Check Your Professionalism

Serving the government is deemed an honor to anyone, especially if he/she has been appointed by no less than the highest authority of a country. To be chosen implies that one has the best credentials and has the trust of the top leader. While others consider an appointment an honor, others have taken advantage to dishonor the post, and thus, affect the image of the appointing personality.

When Versatile Personality (VP) was appointed to a position in a department, critics questioned the credentials of VP and his worthiness to such post. As a veteran of intrigues throughout his career, VP kept quiet and did not respond to these questions unlike earlier appointees who took to social media to divulge their background and personally justify their worthiness to their position. Often, these posts would include the desire to serve the country and responses that attempt to get back at bashers, whom they associate as coming from other parties.

While VP took command of his office, questions started to emerge concerning his attitude and performance. First, his alleged hiring of relatives was noticed, and worse, his plantilla included friends whom he had personally appointed. Second, in one of the big projects he spearheaded, analysts noted the conflict of interest, as he allegedly had earlier signed an agreement for a lesser amount with a company, which, incidentally produced the project at a higher price. Third, VP was observed to be unfamiliar with protocol and the mandate of his office. Worse, he even has plans to transfer his office to a full structure that used to be the office of a high official. Transferring his office would incur additional costs, as his present office is one that is already owned by the department.

The list of accusations go on and on against VP, but the most glaring is his alleged poor performance as head. For instance, his delay in signing certain documents has led to delayed salaries. Then, his behavior is less than being professional, such as not doing work during office hours and throwing a fit if he does not get his way.

Unfortunately for VP, certain measures are being done to make sure the higher ups are made aware of his alleged questionable behavior. It would soon be a matter of time when official documents support the complaint. Everyone knows that if proven to be arrogant and benefitting from a position, immediate dismissal will be taken as well as possible snide remarks coming from the man himself.

‘I'm just trying to make up for lost times, and I have total awareness that when the work is coming it doesn't mean it's going to continue to come, so I'm taking advantage of this phenomenal period that I'm in now, to its fullest.’ – Ron Perlman

Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach: Why I Stand Up for LGBTQ Rights in the Philippines

I am Filipino, and like the vast majority of people in my country, I am a proud Catholic. I have a steadfast faith, and my religion is an essential element of who I am. Growing up, my family regularly attended mass, and I studied at a school that taught Christian fundamentals.

Religious establishments including the Catholic church teach that they are the one true faith, but the values instilled in me as a Christian have encouraged me to respect all beliefs and opinions. Growing up, my family taught me that to receive respect, you must first offer it.

My younger sister and I were raised by a single mother in Cagayan de Oro, a multi-ethnic environment and burgeoning city in the southern part of the Philippines that has earned the moniker “City of Golden Friendship.” My hometown serves as the gateway to Mindanao, the country’s second biggest island and home to people of many different religions and backgrounds. Growing up in such a diverse culture taught me the virtue of acceptance early in life and made me recognize that tolerance should be the norm, not the exception.

I am proud that the Philippines is every day becoming a more tolerant community; however, my liberal opinions on many social issues sometimes conflict with Christianity’s teachings.

I myself owe a lot to the LGBTQ community, many of whom are my closest friends. Without their accepting attitudes toward my own flaws and struggles, I would not be where I am today. But while we are beginning to see the seeds of change in the Catholic church, the LGBTQ community in the Philippines doesn’t yet enjoy equal rights.

Perhaps my non–traditional family unit allowed me to accept others’ differences without judgement and has made me proud to advocate for LGBTQ rights as a Christian. In fact, I find the strength to do just that through my faith. Undoubtedly, there will continue to be times when my faith and secular opinions clash, but in those moments, I find comfort in an old saying: “Live and let live.”

Pia Wurtzbach, an actress, TV host and model, was crowned Miss Universe 2015.
