Letter from a Reader: Beware of the Price Tags

Sale Price (Yellow Tag): 169.75 PhP
Regular Price (White Tag): 89.75 Php

Sale Price (Yellow Tag): 170 PhP
Before Price (According to Yellow Tag): 339.75 PhP
Regular Price (White Tag): 249.75 PhP

Dear Fashion PULIS:

Since I sent out an email to my friends regarding the various ways of cheating by this chain of stores, I have received several feedbacks from various people, all narrating their experiences of being short-changed at by this chain. The anomalous method remains unchanged, the prices posted on the shelves for some grocery items are different from the ones in the bar codes. Buyers are often unaware that such is the case and that they are charged more for their purchases without knowing it.

When my son and I purchased ice cream from the store's supermarket, the price posted above the freezer was 185 PhP per 1/2 gallon of Nestle ice cream. At the cashier while paying for the bill, we were charged 205 PhP for the half gallon. My son complained about this, so a supervisor came and checked the posted price on top of the freezer. She went to the freezer to remove the price and directed the cashier to invalidate the first receipt and issue us a new one.

Here are the other feedbacks that I received from different people after sending the email

Feedback 1:
This was about a big amount of  more than 3,000 PhP for a single item in the receipt which said lobster. When you do your groceries, you do not bother with the long receipt and trust that the scanned items are correct. As a habit, I leave the receipt in the car and which fortunately my husband browsed through while I was driving. He asked if I really bought lobster for more than 3,000 PhP. I was so shocked and true enough it was registered in the receipt. We both went to the supermarket and complained.

To make matters worse, the supermarket did not even carry that item! Of course there was no lobster in that supermarket! It took about 3 managers to check. Thank goodness this time I kept the receipt. They could not explain how it happened especially since they don't sell the specific item.

The second incident was when I had to get a few items and there was a vegetable pack I bought registered a different amount. The cashier was not aware and so I called her attention. When she had it checked, the item came back with a lower amount.

It is really just impossible to check each item when they scan it especially if you are buying a cartload or more of groceries!

Feedback 2:
If I were not alert and conscious of the tag prices on the shelves, I would have been victimized. I refused to buy these grocery items with discrepant prices, so I shoved them away. The cash register definitely records higher prices compared to those on the tags. You really pay more to the cashier.

So the lesson is to keep an eye on the cash register for each and every item you put in your cart. Do not be complacent to think that the prices you see on the shelves will be the same when they are scanned by the cash register.

Feedback 3:
My friend narrated that she bought a mono block chair at the department store. But when the cash register punched the price at 50 PhP more than the posted price, she complained and had the item returned and then invalidated from her receipt.

Feedback 4:
My friend purchased a piece of vegetable at the supermarket, but when this item was punched by the cash register, it was 10 PhP more. She complained and then decided to return the item instead.

Feedback 5:
When my friends visited the newly opened supermarket, along with other grocery items, they got a pack of Hall's candy worth 20 PhP. When they got home, they were shocked to see on their receipt that they had been charged 200 PhP for the candy. So they returned to supermarket, demanding to have the over-charged amount refunded to them. The customer service staff refused to return the money, saying that since they used a credit card, they would have to return after so many days so that the purchase could first be cleared. After 3 hours of wrangling with customer service, yes, 3 hours, and still not being able to get their money back, my friend created a scene by shouting angrily and loudly at the staff. In order to pacify him, a staff took out 180 Php from his own pocket and gave this amount to him
.
I hope you post this on Fashion PULIS so that your many readers can be more vigilant when they do their shopping in these stores. More power to the best blog ever!

Yours truly,
Mara

I am challenging the readers of Fashion PULIS to be as creative as possible in naming this chain of stores. Comments with letters or initials of the store, taglines or slogans will not be posted. I will be waiting for your comments. =)

  2. It's gotta be the Rihanna song! Based on the price tag, it's the only store I can think of considering the unfair labor practices that they do and actually get away with it!

