Like or Dislike: Michael Kors for Metro Society
We open with a name that is almost synonymous to American luxury sportswear. Michael Kors is not just one of the most talented designers of our generation, he is also a master of relaxed elegance and has a business sense that has brought his little shop of self-made garments to a multimillion dollar brand. With flagship stores worldwide that sell not just his garments but his in demand handbag, shoe and accessory lines and a second brand, Michael by Michael Kors, he is definitely on top of the (fashion) world. Michael gives Metro Society an exclusive look into his history, shares with us his insights on the industry and passions and shows us that even with all he has accomplished, there is still much to look forward to for the future.
This being our 10th year in the local publishing industry, we wanted to glorify the creative minds who have contributed immensely to the rise of Philippine fashion. These designers are the cream of the crop and are looked up to, admired and emulated by many that follow in their path. Known in the industry and the ‘senior’ designers, they each have left an irreplaceable mark on local fashion. Together with them, we feature their muses, women from all age brackets and different sectors of society that they feel embody the ideal. For Metro Society, these designers definitely make up the top ten: Inno Sotto with Bea Valdez, Rhett Eala with Kitkat Rivilla, Randy Ortiz with Lucy Torres Gomez, Rajo Laurel with sisters Venise and Gela, Lulu Tan Gan with daughter Jessica, Cary Santiago with Johanna Lhullier, Dennis Lustico with Ria Prieto, JC Buendia with keri Zamora, New Yorker with Bea Tantoco and pepito Albert with Kaye Tinga.
Asides from wonderful fashion spreads, this issue also goes behind the scenes when it comes to producing garments. We take you into the houses of Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior to witness the intricacies that go into each design. We also have a special on Oscar De La Renta who was dubbed as the ‘Great American Designer’ and bring you to the Met punk style installation.

Chasing “Rihanna” around Manila with Smart Music
Hundreds of Rihanna fans all over Metro Manila raced against each other and chased their “idol” to grab a couple of limited premium tickets to Rihanna’s Diamonds World Tour held last September 19 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Mobile leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), through its largest online music store Smart Music opened the Rihanna Twitter Zoom contest days before the popstar’s Manila concert, encouraging fans to score free tickets by participating in an interactive online game.
Twitter Zoom is an online hunt where Smart subscribers got the chance to win premium Rihanna concert tickets just by registering at Smart Music, following @SMARTCares and @SMARTPromos on Twitter and tweeting the hashtag, #SmartMusicRihanna. For every 500 hastags, the online map zoomed in, leading to the locations of the concert tickets given by a Rihanna look-alike.
Fans and onlookers alike were surprised to see contest participants making a mad dash to the Rihanna look-alike awaiting the Smart Twitter follower who can give her the correct password in exchange of concert tickets.
Smart’s hit Twitter contest also gave away tickets during Black Eyed Peas and Katy Perry’s Manila concert tours.
“When we introduced Smart Music, we promised to provide our subscribers not just the most affordable music tracks but the total music experience. From downloads, to exciting fan events and access to the biggest concerts, Smart Music is the all-in-one portal for the true blue music lover,” said Mellissa Limcaoco, head of Smart’s Innovation and Product Development group.
Lucky chance
The Rihanna Twitter Zoom promo excited many fans of the singers who wanted to experience her concert for free. Netizens flooded Twitter with the #SmartMusicRihanna hashtag, eager to join the unique contest that’s frar from the ordinary Twitter promo.
“Idek but @SMARTPromos got the coolest, craziest and out-of-this-world promo strategies! applause to the team,” said Twitter user @jiiensam.
Other Twitter users applied equally unique strategies to make sure they get the much coveted tickets.
“Nung gabi pa lang, nagbabantay na ko ng Twitter,” said John Paulo Baticulon, winner of the first leg of Twitter Zoom at SM Fairview. “So yung ate ko yung naiwan sa bahay para magbantay ng tweets tapos ako yung tumakbo all the way here. Gusto ko talagang mapanood si Rihanna up close. Parang soundtrack na kasi ng buhay ko yung mga songs niya. So thank you, Smart, for giving this gift to me.”
Along with Baticulon, the other two lucky winners of premium Rihanna concert tickets were Jay Mark Isais who went all the way from a class in the University of Santo Tomas to SM Megamall; and Julius Provido, who braved the night’s rain to finish the last leg at the SM Mall of Asia, coming all the way from his work at Quezon City.
“Nung sinabi na clue ay ‘heart of Manila,’ kumuha na agad ako ng taxi papuntang Megamall, kahit traffic. Then I was using my Smart LTE for monitoring the tweets” Isais said. “Nung nalaman kong may ganitong Twitter Zoom, hindi ko na siya pinalampas. Sobrang idol ko kasi talaga si Rihanna. Her songs really inspire me more.”
Rihanna fans can also download her music for as low as P10 using their prepaid load or charged to their postpaid bill at smart.com.ph/music, along with over three million other songs from the Smart Music catalog.
Smart Music is a co-presentor of Rihanna’s Diamonds World Tour in Manila.

Distance was not an issue for John Paulo Baticulon, the winner of the first leg of the Smart Twitter Zoom. At 6 AM, he already left Las Piñas and went all the way to SM Fairview. His sister was the one monitoring the tweets while he was going to the location.

