As Expected, Nothing Came Out of Their Assistance

Some years ago, Seasoned Performer (SP) was persuaded to undergo cosmetic surgery. While SP is not known for vanity, many were surprised that SP agreed to undergo what seemed to be a routine operation. Unfortunately, the operation had consequences, and SP found herself at the losing end. The operation cost SP what propelled her to fame when she was just starting out in the business. Soon, SP became depressed, but being a fighter all her life, SP had to rely on her other traits to make sure she earns a living.
Many of her friends in the industry felt bad for SP. Knowing that she is not exactly someone who has steady income or can afford another operation, some of her friends and followers pulled their resources together and provided the budget for SP to undergo her much needed operation. While the public waited for SP to undergo the operation, she had other plans in mind.
SP is not a saint, and she had developed certain vices as she aged. First on her list is her alleged drinking problem. Stories abound of SP’s drinking habit, which, of course, causes harm to the throat. Second, SP has been rumored to be a frequent visitor of gaming tables. While photos have yet to expose her playing on the slots or baccarat, stories of her gambling are unstoppable. The usual reason is that gambling is just a form of distraction. However, the worst of the rumors is her alleged involvement in something prohibited, which has yet to be proven.
Despite all these nasty stories about her, and yes, all are being linked to a younger man, SP is resilient. She never runs out of projects, but she is also very generous to her co-workers to the point that she would sometimes spend her day’s fee on the staff. This generosity is a legend among showbiz insiders, and they know that SP is capable of giving away money on a particular day without regard for her status the next day. In short, SP edifies the attitude of living for the moment.
Still, SP managed to receive money from celebrities for her impending operation. As the publicity for her having funds for her operation has been made, people are anxious for the day when SP will fly abroad to see the specialist surgeon. However, SP has been dillydallying for the longest time. Excuses are all that they have heard from SP. The main excuse is that SP is trying to take advantage of the fact that she her projects are coming one after the other. Nonetheless, her “donors” feel that they have been duped into supporting SP’s bad habits and yes, even the younger man. For now, they can kiss their money goodbye.

Clandestine Meeting Led to Desirable Outcome

When Controversial Actor (CA) left his network, he was called a range of names pertaining to his lack of gratitude for the effort the network invested to make him famous. Contrary to common assumption, the network was taking care of CA and his leaving was met with several questions. Nonetheless, CA was accused of valuing money over loyalty. As CA tried to move on with his career, his luster seemed to die down, and suddenly, he was no longer as hot as during the time when he was still with his original home. Although his presence left a void, the network easily built-up other talents and CA was no longer missed.
However, CA unexpectedly bounced back in a movie that was initially harshly criticized for the seeming lack of chemistry of the lead actors. After the overwhelming box office returns, CA became bankable again. He even won acting awards for his role. Still, his fans hoped that he would return to his former network, where he could definitely add more excitement.
When circumstances indicated that CA was happily settled in his new network, he found himself in a project that had many connections to his former network. This move was read as a sign that CA was coming back. Yet, both sides are silent, and CA is continuing his projects with his current station as well as other outfits. As to the reason his former network seemed to soften up towards him, people can only speculate.
Allegedly, a secret meeting took place between CA and a Powerful Mover (PM) abroad. CA and PM took separate flights and then saw each other at the said location. Then, when PM came back, she immediately talked to other insiders and recommended that a project should be given to CA. As PM is very influential, the first actor (FA) who has been quite loyal to the station was bumped off, and the role was given to CA. Comparing both actors, CA is more competent, whereas FA has not been quite lucky with his projects. However, FA, despite offers from other stations, has opted to remain loyal even if the network has not really been giving him worthy projects.
The grapevine has it that CA is a favorite of PM. A reality check is that success in a network also depends on the backer. Thus, if the backer is well-placed, he or she can easily get excellent projects for the concerned talent even if previous projects did not perform as expected. If CA is indeed the favorite of PM, what happens to her former apple of the eye (AE), who has been relegated from primetime to an afternoon slot? Perhaps PM has gone tired of AE and has shifted attention to the hunkier and more charming CA.

BOC: No More Random Checks on Balikbayan Boxes

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) will no longer randomly open balikbayan boxes, the bureau announced Monday night.
The BOC, in a press statement, said the decision was made after President Aquino met with Customs chief Alberto Lina and Cesar Purisima earlier in the day.
"[Aquino] emphasized that OFW families view the balikbayan box as an integral part of the family relationship to nurture loved ones at home and as a tangible sign of their love and concern for their family members," the bureau said.
To prevent tampering or theft of the content of balikbayan boxes, Aquino ordered the Bureau of Customs to immediately do the following:
"First, there will be no random or arbitrary physical inspection of balikbayan boxes. Moving forward, all containers of balikbayan boxes should undergo mandatory x-ray and K-9 examination--at no cost to the sender or the OFW," the statement said. "Only in cases where there are derogatory findings from the x-ray or K-9 examination will there be a physical inspection of goods."
"Second, in the event of a physical inspection, the Bureau will request that an Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) representative or a designated officer of an OFW Association be present, with provisions for CCTV monitoring of the inspection areas," it added.
The BOC warned that government employees who violate these protocols and steal from care packages will face criminal charges.
"We encourage the public to submit videos and photographic evidence of illegal acts to the Commissioner of Customs," it said.
NO BACKTRACKING ON TAXES
The statement, however, did not say anything on taxes imposed on the content of balikbayan boxes.
Lina earlier defended taxes on the content of balikbayan boxes, saying the bureau is mandated to prevent the entry of contraband items as well as assess the value of items that need to be taxed.
The Customs chief noted that by definition, balikbayan boxes are packages brought by overseas Filipinos returning to the Philippines. On the other hand, "balikbayan boxes" sent by Filipinos who are not returning to the country should be considered "shopping boxes."
He said overseas Filipinos returning to the country are given tax exemptions for items with value of up to P10,000, based on a presidential decree issued by then President Ferdinand Marcos.
Every item sent via padala package is taxable, he added.
"[If you live abroad], you can bring anything but you will be taxed. There is no exemption. If you are a balikbayan with the intention of coming back to our country, with your passport and everything, like people who have studied abroad or returning OFWs, these are the only people given the privilege to bring in goods and that will not be taxed if the value of the goods is P10,000 and below," he said.
He denied that the actual exemption is $500 and below, saying the exchange rate then when the presidential decree was issued was about $1:PHP7 or about P3,500. He said the exemption has been raised to P10,000.
PART OF FILIPINO CULTURE
Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz earlier opposed the random opening of balikbayan boxes, saying that the care packages are part of an eduring Filipino cultural trait.
"The balik-bayan box is part of Filipino culture and tradition and I don't think OFWs will abuse this tradition to send in or smuggle contraband that will put them and their families in danger," Baldoz said in a statement.
Baldoz said the balikbayan boxes should not be treated as commercial transactions as these are "re very personal and close to the heart of OFWs."
"Majority of OFWs set aside and patiently wait for months whatever material possession they have acquired abroad - clothes, shoes, perfumes, canned goods, home appliances, and personal gadgets - and send these home as gifts and as symbols of their generosity and love, not as items or objects of commerce... their monetary value may not be so high or great to merit BOC's special interest for revenue generation," she added.
