    1. Even in the corporate world, specially in international business where both parties speak different languages, it's ok that you can't speak english. They have translators for that

      Delete
Sad world we live in.

      Delete
    3. Agree. I work in the corporate world. Internal communications in companies are not strict with every grammar rule

      Delete
    4. Let's be pragmatic, Kelsey. The English language is part of the educational system in the country. It would be a waste of money and effort if one doesn't even try to learn, speak and write it in school.

Do you think it's ok for Filipinos to apply for jobs not knowing anything about the English language? Can you communicate anywhere in the world without knowing English? Yung totoo?!

Do you think people from other countries will be the one making the "adjustment" for you just because you don't speak English, which is the UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE?! Yung totoo?!

What was implied was that when we make mistakes, we shouldn't feel that bad considering we're not native speakers. If course, it is still important to convey your message accurately but we shouldn't be too hard on ourselves sa grammar

      Delete
Chill...

    7. Daming sinatsat ni 1:07 ate basahin mo ulit sinabi ni kelsey!

    8. 1:07 Actually over here in the US, the English speaking people are usually the ones trying to adjust for other nationalities who do not speak English especially with Hispanic people. Some companies even preferred to hire people who are bi/multi-lingual. It's a discrimination to not hire non-English speakers.

      Delete

    10. haha bakit bpo ba trabaho mo

      Delete
    11. 1:07 has a point. English is our second language and our medium of instruction in school. We just need to use the basic English. And 95% of our books in school are on English. But please , let us not be too conscious of the simple mistakes in using this language. Kahit mga American nagkakamali din.

    12. Depende.. if you have a higher profession, e.g. RN in the states or Canada, you are expected to have a score of 8-9 in IELTS. You will also do a lot of verbal reporting (daily meetings with the interdisciplinary team, referring the patient to the doctor, and so forth). You are expected to have a good oral and written communication skills.. You should also sound neutral. Totoo po.. English is gauge to measure somebody’s proficiency. People here in North America will automatically label you once they hear your accents.. Acceptable pa if may accent ka, basta at least tolerable ang grammar.

    18. I guess it depends on where you’re working. Been working in an MNC (abroad) for almost a decade and while it’s true that they are not particular about grammar when you speak, they are VERY particular about it when you write (in my experience). A lot of people here say that foreigners are also bad in English but what I noticed is that this is true for the rank & file employees however for the C levels, they are actually really good at it (and we’re talking about non-native English speakers here).

      Delete

    1. No way. Its not my fault that I was raised in a school where english is only our language. Son't be too judgmental. Its worse than not being able to speak tagalog

      Delete
    2. I'm not comfortable speaking tagalog because it is not my native language. I'm Filipino and my language of choice is Visayan. When I get to speak with people from Luzon, don't get offended that I would prefer to reply back in English because it's just awkward for us to speak Tagalog. No, this is not a Tagalog vs Bisaya debate. I'm just saying that you can be very Pinoy but not speak Tagalog.

      Delete
    3. All comes down to parenting choices. Although, better to raise kids bilingual or multilingual depending on ethnicity. ‘Yung bata rin ang madedehado kung lalaki na isang language lang ang alam kung pwede namang mas marami. It’s an advantage to be fluent in your native tongue plus one other widely used language. In our family, lahat can speak Filipino and English regardless saan part sila ng mundo lumaki. Then those who turned out na mixed ethnicity na through their parents’ marriages, add pa nung language ng mom or dad depending kung ano ‘yun. But never mawawala ang Filipino.

      Delete
    4. Duh! And when did teaching Tagalog to one's kids become a gauge for good parenting?

And for the smart-shamers: Being proficient in a foreign language i.e. Russian, German, English, et al, is a good measure of sizable intelligence.

Conversely, just because you can't speak or write in perfectly good English doesn't mean you're intelligent.

Basahin mo ulit

      Delete
    7. I beg to disagree. The language you choose to teach your children is not a gauge of good parenting. Sometimes one has to be practical in these matters. In my case, I speak English to my kids because we live in an English-speaking country. My kids have second languages but these are languages of countries where they plan to study for college (hence the need to master that particular language). I wish my kids could be multilingual and learn Tagalog but alas, they don’t have that capacity. So, should I be called a bad parent just because I choose to be practical?

      Delete
    8. mga mexicans na dito na raise sa US are mostly bilinguals.. kids have the capacity to learn up to 4 languages habang bata pa. since nasa english speaking country sila matutunan naman nila yang language sa labas so di kailangan mag worry kung Tagalog sa bahay.

      Delete
    9. 10:36, you said it yourself - mostly bilingual. Maybe most kids have the capacity to learn up to 4 languages but not all of them and it won’t be easy on them especially if learning the language entails learning how to write the characters i.e. Japanese & Chinese.
My colleague’s kids are fluent in Tagalog but not in English because they only speak English when in school. When they moved here the kids had a hard time coping up in school. They said they can’t quite understand their teachers and they can’t express themselves either so they ended up going back to the Philippines :(

    1. Beg to disagree.

Proficiency in a foreign language is a good measure for intelligence.

Stop smart-shaming and learn a language other than your native language rather than justifying your ineptness to speak or write in any foreign language.

