Movie Review: Love Me Tomorrow

Cast: Piolo Pascual, Dawn Zulueta, Coleen Garcia
Director: Gino Santos
Rating: PG
Produced by: Star Cinema

The movie is a romantic light drama that delves into the love journey of three generations. There are issues which are real and happening but owing to their sensitive nature, are rarely discussed. They are in fact often labeled as taboo.

"Love Me Tomorrow" is a generational love story of its three lead characters. JC (Piolo Pascual) is a man who, at 35 still leads a happy- go-lucky life as a DJ (disc jockey), Janine  (Coleen Garcia), a young socialite blogger who covers up her life’s emptiness through all night partying, and Christy (Dawn Zulueta) as a desirable  50-year old widow whose success as a fashion designer leaves a kind of void that needed filling up.

Taking center stage as well are the Tita’s of Manila (a spoof of the social culture of mostly middle-class aunts in Manila) composed of Carmi Martin and friends who love clubbing and partying and yes, dating men.

Liberated Carmi invites Dawn to her group and urges her to have a second chance at life (read: love life) after being recently widowed. The movie presents the supposedly conservative Christy going and playing along with the very much married but flirty Carmi’s kind of fun.

As if on cue, JC meets the beautiful Christy in a not-so-pleasant accidental encounter. As these accidental encounters become more frequent, their careers intertwine in the process, along with Janine’s who was previously JC’s friend (with benefits).

Unknowingly, despite of, or maybe because of their age difference, JC and Christy  begin falling for each other amidst conflict brought in by Janine who is still very much into JC. As if to assuage Christy’s fears, JC assures her that Janine is no more than a  ‘fubu’  (fuck buddy) as he labels it – but in reality is a no-label connection.

Christy tries to be circumspect but love wins for her and JC…for a while. Sure JC knows which buttons to press to endear himself to her even more. What can be more charming than making Christy’s favorite song his audition piece for a DJ in her upcoming fashion launch.

The movie’s concept is supposedly a refreshing one for Dawn whose comedic timing is quite commendable. Her silly scenes with Piolo and Carmi are a natural. Unfortunately, the plot comes off as weak, with pacing and editing that leave the audience confused at times, notably in most of its dramatic scenes.

Some scenes would have created more impact had they been better thought of in terms of execution and delivery. The effort is there, but it's clearly not enough.

As a whole, "Love Me Tomorrow" is a good enough vehicle for Dawn to try a different track at this point in her career. But just like her role in the movie, her image should not be compromised. Her fans may not be ready for it yet. Indeed, age should not limit you to do what you want - but with responsibility.

Meanwhile, it can't be denied that Coleen's acting has matured in terms of depth. Her looks is a much-appreciated bonus, a refreshing, natural beauty.

As for Piolo, he needs to be more convincing in his dramatic scenes, most of which come off as unnatural. But in the looks department, the hunk is as desirable as ever without even trying, always a visual treat for girls and gays alike.

By the way, the MTRCB is quite lax in giving this movie a PG rating with all those sexy scenes and language fit only for adult consumption.

"Love Me Tomorrow" also stars Freddie Webb, Maxene Magalona, Anna Abad Santos, now showing in cinemas.

  4. I just watched it. It was really Dawn's movie. Her character was well-developed and consistent and the most likeable. Very much like the Diane Keaton role in Something's Gotta Give :) I think people of Dawn's generation will appreciate this movie.

Too old to play pa-cute roles and too young to do daddy roles. Best for him to do what Hollywood actors do -- either do theatre or stage work , or just take a break from showbiz and reinvent himself. His fans want something new or exciting from him, so he should surprise them once in a while ;-) FOR THE LOVE OF xxx

  9. May nakalimutan pa nga silang i-reveal or at least isama. I mean what about the 'kuya' of Piolo's character?

  10. Piolo is not a good actor. Overacting masyado. Di natural. Overmodulated ang boses. Typical pinoy style ang acting. Yung di mo naman gagawin at makikita in real life. Conscious na conscious ang dating.

    7. I'm not an avid fan of Piolo but it's unfair to say that he is not a good actor. Acting is subjective, overacting or underacting man ito. I may not like Piolo's acting in some movies but he was a grandslam best supporting actor for Dekada '70 & box-office & best actor award for Starting Over Again. This is a usual romcom movie of Star Cinema so don't expect to use "Chubbuck Acting Technique" and be recognized sa Cannes or Oscars.

    1. Good thing this was mentioned. Piolo is overhyped as an actor. He's not good.

Lahat conscious sa voice, movement, angle. Parang on-cam Piolo lanf but not the real person. Parang takot may makita sa kanya.

    2. True. Ayaw mahalata kasi.

    3. Add mo pa ang "hehehehehehe" niya when doing interviews. Daig pa ang Goin Bulilit sa pabebe. May lalaki ba talaga na ganyan? Parang ikaw ang nahihirapan for him when he speaks because he really tries to modulate his voice para kunwari macho.

    4. Iisa lang nagcocoment nitong thread nato. Obviously hater ka ni piolo. Notice the time the comment were posted. 6. @3:10 At ikaw? Sinasagot lahat ng comment on Piolo. 'Tard much? Just because our comment is different from yours, nega na? Go beyond his looks and you'll see na after Dekada, most of his roles just capitalized on his looks.

    7. 3:10AM, what's your point? If the succeeding comments have the same point, SAME PERSON lang ang gumawa? You are not the only person who watches Pinoy movies, teleseryes and showbiz in general.

Some viewers point out the same thing because it's already obvious na ganun talaga siya. If not for the Star Magic, i don't think may control ang mga issues about him too. Hello!

Plus his acting, same lang talaga. Generic and pabebe.

    1. She did the most with what she was given.

Saka may internation screening pa sila.

  23. You're not alone 5:11, I have to agree with you. In general, Piolo is a mediocre actor with moments of brilliance lang. A good actor is someone who can give justice to any role, small or big. Hindi yung depende sa role because it means dependent ka lang dun which is not the true measure of a great actor. For the most part, P's acting is self-conscious and you would see him rather than the character he portrays. He stays relevant because of his looks.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Exactly. Some tards just can't accept the reality that Piolo has never really improved with his acting skills. There are other actors who can deliver, but since hindi sila si "Papa P", deadma lang sila. Haha!

    3. His acting is very forced. Ginagaya nya other Pinoy actors na OA din umarte like Christopher de Leon. Pero other people view their acting as superb. We have our own standards. Di sila pumasa sa taste ko. Eventhough one needs to act sa camera, dapat ang acting natural na happening in real life. That's acting for me. Meron namang OA like in comedy films.

      Delete
Kaya nga each role dapat meron research at pinag aaralan ng mabuti.

Have you seen the movie titled "24/7" na gumanap syang 35 yrs. old na isip bata? ang galing nya kaya dun.
