Reader's Review: A Second Chance

A Second Chance (Star Cinema, 2015) : Starring Bea Alonzo, John Lloyd Cruz, Dimples Romana
Directed by: Cathy Garcia-Molina; Written by Carmi Raymundo and Vanessa Valdez

Lovelier The Second Time Around but Falling Short of Greatness
by. Atty. Ferdinand Topacio

Had Aguinaldo crossed his troops over to Manila after the Spanish Armada's defeat in the hands of Dewey, but before the Americans landed ground troops in Intramuros, our country's history would have been radically different.

How is that historical "what if" relevant to the One More Chance redux called A Second Chance, you ask. Well, just like Aguinaldo, director Cathy Garcia-Molina had the opportunity to transcend the boundary between "good" and "great" but refused to cross the line; and in film-making, as in love and war, he who hesitates is lost.

Do not get me wrong: A Second Chance is a cut above the rest, intelligent yet entertaining, and everything is above par: direction, editing and writing. The acting part is a given, with two of today's best in the field -- John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo -- playing the leads. In fact, as a sequel to "One More Chance," it is in all respects a better film: aside from the benefit of a full back story for the protagonists, JLC and Bea have also themselves matured as thespians, and were able to fully utilize the now-complex dimensionality of the characters they portray.

Which is just as well, because it being more of a character study, the story is not at all intricate: it starts where the first movie left off, but in medias res (just like the first). Popoy and Basha have married and -- in a series of flashbacks-- we are shown the ceremonies, a typical aspirational bourgeois wedding. The first few years show no portends of the storms to come: after Popoy refuses an overseas job offer to be with his new bride, the newlyweds found an engineering and architectural firm (Gonzalez+Gonzalez) and with husband-and-wife working in tandem, it grows by leaps and bounds. Until tragedy strikes one after the other: a construction site accident (through no fault of Popoy) damages the firm's reputation, Basha suffers a miscarriage and has to stop working, and the firm starts piling up huge losses. Which Popoy keeps from his wife. This however, does not augur well for the union, as Popoy -- driven more and more to drink -- takes out his frustrations on Basha, who is increasingly becoming bored by her imposed domesticity. Eventually, Basha finds out about the horrendous debt and feels betrayed. She contemplates leaving her husband, but her love for him prevails and she returns -- not only to his life but to their firm -- and practically takes over its helm from him. Quiet abruptly, roles are reversed, as Basha starts running the show and Popoy is relegated to second fiddle. This he resents, and after meeting an old flame (well-played by Arci Munoz) who has grown prosperous after taking over the job abroad that Popoy refused, starts thinking whether marrying Basha and staying in the country was "his biggest mistake." Although resisting his ex's sexual advances, Popoy accepts an offer to work in London with her – if only to uplift his self-worth, it would seem -- and tells Basha about his plans to leave. Basha is disconsolate and realizes that that is not, after all, what she wants. Thus, the main conflict arises: will Popoy leave or won’t he? This is quickly resolved – and very quickly at that -- in typical Pinoy fashion with Popoy changing his mind en route to the airport and making a surprise appearance at the wedding rehearsal of one of their mutual friends. It is in that wise that the sequel happily concludes.

The movie departs from the norm with its mostly successful attempts at realism, gamely exploring its theme that the majority of marriages may break apart not because of extraneous causes like a third party, but due to internal strife such as financial difficulties and collision of egos. And indeed, in the middle class diegesic inhabited by the movie’s protagonists, the search for professional and pecuniary success, as well as the “holy grail” that is The Dream House, powers most of their motivations. It is in this unconventional approach to marital strife – a stubborn resistance to succumb to histrionics both in storyline and acting -- where the work shines.

It is also therein that the film stops short of being a great movie. The storyline failed to abandon the clichés that weigh down most local movies, including the “barkada” subplots, the obligatory comedy relief character and the hurried Third Act resolution. There is also the seeming “mandate” to write the dialogue to provide quotable quotes for the audience, which makes for some very hackneyed, unnatural lines; a married couple quarreling in the heat of anger do not talk like poets. The filmmakers should have taken a leaf from Broken Marriage (Ishmael Bernal, starring Vilma Santos and Christopher de Leon [1983]), where the leads were directed to improvise their lines whilst in the scenes where husband and wife would be fighting. And while we understand that this is a sequel, the writer making allusions to most every major scene in the first work is literary baggage that should have been jettisoned.