  3. i think this should not be tag as BI. kung para sa ikabubuti ng nakararami dapat hindi mo binura ang pangalan ng supermarket sa price tag para maging vigilant ang mga mamimili. just my piece

  4. @Anon 1:34AM

Mas gusto ko yung version ni Rihanna with Britney ng song na to. Yun din guess ko.

I had a professor who told our class about this. When he was still a working student, he used to work for this department store. Whenever there will be sales daw, they would be asked to change the price tags. The question is how they can get past DTI.

This is why I don't shop and buy groceries from them anymore. Also, I'm not a fan of their cinemas.

  18. Its the same here in the U.S. We shopped at a filipino chain grocery store and bought frozen lumpia shanghai and the guy scanned it as $60. Helloooo... $60 for lumpia?!?!... you bet your a$$ I made him re-scan the item and void the original $60 charge. Same with coconut milk, they had it on sale for 0.99 when the girl scanned it the price was $3.99 so I complained and said the tag was 0.99, so they had to void it and change it to 0.99. You really have to be careful, make sure you or someone with you is watching the screen when they're scanning the items. I never have these problems when shopping at Ralph's, Pavilions or Von's. I hope its just not the pinoy stores or I'd be truly disappointed.

  20. their prices are really higher compared to other malls/groceries here in cebu. thats why i dont like to shop at their groceries.. although the mall really has a lot to offer.. but with their cinema house and grocery center, NO. imbes maka gain ako from my small store nalulugi ako kc super mahal.

    ReplyDelete
  21. i also had a similar experience pero not as big as those stories above. ang mahirap lang kasi, for example i bought this item that was 10php more than the price tag. i let them get away with it but when i noticed for the nth time na ganun, nagreklamo na ako because if you add it up, malaki na din siya. and i am only one customer. how about if there were 100 of us? ang laki!

    ReplyDelete
  22. do they really have it all for us? apparently yes including the price cheating!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Saw these photos na on twitter before. They've got it all -- pati panggugulang sa customers... We stopped buying groceries in one of their branches along C5 when we realised that some items which we usually buy are actually cheaper in Rustan's Katipunan. To think ha na pang-masa ang image nila.. Tsk tsk tsk..

  24. To fellow fashion pulis fans, please be aware that we have a Price Tag law that requires that "all consumer products sold in retail to the public shall bear an appropriate price tag, label or marking indicating the price of the article. Such consumer products shall not be sold at a price higher than that stated therein."

Here's the link to the DTI website: http://www.dticebu.net.ph/09_d_03.htm

You can lodge a complaint with the DTI and note that for repeat offenders, the penalty is revocation of business license.

In any case, you can assert your right in the grocery NOT to pay any price more than the price tag by citing the Price Tag Law.

  27. Thank you sa nagsend nito. Atleast now we'll be more careful in buying there. Gustong gusto ko pa naman dun because of the points that you get from shopping. Mas malaki pa pala na-earn nila compared sa points nakukuha ko.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i did that, too. i tried to take off the yellow sticker kasi i want to know the original price and voila!!! nakakaloka kasi according to their sales pitch, 50% dapat ang item na bibilhin ko but it turned out less than 10% lang ang actual discount kasi manipulated ang yellow sticker...just my piece!

i agree sa grocery din nila. iba ang price sa shelves tapos pag nasa cashier ka na, mas mahal na. kaya we really should be very vigilant about this.

  29. It's good that the practices of this chain is being publicized, but I would suggest that the reader who wrote in forward her letter to DTI. Since she has photographic evidence, it will help her case. No one can be bothered to complain because it's usually such an ordeal to call, follow-up, etc. but someone needs to speak up against this giant chain.

Or, maybe, she should forward this to a local news show. Although I'm not sure if the network will have the balls to go up against this big company.

  36. This chain of store is notorious for cheating the public of their hard-earned money. And to think, that they had nothing when they started. And now that they have everything and more, they continue to bleed their consumers dry.

