear about these bigger stars being the subject of complaints of the staff. Then, of course, if she’s as skillful as her complaining, then SA can do her own makeup, and spare the ordinary folk from her rantings. Though SA belongs to the rare set of showbiz personalities who publicly acknowledge they are prioritizing education, SA is proof that education does not guarantee character.

Kris Aquino Breaks Her Silence

What SILENCE Taught Me

I purposely stayed away from social media (and yes, Kris Tv went on Best Of for 8 episodes) because there were professional issues we needed to resolve, and Thank You, Lord- natuto na ko that by being outspoken and sharing details with all of you, mas hahaba ang proseso at mas malabong maayos sa mahinahon at mature na paraan.

That doesn’t mean that you are unimportant to me.  The truth is I would never have become me had you not given me consistent support.  BUT life has taught me that I should share with you my work, the process that goes hand in hand with my work, the “paying it forward” aspect of sharing my blessings, and certain snippets of our family life that will hopefully inspire you. The rest of my life, I owe to my siblings and sons to keep among us.  Alam nyo na pinaka sensitive ako when it comes to my family, somehow pag silang tinira, no matter how much I want to ignore the bashers and haters, the part of me that needs to stand up and defend my loved ones is unleashed, and bahala na si Batman, lalaban ako.

This time was different, I knew that by containing the situation- there was a very big chance that I would have a much stronger opportunity of fixing everything where everybody would feel blessed, and there won’t be anything that I would need to later on clean up.  My cue came from one of Boy Abunda’s favorite sayings, “Pag emosyonal at hindi muna magsasalita, mas kaunti ang kakailanging walisin at bawiin kapag bumalik na sa normal ang sitwasyon.”

Guess what, the girl who relished living 30 years of her life in the public eye actually felt peaceful keeping to herself.  I mostly stayed home, except for going to Church to pray in total surrender and to give my thanksgiving.  I was sick for 3 days with fever and then I had a bout of hypertension (158/105) from all my stress.  This compelled me to stay in bed, eat very healthy, decompress, and sleep.

Staying away from my phone gave me time to read (James Patterson’s NYPD Red 4, Marie Kondo’s The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up and her follow up book, Spark Joy), I got hooked on FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano and Pangako Sa ‘Yo (OTWOLISTAS please don’t get mad at me, but I followed the bedtime of Kuya Josh and Bimb so the latest lights out for us was 9:30 PM), and I started watching season 1 of Telenovela and Seasons 1 and 2 of Younger on iTunes.  I also became obsessed with the presidential primaries in the United States, glued to the CNN coverage of Iowa and now New Hampshire anchored by Anderson Cooper, and I became an admirer of the work of Megyn Kelly on Fox News.

I read all sections of the New York Times, as well as Time, Newsweek, The Week, The Economist, Bloomberg Businessweek, and Forbes.  I devoured the blogs about food, fashion, life hacks, makeup, home decor, and travel on Bloglovin’.  And I became an avid fan of Huff Post (actually creating a Pinoy version of this is my new life goal).

Keeping to myself gave me time to listen to a lot of inspirational music, LAUDS by Arnel Aquino SJ, Hillsong United, Selah, Point of Grace, and Keith & Kristyn Getty are now part of my playlists.  Listening to songs of worship, or sometimes just the instrumental version of songs of praise gave my heart a lot of serenity and I felt the loving embrace of my Creator.

Looking back, there were many moments in my life that would probably have taken a different direction had I done what I did now- kept things to myself…

A relationship is hard enough to maintain, there are enough conflicts between the partners and those closest to them, how much more difficult it is to sustain the love and the desire to hold on when everybody who can see my IG feed will feel free to comment, because I wasn’t cautious enough and laid bare my heart? YES, kasalanan ko yun…

Co-parenting is exceptionally difficult, but in this case I believe Bimb’s father and I are equally to blame because we have been influenced by the opinion of our followers, and we have used social media to be our mediator. We recently had a misunderstanding, but neither of us shared the details, and we managed to reach a certain level of pacification that we both realize is for Bimb’s benefit.  Fingers crossed that we can maintain this level of maturity.

I also learned that an attempt at humor won’t work when you have an audience of millions.  Admit it, we have inside jokes with our family, coworkers, and close friends, and shared memories will make it easier to giggle about certain life events because of what we’ve personally witnessed up close.  But joking with people who don’t know you intimately can backfire and make you appear selfish and spoiled.

Viewers see the finished product, but you aren’t privy to the negotiations that go on behind the scenes for our contracts, most especially the minutest details in those agreements and the back and forth that is needed for all parties to feel they are benefiting from the union.  It is a job, it is a profession, it is a business- but it is unique in that all of you our viewers are stakeholders.

Allow me this moment to apologize to you, the Kris Tv regular viewers, the TFC subscribers, the consumers who patronize my endorsements, and my IG followers for taking a leave with no explanation… Sana maintindihan ninyo na kung nagpaliwanag ako, nabigyan ko na naman ng bala yung haters na batuhin ako dahil sa tingin nila papansin, pa-awa, o pa-importante ako.

I am back, but I am just a bit different, slightly altered, and hopefully improved.  At my core I will always be the Kris Aquino you’ve gotten to know over 30 years; when I think of the length of time we’ve engaged in a relationship, I am shocked that more than half of the Philippine population wasn’t even around when you started getting to know me.  It does make me confront my mortality, but it also makes me feel exceptionally grateful that you gifted me with longevity and relevance.

I was always of the belief that everything was all or nothing, it was either black or white, and there should be no grey areas… Now I realize it is within my capability to filter, and to control myself with what I choose to reveal. A lot of what made you love me and hate me has really come from what I shared with you.  I was given a healthy dose of reality, my unique talent has been my ability to converse, to articulate thoughts and feelings, and to engage my audience.  I know I am interesting because I wasn’t afraid to open up (okay at times overshare)- I have had such an eventful life that was compelling to take part in vicariously, analyze, discuss, laugh at or cry about, and I know how to tell a story- but those same qualities have also been part of the many times I have fallen and needed my family and my supporters to defend me and lift me up.

