MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - Filipinos still need to get a visa to visit Japan, contrary to a report circulating on the internet.

On Thursday, the Japanese embassy issued a statement denying it had removed visa requirements for Filipinos.

"The Embassy of Japan in the Philippines would like to clarify to the public that Japan has not lifted the visa exemption for the Philippines contrary to the recent reports. However, Japan has opened multiple-entry Visas to Filipinos," it said.
Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on June 25 saying it is granting multiple entry visas for Filipino citizens, valid for three years.

"In celebration of the 40th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, the Government of Japan has decided to begin issuance from July 1, of multiple entry visas for short-term stay to nationals of the Republic of the Philippines (ordinary passport holders) who reside in their home country," the MOFA said on its website.

Granting multiple entry visas is expected to increase the number of Filipino tourists who visit Japan.

The MOFA said Filipinos who have fulfilled certain conditions and who have an ordinary Machine-Readable passport (MRP), which meet International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards or an ordinary IC passport, may get a multiple entry visa.

With the visa, Filipinos may stay for 15 days in Japan. The multiple entry visa will be valid for up to three years.

Filipino netizens were abuzz about a report that erroneously indicated Japan granted visa exemptions to the Philippines and four other ASEAN countries.

However, Japan only granted visa exemptions to nationals of Thailand and Malaysia.

Filipinos who are interested in getting a visa to Japan should apply at the Japanese embassy through accredited agencies. The Japanese embassy in the Philippines does not accept direct visa applications.

  8. How unfair would that be? They should have visa to get her too to make it fair in celebration of our friendship with them. Isn't that a great present for them?

    1. As much as that sounds fair in an ideal world, di natin afford maggigpit against them. We need tourists to come here.

  9. It all boils down to money. The more visa application, the higher the revenue! Economics 101. Reality bites.

    1. I don't think so, maybe the money / economy is one of the reason but DEFINITELY NOT the FIRST, the first and foremost reason is pinoys will flock to japan or US kung walang visa restriction, eh kung ako rin naman ang mga first world country, why accept them, MAJORITY are in low socio economic status, so they will compete for job and if they don't find jobs they will be a burden to society and will live on tax payers money ( na obviously they don't pay), in short , pabigat

  10. As a Filipino expat here in Tokyo, I understand why they haven't waived the visa to us. Dami kase TNt rito na Pinoy, although in fairness to us, di naman tayo ang pinakamarami. Acc to data, #1 TNT dito mga Koreans, #2 Chinese then tayo... Yang mutplie entry visa na yan'pampalubag loob' lang yan, but the requirements/rigidity to be granted a visa are still the same. There's no harm in trying ika nga.. Go lang nang go! I am just wondering why visas are waived for Thai and Malaysian nationals. Are they any better than us?

  19. At least mas maluwag n sila. Early this year I was granted a single entry visa which was only valid for 3 months. So, kung hindi k natuloy for whatever reason within that 3 months, apply k ulit.

  21. and you think the visa requirement will stop/deter pinoys from finding a way to circumvent the restriction and be able to work and stay there for a long time (or until gets caught)? you can say a lot of things about us pinoys, but we're the most resilient in figuring out a way to get to another country. granted it's getting harder now with info shared amongst the countries, pero watch mo, somebody will find a way and make money from other pinoys.
i guess some countries, they look at us like a swarm of bees, let one in and the whole beehive follows. joke lang po.
