The surge in the popularity of the Internet has resulted in social media personalities that have more followers than traditional media celebrities. The popularity meter is based on the number of followers or subscribers, and the more the merrier, of course. Thus, people take advantage of the opportunity to be popular, which translates to revenue for the lucky ones.
However, amassing the followers and maintaining loyalty are not easy to accomplish. Most social media celebrities have discovered their edge or that quality that sets them apart from other online personalities. From that point onwards, an ordinary person’s life can change overnight.
When a Non-showbiz Personality (NP) started building a reputation on the Internet, popularity spread by word of mouth and in response to a certain need of followers. Soon, the social media posts, especially, videos, acquired many likes and testimonies attesting the influence of NP.
Thinking that she is surrounded by fame, NP started making demands at events she joined even though she was just a participant and not a major guest. In one such mall event up north, NP wanted security staff for her. The organizers raised an eyebrow at the VIP attitude of NP. NP said that she needed security to protect her from her anticipation of being mobbed by a crowd. Well, the organizers did not buy into the demand of NP and remained unresponsive. Shouldering additional cost for a specific security detail for NP was out of the question.
On the day of the event, NP showed up, but no security came to guard her. After some time, people started going in and interacting with the participants. As for NP, very few came over to see what she had to offer and the crowd she expected to flock around her was probably part of her imagination. The attitude of NP is no longer surprising, as her idiosyncrasies are slowly leaking in the Internet.
