The Enigma of a Gaga

The Gaga is a Lady. Oh yes, she is eccentric, flamboyant, fearless, and to her Filipino fans -- she's real, a Gaga by their definition. An artist who rose to fame for her diverse taste in music and outlandish fashion. And they go gaga over her, tagging her every performance as beyond the best, and her every word downright quotable. Who can argue with that?

Worldwide, Lady Gaga’s music and presence never fail to stir controversy in a huge way. Her bizzare stage performances are often subjects to criticisms and ridicule. Her Born This Way Ball Tour sparked debates from people of all persuasions - religion, politics, entertainment. And just about every Tom, Dick and Harry, too. Locally, it is also the limelight-seeking politicians who dip their already dirty fingers to every issue one can imagine. But often than not, it's the the religious communities who feel strongly against her. They label Lady Gaga and her music as blasphemous, disrespectful, profane. Guys, have you heard of freedom called expression?

These people protest that her songs' lyrics are too offensive and provocative for comfort. They believe their fear that her huge influence will make the youth astray and be menace to society. They claim that she is a devil doing satanic rituals on the pretext of music. Oh, my foot!

But why this violent reaction over Lady Gaga? Why didn’t we protest about other foreign artists who were here before her, whose image and music were likewise as controversial, if not dubious? What made her so ‘special’ to deserve a boycott? Oh well, so much over-acting for nothing. Or so much ignorance.

Wasn't Lady Gaga the one who put up a foundation to empower the youth, who was the first to stand up and raised millions to help Japan and Haiti after the devastating earthquakes, who joined MAC to support people living with aids, and the list goes on? Is this now the new definition of devil?

And who are these supposed judges of Gaga's character? Have you ever filled even half her shoes? Please stand up and be counted.

Since when did it happen that listening to love songs will make you fall in love, exposure to religious songs will make you godly, and listening to Gaga’s Judas song will make you satanic?

Where is reason in justfying that the young people should not watch and hear her? Hello? Have you heard of internet, of youtube? If your daughter goes and chooses to follow the Lady, don't blame the Gaga, blame yourself who raised her.

I happened to be lucky enough to watch her concert on its first day here in Manila. Up close, I saw the fire in her, the passion I never knew before. To say that she is fabulous is a gross understatement. The sold-out concert was an ultimate experience. Her audience was devoted, and like her, was brave and daring. What drew them to Lady Gaga was her fab persona, her fearlessness to express herself. She is bold, captivating, defiant. She was aware of the boycott and addressed those concerned, "I am not a creature of your government, Manila!" That sent goose bumps all over.

For the Lady, it’s all about you, yourself and living it. "People need to be free, to be who they are." And that's enough inspiration for her fans whom she calls her Little Monsters.

To the skeptics, we hope you open that box - behind Lady Gaga's outrageous image is a person who cares about the world, the youth. For the Gaga, it’s not always about the music. It’s all about you - us. Our insecurities and fears hold us back, but she says that we should embrace it all. No escape, no excuse. Because rightly or wrongly, like it or not - we were born this way.

  3. Very well said FP!!! this scenario reflects the kind of poor mentality most of filipinos have. most of us are always thinking of so many negative.things we always forget to look at tje.brighter side of things. too narrowminded to think that lyrics have different interpretations. just in case lady gaga is a bad influence, parents have the right not to permt their minors to the concert! No need to protest Lady Gaga! She exists to make music and not to spread satanisism!!!

  7. This is a free country no one is putting anyone at gunpoint to watch or listen to Lady Gaga. She is an inspiration to a lot of people and has campaigned for equality and to end bullying. To those people who judges her ask yourselves have you lifted a finger to help out others? Have you shown compassion to those who were oppressed? Stop judging people. Put your efforts somewhere productive. This country has a lot more pertinent issues to address. And to Lady G. love the concert it's worth every penny.

  8. Sa totoo lang, one of my Lady Gaga favorites is the song "Judas"- metaphor siya, which means a woman in love with a bad(Judas-type) guy she can't resist, kahit anong gawin niya in -love pa din siya sa mala-"Judas" na lalake, yun yung meaning ng song, yung ibang hypocrites hindi yata alam ang metaphor, grabe, I love the "Judas" song! Na-in love kasi ako sa mala-"Judas" na lalake back then...

