Letter from a Reader: Beware of MGE Taxi Driver!

Hi Mike!

I just want to send a warning to your many readers.

Today, July 11 at around 4pm, my 10-year old daughter and I boarded this taxi cab in Katipunan, just right outside my daughter's school.

I told the driver to take us to Eastwood. I already sensed his apprehension but he still drove towards Eastwood so I thought it was okay with him.

The traffice was horrible. It was slow moving and we hit a couple of gridlocks. The driver, I noticed, kept on snorting in disgust. I ignored it. Later, he was already whining "haay! ang trapik! lugi tayo nito!" "kala ko ba naghihirap ang pinoy, eh bakit ang daming sasakyan sa kalye?" My daughter and I just looked at each other and did not reply. But when he said, "tanginaaaa! tatanga ng mga drayber!" referring of course to the other moving vehicles around us, I told him "manong, may bata ho kayong pasahero. wag naman kayo magmura." He kept quiet and stopped whining.

When we got to Eastwood, our fare was at around 170. I gave him a whole 200 bucks. He looked at my 200 and said "plus 50 mo na. Trapik eh! Dapat nga di ko na kayo sinakay!" I told him, "Binigyan kita ng 30 na sobra. Ako ang mag dedecide kung dadagdagan kita. Hindi ikaw ang magdedemand. Kahit saan ka pumunta, matrapik talaga." I, then, went down and joined my daughter who was already standing by the sidewalk.

To my surprise, the driver came out of the taxi and started screaming in the middle of the street "Hoy! Bayaran mo ang oras ko! Bayaran mo ko ng tama!" I was so shocked. I called the guard of Eastwood and told him that the driver was harrasing us. The guard shooed him away. The driver kept on screaming the same words and the guard led him to enter his taxi, telling him he was causing traffic. My daughter then told me to enter the mall and leave the taxi driver.

Good thing I was able to take a photo of him and his taxi details when he was ranting on our way to Eastwood. I already had a suspicion he was up to something.

Beware of this driver!

Thank you FP for publishing this.

Very truly yours,
J. Joya

Something drastic really has to be done abt our public transportation system. Take it from singapore. Ang ayos ng systema dito. And cab drivers are honest. Not all of them may be friendly since most of them are really old na, pero at least they are honest. Kahit 10 cents lng change mo ibibigay pa tlg. And if you tell them its ok to keep the change, mag thathank you pa sa yo as if napakalaki ng tip mo. Pinas has great people and great places to go to but i wont recommend my foreigner friends to go to manila without a local dahil sa transportation pa lng delikado na sila. Maimprove lng public transpo natin malaking factor na un to get more tourists sa atin.

    1. Agree ako sayo, we were very impressed ng hubby ko nung pumunta kami dyan. Down to the last cent bibigay talaga sukli mo.

      Delete
    2. Agree ako sayo with this. Wala sa ayos public transport natin.Hindi safe for anyone. Madaming holdaper/snatcher everywhere.

It happened to a bunch of college kids. The kids were so embarrassed and hurriedly paid the driver (probably an additional amount). If it were me, e 'di nag-eskandalo rin ako para makita natin kung sino ang matatakot. Konti lang naman silang ganyan... I know because I've been riding cabs since forever. But still, a lot of them are nice and kind.

  42. I also had a bad encounter w MGE taxi driver. He bumped into the rear of my car. since it was near midnight, we agreed to go to the police station to report incident. Needless to say he didnt show up and turned the storyaround when i called their office. Good thing i have the police report to support my claims. And to get the car fixed, i need to bring papers and car to their ofc in Caloocan. I have to be carless while it's getting fixed. No offer of service was mentioned. I live in alabang, work in makati. They can't even take time to apologize for the inconvenience. So im not surprised w your story. They seem to have hot tempered, reckless and liars as drivers.

I said na sa Ayala na lang kami dumaan para mas mabilis kasi I was late. The driver instead referred to take the Kalayaan route to c5. I was not sure that time if it was better than the Ayala route so i asked him if it was faster if take that way. Sabi nya yes. When we entered global, it was so traffic! Every intersection has traffic lights! I was so late na for work and ended up paying 180php... If we took ayala route, it would have been around 100-120php lang. Kainis

    5. Do you know how much a liter of gas costs?

      Delete
    11. Firstly, a tip is freely given, not demanded. The argument is way out the line. It is given because of GOOD service, not the opposite. Secondly, the traffic burden should not be shouldered by the citizen, but by the government. High prices of gas are determined by corporate decision, not by people who also merely make a living.

    13. Ikaw ba yung taxi driver?

      Delete
    14. Kasama sa factoring ng flag rate at patak ng metro ang traffic at presyo ng gas, if the operators think na nalulugi sila dapat sa concerned govt agency nila yan idulog at hndi ung sa pasahero ipipilit ung additional. Most of cab riders are middle class, and ung binabayad nila sa taxi is galing sa perang pinagtrabahuhan, and hndi naman nadadagdagan magically ang perang kinikita mo dahil matraffic, tama? Tipping is customer's discretion.

  60. Woops! I THINK that's the same driver I reported to MGE last month. Same disgusting behavior. :( But I have to check. I wrote down the body number somewhere in my phone and the photo above looks like a dead ringer. Anyway, even if they were 2 different drivers, then that's even worse. MGE turns out to be breeding this kind of personnel. Such a disgrace. I've always thought this taxi line was a good, safe bet. But then again more things happen behind closed car doors.

  62. Ano ba ang rinreklamo nung driver, all day naman sya nakaupo at may aircon pa.

  65. yes, i agree. this should be forwarded to MGE. laki p nmn ng tiwala ko sa taxi company na yan. but why am i now surprised with this kind of story? BECAUSE METRO MANILA IS INFESTED WITH RUDE and DISHONEST TAXI DRIVERS. walang ginagawa ang ltfrb. isang malaking BS yang hotline nila.

  66. i've also had a horrible experience with MGE. The cab driver was being SUPER friendly, at first i was answering his questions about general topics then it got personal and he started asking for my number, if i have a boyfriend, etc. and said he'll come by everyday and pick me up. AND we were just talking about school okay and how hard it was to get a cab from my school! crazy! i had to go down in another house, 2 streets away from where i live! sobrang creepy pa and was staring at me all the time sa mirror :(

  67. That happened to me sa The Fort. nagagalt na sya pagsakay pa lang namin then nagdadabog sabi ko sa friends ko baba kami na kami then we gave him exact amount tapos bumababa nagsisisigaw na wag daw kami isakay ng mga cab kasi wala daw kaming pera. so bastos! sa inis ko sinagot ko sya. gggrrrr. ibang mga drivers ganyan talaga, akala nila porket babae eh kaya kaya na nila.

  68. I wouldn't say taxi drivers outside of Metro Manila are the best in the country. There will always be taxi drivers who will not behave as expected of them, anywhere, Davao and Baguio cities included. For one, take the proportion of the taxi units and the population they cater to. Manila will not be a metro if not because of its population, thus, the more taxi units there are therein. And it also somehow follows that more of the populace are into social networks such as this site where such and other similar instances can be posted online and there you go - it gets its public and online exposure (like this particular case). Parang ratio and proprotion lang, this also happens elsewhere. But generally speaking, these drivers in the capital are indeed the worse of their kind. By the way, what good is that meter if things like this and other related ones happen? Those meters I believe are meant not only to "measure" the amount the passenger has to pay in no-traffic or less traffic commuting situations but also "measures" the time the unit is hired in traffic commuting situations. Just my butas-na-singkong thoughts on this.
