Dear Fashion PULIS,
Hello FP! I am a follower of your blog. Apart from the regular blind items, I am also glad that you have this avenue wherein readers can send in and air their gripes about various concerns. I am now writing to you about the malpractices of this particular designer.
In this day and age when the power of technology like the internet gives everyone access to all information imaginable, there are still people who have the guts to make false claims including professionals who represent and/or misrepresent themselves for the purpose of scheming and manipulating people.
Case in point is Questionable Designer QD. On google search and wikipedia, here are some of QD's claims:
"Filipino-American QD is New York-based designer and consultant for global organizations."
1) Filipino American? New York-based? When he only studied for a year in New York. When I attended one of his events, he gave me a business card. I called his New York office, everything was a FAKE, as in no such number. And that 'Designers ----- ' written on his card, I went to the website, found out he just created it -- for "praise release" that is.
"After years of entrepreneurial work in Fashion and Style, QD trained with the Language and Communications ----"
2) He did not train, he was a mere volunteer associate intern. He worked for, NOT trained.
"QD is currently an International Consultant for Branding and Design at the -----"
3) ---- does not need a consultant for branding and design. It gives out money and funds they don't need to promote themselves. We verified this and this position and post title is non-existent. This is not true. HE IS NOT AN INTERNATIONAL CONSULTANT FOR BRANDING AND DESIGN.
"He also heads the Designers for ----- New York, a group of designers from around the world designing for worldwide organizations and development agencies."
4) Again, this is non-existent, just a product of his imagination.
All this while heading **, his design agency in Manila.
5) I checked this out with the BIR - Bureau of Internal Revenue and SEC - Securities and Exchange Commission - this is not a registered entity.
6) Try to inquire about a pair of shoes, he will not be able to show you anything because what he has posted on his website is just that -- samples. Some of them are just in 3d rendering only.
7) His caskets and urns are also non-existent. There maybe be less than four caskets ever made. He had some tv interviews inside a casket factory but he just used these sub-contractors for his own publicity. Not one funeral house ever got interested in his designs.
8) Presently since he is looking for money, he is selling the shoes that are left-overs from his previous "samples." That's why if you ask, he will say "walang size," then he will sell it for Php30,000. Gross!
9) Now he has a tv show on design. He is posting cheap AD DEALS on facebook for his show. OFWs can make "pa-bati" for as low as 40 USD! Lol
10) He initiated this top Filipino exhibit supposedly featuring Lea Salonga, Manny Pacquiao, Charice Pempengco. Then all of a sudden, names like some nobodies surfaced. He included some nobodies so that they will be in his network, since some were also designers. At the event itself, only those nobodies showed up. Lea Salonga and company were clueless.

11) If he is so successful in his design career, why would he always post status on facebook looking for a free ride? "I need a ride from Makati to Katipunan 4pm-ish, anyone?" And does he have friends at all? "Going for a jogging in Ateneo, any companion available?"
On a tour ride somewhere north, he would borrow money to buy small "pasalubongs" but would never pay. Cheap!
Also, when he returned from New York, he said he would only stay here for six months, yet he never left Manila since.
FP, I am sending this as we were a victim of QD's unprofessionalism: a major project that got delayed and eventually scrapped due to his negligence and incompetence.
We hope that this will also help remind people not to be too naive and trusting towards other people they hardly know (something which I was guilty of). Do background check, internet is big help. If in doubt, don't do it. Thank you very much, FP for publishing my letter.

ReplyDeleteTo the writer, sana nagkwento ka na din kung ano exactly ang kasalanan sayo ni QD para naman maintindihan ko kung bakit super effort kang siraan sya. Sorry, dont know the designer personally pero to go through all the hassles na isa-isahing idisprove ang mga claims nya, gaano ba kalaki kasalanan nya sayo?

ReplyDeleteYan din naisip ko. Sayang naman kasi pinapanood ko show nya, with good intention naman sana. Besides, he seems to know what's he's talking about, very spontaneous kasi yung discussion nya with guests. Not only that, mga kilalang designers from overseas din mga guests nya.

DeleteHad a hard time figuring it out since I don't really know a lot of peeps in the fashion industry. The "ten Oreos" and the Basketball Player clues guided me what to google. Reading his "about" in FB, he seems legit to me...but I could be wrong too.

