The Arrogance of the Big Winner

How much does it cost to begin a career in showbusiness? Others have career because they have familial connections, or their parents are established actors. Others get spotted by a talent scout or agent and their skills are fine-tuned through workshops. Others use their bodies to gain favors. However, the most common and shortest route to a career nowadays is joining reality shows or talent searches.

Networks invest in airtime to make the new faces familiar, and encourage the creation of a fan base. Some fans are hooked to the point of obsessively following the careers of their idols on and off camera. The former big winner (BW) in a reality show is no exception to this phenomenon. Although BW’s season did not generate as much interest as the previous seasons of the show, the contestants gained sufficient following, thanks to its loyal viewers. To stretch further interest in that show, love teams were encouraged. Hence, the pairing of BW with a tattooed female contestant (TF) gained a significant number of followers.

The BW-TF fan base has several groups and recently, these groups are having misunderstandings over issues. These issues stem from BW's attitude. Some groups are claiming that BW does not seem to acknowledge the existence of his fan base. They reiterate that they did their best to drum up interest in BW and TF after the reality show ended.

For example, they planned a meet-up (GTG in internet slang) with BW and TF. As the day came nearer, BW said he only knew of such an event from Twitter. The group claims that BW was always tagged. 

Nonetheless, BW could not make it because he had a provincial show to go to. Hence, no GTG happened. The fans feel neglected because they feel that BW is detached from them. Other fans are labelling the attitude of BW as a manifestation of arrogance.

Although BW is a product of a reality show, he cannot reason out that he does not know how to handle his fans. These days, fans are all over social networking sites and even blog sites. These are the same fans who voted for him to be the big winner. The same fans can extend his career, or cut it short if he does not shape up. Even if a network invests in a performer, as long as the fans are alienated, then that performer can only go so far.

Now that the show is over, BW should realize that his winning alone can not sustain his fame as much as his fans can. They may be sensitive, but gaining fans' loyalty would reap more than enough for any performer’s career. As some fans wished BW would realize that before it's too late. Otherwise, "Good luck," is the only thing they can wish for at this point.

Just Making the Most of His Time

Award-winning performer (AP) went abroad for a series of shows for the Filipino community. Often, most local talents underestimate their recognition-factor everytime they go abroad, and they take the risk of doing what they want away from the prying eyes of local fans. AP made the most of his time and thought he would not be recognized while he walked along the streets of the city where he just had a performance a few days ago. AP was spotted hurriedly entering a famous, upscale bathhouse in that city. He was with three other men, and they were very discreet as they approached the door.

What is a bathhouse? A bathhouse is a place where gay men meet other gay men to engage in certain activities. Because of the sensitivity of the activities, bathhouses are often exclusive and services are through membership only basis. Bathhouses have private rooms, saunas, whirlpools, etc. Certainly, there are rules and protocol to observe. Men go to bathhouses to engage in the activities and no one is allowed to be a killjoy by staying in one corner and be a mere observer. In that city, bathhouses are licensed, unlike in Manila, where bathhouses are illegal and often the subject of police raids and media feasts.

Ever since he started his career, AP has always been rumoured to be gay. However, to this day, especially in a recent interview, he has vehemently and publicly denied being gay. AP is alleged to have a relationship with a young actor and a flight attendant, both of which he has denied, of course. If AP does not want gay rumors to hound him, then he should be more than circumspect in his activities especially when he is abroad. May this be a big reminder to jolt him further: There is no safest place to hide for a Filipino celebrity. Remember that there is always a "kababayan" in every corner of the world. And with today's technology, impossible is nothing!

Thank you, Secretary Jesse Robredo for your Great Service to the Filipino Nation

A sudden loss, a life so fragile. He was the kind of man people would be proud to be. In the midst of such a loss, we are beset by things that are often so hard to understand - that good people like him have to be the first to go. Sec. Jesse Robredo was the first Filipino government leader who was a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award.

His brief stint as DILG secretary gave the Filipinos a benchmark what genuine public service is all about. To his dying days, he was the Filipino servant first, and ideal family man, second.  Great men like him will be long remembered.