On the whole, while a fine sequel and an excellent movie in and of itself, it held back from a full-scale departure from conventional Filipino film-making and failed to break new ground (or even just expand on previous formulae), in the end sacrificinggravitas. It fell short of greatness, squandering the opportunity to be this generation’sBroken Marriage (which, with its companion piece Relasyon by the same director being two of the best local films on marital relations).

The local movie-going public has already demonstrated that it can appreciate love stories with atypical “unhappy” endings: The Mistress and Starting Over Again are two cases in point, blockbusters notwithstanding that the protagonists did not live happily ever after. A Second Chance had the, well, chance to push the boundaries even further. Yet it did not take the road less travelled. Sayang. To paraphrase the words of Marlon Brando’s character in On The Waterfront, it could have been a contender.

  1. Yeah i agree. Pero sapat lang naman din siguro na happy ending ang second chance kasi sequel na to from a very good romantic part 1. Parang mejo sad naman kung gagawing mala-The Mistress or Starting Over Again kahit itong Part 2 matagal hinintay ng tao.

    3. Actually, ok nga sana na di muna maghappt ending ang A Second Chance. Like they parted ways... That would make a good baseline for another sequel. So trilogy na toh!

  3. Ok nman sakin ung ending... Kasi nga involve ang marriage may hope pa din na dpt may second chance...unlike mistress and starting over na complicated na if happy ending...tama lng sa movie na di ngkatuluyan ung mga main characters...

Bat di to tumakbong senator? Anyway, i like the review but i have to disagree with your conclusion. D naman yata to heavy drama para gawing relasyon or broken marriage similarity. So tama lang to.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Well for me okay na yun. Kasi marami tarong natututunan.

  7. From the title "A SECOND Chance" that means to say the story revolves from the enormity of their marriage. It talks about surmounting their trails or betrayals. I dont know how good you want it to be or perhaps, you are not the perfect audience.

  8. I watched the movie, and I highly agree that this is not a typical marriage struggles. I find the movie too cliche to the extent of "quotable quotes" that writers focused more than realism. And yes, when married couple argue they don't become poetic!!' Haha... Relaxation story is simple but a reality :)

    1. Mainstream parin to kaya medyo poetic, siguro kung indie wala masyado hugot lines.

      Delete
    2. Audience expected for hugot lines so there the lines turned poetic nga lang, ipinilit kahit hindi appropriate sa scene to think na nag-aaway na yung couple. Typical filipino drama movie.

  9. My reaction after watching the movie... hindi ganun eh. hindi talaga ganun.

Pero they still fight for their love.

    7. 8:36 meron na bang perfect na movie? Lahat naman may kakapusan sa ibatbibang aspeto.

  10. They should have left One More Chance at that. It's already a classic. A Second Chance was made to generate revenue for star cinema, while good, it's a waste of JLC and Bea's stellar acting talents.

    1. I agree, ipinilit, nagpapilit, pinilit hence the second chance, hilaw and kulang. They shoulve just leave one more chance as it is.

  11. OA ang review. Kinwento na lahat ang movie. But i agree at some points but not on the ending that you want. For me mas ok na yung ending nila. Based naman sa title na A 2nd Chance, it implies happy ending.

    ReplyDelete
  12. For me the ending is cliche but ok narin kasi cliff hanger na yun first movie tapos kung cliff hanger pa din to parang expected na kasi ganon nga yun una.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My issue is not the "happy ending"; Broken Marriage also had a happy ending, if ambivalent. What I thought was wanting was the cookie cutter resolution na parang cut and paste lang from previous movies. Tipong deus ex machina na hindi bumagay yung pace with the rest of the work.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The dialogue is part of this movie's charm. Kanya kanyang tatak yan kumbaga. Eh tatak na ng one more chance yun hugot lines so i dont see the point kung tatangalin mo yun just to be realistic.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Doesn't "One More Chance" already mean "A Second Chance" ???

    ReplyDelete

    1. yes redundant nga eh.

      Delete
    2. Oo nga. Dapat "A Third Chance".

      Delete
    4. one more chance as bf/gf a second chance as married couples..

      Delete
    5. nanood ba talaga kayo? sa first movie, nabreak sila at nawala na yung "First Chance". so nagrevolve ung movie sa kung magkakaron pa sila ng "One More Chance", hence the title. Ngayon sa second movie, they got their one more chance kaya "A Second Chance" na.