ReplyDeleteThis part I can attest for: I've been to one of his design talks held in one of the Greenbelt Cinemas and everything he said made sense and was relatable especially for designers, artists and other people in the creative field. He is aiming for more forward-thinking collaborations between designers and the government and the business sector which in fact can greatly affect our country's progress. The talk was refreshing and I didn't sense any arrogance from the speaker. In fact, he was game to talk to the guests who approached him afterwards.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I also did some research on him after he handed me one of his cards (this was a couple of years ago), I checked out his site, his background, etc. I couldn't find much info on his products and I thought it's probably because he just got back here in the Philippines and trying to re-establish his presence again (he was very vocal about networking with other designers and creative people at that time). It's hard to conclude that he's a social climber or a wanna-be, but I guess both parties have a valid point. There must be underlying circumstances as to why the sender's project was delayed. Let us not blame it solely on the designer.
Just took a quick peek at the designer's blog and he prefers not to retaliate. Couldn't count that as being unprofessional.
If I were the sender, I would have talked to the designer in person and ask for an explanation and an apology, if necessary, not bash him over the Internet.

ReplyDeletePeople, never use wikipedia as your source. My thesis professor back in college and MA would always return those thesis submitted that has wikipedia as source.
The site is editable ng kahit na sino. So why would you consider wiki as reliable?

Sense niyo na lang yung mga mismong website niya, wag na sa wikipedia (ang reliable talaga nito ah!). Ang nakikita ko lang sa kanya eh, ma-PR si potah. Kaya nga siguro design strategy ang choba niya. More of design/marketing consultant na si bakla ngayon, hindi naman designer per se. Kung nagpasindak ka naman, eh nasa sa 'yo na yon.
Pero ang ironic lang ng letter mo kasi essentially sinisiraan mo siya for making "unsubstantiated claims" about his credentials, pero yung isyu mo sa kanya tungkol sa naudlot na "major project" ay unsubstantiated naman din. Ano ba kasi yon, ilantad mo na lang. Talaga bang may project? May pondo ba? Siya lang ba talaga ang dahilan kung bakit hindi natuloy? Ang lakas naman pala ng powers niya kung ganun!
At kung professional talaga yung isyu mo, bakit hindi mo na lang sa kanya ipinaabot ang concerns mo? Baka naman naayos pa yung problema. At bakit hindi na lang kayo naghanap ng ibang designer para natuloy yung "project" niyo?
Kung maninira ka na rin lang, wag ka nang magkunwaring public service na pambabala sa ibang tao at wag mo nang i-BI na super obviosa naman. Name names para magkalantaran na kayo kaagad 'teh. Genuine complaint naman di ba? O baka naman afraid kang makasuhan ng libel?

DeleteB is not only an incredibly talented designer, whose shoes are still the best Philippine-made products in their category, but is also a decent, honest person who would never stoop malign as the letter's author has. If the author's project was scrapped, chances are it was a worthless endeavor from the onset.

sweetheart you should have given details regarding that alleged botched project by the designer instead of enumerating speculations. so he decided to stay in Manila instead of NY, what's wrong with that? he's selling well-designed quality proudly Pinoy-made shoes worth P30,000, why do you have to describe it as gross? high society people shell out even more for foreign brands. don't you think it's high time that we think of local designs as direct competitors for foreign brands too?

i'm a designer and most of my friends are designers/ architects, our common observation: sometimes it's the clients who are "unprofessional". they think we can work magic, like we're these microwave design machines at their beck and call na kapag hindi nakuha ang gusto nila, we're stamped as unprofessional kaagad. they don't know that designing is a thinking process that incorporates time constraints and budget.
cut this guy some slack. if you've had a problem with him, take it up with him personally. if it's a chronic situation, however, then it might be worth blogging/ warning people about.

