Another Painful Story of a Failing Business

Every so often, stories about the ups and downs of celebrities are either inspiring or frustrating. Most viewers love watching how a small player rises from being a nobody to one that is famous and respected. One sector that is full of such stories is the fashion and beauty industry. Most of today's successful beauty experts began from the lowest of ranks and moved up because of hard work and celebrity endorsements.

This hairstylist icon (HI) began her career with help from a family member. Unlike other stylists, HI was studying in a university when she realized she had the talent for making people beautiful with her scissors. While working in a salon, HI eventually started earning recognition for her name and the salon in the mid 80s. HI became quite famous and celebrities flocked to the family-owned salon. HI gave back to the community by establishing a school and imparting her knowledge through hair clinics.

Business was booming then. However, things did not turn out for the best. Sometime ago, HI bought a mansion in an exclusive subdivision and lived a lifestyle fit for her status. Then, business became bad. Other salons and hairstylists came into the picture. Added to this development is the proliferation of salons that offered cheaper rates. Hence, the business of HI suffered. Coupled with a lavish lifestyle and a failing business, HI had to choose. Out of the six branches, three were closed down because rent could not be paid. Then, the employees started to receive their salaries late, and their contributions were not remitted to the SSS. The turn of events is quite sad because the welfare of the employees was compromised. Perhaps, HI can live a less lavish life, and adjust to the times. Although, HI is an established name, there are younger and more creative talents in the industry who can very well be her competition and cut into her business.

Do you know who HI is? Please abide by the RULES in writing comments if you want me to post them. Initials and comments that are too explicit will not be accepted.

Finally, my mom switched to Basement Salon. After more than 2 years na wala kaming naririnig from them kagulat biglang may tumawag from SdM nagffollow up daw kung gusto magpa sched ng haircut kay *** sabi ng mommy ko tatawag na lang siya for an appointment pero hindi na talaga siya interested. My mom told me this and I remember us talking na siguro wala ng cliente. Very unprofessional kasi, weeks in advance na naka set yung appointment then last minute magccancel. Masyado kasi nila pinaboran ang mga VIP celeb clients, hindi naman yun ang bubuhay sa kanila kundi yung mga loyal customers sana. So asan na ngayon mga celeb clients nila?

  68. I jus saw her at S&R & wondered how she is! She used to be so busy! It takes a month to get an appointment with her if u can even get one! She shouldve diversified or rebranded her salons or something. Sayang

  69. ahhhhh yung dating... "Starting off in an apartment unit with three styling chairs in Banawe Street",and "now have 6 posh branches around the metro and have grown into one of the country's most respected beauty brands." aba... apparently nagsara na ang iba. hahaha kaloka. hindi ito si RR or si Funny S. Magaling naman sila sa negosyo. hahaha si Creative director ng S ito. sad.

  70. I used to have my hair done in their Greenbelt branch. Magaling kung sa magaling pero at a certain point, I had to be more practical by switching to a more affordable salon na magaling din naman. Times are hard and I decided to adjust based on my priorities. In fairness to P. and SM, they were like the trendsetters in the salon industry before. Sayang na they weren't able to adjust with the new changing habits of their market. I hope they stay afloat and survive even during these hard times, P. is very talented and her team are very professional and well-trained. Sayang ang pinaghirapan kung magsasara lang. :(

    ReplyDelete
  73. so sad, kahit mahal ang haircut at other services, you can see a BIG difference with your hair and aura! ang problem kasi, marami sya contract stars na inaayusan (at lahat yun for free and top of the line products ang gamit nya) at baka kunti lang yung nagpapahaircut sa kanila. i love SDM esp the T. Morato branch....

  74. Those of you who have guessed it was P a of S, you are 100% correct! I have known them for many years and they are really good people, they are thoughtful and brilliant all at the same time. Unfortunately, all humble beginnings have tough times to handle. Difficult life changing decisions had to be made and these are where they are weak at some point.

Regarding their downfall, you are all wrong in thinking they never saw it coming. For sure they know what will really strike them – small/mid-size business entrepreneurs, new talents, new skill set, younger and more of the edge designers/creative hair cutters, etc. I believe they are aware of those. So scratch that point, thats not even half of the reason.

Their fault lies only on the neglect they established towards their "workhorse" (employees) and the over-spending they developed for themselves, wherein their employees should've been their priority in the first place. I believe, having your workers stand on the topmost tower over the benefit yard would make them feel loved and privileged, giving back loyalty and utmost support for the company and owners alike. If this has been the biggest part of the employers/owners career walk, maybe, they won't even have the slightest idea of what a downfall or bankruptcy would feel.

A simple gesture – give updates on SSS, Pag-ibig etc., annual increase, health benefit/insurance, incentives, commissions, trainings/seminars, career enhancement, etc. Anything focused on the welfare of employees would give them a boost in not just moral, but the company's overall market status. If this has been the case, I'm sure, we will all tell a different story today, but sadly, the turn of events were even worse than what we can imagine.

This is a simple case of mis-management. Saying the "employees were robbed" is a very harsh thing to say, but in reality, they are really in that state. They get delayed salaries, sometimes even installment/staggered payouts, etc. But the owners come in office driving their brand new cars, clothes, jewelries, gadgets, etc. Thus having delayed rentals, unpaid suppliers, pending loans here and there, and so on. With this as a regular practice, bankruptcy is inevitable, do you agree?

See the picture? Is it balanced?

This is a lesson for all of us. Let us all consider others before we put ourselves forward. Let us all get the best of what this world has to offer, take note – every single one of us has to get the benefit, and keep the balance. Do not cry over greed as it may take a toll on you someday..

    IMHO

    --Positive view

    ReplyDelete
  75. I know them for many years and they were really good people. They were caring and down to earth, especially during their humble beginnings. Unfortunately, things changed when they tasted the first bite of success.

We all know that success is our ultimate goal in life, but this would only give a sense of fulfillment if we share it. Simply put, try not to ask yourself this question– "Do I have enough in my pocket?" ask this instead, "Do you have enough in your pocket?" It would give us not only the happiness we deserve, but also the ultimate success of having to share your pedestal with the people you work with.

I hope and pray that they get through with this peacefully as I know God has a purpose for everything. It may be that God is trying to teach them something or that they may have neglected something that God has ordained for them to accomplish.

    --A more positive view :)

  76. Oh boy, I feel bad reading this story. i know the people behind the salon and they are really good and kind. I believe what really happened is a case of mis-management. Overspending beyond what your business can provide. When it should be Income - Savings = Expenses. Sa kanila, it is Income - Expenses = Savings. Kung meron pang savings to begin with. Everything is just really so wrong. I hope it's not yet late for them. I pray to God that they recover. They are good people and hope all is not lost. from a Client from way back
