Letter from a Reader: Shocking Behavior of Filipino Caretakers

Video courtesy of BBC News

Dear Fashion PULIS,

How are you? I am from UK and I work as a care assistant. Just last night my husband and I were watching a program in BBC, a documentary about an elderly being abused in a nursing home, and we were so mortified to know that the caretakers involved are filipinos. I know that we shouldn't be ashamed of our own fellowmen, but what this certain Jonathan Aquino did was so humiliating especially to the Filipinos around the world. I hope u can feature this in your blog as it will serve as eyeopener for people working abroad, to remind us that we are not only carrying our reputation but our country's as well. Thank you.

Yours truly,
Ellenaj

  2. really shameful! It only takes one act to tarnish our reputation. Hope they won't suffer the backlash.

  4. Shocking and very disappointing... Filipinos are well known for their excellent service when it comes to health care. Foreigners would even request for a Filipino to take care of them because Filipinos are very clean and they make sure that patients are clean as well and that patients are well taken cared of. What Jonathan did is horrifying. He was caught red handed. No excuse at all. The question is why on earth did he do that? I hope that he would be the last Filipino to do that. And let this video be an eyeopener to all OFW's around the world.

  5. medyo natakot ako. my sister works in UK as a caregiver, she does the same, she takes care of old people. baka dahil dito, maapektuhan ang job nya, sya pa naman yung breadwinner ng family. :\

    1. Instead of being concerned about the welfare of your sister, you are more troubled because she is the breadwinner of your family. I just cant fully comprehend some people who send their children to school so the children can suppport the family when they graduate. This kind pf mentality that some prople have, appalls me.

    2. Very sad, right? But that's what happening nowadays. Poverty is blamed for this but I hope this will not happen forever.

    1. over ka teh....if that deserves a death sentence paano na yung muderers, rapists, corrupt politicos, etc. While what that caretaker dis was very, very wrong perhaps its a manifestation of what this system does to a person. Some of them are forced to work as caregivers because they have to support their families and wala namang makuhang trabaho dito. POEA should provide more counselling services.

    3. Death sentence agad? hahahahaha.

Investigation ang proper protocol, we shouldn't judge based on one clip alone. Oo nakakahiya for all the Filipinos pero if you are confident na tama ang ginagawa mo you shouldnt be scared. If they fire you based on this, purely discrimination yun and that case can be filed sa court.

  12. Hi FP and all.. It was indeed Sad about this news, I couldnt even believed my Hubby when he told me about this.I have been working here in London for 11 yrs as a Senior Nurse and I have never seen a humiliating things like this. Most of the patients love Filipino service and care.

Thanks!

  15. This is not the whole footage, mas nkakahiya ang ginawa nung guy sa matanda, nde lng pinakita dito sa video pero sinampal pa nya ng malakas ung kaawa-awang lola ng walang kalaban laban, nkakaawa nman.

  17. I really hate people generalizing nonsense. There are people who do violent things NOT BECAUSE they are Filipino but because they are who they are. Ang hirap kasi when some Filipino did something good or bad somewhere outside the country feeling naan ng iba, sikat o bagsak na ang Philippines.

    1. Kasi po pag nasa ibang bansa, una kang marerecognize because of your nationality before anything else. Agad agad marerecognize ba ang personality mo?

  18. This case is somewhat similar to a filipino nurse' s case in scotland way back 2005 or 2006? It also involved the care of elderly people. He was also sentenced to 18 months and repatriated back to pinas. It only takes one bad apple......

But they don't have the right personality for it as shown by the video. Hindi lang naman sa UK to, pati sa US madami ganito and nakakaawa ung mga alaga nila. If they are not content with their jobs or they can't be proud of it, eh di umalis sila. Kung pinasok nila, gawin nila ng maayos. No ifs or buts. I hope the letter sender does her part too by reminding her co-caregivers if she sees them doing something wrong.

  21. Embarrassing! My sis is also working in Uk maganda ang reputation nila sa home.

  22. this is not about nationality. this is the character of the person that is the issue! nagkataon lang ng filipino.

    ReplyDelete
  24. This is isolated case. Generally, Filipinos are most-sought-after caregivers and nurses in the world!

  26. I work here in the UK, been here 11 years, our job in the NHS is very challenging, I struggled at first with all the adjustments and coping that you needed to do to survive. What Mr. Jonathan Aquino did is HORRIBLE, shameful to the caring industry full stop regardless of him being a pinoy. We encounter cases of vulnerable adults from different care homes and we needed to raise issues by reporting it to the appropriate department. It is not easy to look after a dementia patient but we are being given the appropriate training on how to deal with them. I hope this will serve as an eye opener to everybody who works in the caring industry. If you think you can not handle them, find another job. Thanks for posting FP.

  28. Kung tayo na mga pinoy na regular people ay affected dito, i wonder what the president feels about this? Filipino and someone who has the same last name as his. That would make me feel really awkward if I were the president. Pero ako lang yun, i'm pretty sure iba naman sya. peace to all. di po ako nakikipag-away, naisip ko lang. :)

    1. The British people have a different culture from us pinoys, it may sound harsh but sending their oldies to care homes/ nursing homes is the norm here in the UK, love is out of the equation here, the care homes/ nursing homes here in the UK are monitored by governing bodies like the CQC ( care quality commission ) this care homes are being monitored regularly to make sure that it is giving a high quality of care to its residents. Like my previous comment anonymous 04:56 - what Mr. Jonathan Aquino did is just horrifying, his actions are unjustifiable, he is a disgrace to the CARING industry, regardless of him being a Filipino.

  30. Sobrang nakakaawa tlga yung matanda. Tama! At least may lesson learned....sana hnd n po maulit to.

I agree with you that Filipino nurses and caregivers are sought after. But in only takes one.... anyway in time, makakalimutan din. sometime 2006 or 2007, a Filipino nurse who worked for a retirement home in Edinburgh was also convicted due to charges of abuse that he allegedly committed. Pity that there was no hidden camera to prove IF he really did it. Maybe he wasn't guilty.
