However, the journey between the first day and the completion of the project is not easy. Too many bumps and potholes lie ahead.
On the set, a director sets his/her rules and expects the actors to follow or else, the project will not run smoothly and not abiding might lead to delays. As the guideline of working within a certain number of hours is in place, directors have to make sure that they finish on time; otherwise, they will incur extra expenses for extending the taping or shooting. The most important directive is to come to the set on time. Sometimes, the call time is earlier that the actual shoot. The time could be used for makeup, last minute instructions, and of course, preparing for scenes.
When Admirable Director (AD) started the day of the shooting, expectations were high, as the actors were excited to work with AD. Thus, AD expected the best from the actors scheduled for that day. As some of the scenes were recorded without any hitches, One of the Actress (OA) was fretting when it was her time. When the cameras rolled, AD shouted ‘Cut!’ because OA could not complete her lines. OA apologized and the camera started rolling again. After a few seconds, the scene was stopped and AD gave instructions to the now uncomfortable OA. AD tried to teach a few tricks to help out OA.
Again, the same thing happened, OA could not deliver as expected. Thus, the atmosphere became tense, as AD was becoming impatient. Then, without any word, AD stood up and walked away from the set. Crew members who have worked with AD before knew that AD was already upset and would rather stay away than risk screaming at OA’s incompetence. When OA realized something was wrong, she prayed hard that the day would not be packed up because of her.
After a long few minutes, AD returned on the set and OA was relieved. Like a teacher, AD realized that there is a duty that has to be done, which is to hone OA into becoming a better talent. Popularity is not enough, as talent is the one that will lead to sustaining one’s career for decades. In fairness to OA, she had several lessons learned. The first of which is to make sure that she comes to the set prepared by memorizing her lines. Thus, that day made OA realized that, although she loves acting, she has to be more professional by adjusting to the demands of the director, just like a student who values every word of the teacher.
‘Once you realize that you're in something that you've always wanted and you don't want to lose it, you behave differently. And that means the integrity, the professionalism, and knowing what's right from wrong and still making choices that you probably wouldn't have made.’ – Paul Anka
