Irritating and Annoying

How many times have we heard of celebrity hosts being demanding at private events that they were hired to host? Too often these celebrities bank on their star status and feel entitled to make demands to the client which are more often than not, in bad taste. Among others, apart from demanding huge talent fees, these celebrities throw their weight around acting as if they have every right to do whatever they please.

This Has-been Comedian HC sometimes gets hired as a wedding host. To be fair, HC is a funny and entertaining host. In the eyes of his audience, he is good enough. But only very few know how a bitch HC is backstage. Too often, he wants a diva treatment, even in simple weddings, even if the groom/bride is his friend. HC is reportedly a coordinator's headache, making demands as if he is a big star. Others say that it is for such reason why HC has no career at all.

An Events Coordinator EC got instruction from a client to coordinate with HC whom the client hired to host his wedding. EC introduced herself to HC and confirmed the event. A week after, EC called HC again and asked for his email address. HC said that he will text message EC for his email, but he never did. EC was not that bothered as she assumed that HC was a professional host, and even surmised that he was an expert wedding host. But few days after, EC was surprised by a call from HC ranting, asking why she was not coordinating with him.

EC kept her cool and even assured HC not to worry as there was a program or guide that she was going to send him and it was a very simple, no brainer wedding program. But only after he ranted did he himself cooperated and give his email address to EC. That is how HC conducts himself.

At another time, HC was a host again at one of EC's events where he came in late, and again EC didn’t make it an issue. But what got her was that HC brought with him 2 "alalays" which he didn’t confirm with EC beforehand. At the event, HC wanted a VIP treatment again and asked for a talent coordinator, meaning someone who would attend to his every whim – or to be more accurate, demand.

EC and her team were so flabbergasted at the shamelessness of this guy who did not have any iota of the basic proprieties of his profession. He was even asking for a full dinner for him and his alalays ahead of everybody even when the wedding had not started yet.

That feeling of celebrity entitlement baffles most event coordinators, more so if the one asking for it has long lost his shine, or in other words, a has-been. Such is CH's character and reputation, which is why even his friends have no sympathy for him and do not hire him to host their parties and events.

‘The Gates of Hell’ and Other Quotable Quotes from 2013

“You don't do that to me. Saan po kayo kumukuha ng kapal ng mukha? I can buy you, your friends, and this club."

Compressed into a single line of dialogue, three of our choices for quotes of the year can comprise a classic catty put-down in a movie.

Maybe it's because the three different individuals who uttered them – a show host, the President, an actress – were all in apparent fits of pique, for totally different reasons.

Irritation is a common emotion behind some of our quotable quotes of 2013. Others were just clinical but telling declarations of fact, such as Erap's sobering reminder to the public that he is the first ex-convict to become mayor of Manila.

The news media used to be the main arbiter for the quotes that capture the spirit of our times, but no longer in the age of social media. Many of these quotes first found traction on Twitter and Facebook, which put a premium on short bursts of text that can be instantly shared. YouTube enables memorable utterances to be watched ad nauseam even before the news media catches on.

One may wonder why Sen. Miriam Santiago did not make the cut, as she is, of course, always quotable. With her outrageous verbalisms, the queen of one-liners seems consciously aiming to be included in year-end lists like this. We decided to leave her off our list this year, to give others a chance.