ReplyDeletecrab mentality? Because B right now is becoming popular so fellow designers attack him. In one of the hush-hush pep talks- and quiet chika chika, some designers do not want him because he is so ma-epal daw. Probably because he speaks his mind and he outshines them because even though he lacks the products, even though he doesn't have workshop room, nor boutique- he is an instant celebrity. That's the reality in fashion world. Yung iba nga, pinagtatwanan si B behind his back but I am not in the position to tell B about this because friends ko rin naman sila. There may be truth when the hater said he is not NY based, or consultant for ADABA (figure out)- but he is a good person. He can be loud, he can be flirty, he can be sexy. He is NOT perfect- he may have claimed something that aren't true. Pero syempre para sa mga talagang sastre at tunay na designer, isa lang syang nagpapanggap. That's what I always hear

Marami kayang insecure sa kanya- kung balahurain nila si QD grabe, pero pag harap harap na, kala mong magbebestfriend/ amiga amiga. DeleteSa tingin ko, wala namang kukuha kay QD for major project dahil wala naman siyang "concrete" product for sale . ewan ko hindi naman ako designer. Pero wala, parang consultant lang sya. So baka nagpapanggap lang ito na may major project, baka nabwibwisit lang si angie dahil para sa kanya nagpapanggap si QD. Sa totoo lang, marami ngang asar sa kanya, pero hindi sya masyadong binibigyan ng halaga kasi he is never a threat to other designers. Never pa akong nakakita sa runway o sa Famas o kahit sa Metro Manila Film Fest na nagsabi designed by QD. Kahit sapatos? meron ba? yung kay M.A. meron pa ...yung may boutique sa hotel na malapit sa isang airport. Pero si QD, wala naman so paano sya magkakaproject? Pero alam ko mahilig syang makinetwork at magbenta ng sarili nya to the extent OA na, pero nice naman sya. Minsan lang OA, hindi mo alam kung extra friendly o friendly talaga. Alam ko rin, every time may ilalabas syang post sa twitter, or sa blog nya, may mga grapevines na hinihimay himay na ang mga declarations nya. Mas matanda sila kay QD in terms of experience sa industry or mga contemporary lang nya. Pero syempre wala kasing pumalo ng pwet o nakapag bully kay QD o nagsabi na "hija, ang panget ng gawa mo" (anong panget e wala ngang produkto). Atsaka, for what Ive known ang attack sa kanya wala naman syang formal study ng design kahit man lang sa local or sa Milan, so ano ang authority nya to discuss things like design? Ganyan naman sa fashion world, siraan sila ng siraan. Parang pag nagkita kita, sasabihin "have you seen his works?etc..yadah yadah. It sucks". Parang hindi pa nasanay si QD sa ganyan kaya parang affected sya. Probably the reason why he is NOT used to these kinds of attacks is because he is NOT really a fashion designer. he has no products- so he hasn't tasted the competition among designers. He doesn't feel any animosity na macompare ang work nya. But, he maybe design consultant. To QD, mejo affected ka. Chill lang. Ganyan sa fashion world, maraming magagaling or naggagaling galingan. ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't think of "Angie" as professional or genuine. This was concocted out of spite and not as a warning to other people. Too much gossip, not enough facts - everything coloured by a sense to malign. And please, there's nothing wrong with social climbing if it means rising above a section of muck-raking society that thrives on damaging rumours. If he leaves you grovelling in the mud, then good for him. As I see it, this designer is trying to elevate design (both conceptually and practically) on a national level. Hopefully this sense of good design will filter down to the groundlings. We'll all be the better for it.

sadly, marami talaga syang silent haters who are doing some puzzle to tibag him! following secretly to his account/ asking their galamay to friend him. He is very nice naman pero dami nya talagang silent hater, mga pasyonista din. Minsan sya ang hot topic nila ********** . OMG, kapag ginaya nila yung tigas ng mukha tapos yung last time toxic sila talaga sa pambabalahura kasi ginamit pa yung signature style nya na "twalya" raw sa leeeg. Pano kasi biglang sikat eh wala naman daw product.sabi nila.-baka for consultancy okay naman. Bait naman si ateh e. Sweet pa. ReplyDeletei had known the QD few years now, i had bought 2 pairs of shoes that he made, both were custom made and i was entertained well, the first shoe didnt fit well because i had given a wrong shoe size, he repaired it and send back to me, the second shoe fits perfectly it was used on our wedding.
ReplyDeleteHis design is something to be proud of, it beyond any foreign brand and the quality is really good, been wearing my shoes for 4 years now and it still look new.
craftmanship and quality and design wise i can vouch on his shoes.
I bought one of his shoes many many years back and I'm really impressed with the quality. Well, I don't know if he made it big in NY but he is a good designer based from my experience.
