Joan Rivers Dies at Age 81, Funeral Planned for Sunday in New York

Comedian Joan Rivers died in a New York hospital Thursday afternoon, a week after suffering cardiac arrest during a medical procedure, her daughter said.

"She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends," Melissa Rivers said in a written statement.

The funeral for Rivers will be at Temple Emanu-El in Manhattan on Sunday, according to temple spokeswoman Elizabeth Fezrine. Details, including the time and if the public will be allowed to attend, are not yet known, she said.

Rivers, 81, had been on life support at Manhattan's Mount Sinai hospital, where she was taken after she stopped breathing at the Yorkville Endoscopy clinic last Thursday.

Rivers was undergoing an apparently minor elective procedure at the clinic when she suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest, according to the New York Fire Department.

Paramedics took her by ambulance to Mount Sinai Hospital, about a mile from the clinic, where she was initially listed in critical condition.

The outpatient clinic is now being investigated by the New York State Department of Health, spokesman James O'Hara said.

Her death also has triggered an investigation by the New York medical examiner's office, its spokeswoman, Julie Bolcer, told CNN. "The cause and manner of death will be announced at some point," she said.

The Rivers family made very little information about her medical condition public, finally confirming Tuesday that she was on life support.

"My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother," her daughter said. "Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated.'

Melissa Rivers and her son Cooper have spent the past week by Rivers' hospital bedside, rushing there last Thursday when they learned of her illness.

'My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh," Melissa Rivers said. "Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."

The clinic has not responded to repeated calls from CNN about the state's investigation.

Yorkville Endoscopy's website says it is an "ambulatory surgical center" that has been "approved by the Department of Health." The description of its accreditations is blank.

"Yorkville Endoscopy is a state of the art facility, staffed by highly experienced endoscopists whose mission is to provide safe and compassionate care to patients and their families," the website says.

Tributes from Joan's friends

Tributes to Rivers and her long career included one from former first lady Nancy Reagan, whose close circle of friends included Rivers.

"Joan Rivers was not only a dear friend, but one of the kindest and funniest people I ever knew," Reagan said. "I doubt there's anyone who hasn't laughed at her or with her until they cried. Today our tears are those of sadness. I know I join millions in saying, 'Thanks for the good times Joan, we will truly miss you.' My love and deepest sympathy go to Melissa and Cooper."

Former CNN host Larry King knew Rivers for 45 years. "She knew no boundaries," King said. "Everything was funny to her. You couldn't really object because she took no prisoners."

Hollywood mourns a friend

Donald Trump, who chose her as the winner on a season of "Celebrity Apprentice," said Rivers "was stronger at the end than she was at the beginning. She had unbelievable stamina."

Ryan Seacrest, who worked with her on E! shows, called Rivers "a trailblazer in so many ways."

Liza Minnelli said Rivers was "my dear friend."

"I will miss her but I will always remember the laughter and friendship she brought into my life," Minnelli said.

E! and NBCUniversal, producers of Rivers' TV show "Fashion Police," sent condolences to her family on "this incredibly sad day."

"For decades Joan has made people laugh, shattered glass ceilings and revolutionized comedy," the studio said.

"She was unapologetic and fiercely dedicated to entertaining all of us and has left an indelible mark on the people that worked with her and on her legions of fans. She's been a much beloved member of the E! family for over 20 years and the world is less funny without her in it. Today our hearts are heavy knowing Joan will not be bounding through the doors."

Finally, we encourage you to read the following 6 tips about how to avoid falling victim to these (and any future) scam sites.

Look at the URL

Unfortunately, even if you see a Women's Health® logo on the page, you may not be dealing with our website. Look at the website URL (located at the top of your browser) and be sure that it includes "womenshealthmag.com/" or "blog.womenshealthmag.com/" or "eatthis.womenshealthmag.com/". If anything comes between the ".com" and the "/" it is likely a fake website. Our site will never appear as "Womenshealthmagazine.net" or "womenshealthmag.com-the.us" These sites are fake.

Here are some fraudulent links we are aware of:

Beware variations of the Women's Health® logo—especially cases where it's attached to a number

In several instances, the site will have the Women's Health® logo, followed by a number (generally a 6 or 7). These sites are fake. The legitimate Women's Health® website does not have any numbers attached to it. There is only one true Women's Health® site: WomensHealthMag.com.

Pay attention to where you found the link

Women's Health® will occasionally endorse other Rodale Inc. products on our affiliated websites. If you are directed to these through our official WomensHealthMag.com homepage or newsletters, you can be sure that it is safe. But if you find a site that does not have "womenshealthmag.com" in the URL and also wasn't linked to directly from our site, our newsletters, or Rodale affiliated sites and newsletters, then it is likely a scam.

Be wary of multiple endorsements

In several instances, websites are claiming that we endorse their products along with other high-profile experts, such as Dr. Oz or Oprah. These sites are likely a scam if you were not directed there by the endorser's own page.

Don't believe diet pill endorsements

While Women's Health® does occasionally endorse dietary supplements, we will never endorse weight loss pills. Rather, we more often urge our readers to stick to healthy lifestyle alternatives, like these tips and these tricks.

