On new year's eve, Colombians observed their tradition of burning effigies to ward off bad luck for the year, but with a twist: the faces on some of the effigies included Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach and US comedian Steve Harvey, the 2015 Miss Universe coronation night host.
A video of the effigy-burning activity was posted on Facebook on Friday, January 1, by user Noider Almanza Barraza, and has since gone viral. In it, effigies of Pia and Steve are being burned.
Noider turns the camera around after a while, and smiles, waves, and cheers. Other cheers and festive music is heard in the background as well.
The video was reposted on the Senyora Santibanez Facebook page on Saturday, January 2. Many Filipino social media users called out Noider and Colombians on being "bitter" about their bet's loss at the Miss Universe pageant.
The burning of effigies, called año viejo (old year), is a New Year's Eve tradition in Latin American countries, where it is believed that the act wards off bad luck in the coming year. The effigies are burned at the stroke of midnight too.
Other Latin American social media users who observe the tradition have posted photos of their effigies of Pia and Steve too.
On December 20, Pia won the Miss Universe title in Las Vegas, after host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced Colombia's Ariadna Gutierrez as the winner. Steve apologized for his mistake after.
Ariadna has since spoken up about the incident on Colombia’s W Radio, saying that the experience humbled her and the rest of the Latin community present at the pageant.

Sacrificing A Future for Love

The Alleged Ex-Lover (AL) of a Hunk Talent (HT) did not realize that he would go through much sacrifice to prove his love for HT. While HT has slowly built his career, he allegedly had a relationship with AL even if he also had a girlfriend. The arrangement was fine with AL and he continued to shower HT with his needs and wants. Sometimes, HT would even be seen with the family of AL and all seemed to be going well.
However, unless love were indeed true and not based on what material wealth one can give, then a relationship is doomed to fail. When the finances started to drop and AL had no other means to sustain the material lifestyle he has given to HT, the poor lover resorted to illegal means. AL started stealing just to provide for HT. Driven by his blind love for HT, AL broke the law and was caught. Consequently, AL landed in jail.
When HT found out what happened to AL, he broke off his alleged relationship with AL and was never seen again. Nothing was heard from HT again, as AL continued to languish in jail. Meanwhile, the family of AL was so upset that they kept prodding AL to tell his story to media and reveal the “user” side of the actor. However, AL refused to budge and justified his silence with his love for HT. AL was being convinced to spill the beans to serve as a warning to possible people HT might use for his needs.
Even if AL were to reveal his story, he might simply be dismissed and ignored by media. The present lover of HT is too much in love with the actor to believe that HT could be capable of such behavior. HT and his present lover (PL) seem to be an unlikely couple, and kibitzers have commented that HT is such a prized catch for the woman. Of course, the cynics believe that something else might be involved in their relationship. Because of love, HT and PL are having the time of their lives, while AL is still serving his time.

Classy, Glossy But Lacking In Depth

This is the intriguing (and quite promising) premise of “Nilalang,” and director Pedring Lopez strives and strives mightily to deliver thereon.
The opening credits with its accompanying montage is a work of art in itself, giving viewers a capsule summary of the bizarre underbelly of Japan’s kinbaku (or bondage) subculture, which unfortunately, will be totally lost on those not previously conversant with it. The film also starts with a bang: an atmospheric, stylized and convincing fight sequence set in ancient Japan involving two samurai warriors against their demon-possessed brother. It is evident that the filmmakers made great effort to painstakingly choreograph the fight scenes; this careful choreography and attention to detail can be seen throughout the film.
Cut to 2013 Manila. Tony Cuevas (Cesar Montano) leads an elite squad of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in a raid to apprehend a Japanese serial killer who makes a disturbing habit of tying up women in typical Japanese bondage styles and carving them up. After catching the killer in flagrante with a victim in rope suspension, the killer resists and is killed. Case closed, so Cuevas and the NBI think.
Fast forward to the present. Killings with the same pattern begin to recur. The NBI is puzzled: is it a case of copycat killings, or some sort of religious ritual perpetrated by a different man. As they face one blank wall after another, an NBI agent (played by Cholo Barretto) begins to seriously think that something about the case belongs to the realm of the paranormal; Cuevas scoffs at him. But after a killing hits close to home, and after witnessing other inexplicable incidents, Cuevas in desperation turns to Miyuki (Maria Ozawa), a Japanese lady who owns a bondage club, for answers. As it turns out, Miyuki is the daughter of the keeper of the secrets of the ancient evil and Cuevas’ on-again-off-again lover. He learns of the antique book, the treacherous character of the evil spirit (who can possess those whom you trust and make them turn against you). When the demon claims Mizuki’s father and sister (Yam Concepcion) as its latest fatalities, Mizuki joins Cuevas and his NBI buddy Jane (Meg Imperial) in battling the malignant spirit and exact vengeance. But with the demon able to inhabit anyone, even those close to them, trusting one another becomes problematic. And will Cuevas be able to make the ultimate sacrifice to once and for all annihilate the evil that has transcended centuries?
“Nilalang” does not deserve its cellar-dwelling rating in the 2015 MMFF. It is very well-made, with atmospheric light-and-shadows photography giving the film the sense of dread that it needs as a supernatural thriller. The photography is nothing short of gorgeous, with the cinematographer showing Manila with an ethereal beauty that escapes those living in it. The action sequences are briskly-paced and tightly-edited, giving it a feeling of speed that engages the viewer. Ozawa acquits herself very well in her own fight scenes, and it is evident that she has prepared herself for the role by training in either kendo or jujitsu, judging from her moves. The shoot-them-ups are very well-staged, and the special effects – including the prostheses – are spectacular. Such is the attention to detail that, reading the closing credits, I was amazed to know that the producers even hired a rope bondage consultant just so the ropework and knots on the victims are authentically Japanese shibari. Over-all, as an action film, “Nilalang” would compare favorably with modern Hongkong or Chinese films, and would not embarrass itself even if shown internationally.
The most glaring shortcomings, however, come in the form of narrative and characterization. While as I have said, the premise is promising, and the film starts with a bang, a consistent story arc was not sustained, and in the end, the storytelling becomes vaguely-defined and scattered. The characters are also wanting in depth. Cuevas is portrayed as the quintessential movie hero – strong, intelligent, invincible in firearm and hand-to-hand combat, and sexually desirable – but the attempt to give him a back story to explain his own “demons” and what motivates him, falls flat. Imperial as Cuevas’ “sidekick” is shown to be carrying a torch for him, but aside from that, there is not much dimension to her role.
A sore thumb is Ozawa, eye candy to the max, but showing a total lack of acting ability. Even with lowered expectations – knowing her to be new to mainstream films – one will be disappointed. I’m talking about Sofia Coppola levels in “Godfather III.” And Aubrey Miles, in a short role as Cuevas’ estranged fiancée with whom he is trying to make amends, acts as if she were recuperating from dengue. The two lovely ladies prominently marred what would otherwise have been a highly competent movie.
Cesar Montano is his usual proficient self, displaying his acting chops in the few opportunities for doing so. But let’s face it: his role was not written to garner acting awards, and Buboy had very little to work with. That he was able to pull off his role with a certain degree of aplomb is an achievement in itself. The rest of the cast did justice to their roles, and complemented the protagonists well.
So, would I recommend “Nilalang”? Well, if you’re looking for impressive, well-directed and enjoyable local slambang action for the holidays, look no further. If you resolve to just enjoy yourself and not attempt to over-analyze it, “Nilalang” is a classy, glossy and – with the proper frame of mind -- ultimately pleasurable alternative to the dramatic and romantic festival offerings.