Yes, I will continue to have missteps, but I am praying that they will be fewer and will occur as rarely as possible.  On February 14, I shall turn 45 years old.  You have known me, watched me, listened to me, and judged me for 30 years, that is exactly 2/3 of my entire life.  Yes, I wanted to be an actress, a host, an endorser- a celebrity.  And I felt that opening up your life, getting the million peso contracts meant that you are surrendering your right to a private life.  Yet the past few weeks educated me that the ability to have a private life comes from the calibrated mix of keeping quiet, lying low, not calling attention to myself, and trusting very few people who have proven time and again that they will keep my confidences because they unequivocally care for me.

The challenge now is to stay fascinating while keeping a little of myself for me… I used to not believe the sayings “Magtira ka para sa sarili mo” as well as “Don’t give too much, don’t love too much, don’t trust too much, don’t hope too much- because the too much can hurt you so much”.  Now, I see the wisdom of those words.

Taping from Batangas to Mindoro showed me that I owe you my 100% when it comes to the episodes we air (wag lang buwis buhay ang segments because Kuya Josh and Bimb need me healthy and alive) because you gave me the precious gift of your time, and our advertisers and TFC subscribers gave good money for us to produce an excellent product. The time I took for myself illuminated in me that peace is priceless.  And that it is possible.

Thank you for taking time to read this, for those who are experiencing life’s crossroads, I hope that what you read will give you insight and strength.  For those of you who wanted to hear from me (in this case read my thoughts) THANK YOU, just thank you for all we have shared and experienced, for the encouragement you give me for today, and the motivation you give me to keep striving for tomorrow.

Just Disregard Her Brashness

Production people are the first witnesses to the kindness, rudeness, and idiosyncrasies of celebrities. Although sometimes prod people are treated as robots, they do the best to make sure the celebrities look excellent in front of the camera. Hence, expectations are high for the work people behind the scenes do. For instance, bad script and bad direction could spell doom for a teleseryes. With high-tech television that allows viewers to see clearly until each pore on the face, makeup artists and wardrobe personnel have to get their act together to make sure that celebrities look good on screen.

One time, a group of production people were having an informal gathering and they smiled at each other as they realized they were talking about the Same Actress (SA) when they were sharing their experiences. While SA seems to project every ounce of professionalism on cam and during her ambush interviews, she can be the headache of the production team.

When SA was doing several projects with a Big Network (BN), the makeup team assigned to her had their own share of encounters. As the makeup team still has several artists to fix, they wanted everyone to be prepared a number of minutes ahead of the time the assistant director calls them for taping. Being senior, SA would be preferred to be done first by the team. Unfortunately, SA would not stand from where she was resting and ignore the calls of the team. Then, when the time for the actual taping would start, SA would then ask the makeup team to hurry up with their makeup. What the team found irritating is that all the time, SA would just have her fingers slide up and down on her tablet.

In another anecdote, someone saw that SA was bawling in one corner of the set. The reason as to why SA was crying was a puzzle. The production personnel was too afraid to ask SA what was wrong, as SA has a tendency to snub others, if not reprimand him/her.

Despite the odd attitude exhibited by SA, she is among the consistent actresses in local television and movies. Her many years in the industry as well as her challenging personal life have honed her talents and enabled her to gain recognition.

“It is our failure to become our perceived ideal that ultimately defines us and makes us unique. It's not easy, but if you accept your misfortune and handle it right your perceived failure can become a catalyst for profound re-invention.” ― Conan O'Brien

Think Creatively for Pleasure

The moment when Multitalented Celebrity (MC) met Skilled Actor (SA) at the set of the film they were making, she felt a tug in her heart. SA was tall, handsome, and talented. Regardless of the language difference, MC did her best to communicate with SA. The days they spent filming in a far-away location made them closer and when MC returned home, she was teased that she might have found love. Well, the teasing was on the right track because SA felt comfortable with MC, and thus, he showed her kindness and other qualities that could develop love.

After sometime, the public noticed the different sparkle in the eyes of MC and assumed the celebrity was indeed in love. When SA came over for vacation, MC made sure he felt the hospitality accorded to visitors. Moreover, given that SA is an actor, he was easily noticed by production teams. Taking advantage of the opportunity to work, SA made use of his time here. The time SA spent with MC, the deeper that their love developed.

When MC and SA admitted they were official, people were happy for them and wished the couple well. While others think that MC and SA are just a normal couple enjoying a second chance at love, others know of the secrets to their successful relationship.

Unlike the typical male, SA was not shy of his expectations when it comes to the confines of their bedroom. Lovemaking was not ordinary, every encounter had to be special. SA only has one request, and that is for MC to be in costume when they are making love. The characters MC have to play have no boundaries. MC could pretend to be a superhero, anime character, Barbie, etc. Other than wearing a costume, MC should also be in full make up to make the production value authentic. The various character portrayals excite SA, and thus, MC was assured of a high level of performance during their moments of intimacy.

While this add-on to their relationship is strengthening their bond, MC is sometimes stumped at thinking of which character to play next. Moreover, she has to spend money for her costumes. In addition, she has to hire a makeup expert to make her look as close to the character she wants to play. Whenever MC calls the expert and asks for full service, the expert knows that MC is up for another exciting night. Indeed, with the effort MC is exerting, she and SA are in for keeps.

Repost: How Ian King Became the Queen of Joey Mead

SUPREMO By Tim Yap

It was exactly 10 years ago when I introduced Ian King to Joey Mead. Ian is a known sports car enthusiast and is the scion of the Victoria Court motel empire. Joey was at the peak of her modelling career, known for her quirky ways on the catwalk and mad hosting skills. Joey had just finished walking on the runway for a magazine party celebrating their latest covers. Ian, clad in an all-white three-piece suit with matching fedora, saw Joey, who was wearing an off-shoulder boho summer dress, and was immediately smitten. He asked me for an introduction. “Are you sure?” I asked.

Turns out Ian was so sure about his attraction for Joey, that a few years into their relationship, they got married in the US in 2011. They even had a simple ceremony at the village clubhouse where they lived then for friends and family to declare their love for each other, which I hosted. They looked like the perfect, happy couple. They looked hot, loved each other dearly, were at the top of their careers, and had a lot of pets (Joey had grown a fondness for rescuing stray cats and dogs) in their household.