    7. "Last Mo Na Yan" mas bagay na title

      Delete
    8. Not really. Pag nga one more chance, parang walang qualifier. Parang baligtad title no? Dapat una a second chance then one more chance.

  20. Akala ko ako lang nakulangan sa pelikula. Masyadong nag focus sa mid life crisis, ego, what ifs, at frustrations ni popoy bilang ama. #sorry

    2. Teh, sabi nga ni Popoy "that's marriage" Marriage life ang pinaguusapan sa "A Second Chance". Anong gusto magpakaromcom chuchu? Fairytale? Hindi ganun ang marriage, teh. Marriage has its own ups and downs. It's still a HIT, no matter what. :)

  22. Ako naman i find second chance redunfant as a title for this movie. Kasi dba if you will anayze the title of the first sequel "ONE MORE CHANCE" it is understood nah second chance? O kaya naman parang naging baliktad, kasi they could've titled the part 1 as Second Chance, then the part 2 as One More Chance. Dba mas swak yun?? Sana hindi nalang ginawang Second Chance yung title kasi for me parang Mema lang yun. IMHO.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's what I thought, too. Once more chance is second chance. It is actually the third chance na.

AFTER n nya makuha yun one more chance n hiningi n jlc dati... besides sino b mag-aakala n masusundan p yun 1st movie aftr 8 years dba?

    3. yung One More Chance na nakuha nila sa first movie after magbreak, is the Second Chance na meron sila sa second movie. hirap ba intindihin?

  23. Liked it, didn't LOVE it. Baka may hangover pa ako sa "One More Chance". I agree with the review but can I add?...for me parang nasobrahan ng hugot lines. Then again, that's just me.

  26. Gusto ko ang ending. It's a married couple's story, so as such, I expected that they will stick with each other in the end. Hindi naman lahat bitter ang married life, kaya you can't really say na hindi sya realistic. And TBH, may times na humuhugot din ako tuwing nagddrama sa buhay kaya it's not oa for me. Bwahaha

    3. This movie is really for married couples na kaya d makarelate yung magjowa pa lang or single pa.
As someone who is already married I can say that their struggles are real. and it is not easy to sustain a happy married life pagtratrabahuhan niyo. Hehe

      Delete
    4. Maybe you aren't married yet/ or tried live-in, kaya di ka makarelate. Its about in good terms or bad terms of their relationship, how they handle problems.

      Delete
Like duh!!!!

  29. Same formula lang ginamit ni Cathy sa A Second Chance and One More Chance. Hugot lines+barkada bonding + conflict between Popoy and Basha. Kasi dun naman sya sumikat eh, so bakit kelangan baguhin?

    1. ang punto ni Topaicio ay "SAYANG" ang "pagkakataon" na gamitin ang kasikastan ng movie para mag come up ng sequel na "remarkable" at "not conventional" Pinoy movie.

in short, ang Star Cinema ay mahina ang loob para mag take risk to take a different route in movie making. stick to tested formula lang sila. just like in tv. same old plot, attack, directing, theme. tried and tested pero walang innovation & growth.

  38. I think a second chance is a realistic movie..I realize why there are people who still stay in the relationship despite the hurting and hardships..and those lines were uttered because it is the really the style of the movie since its a sequence of one more chance. Of course they cannot please everyone. But 90 % would that the movie is great.. since this is a free country..people can say what there opinion is.. but I hope d nya kinwento ying buong story dto.

  43. Married couples who work on the same company and management will appreciate the story. Cguro mtaas lng expectation ng iba kasi the first movie focused on the bf-gf kind of relationship. A second chance is a revelation of how married couples need to work on to their relationship everyday. HIndi na ito kasing babaw ng isang gf-bf nlng because you committed yourselves to each other for the rest of your lives. This movie is an eye opener on how strong you need to be to hold on to each other specially during worst times. Kudos to Bea and John Lloyd as they embraced their characters well on this movie. 51. hindi ko rin nagustuhan ang story. sana yung story is pinakita na lang how they cope up on their "second chances" relationship after they broke-ucp in the first movie hanggang sa happy ending na kinasal sila. more exposure sana sa mga barkada. nakakatuwa sila panoorin mas gusto ko pa yung mga hugot lines nila. giving more light feeling to the story. one more chance fan here.