Compare and contrast real and fake

If you look at WomensHealthMag.com, you'll see that our house formatting is fairly uniform and that all pages have similar fonts and text sizing standards. In contrast, the diet pill sites are designed differently. Here are three screen shots of scam sites (you can click to enlarge)—notice how, while they do use the Women's Health® logo, they do not look similar to our site in design or layout.

Mark Bautista’s Mom Arrested for Estafa

The mother of GMA 7 singer and actor Mark Bautista was arrested Wednesday in Cagayan De Oro City after police serve a warrant of arrest on her over a pending estafa charge, according to a radio report Thursday.

Susan Bautista was arrested after her friend filed an estafa charge in court due to unpaid debt.

Macasandig Police Station chief Senior Inspector Ariel Philip Pontillas did not disclose the amount to be paid by Bautista, saying that it is a personal arrangement between the two parties.

Pontillas also said that Bautista may be freed on bail.

Mark Bautista has not issued any statement to the media regarding his mother’s case.

Mark Bautista is currently in United Kingdom as part of the West End cast of the musical “Here Lies Love”.

Bautista plays the role of former president Ferdinand Marcos in the said musical.

Ronnie Ricketts Gets Suspension from Optical Media Board

The Office of Ombudsman found substantial evidence to suspend top officials of the Optical Media Board (OMB) led by its chief executive officer, action star Ronald "Ronnie" Ricketts, for neglect of duty in post-raid operations.

In a joint resolution dated August 28, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales ordered the suspension of Ricketts, OMB Executive Director Cyrus Paul Valenzuela, Enforcement and Inspection Head Manuel Mangubat, investigation agent Joseph Arnaldo and computer operation official Glenn Perez.

Morales also ordered the filing of criminal charges against them for apparent violations of Republic Act 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

On May 27, 2010, OMB agents raided the Sky High Marketing Corp. located in Quiapo, Manila, investigation findings showed.

The team seized 127 boxes and two sacks of pirated DVDs, VCDs, and a video recorder. They also arrested three Chinese nationals.

After the raid, the seized items were brought to the OMB office in the afternoon but were pulled out from the premises in the same evening.

Records show that Ricketts instructed the pull-out of the seized items, without any approved gate pass, using the Isuzu Elf truck owned by the raided establishment Sky High.

Ricketts, who was present during the raid, "did not deny Perez’s claim that it was he who ordered the reloading," the resolution stated.

As head of agency, Ricketts "should have directed the filing of case/s against the violators, but he did not," the Ombudsman said.

"The unjustified release of the confiscated items compromised the pieces of evidence that could substantiate a case/s against those RA 9239 violators, thereby giving unwarranted benefit to Sky High Marketing Corp. and its officers," Morales added.

Clash of the Two Events

Is a competition a brewin’ between the past and present women PW1 and PW2 of High Profile Personality HP? Hope not, for this is the last thing that the controversial HP and PW2 need at this point.

The love story of HP and PW2 underwent several acid tests from the beginning. The public and the netizens witnessed how the couple fought for their love amidst challenges to thwart it. Now, after a long battle, by all indications, it seems that HP and PW2 are now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Finally, the people who were once antagonists have softened up on them. It shows how HP and PW2 are now able to move and express themselves with ease. Noticeably though, amidst all the brouhaha of the past, nothing was heard of PW1 from whom HP has sired Young Kids YK.

Here’s the latest from the grapevine. Reportedly, PW1 has been busy with the preparations for her kids YK’s forthcoming birthday. She had allegedly engaged the services of people to assist her for the event which will be held in a country club in the metro. Reportedly, invitations had already been sent out.

Here’s the gist, PW2 is not to be outdone, for she herself is likewise into the thick of preparations for YK’s party, which will happen a day after the one that PW1 is organizing. If reports are to believed, PW2 had allegedly made arrangements with YK’s school teachers and  staff regarding the birthday event to be held at a posh, exclusive venue where classmates and teachers are reportedly invited.

People wonder ‘though, how was it that PW2 was able to penetrate YK’s school when she is not the listed mother/guardian of YK? Is something amiss here?

At any rate, two big birthday parties are set for the lucky celebrants. This early, many things are running in the minds of those in the know: Whose party between two organizers will make a mark and will keep everyone talking – the one of the Mom or that one who is wishing to be the Mom? Your pick.

Heart Evangelista and Sen. Chiz Escudero Wedding on Feb 15

The anticipated wedding of Kapuso actress Heart Evangelista and Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero is slated on February 15 next year, a source privy to the wedding preparations confirmed to The STAR.

The recently engaged couple reportedly had a meeting earlier today with a wedding planner to discuss details connecting the intimate celebration, which will happen in Balesin Island Club in Quezon province, with a reception in Manila, where the couple's friends will be invited.

According to earlier reports, Evangelista and Escudero are keen on tying the knot on February 14 next year, which would stipulate a triple celebration -- Heart's birthday, Valentine's Day, and their wedding anniversary.

This led to speculations that the actor-politician couple "bumped off" someone else's wedding to have things go their way.