Somewhere in between all of that, Ian had a secret, which he wanted to share with his loved ones. Ever since he was a kid, he had a penchant for wearing women’s clothes. It started off with shoes, then went on to lingerie and makeup. Joey had known about this early on in their relationship, but they decided to keep this side private, for fear of being criticized by a judgmental society.

Angelina Mead King or Angie Mead the transwoman was hidden from the public eye, only revealed in a private Instagram account @hailtothe_queen_. Ian King and Angie Mead are one and the same person. In Angie’s world, Ian could be whoever he wanted to be, free from the eyes of people who couldn’t understand.

But he couldn’t keep it anymore. “I broke down and told myself I can’t live like this.” Ian then told his father and his family about his other side. “My father had a hard time accepting it, but even though he had a hard time in the beginning, he was full support in the end. My stepmom was a supporter and my real mom was also a supporter.” Incidentally, yesterday, July 5, marked the first anniversary of Archie King’s passing.

Through it all, Ian and Joey fought for the love that they had for each other. “Tooth, nail, blood, sweat and tears,” as Joey put it. “I fought a lot. Fought myself…a lot, fought my husband, fought conventionality.” All in the name of unconditional love.

And then last weekend, Angie Mead was set free. Joey and Ian threw all caution to the wind and, armed with the love and respect they had for each other, not to mention the support of family and close friends, the account @hailtothe_queen_ was set to public. Everyone was abuzz.

The overwhelming outpour of support for the non-conventional wife-and-wife couple was something they didn’t expect. “I thought this was going to be a bad dream, but it isn’t.” People encouraged Angie to celebrate her true self and admired Joey for her strength and capacity to love unconditionally in a world where it is easier to just quit.

There are beautiful lessons to be learned here. And we can all learn from the characters here because there is an Ian, a Joey and an Angie in all of us that just needs to be set free.

I spent Sunday with the Kings (and queens) and sat down with Angelina Mead King for this exclusive interview.

TIM YAP: So what do I call you now — Ian or Angie?

IAN KING: I’m okay with anything. In a way, I prefer Angie. The thing with me is I don’t hate my past because I just had a secret, but I don’t hate my childhood, I love my friends. In a way, my closest friends have been friends with me for like 30 years, 29 years and the next is like 16 years, so really, a solid group of friends. And they have known about Angie since 2009.

You have kept the Instagram account @hailtothe_queen_ private for quite some time. What made you open the account to the public?

I was with my stepmom in the other house and we were just talking, “You know people are talking…” I told her and some of my friends have sent me screen shots of other people’s chat groups. And it was like, “Hey, have you heard?” Like it was circulating already, so we were like, “It’s out already, why are we stopping it?”  And everyone was just worried for Joey. So, that day after talking to my mom, I came here to the house and I asked Joey, “Ano, rock and roll na?”

And what did Joey say?

After all the rough situations that we’ve been through, we are at the stage now of …f*ck it, let’s do it. Go forward, be different and just enjoy life.

So, when was the Instagram account @hailtothe_queen_ with Angelina Mead King set up?

2012 I think. And everyone was like, “Hey, someone hacked your account!” I told them, “No guys, it’s true. I am Angie.”

When was Angie born within you? When did you realize you liked to wear women’s clothes?

There was always that interest ever since I was a kid. Like I would sneak into the maids’ room — sadly —and I’d borrow stuff. And then weirdly enough, my dad didn’t always have a partner in the house because my mom and dad were separated. So there were not much women’s clothes at home so the maid’s was like the first and then as it progressed, wherever I could borrow.

So, that was your secret life.

Such a rough spot and a mind f*ck, like what am I doing?!

How old were you then?

Seven or eight, like you’ve walked in your mom’s heels, when you were younger, right? When I was younger, I’d try to fit in another woman’s shoes and I liked it. And I was like, “What’s happening? What is this?”

You know, the funny part in the beginning, it was sensation. But growing up with Joey and sort of taking out fantasy from stuff because it wasn’t practical, you can’t just wear that every day. I liked lingerie in the beginning and then I super got over that.

And at the end, everything becomes practical clothing, everyday wear and stuff. That’s when we knew already I was moving forward. And Joey was like, “You’re moving forward too fast.” But yesterday was it. “Wala na,” she said. “No need to slow down anymore.”

When did you open up to Joey about this thing you had?

A few months into our relationship. I told her I like to wear women’s underwear and it escalated from there.

Of course, this was not gonna be easy for your wife, and you knew that, right?

Joey has had her struggles, we had struggles, but we never separated over it. We have been working through it. I have a counsellor, she has a counsellor, we talk to a lot of friends, family.

What does your counsellor tell you?

To live my authentic self, that’s what all counsellors tell people, I think you pay someone to tell you that you are normal. I’m just thinking that hmmm, I know this already!

Was there ever a time when you thought there was something “wrong” with you?

Yes, as a child, I was always thinking about looking at the other side — the girl side. I wish I had longer hair, I wish I had… And then I already knew in grade 6 or grade 7, that I wanted to be a pretty boy. I was thinking why do I want to be a pretty boy. That’s where it started, and I ignored it. Then came sports, cars, got a baby, got a girl pregnant, and fathered a baby — well, I didn’t father a baby — I “sperm donated” a baby at 16.

He now calls you “Mom,” your son Iñigo.

And then after Iñigo, everything has just been crazy — my life just unfolded. We were talking about it, the circles of friends are so tight that when the outside people ask, “Ano ba to?”  Everyone around is like, “Wala yan!  He’s our brother — back him up!” Or “Yeah we knew all along already.”  I haven’t seen people flinch and people who I haven’t seen in ages are messaging me — I’m getting random messages saying, “You guys are awesome!”  It’s surreal.

Did you have a fear that people would flinch?

Yes, cars are alpha male — highly alpha male environment and lots of testosterone. Last thing we’d wanna see is that…We are very scared about the Philippines because there are no transgender rights here. I’ll be coined “bakla” just like every other rainbow spectrum part of the LGBT community. Because of that yeah, there is that disconnect where it can be hard to actually explain it to my staff. “Ah, bakla si Sir!” That’s all they’d conclude.

