Poll: What Can You Say About CJ Corona's Testimony?

  1. His testimony is not worthy of a chief justice.

He talks like former First Gentlemen, reasons like FG and lies like FG.

He lacks eloquence, and everything seems scripted.

    4. It was not worth of a Chief Justice because he never was one. He was and is still a midnight appointee. Midnight appointments have long been rejected by the Supreme Court until it became the Gloria/Corona Court.

And no, he cannot talk like the first gentleman. He was worse.

And yeah, it looks like it was scripted. Consider the following: (1) days before the testimony, his team has already mentioned his poor health conditions but never really focused on it; (2) he came with a prepared statement/speech to criticize the incumbent administration and even linking the hacienda forgetting perhaps that his legitimacy to the post has long been questioned (since the day, er night, he took his oath as CJ) before the impeachment complaint was filed; (3) he read his speech, pause for emphasis, cry and drama here and there; (4) as a witness he can only testify to facts he has personal knowledge of YET his criticisms were politicized rather that factual; (5) as CJ, he should know that he who alleges a fact has the burden of proving it. Mere denials, no matter how eloquent, cannot prove his innocence; (6) He was able to read his speech without showing any ill health; (7) He stood up and said "The Chief Justice wishes to be excused" and walked away showing utter disrespect to the court which is yet to discharge him; (8) He was still in fine health when he shook the hands of his two lawyers. It is thus questionable the allegations of the lawyers that they were not aware of the "walkout" of the CJ; (9) He was able to walk out of the room and did not seem to be ill. If his condition was true, he would not have been able to walk out because he would have been too dizzy to walk; (10) When he came back in a wheelchair, that is when he looked sick.

Scripted? Looks like it. Only a shameless midnight appointee can do that.

FP never publishes my comments. I wonder why?

    5. well said... exactly the same observation as mine. my husband is also a diabetic. he said if corona had hypoglycemic episode during those times, dapat di na nya kayanin maglakad at me lakas pang makipag shake hands. very funny tsk!!!

    7. I'm in the medical field. Kahit na sinong nasa medical field knows that severe stress will cause hyperglycemia, not hypoglycemia. Mga teh, increased lang ang creatinine nyan, which is common among diabetics, and is something that is chronic, meaning, hindi naman yan sudden or momentary.

  2. For me maraming valid points.

  4. Waiver, walkout.. What's next? These were lame tactics for an intelligent man like him. Maysakit daw..GMA lang ang peg? If this is his way to gain sympathy, then he made an epic fail. I'd rather see him defend himself in a cross examination.

    1. wala na kasi syang lusot kahit ano pa mangyari sa cross examination, the fact that he has US$ accounts but he did not disclose them on any of his SALN's, wala na, kaya damay-damay na lang, but since that will never happen anyway, walk-out na lang nga at gamitin na lang ang health issues(?) para makalusot tulad ng mga iba pang nauna nang sumabak sa mga past senate inquiries. ganyan talaga pag guilty at wala nang lusot. hayyy.

    5. I totally agree with you Anon May 23, 2012 8:20 Am.

We shouldn't think that corruption is a norm because it is not. Corruption for me is a contagious disease that should be treated.

In addition, what Mr. Corona said about the dead Mr. Basa is lower than low. He should have not opened his thoughts about how lazy the dead person was (especially in public.) He does not have the right at all. Just to prove his innocence, he would drag a dead person's name into this controversy.

Nasa stand siya at di siya nakaupo as the chief justice/judge. The least he can do is to say "may i be excused as im not feeling well" instead of "i am the chief justice and i wish to be excused" respeto naman sa husgado. Now a question rises, is that the kind of chief justice that we want?

This guy sincerely believes that he did nothing wrong. He never resigned and he never gave in to pressure.

      - He had a chance to be cross examined BUT nag-walkout sya... sya ang umiwas and if he's really not hiding something, he could have signed the waiver with NO CONDITIONS at all.

    7. Kamag-anak ka ni Corona, 'te? Kitang-kita naman. Napaka-planado lahat. Ipinanlaban pa talaga ang right to self-incrimination? Namaaan. Sobra na, Corona.

To cj corona, you cant fool the FILIPINOS anymore over your mala teleseryeng act. I appreciate him though when he got his pen and sIgned a piece of paper and said he'll waive all his rights to secrecy but then he ask for the 188+1 to sign too and upon completion would be the time he'll pass his. I was very disappointed.. He belittles the FILIPINOS. A man in trial doesnt have the right to post conditions! If you're not guilty then let them make their judgments through your transparency.

His words are meaningless; he and his minions have lied too many times already. Anything he says can't be believed unless backed up by an actual document and evidence of his own. Corona and his lawyers completely failed in this task.

BUT we have to respect the separation of the three branches of government - this is where it should have started. AND this is where we stumbled because the one branch was usurping another another's jurisdiction.

we have to respect the process. we have to respect the democracy we so proudly enjoy now - even if it means we have to painfully watch the entire farce, at our expense (that's the taxpayers' money being wasted!).

You can't automatically say that he cried because he wants to get our sympathy.. Maybe he cried because he was hurting. Also defense lawyer did not stop him from leaving but instead shook his hand? You usually do that at the end of testifying. Meaning at least 2 of his defense lawyers knew that corona was already ending his testimony, without being cross-examined.

At the end of it all though, I saw him as a monkey throwing sticks and stones and running at the first sign of trouble. He did a cowardly act very unbecoming of a Supreme Court justice. He should be without taint but the way he defended himself yesterday showed clearly how he was throwing issues left and right to muddle the case. I believe we tend to forget that our Supreme Court Justice is someone who is seen to be with the highest moral principles. If he is not able to defend himself in court and prefers to hide behind the pretense of sickness, then he has no busness calling himself Chief Justice. For all that he did yesterday, he should resign. Now I will look to our senator judges as to how they will judge our country's future.

