Letter from a Reader: Wrong Credit

Assunta de Rossi-Ledesma, 2012 SONA

Assunta de Rossi-Ledesma, 2011 SONA

Dear Fashion PULIS,

I am an aspiring fashion designer. I built my clientele over the years thru referrals without using and hiring any PR to do it for me. I am a one-woman show.

I have no paid advertisement to any form of media except some features in Bridal Magazines. Those were struggling years indeed, that paid off eventually in the end.

It is a great experience and pride to get noticed by celebrities and other high-profile personalities and  get me to make clothes for them.

One of them is my friend Assunta de Rossi - Ledesma who tasked me to create gowns for her for the  SONA 2011 and 2012.

Both gowns were featured in Stylebible.ph, and I was quite proud of that. Being new in the fashion industry, having my creation featured in that fashion magazine was certainly big an achievement.  However an "error" was committed as the dress was credited in favor of Mr. Rajo Laurel.

I hate to think that this is a common practice done by some known and pompous designer towards a fellow designer of my status.

I am sharing this with you so that other designers will be forewarned. This negligence that has not been rectified may cause me to lose opportunities.

Thank you very much, Fashion PULIS for taking the time to accommodate this letter in your blog.

Respectfully yours,
Sheryl Vicente

    3. Hindi naman yata twice in a row. Mukang itong 2012 SONA lang yata ang hindi credited to Sheryl. Correct me if i'm wrong. Although, of course, an apology is definitely in order.

    And Sheryl, nice work!

  16. baka naman they took the picture from somewhere else lang, then stated that it was designed by RL? pero dapat naman nagtanong muna sila lalo na kay Assunta since sya lang naman may alam kung sino ang gumawa ng gown nya.

But still, its the site's fault parin, typo or not. dapat kinontak ni Sheryl ang site before sharing it here, para walang gulo or issue.

  24. Baka naman it's assunta's fault, maybe she gave the wrong name! I don't think it is rajo's fault, i mean, he has nothing to gain from it. It's not like assunta's such a big big superduperstar and designers are dying to design her e.g. Jessica sanchez tipong ganun

  25. Dear AnonymousJuly 27, 2012 12:07 AM - Hindi ito blind item. naitama na ba yung credits? did she email stylebible so they could correct it? i think rajo laurel's voice should be heard, too. because what if he had no place in this "credit mistake" then to point finger at him steadfastly is improper and disrespectful. If this is stylebible editor's, copyrighter's and typers' faults then call their attention and order them to edit it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. actually when I saw Assunta's pic. sabi ko wow this is one of the best dresses that day.. then nakita ko "rajo laurel" sabi ko ah..kaya pala.. YUN PALA someone else (unknown) did it. ibig sabihin HINDI LANG SI RAJO ang TALENTED sa mundong ITO! Sheryl vicente, papagawa ako sayo ng damit!

  31. I checked the pictures, na correct na details. Apology is indeed needed. From what i read above, may mga nakakita na at alam na si rajo nga. So may damage pa din. I googled. CHECK THIS LINK:

  32. Even is the credit has been credited, stylebible should still acknowledge that a mistake was previously committed, why it was committed and apologize for it. More so since Rajo Laurel is PART of stylebible team. He has a blog on that website. In fact, Rajo posted an article about several designs he made for the SONA. Only 1 design "officially" made it to the shortlist.

Again the facts that rajo is a part of stylebible and he benefited from a designer credit for a gown made by another designer...hard to believe the mistake was inadvertent. At the very least, stylebible and rajo owe Sheryl Vicente an apology and explanation.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree. The least stylebible could do is to issue an erratum statement. Kahit sino naman masasaktan pang ung pinaghirapan mo ay ma-credit sa iba.

    2. Very well said, Anon 12:44.

An apology should be issued, regardless of the fact that it was corrected already.