Oh sige, magliteralan tayo! HAHA! Jesus take the wheel! Pag draybin si Jesus?

And you should not take Gaga personally, she is an artist. ARTIST.
And as conservative christians you call yourself, you don't have the right to condemn. Calling GAGA Demonic doesn't make you less evil either.

  23. Hi! Just wanna share my opinion.

I dislike lady gaga after reading the vigilant citizen article on lady gaga.

If you have the time, please go to the website: vigilancitizen.com and read on the articles about lady gaga.

I am not convincing anyone, i am not putting pressure to convert. But i think that fans of lady gaga should also know where the non-fans are coming from.

I Was a fan until i became aware. But, i did not go to protest about her. I even like some of her songs. But at least i am aware the limitations between appreciating her music and efforts versus defending her with your life or following her ways.

I dislike lady gaga, and that's my opinion and choice. I respect her as an artist. I like some of her catchy songs. But i know where i stand to a point that i do not foollow her ways like a sick puppy or worship her.

    6. Wow. i'm surprised that na may tao parin na naniniwala dito. The article isn't authentic and the site clearly is not authentic. Yan ang problema sa atin, may mabasa lang, easily influenced kaagad. Have your own stand, don't live by the stand of others.

I respect your dislike of Gaga, but to be easily influenced by that article, isn't good. It wasn't even authentic.

    7. Kanya kanya tayong pinaniniwalaan.:) and the fact that i have read it sa site, i wont deny, i just trusted what was written there. Again, i posted the comment not to convert anyone, or to put pressure, i also wanted to share where others are coming from, and apparently, a lot of people read that site too.

I believe that not all found in the internet is the truth. But i personally think it depends what you believe in and how you react to it. I think i have not crossed that line, meaning i have not offended anyone when i posted that comment. Again, i just merely stated an opinion with regards to the post.

      Thank you so much!

    8. p.s. again i am not endorsing the site ha? my purpose is to just share where other people are also coming from. And btw it also took me a lot of research (this i have done personally, just for myself) to actually believe in it. it all boils down to what you trust/ believe in that's why you like/ dislike a thing/ celebrity/ person, as long as you have not offended others. I think personally believing in something is not dictated by anybody else.

Why doesn't anybody call Justin Bieber SATANIC because he influences youths directly -- that bad hair, awful fashion sense and being photographed/documented doing age-inappropriate stuff. And he dare ware a cross necklace!

BUT THE QUESTION IS: WHY ANYBODY HASN'T STAGED A RALLY / ROUSED PEOPLE TO BOYCOTT JUSTIN BIEBER'S CONCERT?

BY THE WAY, i've to make this clear, I am in no way a fan of Lady Gaga(I find her songs boring, beat-wise) but to allow yourselves to be convinced by what's written in that site...You seriously have got to be kidding me.

    11. ganun talaga, kanya kanya tayong pinaniniwalaan. :) i am even not pressuring you to read the site. Wala rin naman akong nasasaktan. So i guess being angry with me for believing that stuff is your problem. (no offense) we have our own reasons and sources why we believe/ not believe the things we see around us, as long as you are not hurting anyone.

Fans and haters have every right to believe what they want to believe, as long as you have not crossed the line by hurting other people.

  24. What made her special versus other performers is that she BLATANTLY puts on a show to express what she wanted to express through her songs.

Please research for more thouroughly. Lady gaga is NOT the first to Empower the youth and go on helping haiti and japan. A LOT of people And celebrities and personalities have done this, google it. Gaga has done
It, but shes not the first one.

If you have not watched the music video of Judas, please do. I do not see any romantic feeling over the video.

I am not a creature of your government, manila. So how does this statement connect with the religious groups who protest her. Sincerely, im just confused. Does the govt also hates her? In the first place, they shouldnt approve the concert if they dont like her.

Please dont blame the parents why their children like lady gaga. We are in a 20th century, and TV and internet is just a click away. Even their peers can
Influence them without the knowledge of parents. This kind of defense over a singer is just plain selfish.

How about those evil horns she wore in some of her concerts and lots of crap symbolisms as well? I can't argue more that she's into it, she even said herself that she saw devils in her dreams. I don't say she's the only one, she's in the same feathers with other pop stars like rihanna, britney, etc., and most people in hollywood

By reading that, hindi kayo dapat nag assume. You should see the issue in retro spec.

