Promoting Just Ways in Team Management

Someone once said that the cheapest way to promote a university is sports. Thus, a university that has gained popularity in sports, aside from its academic programs, is bound to be a top choice among enrollees. Of course, other than the economic gains, bragging rights among the alumni and other supporters can do well for a university. These factors often create a frenzy regarding the recruitment of top players of certain high schools.

Take the case of this hotshot athlete (HA). Prior to finishing high school, top universities were vocal in their quest in convincing HA to play for their colors. Other than his athletic ability, HA has the brains and attitude that make for an ideal university student. After negotiations, his family opted for HA to play for a particular university (PU).

The decision to play for PU proved to be correct as HA helped propel the university back to its glory days. In recognition of his contribution, HA gained popularity and endorsements that could ever be expected. More importantly, another factor that led to the success of PU in sports is the return of a former benefactor (FB). The resurrection of FB provided the inspiration and financial support for HA and his team.

Soon, FB learned that HA was enjoying more perks than the rest of the team members. Instead of coddling HA, FB said that HA should be given the same benefits as the other players. This statement meant dropping HA’s top-up, which is almost the same amount as the allowance. In addition, each of his parents allegedly receives twice the allowance HA receives. However, FB could not do anything about the parents’ allowances, as this benefit is allegedly part of the contract they signed with a big corporation, who had a hand in making sure HA played with PU.

Will this development have an impact in the playing attitude of HA? The sports season opens soon, and in case the playing intensity of HA dips, then, we can only assume that money, indeed, can affect one’s performance.

Real equality is immensely difficult to achieve, it needs continual revision and monitoring of distributions. And it does not provide buffers between members, so they are continually colliding or frustrating each other. - Mary Douglas
