Suspicious of the Purpose

When this young new media personality (NP) was reported to have a fatal illness, his followers got down to work to make sure his present condition was comfortable. Mainstream media covered their story and presented to the public how illness had slowed down the once active NP. During his interviews, NP said that he never thought that his lifestyle would lead to his sickness, as he was young and well loved by his partner and family.

To raise funds to cover the expenses for NP’s recovery, family and friends came through. At one point, a concert was held on his behalf. The concert was well attended and was able to capture the drama of the love surrounding NP. A very close relative (VC) also held his own event to help NP. Though, not as well known in showbiz, VC is famous for his special interest, and he even pledged that if he needed to sell his stuff for NP, he will do it. For his event, VC requested people who shared his interest to donate rare stuff for an auction for NP. People donated, and the auction raised much money for the purpose of helping NP.

After the said fund was sent to VC, news came out that NP was responding well to treatment. On a more optimistic view, another angle alleged that the fatal illness seemed to have not existed at all. However, the next announcement stirred controversy among the special interest group and participants of the event: VC announced he will soon be opening his second branch. While those who helped in the event did so because of its noble purpose, the announcement of VP left a bad taste in the mouth. Hence, people who helped VC are now doubtful of what really happened to the funds they raised out of good faith. Talk about timing!

Likely to Lose or to Push

Winning the network war is never easy as networks will use the most creative means to assure they remain on top and recoup the investments. To attract the audience, this network (TN) spent much on securing talents from news, production, and entertainment personalities. The network shows were given much attention and the teleseryes were interesting as well. It seemed that TN was merely following the same strategies the other networks did to secure their slots.

However, regardless of these strategies, TN could not rise above its current place.

Despite the odds, TN continued with various combinations of programs. Some shows were cancelled even if they were the ones rating. Other shows were cooked up. A few months ago, TN announced that it was embarking on its biggest project, which was the Filipino adaptation of a popular American teen drama thriller. The adaptation would serve as a vehicle for the homegrown talents of TN. However, as soon as the news was floated, a clamor not to pursue the project emerged from social media. Fans of the foreign series echoed the usual fears, such as the version will be of poor quality and the lack of originality.

Early this year, TN issued a denial that the adaptation will not push through. Now, TN recently released its program lineup, and the said adaptation was not in the list. Thus, some kibitzers could not help but comment that someone might have lied. Allegedly, those who were promised this assignment are left in limbo: Should they remain hopeful and stay on or should they look for other projects?

Incidentally, TN generated its largest viewership when it aired various sports programs. At one point, the ratings soared higher than the other programs of the other networks at the same time. This development prompted the idea of TN to prioritize sports over other genres. Perhaps, TN should focus on a specific type to establish its identity, which would assure its niche among the viewers.

You can make bad choices and find yourself in a downward spiral or you can find something that gets you out of it. -Ray LaMontagne