There was this email that circulated sometime last year about their modus operandi in their Super Market. Totoo pala ito!!!
I went to buy a few items abt 3 wks ago. Pagdating sa counter, the price scanned was 48.50 for a can of condensed milk while the tag showed it to be 47.50. I complained and the staff--- the bagger, cashier and even the supervisor didn't seem to look flustered about my complaint. Parang sanay na sila and obviously know about it. Cool na cool which infuriated me even more.

A word of warning to their regular shoppers, check each item they scan and always keep in mind that their items are more expensive than their competitors. Akala lang natin Super Mura sila, but in fact, if you check closely, they are Super Mahal.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Not just the Rihanna song store-also this retail royalty-their supermarket and their other specialty store (which is also like the Rihanna song but invert the letters) -the price tag and the scanned prices are totally different-but if you call their attention on this during payment time, they give you the lower price-this is per DTI rule, but still...

  42. It is just not the grocery, also other establishments. if I can only name a few. One is a known Toy Store in a big mall. Another one is an office/business retail clothes store. The clothes store often advertise they have an up to 50-70% sale, tapos ung base price is more than the price of the item on a regular season.

    ReplyDelete
  43. let us be vigilant, i'd be more careful now in my purchases with that store...if ever i'd be convinced to patronize it again after all that i have read...it is the right of the consumer to be treated fairly...

    ReplyDelete
  44. I worked there before and yes, the underlings (store personnel) are asked to update prices tuwing sale. Some items are repriced higher and are put in the pile alongside REAL sale and discounted items. Marami namang nauuto. Di ko lang alam ang gawain nila sa supermarket ha, they're a different corporation from the umbrella of companies.

  52. Isang branch nila dito Sa Mindanao ran into a spat with the local government. It seemed that they were backlogged paying for fees and local taxes + penalties that amounted to millions since they opened way back. I was working with one of the LGUs around the time they (the company) petitioned to lower down the amount when a case was filed against them. With all the revenues they have been getting they had to bargain to pay their dues? Tsk.. SAKIM MASYADO!

  53. so shocked to read all these comments!! i already had an idea before of their unfair practices since my friends who are tenants would always complain to me about how high their rental rates are and how they are required to pay a super high percentage of sales pa on top of the rental. but this issue with the price tags is really below the belt... now i'm really determined to be extra vigilant whenever i shop there.

  57. I've heard of several stories as well. I do my grocery there smetimes. It's really difficult to check prices, especially Since the iteMs only have bar codes and the prices displayed on the shelves are not even organized.

Most of the Shoppers I bet do not have the tiMe to Scrutinize and Memorize prices, and this retailer knows that, that's why they do it.

    Ang sama-sama talaga, sobrang manloloko.
    DTI should look into this.

  59. its all about the money.

they favor hiring people who belong to a certain Christian group (made in the Phils) because bawal ang strike and labor unions sa religion nila.

and they are all about earning. your recent article regarding Family First or Danvil is evidence of that/ why would a respectable establishment allow a business to be run like that in their premises? talagang pera-prea lang sila, maloko ka na or madugas basta kumita lang sila.

and wow, ang founder is the richest "Filipino"? WTF?! mayaman, oo pero Sa Madugas na paraan ang pagpatakbo nila ng business. they do not deserve the accolades that they are receiving!

  60. had a similar incident din sa mall/supermarket na to. pero dahil din sa cashier nila. we bought a lotion worth 200+ when we were done na, i checked the receipt tapos nakita ko na 2x napunch yung lotion. i told the cashier na isosoli ko yung isa. kaya lang credit card ginamit ko so i had no choice but to buy na din the other lotion. sinabi ko sa cashier na pasalamat sya at lotion lang yun kasi kung mas mahal ang worth nun definitely di ako bibili ng 2 items na 1 lang naman ang kelangan ko! and the cashiers also have a habit of saying, "ma'am kulang ng 25/50 cents or piso, ok lang?" imagine kung 100 customers kulang ng piso ang sukli, 100pesos agad yun. ilang beses na ko nabiktima nun, and iba't ibang branch pa. na-witness ko din na sunud-sunod kami na kulang ng piso yung sukli.tsk..tsk...

