Letter from a Reader: Fashion Designer Laments Alleged Copying of Design for Gown Worn by Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach in Beauty Product Ad

Dear Fashion PULIS,

I just want to inform you about the issue regarding the gown worn by Pia Wurtzbach in the new Olay commercial. I had a brief conversation months ago with Pia's stylist Adrianne Concepcion about making skintight dresses for Pia since her figure is in top condition. She said the dresses were for Pia to have a wide option of what to wear for her events.

I said I would consider, but since I became really busy at the time, we simply lost touch, and I assumed the request was forgotten.

Fast forward to last week, I got messages from lots of people asking about Pia Wurtzbach and congratulating me for the gown she was wearing in the new Olay commercial. I was confused, and when I saw the ad, my heart dropped to my stomach. It was a yellow version of the white gown I made last April. It was the very same gown I made for Lovi Poe in her new movie The Escort (which was filmed months ago). It's a signature style I’ve made and used in different colors and variations since March this year.

I don't know Jot Losa personally, but we are aware of each other, as we both used to be in the Manila Fashion Festival, we have many common designer friends. I am also aware of his tendencies of recreating "pegs" for celebrities like Anja Rubik's Vacarello high slit gown, which he recreated in Navy Blue for Anne Curtis. Thus, I'm just shocked how he thinks no one would notice this.

Both Jot Losa and stylist Adrianne Concepcion are aware of my work. One thing that also confirmed this to me is the fact that when we were making the first sample of this gown, I designed it to be a halter neckline. My seamstress made a mistake and we ended up making the straps rest on the tip of the shoulders, which was a specific feature adopted by Jot Losa for Pia's gown.

Now, I could just stay silent about this issue or I could speak up and maybe start a discussion about integrity amidst peg requests from clients and stylists. Although fashion design cannot be protected by law, it's still extremely unfair for someone to steal your work and (using a high profile personality like Pia) claim it as theirs.

Thank you and more power to you, Fashion PULIS.

Note: Fashion PULIS is open to the side of Jot Losa and Adrianne Concepcion.

    3. 3:03 That's called competition, which is good actually. Your hugot has nothing to do with stealin fashion and archi designs.

    4. Are you sure pinoys lang ang manggagaya? Check out yun issue ng Zara. And actually most mid level brands na foreign din nga ginaya yun mga upscale brands noh

    4. "My seamstress made a mistake and we ended up making the straps rest on the tip of the shoulders, which was a specific feature adopted by Jot Losa for Pia's gown."

yan yung particular na sinabing ginaya, yung linya lang talaga napansin mo? ano to, spot the difference?

    1. Agree. The designers can yak all they want but unless they register for an industrial design protection, they really can't stop others from copying their design.

  8. My daughter was a client of Tony Evan and I've seen his designs back in May. This was his own creation. Those people posting here does not know anything about Tony Evan's design so back off. Obviously you cannot afford to wear his designs.

    1. The issue is not about affordability.

    2. Hindi naman kailangan bilhin para malaman lang ang design. Libre ang Google. Daming pasosyal diteeeeey!

    3. 7:32 You don't have to be condescending to prove your point. At most comments here are siding with Tony E. so sino pinaparinggan mo?

      Delete
    4. You cannot afford to wear his designs?

  9. Tony Evan that's so sad and infuriating, push mo yan to shame the copy cat designer. I wonder how much a dress like that.
