Fact: Top 8 Filipino Twitter Personalities All have Fake (Inactive?) Followers

According to Twitter Audit, all of the Top 8  Most Followed Filipino Celebrity On Twitter have "Fake" followers.  I am however clueless as to how Twitter Audit operationally defines "Fake" followers. I am guessing this refers to the  "Inactive" Twitter accounts.

It is also worth noting that that 7 out of the 8 in the  Most Followed Filipino Celebrity On Twitter list have more "Fake" followers than "Real" ones (@vicegandako has 1.25M "Fake" followers vs. his 1.29M "Real" ones).

I tried my account @FashionPulis and this was the result.
I also tried the Twitter accounts of some of the most famous international public personalities and this was what I got.
Having presented these data, does this mean that Twitter is not an effective marketing tool since many followers are inactive? This is definitely an interesting marketing research study that some of you might want want to delve into (paging my DLSU-Manila Marketing/Advertising graduating students).

Happy Twitter Auditing!!!

  2. If your account is public, you will easily get fake followers.

    1. true, saka me software din para mag regenerate/create followers for you, or you can hire a programmer to do that..
Soooo sayang lungs if pinagbabasehan lagi twitter followers.

Like me, me twitter me and ang dami kong finafollow pero di rin ako nagttweet.. around 20 tweets lang ata mostly pag me raffle lang lol.

    2. Socialbakers identifies fake or empty accounts based on a number of criteria. They include:
•The ratio of following to followers is less than 50:1
•Tweets repeatedly include spam phrases like diet, make money and work from home
•Tweets are repeated more than three times
•More than 90 percent of the account's tweets are retweets
•More than 90 percent of tweets are links and the account has a following to followers ratio of 7:1 or greater.
      •The account has never tweeted

  4. What's the big fuss about twitter and having many followers? If there are 10 milliom filipinos who use twitter, there are 90 million who don't. Seriously, twitter is very much hyped.

Why do you think most of our media practitioners are active on Twitter? It is an effective communication tool, so it should follow that it's also effective for marketing.

      Delete
    2. Communication? Yes. With all the bunch of opinions you can get from there. Marketing? Nah. Very few are using it and most of them are bunch of wannabes. There are professionals, but these people don't really care about advertisements. They would care more about Nat'l news rather than showbiz/lifestyle chu chu. heckler, harold geronimo, people from the press(those who are not from showbiz), are the real influential twitter users because their market are those who can buy especially if the products are expensive.

  14. FP, do you think some of these celebs also bought followers? If you can, why can't they? It's just disappointing because some of them were treated as influential people because of their followers, they're not really influential pala.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, I also suspect celebs bought followers, like those so called fans in the celebs forums. This is like sort of marketing themselves for endorsements.

      Delete
  15. Ha ha! Press releases hah!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. you can change your twitter username pero it still counts as one. hindi ibig sabihin na nagpalit ka ng username you will be counted na as a new follower. if that is what you want, dapat gumawa ka ng bagong account which requires a new email address. imagine kung gaaano kadaming email accounts ang ginawa ng mga fakers para lang umabot sa milyon and followers ng idol nila.

fake or not, they are still followers. kung naging inactive man, nag-abala pa rin sila na i-follow yung celeb at one point. may mga nagcomment dito na they have twitter account pero di sila active. so should they be called fake?

and it happens to everyone, celebrity or not, local or foreign. even obama have fake followers. so what is the big fuzz?

nasa tao na yun kung iko-consider niya ang isang personality as influential based on his/her twitter follower.

    1. i guess for multi national businesses, a massive twitter following is a huge advantage so i can understand if they spend a lot on social media. but i don't see that working for local celebs. our local artistas "buying" twitter followers is just absurd.

      Delete
    3. Yong botohan nga nabibili ano pa kaya itong fake followers. I heard that you can pay 20 dollars to have 10k fake followers. Simply lang siguro kong bakit ginagawa ito nang ibang artista to have fake followers. Gusto nila na mapag usapan sila diba nang yari ito more than a month ago.

  23. haynaku. i always knew this (gut feel) kasi parang i found it preposterous that all abs cbn stars had so many followers kuno tapos sa gma wala? logically pa, people who would use twitter/have access are people with money and honestly, many people with money just won't patronize local celebrities. even the box office records, i'm finding dubious. i watched sisterakas and i'm ASTOUNDED it was number one. it really really reinforced to my husband what he always says about Philippine movies (this after my making so much progress and watching filmworthy movies like doo bi doo, a secret affair, the mistress, temptation island which made me think maybe local movies weren't all that bad). i find it preposterous that anne has so many endorsements i can't even remember anymore which are hers (except for belo and smdc bec those are so visible).

  26. From twitteraudit:

    "About TwitterAudit

Each audit takes a random sample of 5000 Twitter followers for a user and calculates a score for each follower. This score is based on number of tweets, date of the last tweet, and ratio of followers to friends. We use these scores to determine whether any given user is real or fake. Of course, this scoring method is not perfect but it is a good way to tell if someone with lots of followers is likely to have increased their follower count by inorganic, fraudulent, or dishonest means.

TwitterAudit is not affiliated with Twitter in any way."

So sampling ang gamit po using sample size of 5000, a 100% audit for those with followers below 5000. Medyo malaki ang magiging margin of error proportionally with increased number of followers.

  27. I disagree with some commenters who are saying that Twitter is overrated or overhyped. It just hasn't caught on with Pinoy netizens yet. Give it a few more years and it will be big in the Philippines.

  35. I work as a contractor from a freelance platform, and you can't imagine how many ad posts are there looking for a person who can generate thousands of FB Likers, and Twitter followers(Fixed-price for a X number of likers or followers). May software yata sila for that. Pwedeng bots or manual. Madaling trabaho sa mga less skilled freelancers. Bottom line, it's possible.

    1. twitter follows a certain algorithm to determine trending topics. it doesn't necessarily follow na pag maraming nag tweet about a certain topic eh magiging trending na.

and the issue here is about fake followers which i think has nothing to do with trending topics.

    1. every twitter follower is a human being. at least that should be the case. twitter, just like many other websites, placed numerous security features in their registration process to prevent non human bots from creating accounts. one such feature is the need to verify an account using a valid email address.

however, twitter has no way of controlling people who make multiple accounts so dyan pwedeng pumasok yung fake accounts. if only for the effort they have to go through bago makagawa ng twitter account eh hats off na ako sa mga fakers na gumagawa ng multiple accounts para lang mapadami ang followers ng idolo nila.