Do they ask?

Recently, they have being seeing me walking around in a dress and their face is like, “What’s happening?” That was the hard part. Joey ended up explaining to the driver how the whole situation is, but he still sort of didn’t get it, so he had to talk to my maid, Nora. Joey knew first, Nora knew second and then my family came after. My household was in it from the beginning.

I gave up male underwear maybe two years after dating Joey. And everything just followed.

After your family found out, what was their reaction about it?

My dad had a hard time, definitely, but even though he had a hard time in the beginning, he was full support in the end. My stepmom was my supporter, my real mom was a supporter, too. My brother was little weirded out with it but came on board and then, we started telling… I just told my cousins a few months before this. But now, there is no need to tell anyone, I don’t need to explain myself anymore.

But you are not gay, right? Or are you?

Sexual preference — no, I’m not gay. I like women. Soft, curvy, yeah, no body hair.

That’s where the confusion stems from. That in the end, you still like women.

I perfectly understand. Sexual expression and sexual preference are two different things. There is no clear description in the Filipino native language, there is no Tagalog version of LGBT…and however how many letters there are — that’s where the blurred lines come from.

In your own research about the LGBT, is this where you realized that more than gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, it’s really just a human thing, right?

Me and Joey have been going to LA Pride for a few years, we did Miami Pride this year.  That’s why we travel  because when we travel, no one knows us. I can express myself and figure myself out and then in the recent years since my dad passed away, I’ve been traveling alone because I’m reinventing myself. I’m in a place where no one knows me, they’ve never seen me before, I get to reinvent myself as I unfold. Hence, the traveling — a lot of traveling.

When you first dressed up as a woman in public, how did it feel?

Omigod! Yes, it was super weird. Our first outing night was my birthday back then with Joey. She said, “We are going out!” I said, “Scared!”— I was scared because Manila is so small.

Because Joey said you should go out and face the world the way you are?

We went to Cafe Isabel and we sat there by the corner. I was just in jeans and a loose top, but it was scary. I actually started wearing dresses not too long ago.

What’s your size?

Depends, because on my shoulders, I’m a 10 or 12 and on my here (waist), I’m like a 6.

Do you enjoy shopping?

I love women’s fashion, there are so many choices. Color options, choices, varieties, cuts, everything. You are looking and everything is crazy. I still love doing male things — adrenaline, sports, cars every day obviously and everything with speed.

Aside from coloring your hair, your nails, what else is part of your transformation?

The hair is because I had white hair. I have been lasering for years to remove my body hair so I don’t keep shaving, hair is gross in general.

What were the challenges that you guys had to face with Angie being in the picture?

You actually need to ask that to Joey because she faced most of the challenges, I just faced the fear of rejection. Last thing I want is someone who will face me and say — “I’m gonna kill you.” It’s a possibility, after Orlando, in this homophobic world. It’s just hate. They make it their own personal mission to hate you.

When you go to LA and go out, do you dress as Angie?

Not really, just because I’m not dressed doesn’t mean I’m not Angie. It’s not a costume I put on. When it’s Halloween, people tell me, “Now you can dress as a girl!” Is not a f***ing costume. I don’t do this because it’s a costume, I do this because it’s me. Just like Danish Girl.

In Danish Girl, she had desires to be with a man.

Yes, but you can research this, sexual preference and sexual identity are totally different. Even the way I feel, I like my guy friends but no way. Don’t get me wrong, feminine men are beautiful but overmasculine, hairy and too much muscle … appreciation of people comes in many shapes.

What if as Angie a man will hit on you?

Thank God, I’m tall. I still want to do my athletics, don’t want to lose my abs and that was the most confusing part for me because I go shooting, car racing, surfing, I jump off stuff, we used to fly helicopters, name it, I’ve done it.

So, your dad knew the whole time?

He knew in 2009, when I told my family and my friends. He had a hard time, so our revelation was when he got sick in Germany. I took the whole time, I never went home, I took mini breaks and drove around, but when I was there, I had Joey fly in and then that’s when I broke down and told myself I can’t live like this anymore. I’m going nuts like two sides of me, two voices are fighting. You can do this, you can’t do that. There was confusion and now it’s just clarity. It’s still dreamy at the moment because everyone’s reaction is just amazing. If it was this easy, we should have come out sooner, I told Joey.

Why did you take so long?

Because I was scared, but I finally grew balls to come out. I never imagined this thing we were scared about  was going to liberate us. We never expected it. Not just me, but Joey is overwhelmed with the love and support. Everyone is here for us, it’s really nuts.

When did Joey agree to make it public?

We had really serious arguments about everything, the biggest fear was being badgered by society, we were scared that the trolls of society would attack. They probably still will, but there’s so much love and support and that’s the cool part. I was thinking people might say I’m doing it for marketing. Dude, you don’t just wake up one day and say, “I want be a woman.” It’s something you thought of for a long time.

Where do you guys intend to take this after the revelation and being open to the public about Angie?

That’s what we were wondering about. I sort of feel pressured now, so many people are watching and I feel pressured about it. When I’m in LA, I don’t dress all the time, but I wear androgynous stuff, my normal wear. I need to learn how to do woman stuff, it takes years before you learn sizes and what works for your body type.

Other transwomen, they take pills. Do you take hormones?

I’m taking medication through an endocrinologist, he’s a licensed doctor and he monitors my blood levels every two months and adjusts the hormones. First, it takes testosterone blockers and then you supplement it with estrogen.

When you get this treatment, what’s the end goal of that?

It’s a second puberty where your body is reborn into a different gender because you are alternating it with hormones, so in two to three years, it would be finished and will transfer my body with a distribution of body fat and breasts, that is already starting. I measured when I started. My chest has grown a little — from 36 to 37 — and my waist has gotten smaller.

Is the end goal here to take out your privates and change them into those of a woman?

That’s a weird part, I’m happy with my privates and that should remain private. It’s no one’s business. Why does it matter? I have a partner, we are faithful and loyal. We have been living with each other for more than 10 years. You introduced us and you married us, too. It’s gone full circle.

Did you open this Instagram account to have a venue to post yourself as Angie?