My points is, there are always two sides. AND YOU CANT COME INTO CONCLUSION BY NOT KNOWING EACH SIDE, meaning You cant always be assuming that GAGA is demonic by just simply reading that article THAT you weren't even SURE if that is authentic.

I am not against Gaga at all, by the way. However, the way you demean the religious sect is just proof of how gullible you are. Just remember, the devil does not act devilish, he acts in supreme goodness to pull people to him and make them trust him... have you ever read the Bible? hmmm... maybe not, because you spend way too many time listening to her music...

    1. So ibig mong sabihin, before this piece by FP on Lady Gaga was published, you were a *fan* of this site? Eh di ba the, ahem, word of God tells His followers to do more than discuss other people's lives - specifically Leviticus 19:16, Proverbs 11:13, Romans 1:29, 1 Timothy 5:13, Matthew 7:1, Proverbs 18:8?

Wag i-cherry pick ang Bible, teh. Kung talagang ardent follower ka ng word of God na sinasabi mo, you wouldn't even have been on this site in the first place. Ipokritang frog.

    4. You were made a non-fan because FP was asking people to be more open-minded about an artist who chose to use her popularity to further her advocacies like acceptance of social outcasts and helping nations besieged by natural calamities. But for all the articles that ridicule and bash celebrities, media personalities and politicians - you loved and lapped it up. How very Christian of you.

      Delete
    5. by reading the comments I can easily pick those who know the TRUTH and read the Bible from non beleivers. I admire Lady Gaga`a talent, but not her style. she wrote Born this way in 10 mins with LGBT`s on her mind, so eto palang may loyal fans na sya kaagad fr LGBT community. To Anonymous 7:07 I totally agree with you, right is right , wrong is wrong, her blasphemous videos are...blasphemous, we can`t argue with that and blasphemy is a SIN, and this is not coming from me, it`s in the BIBLE. It`s the truth! I don`t protest Lady Gaga, nor hate her followers kasi nga may free will tayo lahat.Respect na lang each other`s beliefs.

    6. Well, If Gaga is really indeed Demonic, let God do his actions.Bahala na si God. But I'm so disappointed the way Christians react. And to reach the point that they have to rally in the streets. They are so many evil in this Earth and how come they use their effort of showing their Christianity by condemning Gaga. To dear conservative Christians, calling Gaga literally monster and Demonic doesn't make you less Demonic either.

    4. herefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed. -Romans 2:1-29

  37. FP, the protesters are also exercising their freedom of expression. Gaga has the freedom but does not have the sense of responsibility. She is well aware of the influence of her songs. Freedom of expression should be practiced with responsibility.

  38. Ang problema kasi FP eh lately parang to the extreme na ang songs niya pati getup nya. Ang layo-layo ng image nya unlike when she first started. Okay pa nung una pero hello naman, nagiging weird na ang fashion nya. There are certain words and topic na silent taboo na ilagay sa songs, but she crossed it. Aware siya na she has a wide influence to her fans esp. on the youth, sana lang hinay-hinay muna siya. Hindi na ako magugulat if one of these days she announces a worldwide act in her name.

  39. I used to LOVE lady gaga! I sing all her songs & dance with it but when I saw the videos and made some research about her.. I discovered her true identity! She's a satanist and she"s so precise with her satanic rituals... It's not an art why? If it's really just art how come the satanic symbols are precise with her videos. Videos show the meaning of the songs. I thought her songs are so simple and talks about love. For instance, You and I I thought it's just about a guy from Nebraska but watch the video of it.. The meaning is otherwise. I know you will not post this but I dare you to make a research about her! Thank you! Never be bias! Paws up? Hahaha

The site has the same amount of journalistic integrity as tabloids printing about UFOs and Kim Kardashian. The site is but an updated version of all that crazy literature speaking about back masking and how songs, when back-masked, reveal their hidden satanic messages. If Gaga and the other celebrities are as powerful as the site and its conspiracy theories suggest, she would certainly have gone farther than she has right now. Before reading this site, read about schizophrenia - it will make more sense.