  61. Let's do the math for 1 supermarket. If they overcharge an average of PhP 500 on one hour in one check out counter, and let's say you have 20 check out lanes for one supermarket, that is 10,000 pesos easy money for one hour. Multiply by 10 hours, you get 100,000 pesos worth of sales a day without selling anything. So in one week, you are making 700,000 pesos out of nothing. In a month you are making a clear 2.8 million pesos just for overcharging your customers. Multiply it by the number of supermarkets all over the country (100 maybe?). That is 280 million pesos a month just for overcharging alone. That means it came out of nothing! And the funny thing is the 500 for one lane is a very low estimate.......

  63. They've got it all, maybe that's why they can get away with it hehe. To be fair to this mega-chain, other groceries and department stores suffer from the same malady.

Another practice I hate of retailers in general is when they go on sale, they hike up the regular prices so that old regular price is now the new sale price. Like this chain of bath and cosmetics products championing fair trade and other churva; I used to love their products lalo na the satsuna body wash and olive body butter. When I was a student I would save for these lil luxuries, I would wait for their 40% off. So a big tub of body butter costs around 595 or 695, if they go on their 40% off sales I would buy a tub or 2. Then one day I walked in because they were having such a sale. I picked up a tub and saw the price was still 695 or 595. The SA proudly says "Ma'm naka sale po ng 40%, best seller po yan". So I asked if the 595 or 695 price was the sale price, and she affirmed. I was shocked! Sabi ko "Eh di ba this is the regular price talaga". SA was silent and couldn't reply. I never bought from that store again. And lately I noticed that nilalangaw na ung stores na to. Unlike before when may sale, chaos ensues (remember the glory days of Giordano sales? lol). Now wala na. They're perpetually on 40%, 50% and even buy 1 take 1 sales still nilalangaw.

  64. As a fashion label, we work directly with these guys. Sadly, maski tenants nila esp sa dept store nila, ginugulangan nila nang sobra. There's no fighting them either 'cause they're too big. Mauubos lang pera mo sa attorney's fees filing all those complaints and stuff.

  65. if i could just react on this issue, isa po kami sa suppliers ng department store chain nila, kami din po ang naglalagay ng mga tag prices sa items namin.. i'm not sure though kung yung gold toe na nasa picture ay consignment or outright.. if its consignment then yung supplier ang naglalagay ng sticker.. kung outright, then si store ang naglalagay ng price.. so in terms of the yellow sticker, si supplier na ang nanloloko dyan which is really bad.

well in terms of the supermarket, i dont know how it works there pero hindi lang naman si store ang may problema dito kung hindi pati yung supplier. lahat ng employees in their stores are hired by the suppliers except for the cashiers/outright personnel

    ReplyDelete
  66. Obvious if sino tong chain na to. Although i probably wouldn't be creating a scene to get my refund nor let the employee pay out of pocket. Kasi underpaid nga din mga yan, di ba??

    ReplyDelete
  67. maybe readers of FP should stage a protest against them? Or start a facebook page calling that we boycott their department store and their supermarket? It's too much. They don't regularize employees, and yet they overcharge the consumer. Napaka-anti Filipino naman nila. Wherever this family came from, maybe they should go back to their homeland, mapa-Switzerland, Austria, or China sila. We work hard for the peso we earn honestly, we pay our taxes, tapos dadayain lang nila tayo by controlling prices such as this? Sobra na! too Much na!

    ReplyDelete
  68. You know something like this happened to me at a shop in a high end mall. The punched price was higher that the tag price. The first time it happened, I have to let it go since the store manager said that they would have to deduct the price discrepancy from the cashier's salary. And then it happened for another 2 instances. Dun sa third time, inaway ko na sila. I kept the tags and the receipt, kaya lang na-Ondoy na kaya I don't have evidence anymore.

Grabe Ang Price sa store na 'to.

  69. My husband even got a photo of the time when they scanned two eggplants and the price at the cashier showed Php9,660! Since the price was glaringly wrong, we had the item changed. But imagine how many of those na Php5 or Php10 na masmahal sa display price ang nakakalusot?

