Kevin Kwan, author of the book underlying hit film “Crazy Rich Asians,” faces up to three years in jail in his native Singapore. He is accused of avoiding the country’s compulsory military service.
The film had its Singapore premiere Tuesday night, ahead of a Wednesday theatrical release. But Kwan was not among the cast or crew attending the soiree.
Singapore’s ministry of defense issued a statement on Wednesday saying Kwan had avoided national service, stayed away from the country without the required permission, and had been turned down in his attempt to renounce his Singaporean citizenship in 1994. Kwan has lived in the U.S. since about 1990.
All Singapore men are required to serve two years of national service in the army, police or civil defense after the age of 18. If convicted of draft-dodging, Kwan faces a three-year prison sentence and a fine up to $7,300 (S$10,000).
The film, directed by Jon M. Chu and starring an all-Asian cast, was released by Warner Bros. in North America last week. There it earned $34 million in its opening five days.
It has been hailed in Hollywood as a breakthrough for racial diversity. The cast is headed by Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding and Ken Jeong.

The Singaporean defense ministry statement reads in full: “Mr Kevin Kwan failed to register for National Service (NS) in 1990, despite notices and letters sent to his overseas address. He also stayed overseas without a valid exit permit. Mr Kwan is therefore wanted for defaulting on his NS obligations. In 1994, his application and subsequent appeal to renounce his Singapore citizenship without serving NS were rejected. Mr Kwan has committed offences under the Enlistment Act, and is liable to a fine of up to $10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 3 years upon conviction.

Whenever an actor and an actress are doing a project, the publicity would be that the two are already falling for each other and even to the point of having a relationship. Such gimmick gets the attention of the audience and is made as a point of interest for more viewers to watch. After some time, fans are organized for solid support. Often, these fans can be rabid towards comments that seem to be unfavorable for the reel pair.
The drawback of such strategy is that the reel couple are expected to stick together and individually lose their identity. Fans would express anger when the loveteam is broken apart of if new partners are introduced. Thus, the reel couple are stuck to roles that their partnership allows and that is basically just about love and relationships. A high percentage goes to the lack of opportunities to test the depth of the acting range because fans will not buy anything but a feel good lovestory. Consequently, if one reel partner decides to move away, expect fans to go ballistic and harass that personality.
Thus, when a network seems to be pushing the loveteam between Talented Celebrity (TC) and Pretty Lady (PL), not everyone seems to be happy. Although TC and PL have a well-received project, the camp of TC is concerned over the limitations once the TC-PL love angle is pushed by the network. Although TC has shown signs that he can make it on his own, PL was needed to spice up both of their careers.
When An Associate (AA) of TC had to give an interview, AA was shocked that the fans did not at all fully respect her and her attention was called because she allegedly did not express gratitude for PL’s presence in the project with TC. Well, PL has yet to earn the trust and confidence of AA, which would ensure that she gets recognition. By contrast, AA had an opposite reaction when word got out that TC was going to be paired with a Network Talent (NT). NT has done several projects with many actors in the industry and has received recognition for her craft. Naturally, AA reacted positively, as she considers NT an acting match for TC.

The true test of a celebrity’s character is his/her behavior behind the cameras. Actions that are done in private reveal how much sincere a person is. Thus, certain celebrities would have a double-burden in case their image are opposite of their character. The way celebrities treat their house staff gives a clear picture of who they really are.
Sometime ago, Noted Celebrity (NC) hired the services of a Household Helper (HH). With today’s demand for helpers, lucky are people who could find competent individuals who can run their homes smoothly. HH was happy to have work and moreover, she was working for NC. NC has made a name for herself given that her services were often in demand. Besides, NC is smart enough to maximize her connections to obtain what she wants. Thus, working under NC seemed to be ideal for HH.
Unfortunately, such was not the case, as HH quit after working for NC for a short period. NC projects a sweet image in public. Although she would occasionally be called for certain unacceptable behavior as perceived by netizens, NC’s camp would make sure she has more positive publicity than negative ones. This set-up was to benefit her reputation and assure her that she would get jobs.
So, HH quit because of NC’s alleged crass way of treating her house staff. NC is mean toward her home companions and being such could lead to constant reprimands and tense situations. The treatment became constant until the point that HH could not stand NC anymore. NC was just too cruel in certain instances, which might lead to bad karma later, as HH thought.