      Delete
    2. 1:17 very well said in both languages. that's right stop smart-shaming to justify personal deficiencies.

      Delete
    3. Learning another language is NOT a measure of intelligence. It’s a SKILL. Magkaiba po ‘yun. Maawa po kayo sa mga deaf-mute. Hindi po sila bobo.

    4. 1:30 agree ako sayo. Kaya nga tawag dun is "Communication skill".

    5. Beg to disagree. It is called LINGUISTIC INTELLIGENCE.

      Try reading this: https://blog.adioma.com/9-types-of-intelligence-infographic/

    6. It is a measure of intelligence.

      Delete
    7. 1:17 are you saying na ang mga Japanese, Thai, Russian, Chinese, American, German who know only their native language ay mga Bobo?

Language is never a measurement of intelligence kasi andaming mga Scientists na native o iisang language lang ang alam.

    7. Apologize is the preferred spelling in American and Canadian English, and apologise is preferred in varieties of English from outside North America. This is the case despite the fact that apologize is the original form and was once standard even in British English (and is still used by some British publishers).

    1. Mastery of a language to convey messages is one of the aspects in measuring intelligence. However, it doesn't state that it has to be English. But yeah, I get what you're saying.

      Delete
    2. Learning a new language makes you smarter, it "neuro-cizes" your brain :D But in the Philippines we look at languages relative to what country brought it to us: English - American, progressive, inventions, hollywood. Spanish - oppression, don and donyas, hacienderos, noli me tangere. Japan - japayukis, entertainers. We hear someone speak in Japanese and one thing that comes to mind is "nagtrabaho sa Japan or nakapag-asawa ng Hapon". It's more of the association to the language. One thing I observe from hearing some pinoys who try to speak in English is that they tend to make an impression rather than convey a message, like speaking in English makes them look intelligent or classy. Our "English" is also very showbiz. Once in a convenience store I heard a group of office people talk to each other in English, and they all sound like Kris Aquino or Ruffa Mae Quinto. Pansinin din nyo, when someone breaks into English in a conversation bakit biglang may, "uuuy english yun ha", tapos maghihiyawan na. Makes me wonder.

  8. I beg to disagree. Because of that, we are left behind by many countries. We cant able to compete with them in terms of education and economy. Lets face the truth and swallow our pride that english is still the universal language. We cant communicate with foreigners without knowing and correctly doing it.

    7. Wrong. We are the best english speakers in whole of Asia. That’s why we are favored by call centers and BPOs. However, we’re still lagging behind Asian powerhouses such as China, Japan and South Korea in terms of economy and progress.

  9. I'm a language trainer in a BPO and one of the things I learned is that a lot of Filipinos have a fear with speaking in public because they themselves would criticize other people when they notice errors (in communication) so they clam up when it's their turn to speak because they know they will be judged the way they judge others. In my experience, I've seen a lot of top performers who are nowhere near having perfect English comms skills.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. you are right 12:52. Your English errors will define you as a person that's why pinoys are so afraid to practice their English because they know the consequences. Look at Alma Moreno, Melanie Marquez, Erap they have become the epitome of shamed just because of their wrong English. If we want our own people to be proficient in English then let's give each other encouragement to practice and commit mistakes in the process not shaming each other. It has been the norm to look up to people who speak english fluently so why not make everyone feel at home with wrong grammar and mistakes while trying to practice? Let's stop being hypocrites. Tayo kahit graduate ng college di makaenglish ng diretso dahil natatakot at nahihiya dahil nga pintasera tau. Kaya di tayo natututo. In Southeast Asia those who can speak English really speak it well but here in our country we a lot of us cannot even speak English with confidence kahit pa degree holders. Aminin natin yan kahit magconduct kayo ng research. Kaya magasay ko lang we should show appreciation to those who try and commit mistakes while practicing and learning to speak English. It is only through practice that we can learn to be fluent and be confident to speak English na ginagawa na ngang measure of intelligence para pumasa sa job interview. Aminin natin between an applicant who speaks English well and one who is just 50-50 eh the former is more favored. Huwang nang magkunwari because this is the reality. So paano na? Di ba pwedeng practice at magkamali para matuto at maging kapareho nyong fluent mag-inglis. Basta sa laht ng ito it's given that we lab our pinoy mader language and it won't harm us to learn and speak other languages lalo na at pintasero pa naman tayo.

      Delete
    2. I was like that when I came to us. I was so afraid to speak because I was afraid American wont understand me, worse they will laugh at me. But my husband told me just talk. Who cares if my English is bad, or I have the accent. American wont mind. And he said the more i communicate un English, the better I get which is true. I may not proficient with English yet but it’s way better than before..

      Delete

      Delete
    4. I think we Pinoys are just too sensitive. Pero sabagay depende rin sa pagkakasabi kasi. When people correct me regarding my errors, I thank them. At least someone was concerned enough to point it out so I won’t commit the same mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  14. yes, truth actually. Here in N America, people don't care your grammar when you speak, it's the message that they want to understand. And that's what matters.

  22. Grammar and spelling mistakes do not matter as much as meanings and tone do. There’s commendable effort in making every detail make sense but if you use that to overthrow other people for silly mistakes, then there’s a problem within the corrector than the corrected.