A Veritable Close-fisted

After several years, SA has been successful in her showbiz comeback. To this day, she is financially blessed with a career thriving like she and FB never imagined. However, despite of all this and a sweet public image, SA is reportedly not that sweet at home.
Some people privy to her and the family reported how she fired a Maid MD on the grounds of stealing some items from the pantry. SA even mentioned this publicly and justified herself. But insiders say that SA and FB are not what they are pictured to be as ideal. They attest how selfish the couple is amid all their countless material blessings. MD can not even begin to think how SA and FB can find it in their hearts to be selfish ,not sharing even a small portion of those overflowing items in their storage.
Reportedly, even if maids hint at desiring one or two items from the mounting stuff, the couple would also hint at disapproval. But an insider said that the MD in question was a hard worker in the house, but her low salary could hardly support her and her family, that’s why she was allegedly tempted to "steal."
It was said that SA and FB have more than enough of everything - " bursting at the seams, " so to speak, yet don’t even give a damn to people working for them. Obviously, paying it forward is not in the couple's vocabulary.

Just Another Secret Relationship

However, their relationship might be making some people uncomfortable. LP and AW have been seen doing PDA in the newsroom. AW would sometimes kiss LP, and they would even have tender moments with each other, like feeding each other or someone’s hand on the other’s outfit.
Unfortunately, LP and AW cannot bring out their relationship in the open or even make a public declaration of what they have. Besides the fact that their positions require high credibility and a spotless record, they have to have a clean image in the eyes of the public. Moreover, our society has yet to accept same-sex relationships. Yes, LP and AW are female, but neither shows the stereotype look of a lesbian, which might make it hard to detect unless one has a pretty strong gaydar or has witnessed their daily lives.
Is this the major reason why AW will not leave her network despite offers from alleged other networks? It seems that both are doing their jobs competently, and their relationship is not interfering with their roles in the network. Since LP and AW are not in entertainment, their relationship remains inconspicuous.

Can’t Get Over Affably

That is why we often see a number of CA’s walking the red carpet at a premiere night to give their backing and support to a fellow CA’s movie and to their Network NW as well. More often than not, these movies are also produced or co-produced by NW.
CA1 is a cold-hearted actress who has had an unpleasant falling out with a playful actor CA2. Their once ideal friendship was so tarnished that to this day, CA1 can’t seem to let go of her ill feelings. Outwardly, she may look okay, but when the topic shifts to CA2, she can’t hide and becomes very transparent.
CA1 was recently interviewed at a weekly show. At the conclusion of the interview, she was casually asked if she was going to watch CA2’s movie that was about to be shown that time. CA1 replied in the negative saying that she is not into gruesome movies - but hinted at watching a hit movie that was similar to CA2’s. CA1 even proudly posted her photos after she watched the said movie.
Unfortunately, two NW Bosses NB happened to watch CA1’s interview and were so aghast at her impulsive tactlessness believing that such a statement was tantamount to telling the viewers not to watch CA2’s NW-produced movie - for the most absurd and foolish reason at that.
NB immediately called for CA1’s handlers and castigated them for having even allowed that interview to air. NB said that the interview only bolstered what CA1 has been persistently accused of all along - that she still can’t get over CA2. Apparently, CA1’s lack of maturity keeps on backfiring at her.

Jinggoy Estrada: I Don't Know 'Sexy'

Estrada, in an interview on radio dzMM, said he used to be obese but slimmed down after undergoing bariatric surgery to curb his appetite.
"Inaamin ko naman na dati akong mataba at pumayat eh dahil nagpaopera ako para pumayat dahil shobang-shoba na ako noong araw," he said.
Estrada admitted this first on "Bandila" during the 2010 election campaign period .
"The truth is I had this bariatric surgery because I had an uncontrollable appetite. I ate all the kinds of food served on the table," the son of former President Joseph Estrada said.
The younger Estrada, however, insisted that he is not the senator "Sexy" alluded to by whistleblower Benhur Luy during the hearing on the pork barrel scam in the Senate on Thursday.
"Hindi ko alam kung sino ang tinutukoy nilang 'Sexy'. Hindi ko po kilala kahit sinong whistleblower," he said.

"Curious lang ako. Sabi mo yung sexy lalaki, paano nangyari yun? Mahilig sa [sexy?]"
"Kasi po nung una po kasi ano siya, mataba daw tapos biglang pumayat kaya sexy na ang tawag namin," Luy answered.
Estrada, meanwhile, told dzMM he does not know Luy.
"Kindi ko kilala si Benhur at hindi ko nakikita si Benhur sa aking tanggapan," he said. "Hindi ko po nakakausap si Benhur Luy."
He also denied getting money from Napoles.
"Sa pagkakaalam ko, hindi kami tumanggap ng pera mula kay Janet Napoles," he said. "Wala po akong natatanggap."
'WHY ONLY JPE, BONG AND ME?'
Estrada also lashed out at the Commission on Audit for allegedly targeting him, former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, and Senator Bong Revilla Jr.
"Ako'y nababahala sa COA audit. Kaming 3 nababanggit, Si Senator Enrile, Senator Revilla at ako," he said.
"Ang nais ko lamang tanungin ang COA, bakit kaming tatlo, malawak na ang pag-aaudit pero ibang kasama kong senador, iyung bang congressman, halos 10%-20% lang nao-audit," Estrada said.
"Tatlo lang naman kaming pinupuntirya. Araw-araw na lang na sa front page ng diyaryo," he added.
"Parang lumalabas na magnanakaw na kaming lahat," he said, adding that he has been careful to protect his name.
"Pinangalagaan ko ang pangalan ko," Estrada said.

And what’s more, this beautiful Caribbean island just happens to be one of the world’s top vacation spots too. Famous for its beaches and rum-based cocktails, Havana could be the perfect spot for a steamy holiday romance. Our apologies to the American ladies who will have to give this island a miss, but at least there’s always Puerto Rico.