Yes, I need it to connect with other people like me, it makes me feel normal.

Are you, Angie, partial to the color purple?

I just find it royal. I like doing the purple and gold, I have it on my hair, nails, and also in my cars.

What are your friends telling you?

I keep asking my friends: Is this happening? Is it real? And they are like, “Dude, you’re a nice person and there is no reason for people to hate you.”

I also saw some pictures of you being partial to pink.

Yes, I like all the colors. That’s the nice part. You don’t need to be stuck to anything. I like my blacks and grays, but when I want to wear color, yes!

So with this newfound freedom you put up a business in LA, you bought more cars also. When do you tell yourself that you need to buy a new car?

All car collectors will always want to buy a new car. It’s in the picture.

Do you have enough garage space to accommodate all your prized possessions?

Well, that’s why I opened car shops because they supplement the business. It gives me more reasons to show off the cars because I’m promoting my business. We have a car shop here at Veterans Center, it’s beside the old FTI, but my new car shop is located near the C5 area.

How many cars do you have right now?

I have no idea. Maybe 13 here, three in LA.

What I’ve heard is that you have 20?

Probably, because I have three in Germany also.

People know the number of your cars more than you.

Because people follow me on Instagram.

The passing of your dad told you how short life is?

Our family is such strategic thinkers. Since I’m working so hard, let me enjoy the world — travel, meet people. I have so many great friends in Los Angeles and I have been there only for three months. My friends who live there are like, “Dude, you can get in places that we’ve never been in.” “Come with me!,”  Angie says. Everyone is like slow clapping, there are no more bad dreams that are gonna come true.

Because at first, you saw it like it was a bad dream?

Yeah, I thought it was gonna be a bad dream, but it’s not. It’s a beautiful dream, everything is beautiful.

What are you scared of now?

I’m scared of the beauty culture. How women are photoshopped, beautified and cut out into sections that they use for advertising.

And now that’s gonna be upon you, right?

Maybe because I like makeup and stuff, but I don’t wear makeup all the time. Everyone says that Joey and I look alike, because we are in sync with each other so our expressions are really similar. It’s like going into a different country and trying to pick up the accent when you are there.

It’s like you and Joey becoming one in the way you express yourself and the way you look. Because couples end up looking alike. Did you find in your wife a woman to look up to?

Yes, Joey helped me to progress way faster than I would. As much as she enjoyed in the beginning and hated it later on, she realized, wait what’s happening? Just like in The Danish Girl, I broke her because she lost face where her knight in shining armour wanted to be a princess… That was the hard part for us, but we picked up the pieces, we figured out what our relationship was — we love each other and this is not gonna break us. Rock and roll, let’s try, are you gonna give up before you try, this is what we are trying. Joey is super pumped also because there is so much support for her, too; she’s more awesome than awesome.

When Caitlin Jenner came out, did you think that was the sign you were waiting for? Did you want to come out at that time also?

I believe everything is timing also. I was happy that Caitlin came out because she was out as a male and now is Caitlin. That makes it easier to describe to people like, hey, I’m transitioning. What do you mean? Doing a Caitlin Jenner — it’s the fastest and easiest way to deliver the statement before the questions start coming in.

Did she become a peg for you?

Yes, she was the peg. That’s what she wants to be also so it’s very cool. Makes you feel even more normal when bigger individuals do something like this. It’s funny because on my social media, the girls follow me because of my fashion,  and the guys because of the cars and travels, now I feel pressured.

Right now, what is your state of mind?

Dreaming, I can’t believe it is happening like this.

What's Behind the Glamour

In the entertainment industry, any talent should essentially have a manager or a management team who will devote their time to organize schedules, close deals, and attend to the needs of the said talent. Whenever the said talent has an entourage, which could include makeup artist, stylist, production assistant, among others, these people have to be on the talent’s payroll. Moreover, the practice is that the manager, who is the one who seeks, negotiates, and closes projects, is given a small commission. The problem starts when the talent refuses to release such commission.

To make Indifferent Celebrity (IC) look beautiful and alluring in front of cameras, services of a competent team are needed. IC looks very different without makeup compared to her fully made up face, and some could not recognize her without makeup. To avoid losing time during makeup, IC hired people to make her look good. Then, to assure that her affairs are organized, IC availed of services of professionals who attend to her beck and call. The deal allegedly is that IC should pay the commission of a Professional Practitioner (PP).

After several attempts at getting in touch with IC, PP has reached the highest level of frustration. Apparently, IC has ignored PP. The bottom line is that IC owes people who have served as her support system a substantial amount of money from commissions. While PP was able to talk to IC and agreements were reached concerning the said payment, IC did not keep her word. So frustrated were the unpaid staff, they even attempted to contact and to seek help from the glamorous circle of IC. They were unsuccessful.

Although IC is not in the entertainment industry, she is quite popular in her field that sometimes crosses over showbiz. IC also has endorsements as indicated by publicity materials that show her and rely on her face as the image of their products. Besides, IC comes from a well-known family who is much respected in high society. Given her background, the staff, comprising of ordinary hard workers, wonder why IC could not even keep her word to pay them. Stories have it that IC will soon get married, and yet amidst her preparations, she has opted to be harder than a rock when it comes to paying up. It’s too bad that such a pretty face could be so uncaring and cold to the situation of ordinary folks.

Donning a Bratty Attitude

A brat will always be a brat, especially if parents make sure they are at their child’s beck and call. When Bratty Talent (BT) dreamt of wanting to become famous, her Closest Kin (CK) made sure she had every opportunity to hone her talents. Then, when she had to enter various competitions, CK did what was expected, which is to go all out to make sure BT succeeds.

When BT expressed her desire to join the entertainment industry, opportunity knocked. Naturally, her biggest fans are CK and the rest of the family. CK made the rounds to gain the confidence of every individual who will have a say in BT’s growth in the business. With CK just around the corner, BT is strengthened.

While entering showbiz is supposed to make one independent at the very least, BT made sure that the first persons she would run to are CK. Thus, CK are her eyes and ears as well, and at certain moments seem to remind people that BT is an important person. Given such attitude, the production people are the ones who get to bear the attitude of BT and CK.

