    2. Yung iba nga hindi nakikinig eh...natutulog. Hahaha but seriously, I agree with Sen. Miriam. Public servants should lead modest lives. They should leave the red carpet and the shameless display of bling blings and whatnots to the people from showbiz. Yung iba yata nag iimagine na nasa oscars or cannes sila. Since people have different interpretations of "formal wear", some tend to go overboard so to avoid that, mag uniform na lang ng halimbawa simple and decent terno for the ladies and barong tagalog for the men.

tama naman siya, why the ostentatious garbs when a big part of the population live in squalor. dapat live by good example ang mga politicians, e hinde, most like flaunting their ill-gotten wealth as if thumbing their noses at the constituents. kakahiya kayo!

    5. I AGREE 100% with you Senator M. Santiago. Thank you for pointing out our observations here in Toronto. We had discussed (group of Filipino nurses, NOT room nurses) the outfits worn when we saw the SONA aired on ABS=CBN. We were all disappointed of the grandeur the wives/girlfriends presented themselves as if they were attending a royal wedding/OSCARS.... leave the glam to showbiz people please... FYI we were all disgusted of the air of arrogance..... thanks FP for letting me air our concern...

  11. Well the Media is also partly to blame. I mean, hello, if they did not report it (or post it on blogs like it was a best-dressed competition) do you really think people will notice and do we rrally think attendees would be that vain if they knew no one cared.

If only people had the utmost respect for the event, treating it for what it is and not some gala event.

    3. Try to answer this... Worth it ba? Sapalagay mo? At para saan ba ang SONA? Susyalan nalang ba? Is that a social event? Buti sana kung lahat sila maraming nagawa eh kaso most of them wala man nagawa diba? So do you think worth it ba?

Media dictates and controls what to think!

They are just there to cover the event e kung talagang attention getter ang mga yon ofcourse mahahagip ng camera yun kasi PUBLIC PERSON sila. We are smart enough to scrutinize a certain thing, kung nagpapadala ka sa media it only shows you are not a smart viewer. MEDIA reflects the SOCIETY, and SOCIETY reflects MEDIA.

  21. much ado about nothing...she should think of something else, get more creative on how to solve the problem of unemployment in the Philippines, instead of critiquing unnecessarily the attire of government officials that attended the event...there are other things more important than that surely..TO EACH HIS OWN...others like to wear blings and designer gowns, let them be...there are more important issues to highlight, don't make such a big deal of such an unimportant stuff, unless one is jealous of course...designer gowns and blings don't make a plain person pretty to look at after all....the basics don't change, do they?

    13. I'm so sorry to burst your bubble dear, but this woman has done more for the country than these people you are so adamant in defending. If you think noticing the extravagance of these politicians is nothing, then I pity how you view the world. Also, it is not entirely up to the senator to come up with solutions for the country's problems, maybe you should address your suggestions to them, so they could focus their energies on something more worthwhile other than looking pretty during the SONA. By the way, to a public servant, the phrase "to each his own" does not apply especially in this case.

Lastly, Miriam Defensor Santiago is far from being plain. When a person has to resort to throwing insults in an argument, then they know they have lost. That's what you just did.

      I rest my case.

  31. I beg to disagree. Kahit naman siguro sino, would really try to look their best lalo na sa okasyon nato. I mean, if I were a senator, I would of course buy myself a decent gown na kaya kong bilhin to look my best. As long as they are doing their jobs, kahit pa naka designer gowns sila, their looks shouldn't matter. I mean, kung metro aide ka, basta ba nalilinis mo ang kalsada, wapakels if nakadesigner jeans ka diba. Or if senador ka, kung di ka makakaafford ng mamahaling gowns as long as may napatunayan ka, fab or drab, only your accomplishments should matter and count.

Sona yan hndi fashion show

    6. atey wag mo isisi sa kanila ang kahirapan. hindi lahat ng politicians e corrupt. minsan kakulangan sa disiplina ang problema. yung mga nagrereklamo na mahirap ang buhay nila, mnsan wala nmn tlga silang gngwang hakbang para umasenso. tska kung may problema kau sa politicians e d sana d niu ibinoto. as simple as that. We accept the government we think we deserve.

Onli in d pilipins talaga!

    8. You are missing the point. It is SONA, not the Oscars.

      Delete
Nakalagay ba doon na party yon? or fashion show?

      Delete
    10. Whilst I understand your point, I also beg to disagree. First and foremost, the SONA is not a social event, it is the President updating the public about the country's status. They were there to listen to him just like everyone else. For years now, those invited to the SONA have made it a norm to be in their grandest attires. Of course, if you were to be there and knew that this was the case then you'd have to go with the flow, right? That's just sad because they have totally forgotten the real purpose of being there.

By the way, your analogy is really off the mark, a metro aide in a designer outfit would make one think, where did he get the funds to support such indulgence?

      Delete
  32. clap clap for Sen Miriam! they are attending SONA in their capacity as public servant so govt officals and guests can dress formally but not too magarbo. save their gowns and blings for their private parties.

