Just Go

When controversy occurs without warning, management has to do quick thinking for damage control that might be needed. However, the heads can only do as much, as the talents involved have to do what they do best, that is, continue the act.

With big projects coming up and endorsements at their doorsteps, young couple could no longer stay together and thus, decided to drop everything for the sake of their peace of mind. When the management found out the truth, the heads could only cringe, as the incident meant revising career plans and facing possible losses. Usually, breakups translate to negative responses to projects done by a couple who have newly broken up. Financially, breakups mean disastrous box-office results.

With much investment in the young couple, the management instructed the parties involved to fix their mess. At least, in public, they should show civility and if possible, the sweetness their fans loved from them. Male Counterpart (MC) agreed as long as everything will be limited to interviews and on screen. Similarly, Female Counterpart (FC) had to go with the plan.

The management tried to spin the issue and fed information that Third Party (TP) entered only after MC and FC have broken up. By contrast, rumors have it that TP was part of the reasons why the young couple decided to split. Loopholes were showing in the woven stories and the management had to think of more ways to solve the professional relationship of MC and FC.

During a performance, MC and FC were instructed to be sweet on stage. The two did their best and their sweetness while performing seemed convincing. Offstage, things were allegedly difficult. MC requested for a different schedule and did not want to go with FC to the venue. He, however, promised to do his part as long as his request is granted. Moreover, he booked his accommodations away from FC. He no longer wanted to be associated with her offstage. While rehearsing, the two hardly communicated and it was sheer acting that brought them through their performance. After the performance, FC asked MC to join them for dinner, he refused and preferred to have a quiet meal even it meant being solitary. However, sensitive couple understood what he was going through and kept him company.

Apparently, MC wanted his distance, as he had to clear his mind from being pointed by fans as the one who caused the breakup. By contrast, FC was behaving like she had not done anything. Then, MC would get calls from the camp of FC telling him to fix his relationship with MC. The pressure was getting on his nerves, and thus, he wanted to stay away from anything that had to do with FC.

San Miguel Beer’s Arwind Santos was fined P200,000 by the PBA on Thursday for directing a monkey gesture at TNT KaTropa import Terrence Jones during Game 5 of the Commissioner’s Cup Finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial handed the heftiest fine in recent memory after summoning Santos at the league office in Libis to explain the actions he made with 1:05 left in the second quarter of the Beermen’s 99-94 win Wednesday night.

“Walang lugar ang racial discrimination sa basketball at sports, in general, at sa PBA, in particular. Hindi pinahihintulutan ng liga yung mga ganung aksyon, at kung maulit pa, mas mabigat na sanction ang ipapataw natin,” said Marcial.

(Racial discrimination has no place in basketball, sports in general and the PBA in particular. The league does not condone such actions, and a stiffer punishment will be handed if similar incidents happen in the future.)

“Bilang Commissioner, humihingi ako ng pasensya at pang-unawa kay Mr. Terrence Jones at sa kanyang pamilya. Ang PBA ay tahanan para sa lahat, bukas para sa lahat at walang kinikilalang kulay, lahi o paniniwala,” he added.

(As Commissioner, I would like to apologize and ask for understanding from Mr. Terrence Jones and his family. The PBA is open for everyone regardless of color, race or beliefs.)

Santos also must commit a total of 100 hours of community service and undergo seminar and counseling on equality and racial discrimination.

The veteran forward later used his Twitter account to apologize to Jones and to the public.

“I don’t mean anything bad (to) you (Jones). I hope you forgive me (and) I wanna say sorry,” Santos said in a video that lasted 44 seconds.

“Gusto ko humingi ng taos-pusong pagpapatawad sa fans ng (TNT), San Miguel, PBA at sa lahat ng mga nasaktan. (I would like to sincerely apologize to the fans of TNT, San Miguel, the PBA and all those who were hurt by my actions.)

“Wala po akong masamang intensyon. Inaamin ko po, mali po ako. Sorry po, sana mapatawad niyo po ako. Tao lang po ako na nagkakamali din. Yun lang po. Sana mapatawad niyo po ako. Sorry,” Santos added.

(I have no ill intentions. I admit, I was wrong. I’m sorry, I hope you forgive me. I’m just a person who makes mistakes too. That’s all. I hope you forgive me. Sorry.)

Santos refused to apologize hours after Game 5, saying that the move was done in an attempt at playing mind games with Jones.

Jones condemned Santos’ actions the following day and called on the league to take “swift and significant action.”
