Why do you feel sorry for the LGBT community in the Philippines? The Philippines may not be the most forward country when it comes to LGBT rights (i.e. same-sex marriage) but as a gay man who lived there I felt SAFE. I would argue that the Philippines like Thailand is still a free country where LGBTs can live in harmony with the rest of the people. Actually, wrong choice of words siya at chaka kulang sa diplomacy --- but the facts are facts. 1) 100 Million Filipinos, 40% living below the poverty line by world standards as provided by the World Bank and the IMF. Those belonging to that strata continue to have the most children who will live that cycle of poverty. How do you deny people here the choice to use birth control or at least be educated about it? 2) LGBT or not, the laws of any democracy should protect and uplift the right s of ALL citizens --- everyone has the right to pursue happiness. If the law and society deny that to a few, who's to say they can't deny other basic rights as well? The right to worship in whatever religion, the right to make choices about one's own body and wellbeing, the right to vote, the right to free speech,e tc... all of that includes the right to marry the partner of YOUR CHOICE. Now imagine that right being denied you. Not so easy it it? I am touched by the Pope's sincerity and message of love too. He is a great man and a real soldier of Christ. I admire him and pray for him. But I also pray that this church and the re-examination of its old,archaic doctrines. The perrenial message of the New Testament is about love, understanding, empathy and mercy --- its doctrines should then foster inclusiveness, rather than judgment. But at the heart of his message is a protest against the inconsistencies of social injustice with a church still grappling with the modern challenges of living in today's world, searching for authenticity in life.

The Philippines may not be the most forward country when it comes to LGBT rights (i.e. same-sex marriage) but as a gay man who lived there I felt SAFE. I would argue that the Philippines like Thailand is still a free country where LGBTs can live in harmony with the rest of the people. I feel kind of violated in a way when you say that there is nothing Catholic about taking it up the b*tt, because you don't have the slightest clue about other people's faith. DeleteEvery religious sect hate gays. He is just expressing his views on the Church's anti-gay stance. He also makes a valid point of the human time bomb that is the Philippines. Overpopulation, poverty - are the poor really seeing the effect of the "booming" economy? Yes Filipinos have a Catholic majority but laws such us the Reproductive Health Bill should be recognised and seen from a pragmatic position - people have sex without contraception. Sex usually leads to babies or STDs. Most developed countries have separated Church and State. The richer countries who haven't - like the Middle Eastern ones - live a strict and backwards society. If the Philippines want modernity, Church and Governmental decisions needs to be separated.

ReplyDeleteActually, wrong choice of words siya at chaka kulang sa diplomacy --- but the facts are facts. 1) 100 Million Filipinos, 40% living below the poverty line by world standards as provided by the World Bank and the IMF. Those belonging to that strata continue to have the most children who will live that cycle of poverty. How do you deny people here the choice to use birth control or at least be educated about it? 2) LGBT or not, the laws of any democracy should protect and uplift the right s of ALL citizens --- everyone has the right to pursue happiness. If the law and society deny that to a few, who's to say they can't deny other basic rights as well? The right to worship in whatever religion, the right to make choices about one's own body and wellbeing, the right to vote, the right to free speech,e tc... all of that includes the right to marry the partner of YOUR CHOICE. Now imagine that right being denied you. Not so easy it it? I am touched by the Pope's sincerity and message of love too. He is a great man and a real soldier of Christ. I admire him and pray for him. But I also pray that this church and the re-examination of its old,archaic doctrines. The perrenial message of the New Testament is about love, understanding, empathy and mercy --- its doctrines should then foster inclusiveness, rather than judgment. Bryan Boy has a foul mouth and a terrible way of expressing himself. But at the heart of his message is a protest against the inconsistencies of social injustice with a church still grappling with the modern challenges of living in today's world, searching for authenticity in life.
