Choice of Leading Man

When everyone thought the negotiation was going to be a tit-for-tat, the announcement of Leading Man (LM) for Sensational Celebrity (SC) raised mixed reactions. LM was unexpected and the excitement suddenly died down for the project. One distinguishing character of the Philippine movie audience is the meddling attitude toward screen partners. In the case of LM and SC, fans preferred Network Actor (NA).

Prior to announcing LM as the lead actor, a pre-production meeting was held and the presented story was suitable for NA and SC. Almost everyone agreed that NA fits the part and working with SC could bring a breather in his career. While excitement was high, Influential Person (IP) from the camp of NA raised a valid point.

IP disagreed with the idea and dissuaded the body from having NA as the lead in the project with SC. IP cited fears of SC not being an assured box-office personality based on the not so impressive performance of her last movie with her screen partner. IP did not want to risk the reputation of NA when it comes to return on investments. As far as IP is concerned, SC is still a newbie who has much to prove, unlike her ward, NA. In addition, IP thinks that SC is distant from the masses, and thus, would not be a good partner for NA. Hence, the risk is high that the project might not earn an amount that would match NA’s reputation.

As IP’s word is powerful, the decision was to drop NA and look for a new leading man. After studying options, the management arrived at LM. The said project would focus on memorable and catchy lines, which paved the way for LM’s comeback. After coming up with memorable performances with quotable lines and impressive acting in his projects afterwards, LM was the best choice.