  74. This also happens in the US. Whenever I'm visiting the US and buy at the supermarket, my brother tells me to always watch if what's punched matches the price tag because there's always an error. And also to double check your receipt after. It's quite a task but when it becomes a habit to check your receipts, it becomes easy nalang. So I also do it here in Manila, watching what appears on the cash register, and if what appears to be a price punched other from what i thought it should be, I tell them to remove the item.

  75. Mag Puregold na lang o Landmark, mas mura pa dun.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Tama 'yan. We should all be vigilant and be careful when we shop in this Super Market. I've heard the same story multiple times, that what is punched is higher than the price tag. Let's spread the word and share this article to others so that the public will wise up and hopefully stop shopping in this Super Market.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Aside from this, they don't return small change like 10 centavos, 25 centavos, etc. Imagine all the small change not being returned to customers. Syempre we customers are so wanton that we don't care. BUT WE SHOULD!

About complaining to DTI naman. Well, fyi, tao nila si SEC Greg Domingo. He was a former director of the company. So, Good luck!

  79. Dito lang naman sa bansa natin lokohan ang sale e! di talaga discounted yung prices. Kaya every time sale, please don't get fooled, familiarize yourselves with the price ranges so you'll know if the item is really marked down during sale.

  80. I bought something from one of their stores, tapos yung price niya 125.00, taka ako kasi alam ko 99.00 lang siya. I asked the saleslady, she said "Ah, ma'am, yung smaller bottle po yung 99.00, yang bigger size is 125.00 talaga". I know there's no bigger size, but since I was in a hurry, I went to pay for it na. After paying 125 for it, I continued walking inside the dept store, tapos nakakita ako SAME product 99.00 nakalagay. I called the saleslady na nagmagaling and went to the cashier and demanded for a refund. Si saleslady na nagmagaling naging defensive. "Ah, ma'am pag papalitan po natin ito pupunta pa tayo dun sa customer service sa taas, mahaba po pila dun at maraming tao." (discouraging me from replacing). I got more furious I told her "ikaw ang pipila hindi ako. Babalikan ko yung sukli ko mamaya". I took a picture of her ID para lang maensure na hindi niya ako tataguan. Nakakainis.

  84. Ah yeah they love that whole spiel na "ah pag ibabalik nyo, aakyat pa kayo sa nth floor tapos matatgalan po yun ma'am... mga 1 week". Leche sya, I still went (bought a watch and it broke in less than a week, wala nang same model to replace it). There was no line, no nothing. I just filled out a form and present my receipt. They kept asking me if I wanted GCs instead of cash--I said no, give me my money back. And they did. Took around 30mins. It only took so long din since they had to run back and forth to get the brand's supervisor or whatever to sign the documents.

I hate that they discourage you from complaining. It's our right. Ako, kahit sabihin mong matagal or walang mangyayari, I still complain. Most of the time, they do something about it naman. Actually, I don't think there was ever a time na walang nangyari sa complain ko. LAGING NAMAN MAY NAGAGAWA. So COMPLAIN COMPLAIN COMPLAIN.

That's why nung nag sale sila, na buking ko ang modus operandi nila na nilalagyan nila nang mas mahal na price tag (double the price tag) para kunwari half the price pero actually, regular price lang naman. They make it appear that it's 50% off by putting another price tag that's double the amount. Eversince that time, hindi na ako naniwala sa mga Sale at hindi na rin ako bumalik sa kanila.

  92. It probably is the modus operandi of the consignor and not the department store. Anyway, the management should discover this kind of modus operandi happening in their store. And, guys, can you imagine the power of the Super Market? Even the country's biggest consumer goods companies are at their mercy and can't do anything when the Super Market doesn't pay them in full (we're talking millions here, ok). 124. Dear FashionPulis.com

We are happy to let you know that since the time emails were circulated regarding our pricing, we have implemented storewide measures to improve our services even better.

We have been constantly updating our price signs to assure that these are aligned with that of the cash register. We have also been doing regular checking, and monitoring of the display alignment, completeness, and correctness of the shelf tags.