Production people, from the lights personnel, cameramen, to makeup artists, have to follow a schedule for shoots to be accomplished within the deadline. Thus, when an artist comes late, the whole schedule could be messed up. BT is allegedly among the habitual latecomers, which has made the prod people adjust to her whims. When BT has to be made-up, she has to stand out. If BT or CK were dissatisfied with the look of the former, expect them to reprimand the makeup artist. Sometimes, they would even demand for a redoing of the whole look. The extra effort demanded and the hurtful words said add to the stress of the prod people, but they really could not do anything.

In one instance, CK almost threw a fit over a hairstyle for a huge event. As soon as CK saw the look of BT, they wanted a change immediately. However, they could not, as the stylists were already fussing over a network executive. CK and BT had to wait, and once they had their turn, CK said that the beauty staff only wanted to make beautiful the other newbie, which was not true at all, as the staff was just doing their job.

Got to Avoid Her

Irksome Personality (IP) has earned her reputation from the attitude she has shown to people in most of the programs she had joined. Although she has the looks and talent, her attitude and treatment of people can be annoying. Her coworkers are wondering why IP seems to be callous that she has to change the way she presents herself both behind and in front of the cameras.

Production people have observed that IP seems unmindful of certain practices that behind the scene people follow. What IP wants, she does without regard for such people. For instance, when she is being made-up, she does not sit on the chair, which would make putting on makeup easy. Instead, she wants her makeup put on while she’s lying down. This position slows down work and when her cue is up, she would ask her makeup artist to move quickly or else the poor worker will be reprimanded. Thus, makeup artists would prefer to work with other celebrities, who are pleasant and cooperative.

Sadly, IP seems to think she is entitled to her quirks. After all, she is the personality. Besides, she has connections that could assure her of her status in the network. When a production head learned of the negative stories surrounding IP, decisions were made and she was dropped from an impending project. The team did not want to risk having a diva in their midst who might cause trouble and slow down the taping. Besides, other instances have shown that IP could be antagonistic and sarcastic toward her co-hosts, which can indeed be very irritating. Then, her recent projects did not fare well at all and she was singled out for her attitude even by viewers. Inevitably, getting IP in any project would require much thinking prior to her hiring. Until she changes her attitude, her projects will be limited or none at all, and asking her connection to intercede on her behalf can only go so far.

Be Reasonable

The current situation is testing many relationships. As the ECQ has limited movement to only essential travel, leisure trips and visits to significant others were put to a halt. Thus, video calls were relied upon to make sure the relationships remain visible and strong.

Like most couples, Secretive Actress (SA) and Hunk Boyfriend (HB) had to follow strict quarantine rules. However, SA came to a point that her desire to be with HB was becoming uncontainable. SA called HB and told him to come over immediately. HB said that he could not, as their area is under lockdown and travel to see SA might be too risky. SA was disappointed, but HB assured her that he will makeup for his inability to be with her.

However, HB could not feel relaxed, as SA used one of her teaser stories to make him agitated. SA joked that if HB could not be with her to give her the pleasure she wants, she’ll just visit her Well-endowed Crush (WC). HB knows that SA would always make jokes about WC to make him jealous. HB is aware that SA has a terrible crush on WC, but that is the limit to what he knows. He remains clueless that SA has been with WC, but their encounters are tightly guarded secrets. WC has a long-term girlfriend, whom he intends to marry. SA knows about the said girlfriend, and she does not want to hurt HB as well.

SA was persistent in asking HB to come over. With that persistence, HB knows that SA is feeling a strong urge to do it and he might get in trouble if she does not get what she wants soon. The next day, HB did his best to beat the obstacles to meet up with SA. HB was willing to do everything to relieve SA of her urge.

When the househelp saw HB, they got the hint. Predictably, SA told them to go to the grocery and buy their essential supplies. With HB around, the help knew something was going to happen in the room of SA and they got the drift over why they were being sent to an errand. Not even a pandemic can stop SA and HB release their heat in the privacy of her room.

Repost: Maine Mendoza Opens up to Her Self-esteem Issues

Last night, I listened again to my taped interview of you for the cover of PeopleAsia magazine. It was the only interview, aside from the one I did with Nora Aunor last year, that I listened to again after I transcribed its entirety. And I know, I will listen to this interview again if only to remind myself of the few lessons that can be glimpsed upon that conversation between us that lasted 51 minutes and 20 seconds.

You are so real. Twenty-nine minutes into our conversation, Alden Richards, your reel-time boyfriend, entered the room to say hi to you. His eyes lighted up. Yours, too. There were sparks all over the makeup room. He gave you a buss. Your eyes locked and you told him: “Ang pogi mo pa rin.” He smiled. And kissed you again on the cheek. You were both so real, so genuine.

I don’t wonder anymore why the two of you, as major mainstays of Eat Bulaga!’s kalyeserye “Juan For All, All For Juan” are so loved by millions of fans all over the world. You are so adored that the PeopleAsia cover that bears you both on the cover sold like the proverbial hotcake minutes after it hit the magazine stands. Two Saturdays ago, it took only a heartbeat for the first phone call to land at the office of PeopleAsia when the magazine posted the cover on social media. The telephone lines kept ringing. To this day. The already 11,000 likes on PeopleAsia’s Facebook page are still increasing. When Emerald Headway, the magazine distributor, announced that the magazine was sold out in less than 48 hours, many of the members of the AlDub Nation called me to secure them a copy. One friend said she would send a copy to Poland — to a Polish AlDub fan. Another very good friend of mine who lives in Forbes Park is still waiting to get hold of her PeopleAsia issue with you and Alden on the cover.

You said you’ve met already Kris Aquino, the first subject of your dubsmashing, and she told you that “she will try to guest you and Alden” on her show — in the rival station of  your home network GMA-7. I’m quite excited to see that. But more than that, I’m looking forward to reading your first novel (a la Message in a Bottle or A Walk to Remember by your favorite author Nicholas Sparks), which you said is in the offing. But first, you promised yourself, you have to get back to writing a few more chapters to finish it.