  46. People with sticks up their behinds, you have to realize that Gaga should be taken as seriously as Marilyn Manson and Ozzie Osbournes' bat biting theatrics on stage. Marilyn Manson was a marketing specialist before he was a recording artist. I think this speaks for itself on why he has that image. As for Ozzie, after seeing an episode of the Osbournes you would know that John Malkovich is a hell of a lot scarier than he ever will be. Gaga lives and breathes controversy. If you get worked up over anything she puts out, she succeeds. If you want to "kill" her, ignore her. Personally I don't see the point of taking sides, ie pro or anti Gaga. What I have a problem with are mindless sheep mobbing against a certain celebrity while invoking the Bible. Unless you can read the language the Bible was originally written in, stop invoking it like you have a patent on it. The person or group of persons who translated the Bible you cling onto as the absolute truth are not infallible and therefore prone to errors. Only time can tell how great their margin of error is or how much was lost in translation. I'm personally offended everytime some grandstanding religious group invokes the name of Christ to justify a backward cause. Of course now I'll be branded as someone who believed the devil's lie since I disagree with them. Religious zealots have a natural aversion to critical thinking.

  55. I remember that in the 70's and 80's, Rock and Roll was touted as being from the devil and that the Beatles and Elvis were subliminally telling the youth to worship Satan --things we laugh about now because 40 years later, not one of those who condemned the Beatles and Elvis as Satanists would admit they even thought that way. Kasi, when you think about it (and indeed people should think about it instead of jumping on the bandwagon to condemn Lady Gaga), can she honestly wreck your mind? If she says "Jump", will you say "How high?"

Aren't the people who staged the protests around the MOA Arena during Lady Gaga's concert the ones ramming Their beliefs on others? Let creativity and artistry be. Only time will tell if Lady Gaga becomes an icon of this generation or an equivalent of Milli Vannili. But right here, right now, everyone deserves a chance to create music and dance and art -- it is what separates us from animals. If we stifle creativity at every turn, we are regressing into less than cavemen. For even cavemen had music and art.

You may not like Lady Gaga, but have you ever stopped to think if everyone liked your choice of music too? What makes you feel alive and happy may not necessarily be what makes others alive and happy... And That Is Alright. Diversity is good! Otherwise, we'll all be living in a monochromatic, monotone world. And who wants that, right?

Let's not make this about religion because I don't see the Pope or even Manalo from the INC reacting to this. Let's call it as it is: A weak ploy by some small religious sects to gain nationwide (or at least metrowide) fame for 15 seconds. The sad thing about it is that these "religious" groups are condemning Lady Gaga for the sin of blasphemy and yet they are the ones invoking God for their own personal gain. Voice your personal opinion, but do not let these cults use you unknowingly. Don't follow blindly, because discernment is a God-given gift: Use It.

I would like to think, FP, that all these haters have made Lady Gaga even more famoous, more talked about in our country.

So to all you haters out there: by all means, please bash Lady Gaga all you want. Because the more you talked about her, the more your kids are Google-ing her.

