  1. Kung same spiel lang naman ang mga CSR everyday(or everynight), I am sure they will pronounce it with clarity. It depends. Just my opinion.

    1. It's ok to "sound American" sa accent, wag lang OA sa pa-TWANG. Like totally, y'all. Hahaha!

    2. Y’all is used only in rhe southern states like Texas.

    4. Ako may nakausap na call center agent na Pinoy trying to sound American with a southern twang. Nakakaloka talaga yung usap namin because I knew he was Pinoy, but I think customers cannot ask them to speak Filipino, ganon yata yun. Anyway, it was just such a strange experience for me to speak to a kababayan who sort of garbled English with a southern accent. But to be fair, I was pleased with how accommodating he was, and he also politely repeated himself whenever I asked him to reiterate what he said.

Maybe the Call Centers can give their phone reps speech courses/training to help them succeed on the job. I mean, might as well invest in your people, right?

    5. I spoke to an agent who tried his best to speak with a twang. Finally, I asked him if he's Filipino. He said "opo". He was very excited and we transacted our business in Tagalog. Much was accomplished and my problem was resolved in a timely manner. We spent the rest of our time talking from how's the weather to where in the US do I live. Nice man. Ha ha.

      Delete
    6. oy kung hindi nyo pa rin maintindihan kindly request for an interpreter! hindi gumana yung English di ba, so Tagalog naman.

      Delete
    7. I believe they were taught to speak with accents and pretend they are Americans to prevent racism from Americans..

      Delete
    8. Not all call center allow that po. Yung nagtatagalog.

    9. WOW. COMING FROM HER. A FILIPINA WHO SPEAKS WITH AN AMERICAN ACCENT (AND NO SHE WAS NOT BORN AND RAISED IN THE U.S.) AND WITH A BRITISH ACCENT WHEN SHE WAS 17YO BEING INTERVIEWED IN LONDON (SHE WAS NOT BORN AND RAISED IN THE UK, EITHER). WE ALL HAVE THE RIGHT TO SPEAK THE WAY WE WANT TO. AT KUNG TRYING HARD MAN TAYO, THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT.

I live here in the US and madami talagang mag outsource sa Pinas.

--so walang karapatang mag accent sau ang mga pinoy na based here in PH? dahil nasa US ka? ahmmmmm are you serious?????

      Delete

      Delete
    3. 1:21 slow compre ka. Ikaw siguro yung call center agent noh. haha

      Delete
    4. 1:21 - I agree. And base sa comment ni 12:59 meron pa siyang "nakakatawa", she's implying na full American accent na siya kasi nasa US siya. Malabo ate! Labas pagka-Pinoy niya.

      Delete
    5. 1:21 Hindi yang and ubig sabihin ni 12:59. Nakatira siya sa US so mas nagagamit nya American English twang than Filipinos based here. Mygad utak naman po.

      Delete
    6. 1:21 did I say that?

      Delete
    7. 1:21 hina mo naman maka gets.

      Delete
    8. 1:36 yup! I’m married to an American and my husband doesn’t have an accent. Mas mahirap pa nga intindihin pag Pinoy kausap kasi grabe ang twang ang winter nagiging “winner” lol.

      Delete

      Delete
    10. 1:51 Hindi rin, minsan Lea sounds New Yorker then I saw another interview Californian accent naman.

      Delete
    11. You guys are missing the point!! Tumawag ako minsan pinoy ang call center susmaryosep nasobrahan! Wag na ksing magtwang utang na loob!!

      Delete

Hahaha

      Anong brand kaya nirerep nun?

      Delete

Hahahahaha

      Delete
    15. 1:21 sabi nia nasa US sya so definitely dapat mas may american accent sya compare sa call center agent. un lang un na totoo naman! ung mga pinoy sa US hindi naman ganyan magsalita pero pag nagbalik bayan puro slangan ang alam hahaha....

      Delete
Yung iba kala mo may Southern Accent pa. Wag kami! wag!

      Delete
Ugh! So frustrating!

    5. bawal, may supervisor sila.

      Delete
    6. Baka nasa protocol nila na only English. Minsan napa isip ako, bakit yung mga Hispanic pwede mag Spanish on the phone, pero yung gusto magtagalog hindi pwede? Napaka broken system naman nyan!!

      Delete

      Delete
    8. Yeah every time I get sales calls I feel bad for the agents. Most of the time they were having a hard time conversing. One time I tried talking to an agent in Tagalog but he said he’s not allowed. Poor kid.

      Delete
    9. The accent should be neutral not american

      Delete
    10. 2:01, see 1:53's comment. Tama ang napaka broken na sistema. Dapat allowed mag Tagalog if allowed ang Spanish, diba? Bilingual is better kasi baks.

      Delete

      Delete
    12. ndi allowed ksi recorded yung phone conversation at dun yta sila inievaluate

      Delete

      Delete
    14. The agents are required to only is English.

      Delete
    15. Nasa US kayo so English and Spanish lang talaga ang required din.