Our store personnel have also been well trained to handle inquiries and situations that may arise in relation to this, and in the rare occasions that this may happen, the lower price will prevail.

It is our company’s business direction to give the best service and value to our customers with integrity, and under no circumstances do we intend to deviate from this.

Should you have other concerns, you may email our Customer Service at SMCustomerSite@sm-shoemart.com or call us at 810-7777.

We will also be glad to accompany you in your next visit to our store, and hear more about feedback on our services.

Ito pa, you can never use BPI credit cards at their tenant terminals during sales. Kailangan from their bank lang. Tapos their new pakulo is the cinema pakulo. They tell you the ticket is 200. they issue you a ticket worth 200 pero they would demand 250 kasi package daw yun. either hotdog or popcorn lang at 50 na walang resibo. Paging BIR. Yung 25 cents din, wag kayong umoo sa kanila. always say no. Kung kailangan mong maghintay, hintay ka. i still shop at the department store pero. alam ko na, during sales, punta kayo tapos magtanggal kayo ng yellow sticker for fun tapos balik niyo dun sa pinagkuhanan niyo. hehehe. gawin ko nga sa susunod.

Also, tell your cashiers not to be offended when customers ask for their change, kahit singko pa yun dapat ibigay ng maluwag sa loob, I was witness to an incident when the customer asked for her change, the cashier rudely threw the coin on the counter top, the lady customer went ballistic, created a scene and asked for the supermarket manager.

I meant the Swiss Family "Robinson" (sabi ni FP make it creative kasi bawal daw ang initials) kasi di ko alam na yung Rihanna song pala ang salarin. I remember when I was a kid, my mom and I went to one of their branches along Makati and nadenggoy sya nung "Free Gift" scheme nila (I think we bought something and the voucher or something was with the receipt saying that we have a free gift as customers. Syempre, si mother napaniwala so we went pa dun sa 4th floor or something, basta malayo ang inakyat namin) only to find out that you have to purchase one of their jewelries worth 200 pesos (in those days, 200 is like 2000 ang value) so napikon si mama at sinabing madugas sila. Free Gift daw o! Nakow, eh baka pwet pa ng baso ang binebenta nilang jewelry na yun ano!

Kasi sometimes, mali din naman ang pagkabasa ko sa price that's why pag lumabas sa na scan na mas mahal sa price na inakala ko, I ask them to double check the price. Don't be shy to question the discrepancy, anyway you're the one paying. Maybe may tamed na employee who isn't doing the job on time.

It could be that the store managers in some of their branches screw up. Hence the flaws. Maybe it's time for them to re-evaluate their management people in all branches especially those that had complaints.

I'm not in any way connected to the Mgt and/or paid to comment. This is just my 2 cents.

    Mr. Scher,

What about the issues mentioned above: what you did to Colgate, Adidas, Nike and BPI? Must you monopolize everything? Must you own everything? What's the use in having tenants if you want to take over their businesses anyway? When will it be enough?

I (and my entire household) have boycotted all your establishments - malls, shops, pharmacy, dept. store -- even closed my accounts in your banks since mid last year because of your "bad business" practices -- we may be just one family, but if you continue to do bad business, there will be enough of us for you to feel the pinch.

No way are you "The Good Guys" -- you're the exact opposite.

  135. On the same note, yesterday, we bought 3 supporters (underwear) from this fashion retail store. This fashion retail store has this Moreno Actor (now married to a first-termer congresswoman)as their endorser for the longest time.

The 3 undergarments were priced at P189++. When we went to the cashier, the cashier asked us for 620php. I didn't really care for the amount then because I'm not that good in math and I trust the store. Good thing my bf pointed out that the total amount should only be around 567php. The cashier then said "ay nag-mark up ho pala". Imagine if we didn't ask? and how many items na kaya nila yun nag mark-up at na charge ang customer without them saying anything. I had recently stopped buying from this retail store because the owner is a staunch supporter of this TV Host/Comedian under fire for alleged child abuse. Now I will never buy from them again.

