Just A Smile

Image has always been a problem of celebrities and the public. On the one hand, the public expects celebrities to have the same personality they have on screen with that of their off-cam behavior.

If the celebrity is typecast to play goody roles, then in public, he/she is expected to be polite and gracious to anyone. He/She should be cordial and nice to people who would ask for selfies or just say ‘Hi!’ On the other hand, if a celebrity always plays the villain role, then he/she can be forgiven for being rude and arrogant in public. Witnesses to the ill-behavior will simply shrug off that celebrity’s disposition as being true to himself/herself.

Sadly, expectations are high for the first type of celebrity when the cameras are off. When Popular Celebrity (PC) was spotted in a mall while visiting a commercial site, mallgoers were expecting PC to be as nice as she is on media. PC has always been portrayed on the positive side and even if she does seem mischievous on cam, her nice image prevails. Thus, mallgoers expected PC to smile when they see her. She disappointed them. While walking, PC would hold her neck still and avoid eye contact at any one. They could not even see a smile on her face to acknowledge their presence.

Frequent mallgoers who are familiar with other celebrity-entrepreneurs in the area could not help but compare PC with the behavior of Male Performer (MP). When MP was supervising his venture, he was always cordial with the curious. He would allow them to have selfies with him and he would even smile sincerely in their photos. Thus, MP, though not as famous as PC, was deemed nicer than someone who has been stereotyped playing good roles.

‘You like to assign roles to the people in your life. And when they don't play their parts right, you have a hard time accepting that.’ ― Kasie West