Despite your popularity, you remain grounded. In fact, to this very moment, you remain clueless how to explain the phenomenon of the AlDub’s dizzying popularity. I like the fact that you acknowledge that you are famous now but this concept does not swell your head. “It is my prayer that this blessing continues,” you told me. “But I am also aware that this is not all possible without the support of the AlDub fans.” And if only I could describe how gratitude lounged on your face when you mentioned the word “AlDub Nation,” I’m sure your loyal fans would create another world just because of how happy they would become.

Those who look up to you will learn financial literacy from you. What did you buy from your first check from Eat Bulaga? “Waley (None),” you said. From your second check? “Waley pa rin.” From your earnings in your almost 20 TV commercials? “Waley talaga.” Because?  “I’m kuripot. I do not see the need to touch my earnings. I have not thought of what to invest in yet. But I am also not known to splurge.”

Your face, even before the famous Steven Doloso could doll you up, was already beautiful. I complimented you very sincerely. You shyly said “Thank you.” You added, “I am not convinced that I am beautiful. Hindi po gano’n ang tingin ko sa sarili ko. I have low self-esteem. Kahit anong papuri po ang matanggap ko na maganda ako, hindi ko po ito pinaniniwalaan.” But I still believe you are beautiful — inside out.

“Nakaranas ka bang maghirap?” I asked you.

“Hindi po,” you answered albeit tentatively. You were actually timid to answer this question.

“Is it safe to assume that everything was presented to you on a silver platter?”

“Opo. Pero hindi naman po sa lahat ng bagay.”

You never went hungry, you told me. The material things were ably provided for by your parents. Your mom, an accountant, owns five Shell gasoline stations in Bulacan. Your dad, an engineer, has his own construction company that builds roads in Metro Manila. The wants and whims, so to speak, of their five children were no problem to them.

Then, 34 minutes into our conversation, I asked you: “Saan ka lamang nagkulang? Anong bagay lamang ang hindi naibigay sa iyo.”

You cried. For a minute. I saw your tears. Celeste Tuviera, a sought-after hairstylist, stopped fixing your hair. She pulled some tissue from a box and handed it to you. You kept quiet. I looked at your reflection in the mirror. I saw your pain. Through your tears I saw your vulnerability, your sincerity. I had a glimpse of your heart, of your soul. I kept quiet, too. I honored your pain. I gave you dignity in celebrating your pain.

I was ready to abandon my last question just so I could navigate our conversation somewhere else. But you opted to dignify my query. You opted to honor your own pain, perhaps thinking that by being honest, you could liberate yourself.

“TLC. Tender loving care. ‘Yun po ang hindi naibigay sa akin. Kulang po ako sa atensyon noong bata ako,” you said.

“If there’s one thing beautiful that this popularity has brought me, it is that I have become close to my family.”  And when you found it awkward that you were shedding tears in the presence of nine other people at the interview, you countered yourself by exhibiting a bit of your Yaya Dub face, the face that you comically contort on national TV.

“I have a lot of realizations about my parents, my siblings, about my relationship with them. Affected po ako kapag sila ang topic. Unusual changes are happening now. I did not have the same attention from them when I was growing up. Kulang po ako sa atensyon. But slowly, I am getting used to their attention. I thank the Lord for this opportunity for my family and me to become close. Ito na po ang tamang panahon to make things right. Little by little,” you said, professing your love, pure and simple, for your parents and siblings.

From then on, I have become a fan of your heart. I felt your pain but I also felt your genuine desire to make things “right.” You said you have forgotten the pain of losing two amorous relationships but this newfound relationship with your family is what keeps your 20-year-old soul going. Your honesty is indelible, incandescent even.

You told me many times in the interview that your life “is boring and uneventful;” that you were like a “plant” and your life would go on without being noticed. You turned to Dubsmash — thus your sobriquet Yaya Dub —  and created a world all your own as you created more than 60 short selfie videos with sounds and spiels of famous people.

But fate — for someone who wanted to become an artista but knew she was “ugly” and did not have what it takes to become one — has played an auspicious trick on you. Your beauty inside out was revealed. And this is one reality that will remain in the hearts of the millions of people who see through your sincere and grateful heart.

The last voice I heard in my interview was yours. “Thank you po,” you said. I, too, am grateful.

Maine, you impress upon me the goodness of the human spirit. And, as always, good things happen to good people.

A fan of your heart, Büm

Just Bring Yourself

Whenever accomplished celebrities are asked for advice on their secrets for success, they often mention the hardships they had surpassed before reaching their status. Most would cite stories of how they would be alone in lining up for auditions, cry whenever they were not picked, and remain hopeful when their preparation leads to failure.

However, a concrete lesson that they often emphasis is being independent in their dealings. For example, as they still had to keep every expense within a budget, they had to learn to put on makeup, choose the right outfit, and project that their style is the most fashionable. Compared to these celebrities whose experiences have made them humble, Time-Challenged talent (TC) seems to be moving with no care for money and reputation.

Compared to the celebrities cited above, TC is still trying to stabilize her career despite belonging to a big network and having many projects. While she will make heads turn, TC’s fame is elusive, and observers attribute her inability to become popular to her attitude. One time, TC had a guesting with a huge network. Things would have worked out well had TC were more conscious of time.

The production crew of the said show was on pins and needles, as they still could not find TC, whose call slip indicated that TC should have arrived hours ago. Finally, TC arrived, but there was a slight commotion that the production team had to address. TC came with her entourage, and following them were security personnel. The production team had to assure security that all were part of the team of TC, just to save face. Thus, TC was told not to bring so many people with her, as they would only create chaos and run the risk of being doubted by other celebrities because of unfamiliarity. This made TC think because each one in her team had a task. Other than her makeup artist, wardrobe consultant, the rest of her team comprised assistants who would take care of her belongings.

The head of the production was fuming as TC came without being prepped up. Thus, as soon as she got to her space, her team started to fix her, put on makeup, and prepare her for her scene. The head started to call for the cast and TC was still not ready. As the show was about to start, the head started screaming at the backstage to make sure everyone knew the irritation. This scenario sent shivers because the talk hinted on TC not being granted another appearance at the said show.

While her contemporaries abide by the unspoken rules on discipline, TC seems to believe that her stature should be accorded with all the perks of a VIP, which, unfortunately, is all in her head.