Makeup artist Ria Gamboa alleged that her friend's "tediously planned Balesin wedding" was cancelled because "a celebrity-politician couple wanted theirs on the same day."

While Gamboa did not identify names in her Facebook post, many netizens were quick to point out that she was referring to the wedding of television host Cesca Litton and her fiance Kyle Kalaw who got engaged last April.

Litton in a statement claimed that, indeed, it was her wedding that was "bumped off".

Litton said they had been coordinating with the management of Balesin and had done ocular visits, food tasting, table lay-outs, and had discussed logistics and rooming for the supposed February 14 wedding.

"We were always told (the date) was available," she added. "It came as a surprise when I received a phone call from my coordinator just last Saturday, saying that Chiz and Heart have been approved for Feb 14 after they have spoken to the owner Mr. Ongpin to reserve the date."

"It is unfortunate that hard work, time, and effort mean nothing when all it takes are the right connections for other people," Litton posted on her social media accounts.

Evangelista had firmly denied accusations that they had any involvement with the cancellation of Litton's wedding.

"I'm a bride-to-be, she's a bride-to-be. Who would do that to any bride-to-be? There's no truth to it and I hope ma-iron out nila," she told the press.

Our source as well denied that the choice of date for the Evangelista-Escudero nuptials is connected with the controversy.

"They wanted to get married on 15-15 (15th day of February 2015), patterned from Escudero's birthday which happens to be 10-10 (October 10)," our source said. -- Cherry Salazar, Salve Asis

Bride Wars? Cesca Litton Speaks on Heart-Chiz Wedding

Heart reaches out to Cesca over Balesin mix-up

TV host Cesca Litton said she and her fiancee, Tyke Kalaw, had been preparing for months for their wedding in Balesin Island Club on February 14, 2015, until she got a call last Saturday informing her that the date has been reserved for another couple's nuptials.

In Litton's statement read on "Aquino & Abunda Tonight" by guest host Toni Gonzaga on Tuesday, Litton confirmed that her planned wedding in Balesin was the subject of a viral Facebook post criticizing the resort for supposedly prioritizing "a celebrity-politician couple [who wanted their wedding] on the same day."

While the post, reportedly from makeup artist Ria Gamboa, did not mention any names, online speculation tagged newly engaged couple Sen. Francis "Chiz" Escudero and actress Heart Evangelista.

Litton, who got engaged to Kalaw in April, said they had been making trips to Balesin as early as May. At the time, she said the resort's management confirmed that February 14, 2015 was available to accommodate a wedding.

During their first ocular visit, Litton said they arranged with staff members of Balesin to have the wedding ceremony held at the resort's chapel, the cocktails at Balesin Sala, and the reception at Toscana Village.

During their latest trip to the resort in August, the former ABS-CBN host said she brought along their wedding coordinator and stylist. This time, she said she and Kalaw arranged more details with Balesin management, including the food and table layout.

"We sat down with managers to discuss the logistics and rooming, and, again, clarified that February 14 is available," she said.

'A call to the owner'

However, over the weekend, Litton said she was informed that Balesin could no longer accommodate the wedding on the said date.

"It came as a surprise when I received a phone call from my coordinator just last Saturday that Chiz and Heart had been approved for February 14 after they had spoken to the owner, Mr. Ongpin, to reserve the date," she said, referring to businessman Roberto Ongpin, chairman of Balesin developer Alphaland.

Litton lamented that her months of planning had been put to waste, supposedly by a single phone call. She added that she had to spend on traveling numerous times to Balesin to finalize details of her wedding.

"Had we known that all it took was a call to the owner, then perhaps none of those formalities should have been followed," she said.

"In all our trips to Balesin and discussion with management asking to receive February 14, we were always told it was available," Litton added. "We would not have invested time and money, including flying out our coordinator and stylist, had they informed us that the venue was booked from the beginning."

Heart: We're not like that

In the statement published on Balesin's official website, Ongpin said he indeed offered Escudero and Evangelista to have their wedding held at the resort after hearing of their engagement.

Supposedly upon getting confirmation from the couple, Ongpin said checked with the reservations department of Balesin whether the venue would be available on February 14. At the time, Ongpin added, nobody had confirmed on that date.

"So, nobody has been 'bumped off,'" he said.

Meanwhile, in separate interviews, both Escudero and Evangelista said they have nothing to do with the supposed "bumping off" of a planned wedding in Balesin.

"We're not like that," the actress said. "This is the best day of our lives. I'm a bride-to-be, she's a bride-to-be. Who would do that to any bride-to-be? There's no truth to it and I hope ma-iron out nila."

On social media, Evangelista also clarified to her followers that no final date has been set for her and Escudero's wedding.

Escudero echoed this in an interview with Senate reporters, adding that the supposed issue concerning the other wedding is for Balesin to resolve. "Sa parte namin, ni wala pa kaming pinal na petsa o lugar," he said. "Paano naman kami magiging dahilan at madadamay sa issue na 'yan?"

According to Gonzaga, who spoke with Evangelista on the phone earlier Tuesday, the actress has tried reaching out to Litton on the issue. Gonzaga, however, said she could not give details of the conversation between the two.
