“Nobody is indispensable,” is an adage that is often forgotten and only when reality sets in does the meaning of the saying becomes upsetting. Loyalty, reputation, and years of working can no longer guarantee that a talent will remain in something that he/she loves to do. After all, decisions are not in their hands.
With stiff competition, a production meeting was called and all the talents were invited. Network Mainstay (NM) was among those present and who eagerly awaited how their team would welcome new talents.
As the plans were presented, NM noticed that Singer 1, Singer 2, and Singer 3 were given the top chores, while the remaining other talents, who have been performing regularly, were not in the regular plan. The shock came when she realized that she was not even in any of the future plans. After doing what she loved most for decades, she was seemed to have been dropped coldly. However, the production heads said the NM will still be part of the show, but she would be on an on-call basis. Only when her services will be needed will she be asked to report.
NM’s reaction was predictable. She was teary-eyed, as she did not expect to be part of the casualties. She, who had spent many years and already a regular fixture was pushed aside. It seems that her talent and what she could do were belittled because new ones were taking over. To appease NM, someone said that she could be given another project that could showcase her acting skills. As the atmosphere was getting emotional, NM opted to skip the rest of the meeting.
After NM left, a pep talk was given and the attendees were reminded that axing is inevitable for the sake of innovation. In their case, their exposure would be limited to give way to the new segments. More importantly, they requested for the new show to be given a chance. Much is at stake for any show that undergoes changes.
While the talk was ongoing, an insider commented that NM’s presence in the show was not really felt and that her absence would not really be noticed. Besides, NM does not have any contract with the network, so no agreement has to be honored.
The question is if NM will now be offered a contract by other networks given that she was shabbily treated. Things are still emotional and NM might need time to process what had hit her blindly.
