Letter from a Reader: Cause for Alarm

Image courtesy of Fashion PULIS reader

Hi FP,

I am an avid follower of your site, kudos for finding the juiciest gossip in town. My apologies in advance for this rant but I can't help myself from sending you my concern.

As I was watching this weekend show,  3 little girls and some other network talents were dancing to Cindy Lauper's song "She Bop." Do they know that the song is kind of touchy due to its sexually suggestive content? Are they aware of the fact that it has something to do with mas**r*ation??? I was awed and very disturbed while watching the whole production number.  Can't the production staff do some due diligence in researching the content/message of the song or any materials they use before subjecting its talents (especially little girls) to use it for a song/dance number?

I am not prude by all means but the fact that there were kids involved made me really cringe and I'm sure that other like-minded viewers felt the same way, too. By writing to you I hope this catches their (the network's) attention and they would be more circumspect next time.

We all know that in media organizations, entertaining and responsible programming is key. As such, these networks should be very vigilant and adhere to the social responsibility they were tasked and vowed to uphold.

Thanks for your time in reading this, FP.

Responsible citizen,
Anna

Pero ang nasa production puro adults na and they should know better. Kung mahalay pala ang song eh bakit mo patutugtugin and note that it's on national tv pa. Marami namang clean catchy songs noh.

    6. No wonder ganito ang estado ng bansa natin. Kasi most of us celebrate ignorance. Kumustahin mo naman ang media natin- to think na isa ito sa pillars of society at ang supposed advocate in the weaving of our moral fibers. The more we subject ourselves with such kind of entertainment, it's like sealing them with our approval. To quote a material that I have read "If we choose coarse, banal, or risque entertainment, our culture will flood the market with one." Nakakalungkot. Let us- being responsible adults- be vigilant.

Tapos sasabihin mo ganito ang estado ng pilipinas kasi "most of us celebrate ignorance".

  4. Saw this prod no. And I think there's nothing wrong with it. It was properly done, hindi malaswa ang sayaw ng mga bata. Ayos naman ang execution. People have different interpretations and hindi mas****ation ang lumabas sa prod na yon. Mas nakaka bother pa nga yung mga bata na kumakanta ng "saving all my love for you" na di hamak na mas maraming beses na napalabas sa TV at kung saan saan na contest pero we know na they do it just to show their vocal capabilities. It's all in your mind dear.

    2. Teh, the song is 'a blatant ode to mas****ation' , as no less than Cyndi Lauper stated in an old interview. There's no room for interpretation dahil masyado na syang literal.

    3. Anon 2:53 and 4:16 may i remind you the clear message of the song "saving all my love for you" kanta ng mga kabitchina! Now tell me sino ang inappropriate sa dalawa?

    4. i had no idea that that song is about mas****ation! and i'm in my 30's! baka naman the prod people didnt know about it. i never heard that "she bop" was controversial, and i dont think that people nowadays really care about the song.

Maraming kantang may iba ring meaning, anuveh. Merong pang-terorista, merong pang-kabitsina, meron pang-luka-luka, merong puro hate, meron pang literal na nagmumura. Tama na 'to, lets move on na. Wala yan, kalimutan na. Lol.

Poor prod staff! Walang research skills!

    7. +1 kina Anon 1:17pm at Anon 2:22pm! I think people are overreacting. Kung hindi naman pala alam ng mga bata (or even the prods) yung totoong meaning nung kanta, anong masama ngayon? At kahit sabihin niyong may subliminal context yun, eh ano ngayon? What's inherently wrong with mas****ation anyway? It's a natural thing to do. What's wrong kung sasayawin nila yun? Walang masama sa seksualidad. Walang masama sa mas****ation. Humans are s***al animals.

4:17 The lyrics themselves are clear that the song is about mas**r*ation. Duh! Hindi sinabi ni Lauper outright noon kasi gusto niyang magka-publicity, only when people started talking about it that she admitted that the song is about mas**r*ation.

  16. Hindi naman straightforward yung lyrics. To most kids, it's just an innocuous song to dance to. My daughter's favorite song is "California Gurls", malay ba nya kung tungkol saan yung popsicle? I can't stop her from liking it, it's being played on mainstream radio. When I was young, we danced to "Ice, Ice Baby" in our school presentation. Malay ba namin it was about drug run. It was just a danceable hit. I'm sure the parents in the 80s didn't mind their kids dancing to She Bop, it's a good rhyme song and Cyndi is wholesome as Andre the Giant. Anna, you may want to cover your children's ears when pop music is played or fill their ipods with TG songs coz most pop songs are filled with sexual and violent innuendos and it ain't gonna change.

    2. Agree! E ako nga 49 years old, now ko lang nalaman, seriously! I didn't care. Kahit nung kasikatan ng kantang yan sinasayaw din ng mga bata sa TV becasue of the beat. I do not know what the motive of this letter sender is, but the lyrics are not explicit so i hope you just shut your mouth. Imagine what the kids will think if they unknowingly dance to the song with hidden meaning.

It's about the loss of a woman's virginity. But that song is regarded a classic. Huwag masyadong uptight. Enjoy life. It's far too short to be concerned with mundane things.

  28. As a mother, I never told my girls what to listen to and what not to listen. I just explained how some songs are not written for them because they were implying things that only adults should do. And pramis, sa murang edad nila, they enjoy music for the beats and sound, not for the messages. Nasa magulang yan how they guide their kids! Ikaw atey na letter sender, maybe you should guide your kids. I'm too afraid they'll rebel against you sooner or later.

Listen to Madonna's I'm Crazy for You: Two by two, their bodies become one.

Don't blame it on the music, game, tv or etc. blame it on the parents' parenting skills.