Bad practices in hiring employees are a HUGE sign of just how much this company is willing to really serve its customers. Taking extra effort, hours to change price tags and fool people? You have got to be kidding me. Hello DTI!!!

  138. I worked for a high end retail company. I handle 2 brands and one of my brands is sold in this department store. It's really difficult to deal with them. Well I understand naman kasi I know that the people working for that dept. store are working long hours even on Saturdays tapos under paid sila. But anyway, this is how it works, the dept. store announces to their consignors that they are going to have a sale, so they will require a change of price tags. So on our side (consignors), we'll make a new code (which is assigned by them) for the sale prices, then we submit it to them. On their side naman, they will update their system to match the code that we made so when they punch it on their POS, sale price na lalabas. We had so many issues about it kasi most of the time, tama naman yung codes namin, POS nila yung may mali. Kaya siguro may mga double pricing or wrong pricing. So I think dapat yung IT people nila sees to it that their system is working correctly 24/7. Unless, talagang sinasadya nila to earn extra income out of nothing.

Regarding the tagging, that I don't know. Kasi when I was handling that brand, I know that our people are the ones who do the re-tagging. Wala naman kaming nakuhang reklamo from our customers. It really depends on the brand unless outright siya or owned by the dept. store mismo. I hope DTI will do something about this.

***Kaya pala siya na ang richest person in the Philippines now. Haha! Baka pati yung mga condo double priced din! LOL!

  147. Hi I am a businessman who has a catering service. I buy from this SuperMarket. Good thing is that I am concious in pricing when buying food. Same thing happened to me when I saw that they charge me more than the price per kilo of carrots. I did the complain and thus the problem was resolved. After a few weeks, I went to purchase my groceries and there again the problem has re-surface. It's a nightmare.
I also have purchase a property from the said company. Of course they have it all right. Since I have paid all my initial deposit I opt to avail of their bank financing which is of course owned by the business tycoon family. After a year, I learned that I have a penalty of 20,000 ++. That is why they have not turned over my unit in katipunan facing ateneo and miriam college to me. I should have known better than to trust this SuperMarket company. All the businesses they have have hidden agendas to cheat of their customers. Maybe cheating their customers all these decades made them the riches family in the Philippines. And to note, their bank is the only bank I know where they charge you for every single service like a simply encashing a check that is issued from a different branch. Buti pa nag bpi, metro bank, etc. Tsk tsk I thought they were finding ways to make your life better as their slogan says.

unfair labor practices? talaga? may officemate ako dati na previously nagwork dito, nung nagresign daw sya to transfer to our company ni counter offer daw sya ng P30, haler? iritang-irita daw sya, awang awa daw sya sa sarili nya nung nagwwork sya dito, isa lang daw pc sa buong dept at mga bangko lang daw ang upuan nila (accounting dept)

what I heard naman from a friend from San Miguel is sobra daw magcharge etong SM sa mga nagbbenta ng products sa stores nila, halos wala naman daw kinikita ang san miguel or other companies dito, for branding lang daw, dahil sa mahal maningil

  149. I worked for a company that supplies imported/branded products to SM. We always tried to price our products competitively against U.S. retail prices and that of other Asian countries.

But with the percentage that SM wanted from us (+ marketing fee, storage fee, listing fee, etc), lugi na kami. So SM always tells us to just increase our retail prices so we (our company and SM) will both be happy. (But we can't since we supply to other dept stores also) Eh paano na yun consumers?! In short, SM doesn't care about YOU.

We work with them because we have to. But we HATE them. Most companies supplying SM do not earn from doing business with them and consider SM as a "marketing expense". Coz if you are in SM, sikat nga brand mo...pero di ka talaga kikita.

We understand that they have to protect their business but we feel sobrang suwapang na nila.

  150. I agree with JUNE 11, 2011 2:46am comment. WE usually use them as Marketing expense only because people really go to SM and you want your brand to be KNOWN (POPULAR). So we use SM (lugi) but bawi nalang sa iba. :)

  151. Our maid just recently bought something as SM Hypermarket. The price indicated in the shelf was P265.50 but when she was about to pay the price reflected in the cash register was P279.75. She brought the discrepancy to the attention of the cashier but the latter did not do anything. She was still charged the higher price.