      Delete
    17. You will never understand unless you have worked in the industry. American accent or neutral accent is encouraged from day one you start training. And you cant speak tagalog if youre working for an internatioanl client unless they would allow you to do so kahit na hirap na hirap na sa pag iingles ung kausap mong pinoy sa kabilang linya you still have to respond in english.

      Delete
GODBLESS YOU MADAM LEA.

    1. OMG. Ikaw yung CSR noh? LOL... Paano ba yan? Customer is very important, you know girl!?

      Delete
    2. Wala syang sinabi about accent -- she was talking about enunciation. Ang point nya eh don't try too hard to sound American, but try harder to enunciate and make your words clear, regardless of accent

      Delete
    3. You obviously don't get her point. What's she trying to imply is... speak clearly without the fake accent. There is nothing wrong with our accent. Some people think that if they speak like the Americans their English is better... which is obviously not true. No accent is correct. Native speakers of English from different parts of the world have different accents.

      Delete
    4. kaya nga gusto nia icorrect. pano mag-iimprove kung walang nagbibigay ng feedback? wag masiado balat sibuyas

      Delete
    5. Asus I don’t think mayabang sya in this case. Minsan talaga nakaka frustrate makipag usap at kinakain mg mga Pinoy ang words and too th to sound American.

      Delete
    6. Bakz nilaglag ba yun? Ganun?

      Delete
    7. Why take it so personally? Have an open mind at isipin na kaya pa nating mag improve. I don’t see it as bringing down another fellow Filipino, more like constructive criticism.

      Delete

      Delete
    9. sure ako pag check mo ng IG or FB profile neto, may verse from the bible to, typical hater lang. hindi mo na gets ang point ni ateng Lea. maypa GODBLESS ka pang nalalaman.

I think Pinoy call center agents should emulate Lea's. I really don't have an issue with Filipino call center agents. I feel that that industry has grown into the biggest employer of Filipins because of the English speaking abilities of Pinoys. If American companies chose Pinoys, why be choosy and judgmental. My only beef with Filipino English speakers is the use of "maam, sir, actually, though, in fairness". Those are just what are at the top of my head right now, pero marami pang words and phrases that has been " bastardized" by TH mag English Pinoys.

    ReplyDelete
  13. LOL guys chill lang. ako sa call center industry ako and nagcacalls din ako dati, gets ko naman ang point nya which is CLEAR dapat, na tama naman talaga. Hindi naman nya sinabi na mali grammar or something, ngcocoach ako ng reps before and yes dapat naman talaga clear ka magsalita, hindi kailangan mg try hard maging american accent kasi, if you can pull it off why not db? She’s a customer and from a customer’s perspective she has the right to complain about the things that a rep could’ve done better. Hindi naman nya minura o ano man yung rep. Wag butthurt yung iba.

And anon 1:00 yes naghahanap buhay lang tao, lahat naman tayo but let’s do our job properly naman. Reps should be open to feedback like that, if you can’t then find another job na ma pplease ka. #KThanksBye :)

  14. Protocol din kasi sa call center na to sound american kaya they are just following it and obviously may sasablay dahil pinoy tayo at hindi kano. Kaya very nitpicking lang ang rant nitong hambog na tita leah with an h. In all honesty manipis ang boses nya, klaro pero manipis hence not perfect kaya get off your high horse! Nakakagalit!

    3. Maybe sa Pinas protocol yon. Kasi I talked to a lot of Indians CSRs di naman sila th to sound like an American. They speak with an accent which is expected since Di naman sila dito sa US nakatira.

    4. Her snooty attitude stems from her achievements. I bet you are tita leah and nairita ka sa comment kong manipis boses mo. Everyone is entitled to critique but you have the choice either to be still nice or downright dismissive and she chose the latter. Yun yung prob!

    5. No, no, no. Ang tinuturo sa training ay tamang pagbigkas ng words hindi yung mag sound American.

  16. In defense of Filipino call center agents, compared to those that are from India, the Filipino CSAs are more courteous and charming. Those from India are mostly snotty. It's just the Filipinos who notice the put on accent. Most Caucasians don't take notice instead they think it is an accent. I am not a CSA marami lang akong encounters with them and I don't mind their accents or their put on American accent what is important to me are these things: courtesy, humor and patience, knowledge of the product I call about and ability to resolve the issue.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Caucasians do notice. My husband is American and oftentimes sasabihin nya sa akin na Filipino or Indian kausap nya.

    2. yep caucasians CAN tell.

    3. I'm Filipino residing in Pennsylvania and I can tell! But I don't really mind as long as clear ang CSR in his/her way of speaking. Just like what Lea meant. Anyway, in defense of Pinoy CSRs, I also get lots of really good ones! I couldn't even tell at first until he/she starts to use old and formal conversational English words. Medyo di kasi updated ang mga Pinoy sa casual conversation skills and the latest US domestic affairs news. Yung tinatawag na "slang" dito, which is iba ibig sabihin sa Pinas lol. Slang in the US means contemporary, informal language or lingo, not the way of pronouncing words. Anyway, we all hate robocalls and other sales pitches by live agents, kaya it doesn't matter whatever accent it was made!