    ReplyDelete
  62. FP, I used to really respect Gaga and loved her music. But why choose to romanticize Judas a negative symbol in the Catholic Church? And why the blasphemous acts towards the rosary. The same way we all protest a homophobe who says hurtful things about the LGBT community, so do I protest Gaga's acts that hurt the Christian community. Those homophobic politicians/pastors or whomever have likewise done a lot of good, but the homophobia can't be ignored. Imagine yourself married to a man who is a pillar of the community, very famous powerful and influential, but that man abuses you, would it matter to you the other good things that he's done? Can all the good negate the validity of your experience as an abused person? Of course not. It's foolish to imply that. Any form of disrespect to any group of people is unacceptable and when some people say it's not ok to disrespect the LGBT community but ok to disrespect the Christian community, it's no different from when a gay student is bullied in school and no one stands up for that person. If Gaga had used Hitler's "image" in her song, for sure things would be different. A video "eating" a Koran would likewise create outrage in the Muslim community. OR what about a song revolving around the KKK who hate on not just coloured ppl but the LGBT community as well?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Wow, I'm always amazed by the vicious comments here in FP. But so far I think I've refrained from making cutting/cruel comments and always given comments to enlighten, to present a different perspective. Anyway, I'm Catholic and I love gay people but I'm offended by her swallowing the rosary and the glorification of Judas. that's it. Imagine all the times someone tried to glorify the Marcoses, how the victims have spoken out against it. The thing is, you guys can't see the other perspective because you love Gaga. I love God and yet I see and understand the LGBT community. Gaga can be a symbol of progress and forward thinking without "bashing" the Catholic Church. That's all I'm saying. To the one who referenced Elvis, need I remind you how he or a lot of those rock stars end up? The same way some priests succumb to horrifying acts. Evil works everywhere, especially on God's people. And for those who say religious organizations don't donate. Uhm, the CTK community last year collected more than P10million pesos. That's CTK alone. Each Catholic school I know collects millions and the most you can say against the Catholic Church is they buy 1 "expensive" car. Lady Gaga does what she does to market herself. PRECISELY as someone said here. She does things to benefit others but mostly to benefit herself. Priests live on P10,000 per month income to bring people closer to God. I know priests who come from rich families (live in villages) or had businesses that would put most of the people who write on FP to shame and they gave it all up for God. Personally, my family donated hundreds of thousands last year and we're not even rich. My cousin is Christian and she doesn't celebrate her kids' bday, when she does, it's to have a kiddie party at the orpahanage, not a jollibee party but a real kiddie party with the host, the food carts, the works. My husband and I barely celebrate our bdays, but on each we donate to the Church and the orphanages. If you knew us before we were close to the Lord you would know how good He is. Christians may be far from perfect but everyone is a work in progress. To you someone who looks like a 170-pounder may seem fat but if you knew that person used to weigh 300pounds you'd know what a herculean task that person has done and so it is with most Christians. Being Christian in no way means being perfect, it means attempting to be better than you ever were. And what's so wrong about that?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nothing is wrong with being a Christian. There is nothing wrong with practicing your beliefs because it's your personal life. Take note: your Personal Life. There's no reason to toot your own trumpet and call attention to the "hundreds and thousands" of your Personal income that you gave to charity. Are you waiting for people to applaud you for your Personal Choice of not celebrating your birthday because you gave Your money to the church and to orphanages? Isn't Pride one of the Seven Deadly Sins?

You are free to live your life the way you choose to... Because it's Your Life (and Your money). Let others live Their lives too, in the way they see fit-- and believe it or not, it won't hurt to let them do so, because it has nothing to do with you.

  64. When Gaga starts giving at least 10% (or a greater percentage since she has way more than she needs) of her PERSONAL earnings to the poor, to the LGBT community, the way Christians do to their causes, then you can say she's nobler than she truly is. She's a celebrity and you're all fans. That's all there is to it. Do her songs make you better? If yes then great. If not, then question why you follow her. If she only makes you feel good, well, so do sex drugs alcohol and indulgences. I used to like her because she advocated for the LGBT community but she turned me off when she started bashing the Christian community.

Obvious to us how in bad taste it was right? but apparently to a whole group of people it wasn't so. You can't take a controversial figure associated with the execution of Jesus and make him into a metaphor and expect people not to be offended. Hello. Feces can be used as a metaphor for something more profound as well but how would that be? Metaphors can be done well if the overt and covert are represented in a sophisticated manner.

Half and half po tayo, meron naniniwala meron hindi... we now have too much freedom of speech, and just basically freedom... the freedom to kill, to shoot, to blaspheme, to hate, to use the name of God the Lord in vain... Your comment is well written and off tangent. The vicious comments are not aimed at open minded Christians or Catholics. They are aimed at those who are otherwise like those who protest against Gaga because of how she chooses to market herself.

    My 2 cents:

While those purporting to be "close to Christ or the faithful" are tempted to believe that they know better than others, bite your tongue. We can decide for ourselves, we certainly do on a daily basis so I think we have more than earned the right to decide what music to listen to or not. We ultimately reap what we sow so if our actions bear good fruit then that's our gain. If we reap bad fruit, it's unfortunate and will be our cross to bear later on in life or in the afterlife (assuming for argument's sake there is one). But don't take our right to decide for ourselves what is right or wrong away. Don't take it upon yourselves to represent us on the street and in the media protesting against Gaga and other controversial personalities. We did not authorize you to speak on our behalf. Know your place and respect ours. If you choose to speak for your beliefs, don't ram it down our throats. It won't bode well for all parties anyway.