The Reason Why She Would Not Let Him Go

Despite the simplicity of such principles, young talents make it big, remain as support, or quit. When Artistically Feeling (AF) Talent entered showbiz, she was among the young recruits of a major station. AF showed potential, as she could sing, dance, and host competently. Thus, early in her career, she was given various hosting jobs and even acting assignments. For a time, her name had recall and she seemed to be on her way to becoming famous. Then, she disappeared for reasons that could only be speculated on.
When AF resurfaced, most were shocked at her 180-degree turn. From an innocent and wholesome image, she opted to join the usual path of female talents, which was to transition towards a sexy image. With her decision, most were disappointed as there seemed to be no need for her to become daring. Apparently, her camp felt that she would have a better chance at achieving fame by going sexy. Thus, for this image, she gave up her wholesome and talented image.
Over the years, nothing happened to her career, as the public became tired of her frequent reinventions in her career. Soon, the networks started to pay more attention to their newer talents, which let AF in the cold. Worse, her tenacious drive in her career slowed down when she met Her Boyfriend (HB).
HB could be considered as another talent who was taking advantage of his status in the country. Although, he started modeling, the diversity of his ventures honed his talent and now, he can be seen in acting projects, which seemed farfetched a few years ago. AF and HB did not bother to hide their relationship, as their status became noticeable in social media.
While everyone was happy at their finding each other, some wondered the secret of their togetherness. Fans wondered what was it in HB that AF could not let go and vice versa. Speculations have it that alleged physical intimacy was a reason. HB is quite gifted in all aspects, which was his advantage and which is why AF would rather focus on him than reinvent herself again. Even if her career might be considered stagnant, roles do come for her. However, she could only do so much because she has to accept reality that age has caught up with her and fans have changed as well.

Chart-topping R&B singer Natalie Cole, who followed her legendary father into the music business with hits like “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” and “Unforgettable,” died at age 65.
“Natalie Cole, sister beloved & of substance and sound. May her soul rest in peace,” tweeted the Rev. Jesse Jackson on New Year’s Day.
Cole, who had struggled with a variety of health issues in recent years, died Thursday night, according to publicist Maureen O’Connor. The cause of death was reportedly congestive heart failure.
A physically weakened Cole, winner of nine Grammy Awards, was forced to cancel a string of concert performances over the last three months after a recurrence of hepatitis C linked to her earlier drug abuse.
The daughter of music icon Nat (King) Cole scored a huge 1991 hit with “Unforgettable” — a virtual duet with her late father. Natalie was just 15 when her father died in 1965, a decade before his daughter launched her own solo recording career.
The album “Unforgettable ... With Love” spent five weeks at No. 1 on the pop charts, sold more than 14 million copies worldwide and won six Grammy Awards.
But her career exploded with her 1975 debut album that included the massive hit single “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” and a pair of Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Performance.
Cole initially struggled with success, battling a devastating cocaine addiction until her manager sent her “kicking and screaming” to drug rehab in 1983, the singer recalled.
She had previously experimented with drugs like LSD and heroin, but it was cocaine that sent her into a spiral as her career and marriage faltered. A first trip to rehab failed, but the second one took — and she remained sober for the remainder of her life.

Her career was soon back on track with her hit cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac,” along with the singles “Jump Start My Heart” and “I Live for Your Love.”
Cole, who received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, wrote a pair of memoirs and starred in a 2001 made-for-TV movie “Livin’ For Love: The Natalie Cole Story.”
In 2009, she received a kidney from an anonymous donor after hepatitis C forced her into dialysis. Cole became a spokesperson for the University Kidney Research Organization, a group dedicated to eradicating kidney disease.
She appeared in June 2014 at the Apollo Theater’s 80th birthday celebration.
