After 16 Years, Beauty Queen Gets Justice

A Quezon City Court has ruled in favor of Esabella Cabrera, winner of 1997 Mutya ng Pilipinas beauty pageant who got unceremoniously dethroned and stripped of her crown.

Pageant Organizer, Miss Asia Pacific Quest Inc. and former head Leandro Enriquez, Carousel Productions Inc. and former head Ramon Monzon; co-organizer Lorraine Schuck and 1997 Mutya ng Pilipinas 1st runner-up Sheryll Moraga were ordered to pay Php1.1 Million in damages to Cabrera.

Moraga was the one who replaced Cabrera and assumed the beauty title and crown, including all the prizes therein that should have otherwise gone to the latter.

Assisting Judge Maria Rita Bascos Sarabia of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 221 rendered favorable decision on the civil suit filed by Cabrera reiterating that Cabrera's getting dethroned was done without due process.

Cabrera was crowned during the pageant held at Folk Arts Theater on May 3, 1997 and won prizes totalling Php 400,000. She was also crowned as Miss Avon and Miss Lux that gave her P10,000 in prizes each, plus commercial modeling contracts from the said cosmetics and beauty product companies.

It was learned that Cabrera was stripped of the crown after Shuck heard that Cabrera was about to get married to her then boyfriend.

Inspite of being told that what she heard was not true, Shuck allegedly forced her to resign and disown the title because Cabrera was also suspected of being pregnant, and thus she wouldn't be able to accomplish her responsibilities as Mutya ng Pilipinas winner.

  7. Parang kulang naman ang 1.1M payment for damages.. 420k + modeling contracts + lawyer's fees + other damages + interest of all these since 1997.

    1. I read somewhere na isa si Sheryll Moraga sa nagpakalat ng chismis na ikaaksal na si Esabella Cabrera and bustis pa kaya isinama sya sa kakasuhan..

    2. You have to include her because she is an indispensable party. Monzon, Shuck and company installed her right away as the replacement, that is why she has to be included in the lawsuit because she stood to benefit (she actually did) from the prizes and other privileges. The court has to acquire jurisdiction over her so that its processes, writs (if any) and the eventual judgment will bind her.

    1. P400k lang and prize. The legal interest rate was computed kaya P1.1M ang award. including extraordinary benefits.

  13. P 1.1 M for not getting a pregnancy kit and for not confirming the truth behind the marriage rumors before dethroning the title holder. Might I say common sense had become a very rare commodity!

  17. kaya ba lumipat na ng ibang beauty contest si lorraine? did you read the article that implied that ms. earth is rigged and the title can be bought daw? kaso the interview was done in russia so may disclaimer about the translation ng interview with shuck.

(lawyers, judges laging pinopotray ng mga tv shows like Ally mcBeal etc.. na masipag as in working late hours just to finish a case then busy din yung iba like secretaries, assistant as if they are working 24/7 just to finish a case) so masasabi nga ba nating tunay na masipag tayong mga Pilipino? or forever Filipino TIME which means laging late sa lahat? kaya tuloy ng nagsabog ng grasya ay tulog pa tayo? anyways, mabrook! sa beauty queen na eto as nabigyan ng hustisya ang pinaglaban ya.

  19. 1.1 lang?! susme, yung halagang napalunan nya would be more than 1.1 these days.... tapos other damages p... SMH

    1. Actually it was computed. My system yan sa computation of monetary awards.

  20. I am sure there was a deeper reason why she was de-throned at that time. And it is ridiculous that people bought the shallowness of the story. Demanding the 1st runner up to pay damages is absurd too, for at that time..she was only doing her duty as the 1st runner up.

    1. 4:04 are you sure you're not close friends with schuck etal? After everything else, at least Cabrera got her vindication. Imagine fighting for something that no one would believe you for after all these years?? Must've felt really good.

  22. I read about this case during a research on private organization rules vs public interest, and problema din kasi sa kaniya, she did not take a pregnancy test immediately to disprove the very loud rumor. The pageant organizers lost because of the procedure by which she was dethroned. She was not given due process. BUt may shortcoming din si Ateng. Dirty politics is common and rampant in every competition, she also handled it poorly. Perhaps that is why walang moral and exemplary damages. Sa technicality ng dismissal natalo yung defendants.