    ReplyDelete
  33. finally! the sona should be all about the president's report on what he has done, and what he plans to do...it's not an awards show...public servants should have a simple lifestyle...to focus on the designer clothes, make-up, hairdo, etc. would be similar to covering up the stuff that really matters...i'm beginning to like miriam...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Dati na namang ganyan nung panahon pa ni Cory dahil special event or occasion kaso nung ginawa lang ng media like Hollywood na tinatanong who are you wearing duon na nagsimula. Dati kasi me mga motif na talaga like barot Saya or indigenous culture dress.

  35. Sisihin ang media na yan....

    1. It's not the media to be blamed. Media is there to cover the event kasi it's about our nation.

STATE OF THE NATION ADDRESS nga eh. Magbibigay lang ng info about sa lagay ng Pilipinas sa loob ng ilang minuto or more than an hour naka todo porma pa? Come on hindi naman ito awards night or whatever na may makukuhang award ang pinaka magandang damit.

      Delete

    ReplyDelete
  40. It's a formal event, of course these politicians want to look good. What's wrong with that. It's like going to a wedding where you must dress properly. What did you want them to wear, jeans? Tshirts? Only the president has a right to wear something formal? And why blame the faith of the philippines on the politicians alone? I think the people have alot to do with it. There are alot of jobs here and abroad but people choose to be bums. They choose to stay at home, gamble, and reproduce.

    1. wearing something decent/nice is very different from wearing something extravagant, worth thousands of pesos...the people here who are agreeing with miriam are simply saying that the FOCUS of the sona coverage should not be about "which dress are you wearing?"...they're not putting all the blame on the politicians, but these "representatives of the people" are on the spotlight-so they have to act like role models...all the pageantry won't hide the fact that the country is still 3rd world..

    4. It's Pinoy mentality ang patalbugan. But this display can become very vulgar when these politicians and their wives wear very expensive gowns and jewelry considering that the poverty level in the Philippines is very high. It's like eating lechon in front of very hungry people. Besides, it begs the question kung pera ba ng bayan ang ginamit for all the blings.

    5. As what you have said, they should dress "properly". The SONA has become an avenue for most of them to display opulence which is unnecessary. Know your purpose.

At sa mga ibang commenters yes, true, to each his own, kung afford nila at galing sa bulsa nila pero ang event ay STATE Of The Nation. Show some sensitivy naman sa nakararaming naghihirap.

Ewan ko sa mga pinoy... she should have won the presidency over Ramos. Mas bet ko sya noon pa man!

  58. Go Miriam! Run for President!

  59. Tama si Sen. Mirriam ginawa kasi nilang awards night yung SONA..

  66. I do agree with what she said. Nawawalang saysay na ang ang ibig sabihin ng SONA dahil sa pag fafashion show ng mga asawa if not the politicians themselves. Ginagawa nilang kkaktawanan an pilipinas. Whats sad is that, t be politicians themselves are the form of mockery. I dont even wonder kung bakit di uunlad ang pilipinaa...

    ReplyDelete
  68. YES!!!! mas masahol pa sa fashion show and SONA.

    ReplyDelete
  69. YES! Nada divert kasi yung attention and yung real essence of the event because ginagawa nilang parang ball yung SONA better na uniform nalang than kanya kanya. And less gastos pa for them din kasi for sure thousands ang ginagastos coz sa mga well-known designers nila pinapagawa yan---tapos they're just going to wear that for 1 or 2 hours o diba laking gastos. I share nalang nila yun nakatulong pa sila sa iba or they could use that into something else like their business, worth it pa.

  73. I totally agree with the senator, I too, thought, when I saw a photo gallery on who wore what at the SONA, that it became similar to a social gathering of the rich and famous garbed in their very best, it makes one think, were they there to support the president's achievements and hear where our country is at right now or just to be SEEN? Whatever happened to the simple filipinianas and barongs that everyone used to wear? Senator Miriam Santiago may sound like a total party pooper and a kill-joy for pointing this out, but then again, at times, somebody brave needs to do the dirty job of putting these high and mighties in their places. So I applaud the good senator for speaking her mind, you have earned admiration points from a lot of people yet again.

  74. True enough, the President's State of the Nation Address should not be viewed and treated as an Oscar Awards' Night. Sabihin nating KJ si Ka Miriam, but I don't see anything WRONG in her statement. As a matter of fact, I do admire her formality when it comes to attire.

  75. I totally agree with Sen. Miriam's recommendations. Simple and use what is Filipino.

  76. It's an event so people dressed up. They sit (or sleep) most of the session days kaya naman ayan, given the chance, nagpabonga naman sila. At least for the women, right naman nila magpaganda and wear beautiful dresses, after all you can't just go there in jeans right? Their fault is probably name-dropping. Once you know the designer, of course you'll start thinking of the price.

    ReplyDelete

  80. dressing one's self is a form of self expression. C'mon, comment on this FP readers. I can almost feel your blood boiling.