Please Go Away

Famous personalities are bestowed with connections that ordinary people can only dream of. For instance, their presence can make people give in to their requests for discounts, good seats, and freebies. They get gifts and receive favors from their followers and even strangers. With reputation and connections, people can go far in pursuing what they feel is their entitlement given their position.

Unfortunately, Celebrity Endorser (CE) learned a lesson in a very embarrassing way, and it took foreigners to bring her back to reality. CE has always had a chummy side and she’s been known to be extra friendly to people, especially the handsome ones. Part of her work is to seek local and international personalities and make them feel welcome to the country. However, when work is over, CE has another reputation, which is often linked to her image.

Sometime ago, CE decided to extend her welcoming warmth to a group of international performers, who made the country one of their stops. Using her connections, CE bypassed security measures to reach the room where the group was. When they saw CE, she made the excuse that she was meeting them to get more stories. Having travelled all over the world, the group realized CE was up to something, as she came to the room with nothing but herself.

After relaxing a bit, the group agreed to what CE had in mind. However, before anything could proceed, they requested her to wash off the smell of smoke and other elements that came from an event they had attended. During the event, CE was already hinting on what she wanted to happen, but it still surprised the group to see CE knocking at their door.

CE agreed to the request and washed off everything, including her makeup. Feeling all freshened up, CE was shocked because the group asked her to leave when she stepped out of the show. Without makeup, the group did not find CE to their standards and they thought she was not female. With a damaged ego, CE went down to the lobby. When she was seen, people wondered why her hair was wet. She simply said that she had a bath somewhere. This time, CE did not succeed in implementing her scheme.

Getting Bizarre Again

The process of taping a drama series is not an easy task for it involves various stages and tens of people. When a drama series is conceptualized, the director and his staff have to put the idea of the writers to come alive onscreen. The wardrobe people plan what the characters will wear. The light and sound crews make sure the equipment are all working. The assistant director (or someone else) outlines the scenes, location, and actors needed. Therefore, any problems, such as the weather, can ruin the schedule of all these people.

A few days ago, the taping of a drama series was packed up and it was not because of the bad weather. Rather, the cause of the non-shooting was the refusal of the lead actress (LA) to enter the location of their shoot. LA was already in the vicinity of the taping as the production people already saw her van. The makeup people did not worry about LA because at times, she refused to have herself fixed. She can prepare herself for what her role demands. Yet, some people can be mean by saying that LA refuses to wear makeup because her face cannot hold it.

The crew had already prepared the location, which was somewhere south of the Manila and where the weather was cooler. They waited for LA to step down from the van. Their wait was futile. LA refused to budge. She did not want to get out of her van. Instead of convincing LA harder, the production team conceded to her demand and packed up the taping.

While LA is known for her obnoxious ways, she actually has a caring personality for the some sectors of the community. However, when the taping was packed up because of her whimsical reasoning, LA forgot that her being a prima donna at that moment affected not just her schedule but also the commitments of her co-stars. LA also forgot that some crew members are paid on a daily basis, and that the location owner gets some remuneration.

The question is what made LA uncomfortable with the chosen location. Did it bring about significant memories that she did not want to remember?

Can you identify who LA is? Please abide by the RULES in writing comments if you want me to post them. Initials and comments that are too explicit will not be accepted.

It is almost unusual to see models walk the runway without those heavy mascara, bedazzling eyes and full plump lips on the runway, but at the New York Fashion Week on September 11, designer Marc Jacobs opted for something different by showing his spring/summer collection with a parade of makeup-free models.

Braving the bare face look, the models, including the A-lister Kendall Jenner and Victoria’s Secret angels Adriana Lima and Karlie Kloss strutted on the catwalk wearing military-inspired ensembles. All of the models sported a punk rock bowl cuts.

Francois Nars, the official makeup artist of NYFW, said it was the easiest job ever. Not even a lip balm was involved during the styling.

"This goes back to one of the looks that I’ve always loved — bare skin, nothing on the face, lips or eye, just beautiful skin," he added.

Jing Monis Recounts Incident with Brazilian Model, Gabriela Barros

Renowned hairstylist Jing Monis contacted Fashion PULIS to give an account of the incident that led to his online outburst at Brazilian model Gabriela Barros. Accordingly, Monis was disrespected by the rude attitude of the model.

In a bridal fashion show in a hotel down south, Monis was the official sponsor for hair and makeup. Throughout the afternoon, Monis and his crew made sure every model was prepped up. However, the task was not easy, as the models kept standing up and moving around, which made the makeup time longer. It seems that the foreign models hired for the show felt they could do whatever they wish simply because the staff comprised Filipinos. This delay added to the tense atmosphere.

After the models ate dinner and the show was about to start, Monis made a last minute check of the hair and makeup of the models. After all, the name and reputation of Monis was at stake, and thus, he had to make sure everyone was perfect. Then, when Monis saw the disheveled hair of Barros, he was aghast, as brides are supposed to have a neat and well-styled hair.

Monis approached Barros and asked if she were modeling. If Barros were not going on stage, then Monis would not have been concerned with her looks. Instead of responding to Monis, Barros allegedly ignored the hairstylist and continued to converse and laugh with her fellow model in Portuguese. Keeping his composure, Monis repeated his question, but Barros continued to ignore him, which angered Monis. Monis then called the attention of Barros and told her that she does not even have a work permit, and he walked away.

Later, Barros together with her agent, Gibby Arca, went to Monis. Instead of a positive outcome, Barros allegedly pointed at Monis and started her jab, claiming that she has been modeling for five years. Arca then mediated and tried to pacify the parties. Arca apologized to Monis for the attitude of Barros.

Given his more than 25 years of experience as stylist for various fashion shows and celebrities, Monis has never encountered anyone with the attitude of Barros. The issue between Monis and Barros puts to light the number of foreign models being hired for local shows. The problem is that some of the foreign models do not have a work permit, and the fashion industry remains blind at this situation. Moreover, these models might not even be paying the proper taxes. In any industry, while looks or beauty might be important, attitude and behavior are essential factors that create goodwill and respect.

Note: Fashion PULIS welcomes the side of Gabriela Barros and Gibby Arca.