  33. Masakit yan kase pinaghirapan niya ang gown. Kahit honest mistake. But I think it's better if style bible was alerted first. Fp should have been last recourse...But then again... Fp's blog is so sikat like that you know!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think this letter was misplaced. The designer should have first called the attention of stylebible. If they haven't resolved the issue by penning an erratum message, then that's the time Ms. Vicente goes out to the public to air her loathing for the supposed "practice". Has she, actually gone out to call on stylebible for the mistake? She may be just jumping the gun here. Well, this could also be a PR stunt, who knows.

  35. "I hate to think that this is a common practice done by some known and pompous designer towards a fellow designer of my status."

Did Rajo say that it was his creation? Di naman yata. Para kasi ini-imply that there's a collusion between "pompous" (her words, not mine) designers and Stylebible (and other websites and fashion mags, I suppose), when it might have been just a simple mistake. It happens. Kahit pa part ng Stylebible si Rajo, it's not like he checks each article there.

To me, ang dating tuloy is this designer is trying to drum up some noise by dragging Rajo's name.

  39. True, credit should be given to whom it is due, pero feeling mo naman sinadya ni Rajo? Siya ba nag lay-out? Your letter is insinuating something malicious and negative. And why are you barking at the wrong tree? WHy not write to stylebible? Your letter was even worded in a way na parang ini-insinuate mo na parehong na-miscredit ang gown on two successive years. Kalurkey. If anything, you seem to be milking this issue for all it is worth. Napag-usapan ka tuloy. Clap clap clap.

  40. The gown is pretty, but not earthshaking or extraordinary in the design department. I think it's beauty has more to do with Assunta's ability to carry it off well. Napaka common nga ng design eh. A seamstress can make this. It's really unfortunate that someone got credited with the design first, and I feel bad for the actual designer, but for her to suggest na it was done intentionally, by the other designer no less, is laughable. What would it benefit him to be dragged into something like this? Surely he knows it would get corrected eventually and would just create unnecessary negativity on his part. Rajo Laurel is not a dumb duck to pull off something as juvenile as this. This is a perfect example of something blown out of proportion. Talk about over reacting. You will not survive the industry Sheryl if at this stage eh you're creating enemies. Don't always imagine that people are out to get you or steal your work. It's not like you're messiah of the fashion design industry. Just sayin'.

  43. Aminin na natin, marami talagang gumagawa niyan in favour of a popular designer. If they can get away with it, cool - especially like in this case one of the best dressed si Assunta. And if this is StyleBible's fault why would Rajo not correct them? A: Eh best dressed nga kasi eh. Sino sino bang dinamitan ni Rajo sa SONA2012, may napansin ba? Yes Rajo is very successful at the moment, but sure he has to keep the ball up as well. But not at the expense of others naman. Kawawa.

  47. "si rajo ba to o mga tuta nya?"

No, I'm neither Rajo nor his "pup." I'm merely a regular reader who'd call spade a spade. It's just that some people seem to think they can fool others of their true intentions. True, the dress was attributed to Rajo by Stylebible, why didn't the designer do the decent and civilized thing, that is, to contact Stylebible to have it corrected? I'm sure Stylebible wouldn't hesistate to correct it immediately, as they readily did when this issue was opened here. Why did she have to write to FP? Simple reason: She knows FP has wide readership and it's like an advertisement in itself. If you'd read the letter carefully, she was insistent on blaming Rajo, when in fact nowhere was it mentioned by Rajo that he made the gown. Stylebible corrected the name, and I agree that there must be some sort of erratum, but to do more than that is an overkill.

  49. I really think as well this is OA.. we get where the designer is coming from but to write on this blog and blame and accuse RL and SB of a lot of negative things is just too much.

why don't you try shooting 50-100 people, get their names and who they are wearing and put them all up on the internet the next day! Im sure one or two you'll (at the very least) misspell a name or (worst) credit wrong designers/brand. Just give it a try. If may mali, we'll put you on FP din! This is just unfair!

Don't you think writing to StyleBible will be easier than ranting on blogs? Eh what if mademanda ka for wrong accusations? eeeeh for that, baka hindi ka na malagay sa StyleBible... wrong move