I was later able to talk to the assistant store manager, Nina Mayoyo. She CONFIRMED that part of the shelving was improperly tagged. She, however, gave the excuse that the other parts of the shelves were properly tagged. Why should I have to look at all the tags? Is this their way of luring customers to their store?

The price difference may be small but multiply this to the number of customers they have a day and this will amount to a pretty substantial sum.

We noticed the discrepancy today because we bought only 1 item. If today was grocery day, we would have no way of remembering the correct price for each and every item we are buying.

Thank you you FashionPulis for bringing these incidents to the attention of the public. I should have been forewarned after I read this blog article last month.

    Never again, SM Hypermarket.

  152. They're notorious for overcharging and really getting everything they can from their suppliers. They will take your largest-selling items off the shelf and companies must pay millions of pesos just to get their products back on-shelf. They will mandate trade support in the millions of pesos every year, labeling that cost "merchandising programs" or such. Kudos to Colgate for pulling out! Being prideful, this chain imported Pepsodent and filled their toothpaste shelves with this brand. For the toothbrushes, they replaced them with some other brand. Eh wala, sales apparently suffered because Colgate is still the preferred. Last I heard, this chain sent feelers to Colgate to get them back. Pero last I heard ulit, Colgate's bottom line is so much better by not being in this chain. (But I don't know if they're back in this chain.)

They image is that they're cheap, but actually this is the game they play daw: they price commodities like rice and sardines a bit cheaper, and overcharge on everything else -- so people think they're cheaper. And to think they MANDATE a higher discount from their suppliers and then price themselves higher pa.

But I think this conglomerate won't survive the third generation. I hear the grandson from the second son is an entitled nincompoop. Good luck!

I would like to suggest na their be a union org of mostly suppliers here in the philippines to able to protect the suppliers as well. para fair lang dapat ang hingiin ni SM, hindi yung sapilitan sila kung humingi.

  157. eto ba yun drugstore/personal items store din? haay nako! I've been cheated twice but its my fault din that I didn't check. First instance, they overpunched a napkin. i bought 2 and they punch 3. then I bought 2 boxes ng Fitrum na dapat 3 pads each box only to find out kulang ng 1 pad. these happen all in 3 days. Pls be careful sa mga stores nila.

  158. Hmmm, I actually seldom do my grocery in this notorious Hmart - I've known even then that this fruit-named grocery is the cheapest I can go to - lucky enough that one is near wehere I work. Unfortunately since Ch (actually HTop as well) does not have a lot of outlets unlike this SuperManloloko mart, I have to resort to go to the said mart. Pero I let it pass whenever the cashier is short on a few centavos.

But after reading this.. Ay, NEVER! Most items pa in their grocery do not have price tags!

New Habit to do: get a pen/paper Or type it on ur phone the shelf cost of each item. Compare it while they scan it.

  159. Hey everyone! O diba after so many months I went back to this post. Actually I am working for this company, and yes we dont really get paid that much, but according to labor laws naman, lets just say this company expresses generosity in other ways than by monetary means. Actually the above complaints are ALL against company policies, believe me. However discrepancies do happen because the branches are owned by different franchisees of the chain, and not by the original family. So alot of what is going on on different branches are their own discretion. I am happy to say that we do not have this on our own provincial branch as our management is uber meticulous on these things. However, the sad part is, all branches carry the same name, and one bad rep reaches across all. This is understandable, although sad :(

  160. this is a huge issue, sana hindi na lang itago ang name ng mga stores kapag ganito kasi baka mas madami pa maloko.

  162. ganyan talaga ang mall na yan. from the very top management to its minions. pakiramdam nila hari sila at kaya nila gawin kahit anong gusto nila gawin. walang papalag o magrereklamo. and this is not limited to their malls and supermarkets, pati sa bank and real property development. to hell with laws and regulations.