      Delete
    4. Whatever freaking language you use as long as you convey the message properly.

*bow*

  32. Same concern kay leah.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ako here in the US bihira lang ko maka encounter ng pinoy na di maintindihan english, Indian pa. Yes, they are trying hard hard to make an American accent maybe because some American people will freak out knowing that the tech support is on the other side of the world and not locally present. I know there is that kind of issue. Filipinos are the most courteous, patient customer support I have experienced and for that they're doing their job really well, that's what I'm proud of.

  34. I've been in the industry for 10 years now. Kahit neutral accent ako, I make sure I enuciate words correctly coz that way, maint8ndihan ka talaga. at Yan din Ang tinuturo ko sa mga bago. P3ro Yung iba, exactly the way Lea described ---Medyo off talaga.

  35. Dito sa Uk mostly Indian minsan Hirap kaya intindihin daming Rrrrr Pag ng sasalita

  36. What's with the "American Accent" anyway? American's accent carries from State to State. How about, The British accent which also varies from place to place, Australian, New
    Zealand, Canada, South Africa...
There's more to it than just the accent. Go to courtrise that were colonised by the British Empire. They speak English just like a native speaker but they have their own accent. Does it matter? No, it doesn't. It matters only to the dimwitted who think accent is the be all and end all.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am a csr myself, and kahit ako naiistress sa mga kasama kong pilit iniiba yung accent. Actually mas maiintindihan nga pag natural lang yung pageenglish.

  39. And point blank, the fact that she's so certain of one's ethnicity by tone of voice just shows she's ridiculous. -- There's a reason why people tweet instead of writing great novels and books. Her pseudo attempt at intellectualism via twitter is her greatest accomplishment these days.

    4. 7:34 am - lol @ your thinly-veiled attempt to imply that she's discriminating against the agent's ethnicity. stop being obtuse - accents, most of the time, can be an accurate indicator of where the person has lived/stayed the longest. stop putting malice in her observation. dadagdagan mo pa eh ang linaw naman na hindi yung pagiging pilipino ng agent problema niya, kundi yung kung paano hindi niya maintindihan yung sinasabi nung tao, lalo na't the agent's line of work heavily relies on delivering informative messages to their clients CLEARLY & EFFECTIVELY.

      Delete
    5. D nga valid gnawa nya eh. What good will it give her sa pagpopost nya nyan?

Next time, point out mo yung reason kung bakit ganun, and to avoid confusion. Ganyan.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Training for CSR should sound neutral. Not American nor British.

    ReplyDelete

I was there during that time, hindi lang ako umimik. Fast forward one day, dumating siya sa office at ako ang na sa harapan, I confronted her sabi ko hindi ba obvious na Asian ako so bakit ka pa nagtataka? At sabi na from Poland siya at iba din ang accent niya, so ang sagot ko well we have to suck it up and try to understand each other. Tapos I asked her if she ever visited the Philippines before because if she will in the future people there will never bash her accent nor discriminate her as a person. Natameme ang loka.

But there's this one call center agent based sa Cebu I talked to while I tried to book a flight/hotel, sobrang galing niya, very impressive yung english niya, akala ko kana, bisaya pala, but she was really good.

  54. Kelangan mo ring mag American accent somehow kse onetime may kausap akong American and I have this neutral accent di nya ma gets until I did it the slang way.

Lol.

12.14 may point sana si leah pero sorry wala siyang point dahil gusto niyang ipahinto sa kanila yong pagtwang nila which is not a good idea dahil American mostly ang mga customers ng mga ito.

  55. mas maasakit lalo pag di clear snasbai tapos wrong pronunciation. yung kawork ko nga sabi nya sa Illinois "Ilinoys" well in fact mas matagal na sya sakin sa BPO industry, nagulat lang ako. d ko alam kng pano ko sya icocorrect kasi halos 10 years gap namin, so sinabi ko nalang sa OIC namin.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Sana rin, Pag may nag bibigay ng feedback, di unahin isipin yung bad agad. Lea raised some valid points naman din. I'd like to think she meant to give the comment para mag improve nga ang mga kailangan ayusin yun ganitong gawa.

    ReplyDelete
  57. This validates once again kung gaano kayabang si lea. She really have to tweet this sa inis nya? I-point out pa sa tweet how pinoys are trying to sound americans.

    ReplyDelete
There's no way for them to know the race of their customer right? So sana intindihin nalang ni leah kasi malay niya na baka hindi lang maganda ang reception during that time or baka nabulol lang yong agent. Isa pa ang mag-TH is a must sa pinasukan nilang work for their american customers. So why laglag your own kababayan? Filipino way nga naman oh. Tsk! Tsk! Tsk!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Wow ha, dissing kapwa pinoy for doing her job. Call center agents are required to speak and as much as possible, sound like an American but with neutral accent. Palibhasa you didn't have to do that to feed your self and family. Will it hurt to just keep your mouth shut for once?

    ReplyDelete