Our deepest condolences to his family and those of his companions' families -- Capt. Jessup Bahinting and co-pilot KShitiz Chand, who perished with him. Prayers are therefore enjoined for their souls to be where they rightfully belong -- in God's loving kindness. Amen.

Reneging on Her Reward?

When an actor/actress promises something to a fan, expectations are high that the promise is delivered. For example, actress host 1 (AH1) gave one of her social network followers an I4S. AH1 happens to be very active in social networking, and despite her controversial choices in relationships, she seems to care for her fans and followers. Hardly has AH1 been known to use Twitter to get back at unsavory comments from other users.

However, actress host 2 (AH2), who is younger but more controversial than AH1, seems to be reneging on her promise to a fan. AH2 is also active on her social networking account and has a huge number of followers. One time, she asked her followers who owned a particular account name that she wanted to use for her photo sharing. The said account name is actually quite close to the account name AH2 uses in her social networking account.

To entice the owner to come out and relegate the account name, AH2 promised to give a high-end brand mobile. Soon, the owner contacted AH2 and gave her the details of the account she wanted. Then, the waiting for the promised mobile began. The fan waited. Then, she updated her status by saying that she still has not received the promised phone. The fan even asked someone close to AH2, who gave his assurance that AH2 will give the phone.

Hopefully, AH2 will not break her promise to the fan. AH2, however, must act fast because as days pass, her other followers might be wondering if she kept her word. She also needs all the positive publicity she can get if she wants to regain her footing in the industry. For artists who earn much, a mobile is worth nothing compared to the repercussions of disappointing a fan in the eyes of virtual followers.

No More Burden

Sometime ago, a popular band (PB) created a stir when rumors flew about its impending disbandment. Fans could not believe the rumor as the band was one of the most successful ever in the rock scene. The members of the band all came from other groups that had earlier disbanded. Hence, fans thought PB would never suffer the same fate. The disbandment came quickly and its legions of fans were in  shock for a time until it was officially confirmed that the members had indeed gone separate ways.

What gives? Was it too much fame? Was it money? Was it women? Until the very end, no one admitted nor confirmed the reason why the lead singer (LS) just decided to call it quits. LS himself has an interesting history in the music scene. He was originally the lead singer of another band and for a time, he quit and disappeared from the scene. As to why LS initially disappeared, well, he was young and fame and temptation were all around him. Rumors had it that he had to “clean up his act.” He then resurrected his career and became more popular with PB. His songs became more meaningful, and he his performance had soul that made his fans love him more.

This time, LS is too passionate and dedicated with performing that nothing can no longer stand in the way of his career. When he was yet with the PB, he got too tired of the lack of discipline of his fellow members. One member (OM) would bring his groupie to the gigs of the band. Even while they had engagements, OM would disappear and hide in the comfort room to take a hit. There were times when the others were obviously high on something. On the other hand,  no one could sway LS to the darker side of rock. Eventually, LS could no longer restrain his band mates, he called it quits and dropped them. LS walked away cleanly and went solo. Now, he enjoys as much fame and no longer has the burden of worrying over band mates who seems to be misdirected. LS has found his niche and he wants to keep it that way.

Enjoining Everyone for Prayers For DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo and Company

Let us all pray for the safe recovery of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo and his companions, including the two pilots of the small aircraft that carried him from Cebu on the way home to Naga. It crashed in the sea of Masbate province afternoon of Saturday. Earlier it was reported that the plane was having some engine problems, but Sec. Robredo and his team proceeded just the same for a meeting in Cebu.

His aide Don Abrasado survived. But Robredo is still nowhere to be found along with the two pilots of the four-seater plane.

Professional divers are doing the rescue, but are being hampered as darkness set in.

Before 8pm, talks circulated that Robredo was rescued by a fisherman, such that family and friends were in jubilation, only to be doused soon after when it was confirmed that it was just a rumor.

Prayer vigils are now being held in La Salle, Greenhills and at the residence of Sec. Robredo in Naga City.

President Benigno Aquino enjoins everyone to offer prayers for the missing Secretary and his companions, including prayers for their respective families for this extremely sad and unfortunate circumstance.