MANILA, Philippines - Chief Justice Renato Corona’s walkout Tuesday, May 22, eclipsed his testimony. In his opening statement that lasted 3 hours, the impeached Chief Justice accused the government of a conspiracy against him and described a report on his dollar accounts as a "malicious lie."

But Corona's statement was riddled with inconsistencies, particularly when he talked about the Basa-Guidote Enterprices Inc, the disputed family corporation of his wife Cristina.

We noted at least 6 inconsistencies in the Chief Justice's statement before the court.

    1. They live a simple life?

Corona said his family lives a simple life. They rarely use the air-conditioner and they don’t have any househelp.

“Simpleng buhay at tahahan lamang. Hindi man kami gumagamit ng aircon sapagkat napakadali naming magkasakit sa lamig. Simpleng pagkain lamang ang kinakain namin sa bahay. Sa maniwala man kayo o hindi, kami po ay walang katulong sa bahay,” Corona said.

But Corona’s reimbursements in the Supreme Court tell a different story. He dined in fancy restaurants and wore expensive Barong Tagalog, among others.

Among the documents that the prosecution panel has are the following:

Corona's reimbursement of P15,362.37 for a meal at Century Tsukiji restaurant on June 20, 2010. The receipt was under the name “Renato/Cristina Corona.”
Corona's reimbursement of P20,400 and P25,000 for Barong Tagalog purchased at Rustan’s store Design Exchange Corp.
A reimbursement of P100,000 for the “purchase Christmas gifts of the Chief Justice”

Receipts of his reimbursements were part of the evidence that various commercial institutions submitted to the Senate impeachment court based on a request from the prosecution.

  63. . Daughter Carla took a risk in buying the BGEI shares?

The Chief Justice took lengths in explaining how his daughter Carla took a risk in buying the shares of the disputed family corporation. She was at that time supposedly looking for a suitable investment for her savings.

    A risk for P28,000?

Carla was the lone bidder in the public auction of 91% of the toal BGEI shares. For P28,000 she acquired a property with an asset of at least P34.7-M. This is what the Manila City Hall paid the corporation in 2001 to purchase a BGEI lot in Sampaloc, Manila.

Corona said Carla was willing to bid up to P50,000.

BGEI was dragged into the impeachment trial because of Corona’s 2003 Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) declaration that he took an P11-M loan from the corporation. His defense lawyers argued it's the BGEI money that allowed the Coronas to purchase high-end properties in La Vista in Quezon City and Bellagio and Bonifacio Ridge in upscale The Fort, Taguig City.

    ReplyDelete
  64. . Jose Maria Basa III eased out Cristina Corona's mother in a dispute involving a P2.5-B worth of property in Libis.

In his testimony, Corona introduced a new twist in the BGEI family dispute. He claimed that the root of the family dispute was a property in Libis where Jose Maria Basa III supposedly eased out his own sister Asuncion Basa-Roco, mother of Mrs Corona.

“Hindi po si Mr. Jose Maria Basa ang naapi. Sya po ang nang-api sa aking mother-in-law at sa pamilya ng aking mother-in-law,” Corona said.

But according to Rappler editor-at-large Marites Vitug, this is inconsistent with Mrs Corona's court testimony in relation to the BGEI case. Vitug is the author of bestseller “Shadow of Doubt.” She continues to follow the workings of the Supreme Court.

“It was very clear in the court transcripts when Cristina testified in one court case. She said and I quote “My grandmother bought the 2-hectare property in Jose Maria Basa’s name,” Vitug said in an interview with Rappler executive editor Maria Ressa on Tuesday’s newscast.

“So if you can go back to this, there are a lot of loopholes in his testimony,” Vitug added.

  65. . BGEI’s ugly history encouraged them to invest in cash instead of real property

Corona said the family dispute over BGEI taught them lessons and discouraged them from real property investments. They preferred cash, thus their foreign currency investments.

Corona also said they started investing in foreign exchange in the “late 60s” when the "dollar exchange was P2 to $1."

The family dispute, however, only began after the 1983 death of the family matriarch Rosario Guidote Vda. De Basa, the founder and the majority shareholder of BGEI.

    5. He started investing in foreign exchange in the late 60s when US$1 was equivalent to PhP2?

The Twitter world was quick to react to Corona’s recollection of his early years as foreign exchange investor. He supposedly started in the late 1960s when US$1 was equivalent to PhP2?

First, Undersecretary Manolo Quezon of the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office (PCDSPO) noted that peso devaluation began in the administration of the late President Diosdado Macapagal, who was president from 1961 to 1965.

And second, Corona was still a college student in the late 1960s. He graduated in college in 1970.

  66. 6. I have no 82 bank accounts.

Corona admitted before the impeachment court that he has dollar accounts. But he said it’s not 82 as Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales had claimed. As of December 2011, he had four dollar accounts, he said.

But it’s a technicality. Using the Ombudsman’s own PowerPoint presentation, Corona showed how the 82 different accounts were used for dollar time deposits but which he immediately closed after the investments matured.

Corona never disputed the transactions stated in the Anti-Money Laundering Council report cited by the Ombudsman. Citing the confidentiality of foreign deposits, Corona said he has no obligation to declare his dollar accounts.

In February, PSBank president Pascual Garcia III confirmed at least 5 dollar accounts of Corona. Before he could divulge the details, the Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order stopping the Senate court from looking into his dollar accounts.
