I am an avid reader of your blogs and it makes life fun especially to those people like me who are not really into following the showbiz world.
I would like to share the experience I recently had in our Terminal Airport because I really wonder why we promote the tag line: “It’s More Fun in the Philippines.” Is it really fun? I guess the government/DOT should fix our tourism first before using this tag line.
When I got back to the Philippines, I experienced the following that made me think of how much the government needs to work to provide truth to the tagline.
- We waited for about 15 minutes inside the plane because the ground crew was still looking for an available ladder.
- Terminal 1 really needs renovation. Its age, smell, and small size add stress to being in the airport.
- When I got my 2 pieces of luggage of about 50 lbs each, nobody helped me to get it from the conveyor (unlike in the US, someone helped me immediately).
- The custom officer rudely asked if I had things to declare. When I said I had nothing to declare, he asked where I came from. I replied I came from the US. Then, he retorted with, "Ano mga binili mo sa US? Ano laman ng bagahe mo? Ang laki ng bagahe mo wala kang ideclare?"
- While I was in the toilet, I overheard a conversation between a worker and a passenger. After her sad story, the passenger gave her five Canadian dollars, to which she replied with, “puwede na po ito sir.” The toilet is so small that I could not bring my cart inside and there was no air conditioning.
- While I pushed my heavy cart towards the exit door, five male porters were waiting. One of them said, "patulong ka na, konting pera lang naman yan. Di makakabawas yan sa dollars mo!" By this time, I was very frustrated already. I did not say anything because I was so tired and sweating too much.
- When I was waiting for my ride, I felt sad how the waiting area looks like. It is such a shame for foreigners and balikbayans. I remember there was a couple on the same plane I rode saying they were excited to go to the Philippines for their much-awaited vacation and it was their first time. I wonder how they felt when they reached the airport.

palagay ko isa ka sa mga empleado sa airport. kapag ganyan ang pag uugali nating mga pinoy , ano mang effort ang gawin ng mga leader ng bansa naten wla rin! ikaw ang nega... esep esep... ang taong open minded at open for growth ay open din sa critism contructive man or destructive. kelan matutuwid ang mali kung tatahimik lang db?

DeleteIt is what it is. You shouldn't let the airport's condition and employees ruin your vacation. If you act like you mean business and take their names to report them natatakot rin sila. I asked for supervisors pag ng hihingi ng pera .Sometimes kung suplada ka mas takot sila.
DeleteAsan ang nega dun? its all FACT. mabaho, madumi, at "karamihan" ng staff sa airport eh nagdidilihensya sa ibat ibang paraan. Cguro d ka pa nakaranas na magbalikbayan kaya d mo pa naranasan.

Totoo yan! Mother ko yan din reklamo everytime aalis at dadating ng pinas. Rude ang ilang empleyado ng naia (sana yung iba hindi) lalo na sa mga ofw walang respeto pero kapag foreigner hay naku agawan pa sa pagsalubong at pagalalay sa bagahe.

Ganyang mentality ang dahilan kung bakit walang pag-unland sa bansa, nakuntento tayo sa mga ganyang bagay wag lang masabihan na walang pagmamahal sa bansa. BUT... this is a big BUT.... nasa pilipinas ang family mo and this is the NO. 1 factor kung bakit masaya kapag nasa pinas ka, plus mura ang mga food, clothes are much cheaper, for that matter everything is definitely inexpensive...
so next time, don't be such a snob...

Deletei was also taken aback by #3 on the list, "no one helped me get my luggage from the conveyor belt." uhmm, if you've traveled to other countries dearie they don't help you with the luggage from the belt either. my 12 year old girl gets her own luggage from the belt if it isn't too heavy. i agree with you on other points but the #3 one seems a little bit spoiledy to me.

I would be happy if a heavy bomb detonated inside it and completely obliterates it just to rid ourselves of this eyesore and corrupt employees.

Deletegusto kasi mag yabang sa relatives and friends na balikbayan sya...haha yan ang sinasabi kong masyadong mayabang minsan. Naka tungtong lang abroad, no matter how brief the stay may be, akala mo na kung sino pag balik dito. Malalaking bagahe screams "hey pansinin mo ako, galing ako abroad" so there, pinansin ka nga ng customs haha =)

I don't think it's wrong to expect that we could do so much better-- in terms of facilities and service in the airport. Sana before we spread the word that "it's more fun in the Philippines" eh we fix ourselves first.
ReplyDeleteSuper true ito! Napaka rude ng mga officials sa customs lalo na sa naia 1. Laging tanong eh kung bakit ang laki ng maleta mo at bakit ang dami mong binili... In a very rude manner! I remember there was thus rabbi next sa amin sa linya at kinakausap nya ng carabao english syempre au rabbi na fireigner ay hindi masyado naintindihan.. Aba si customs nagmura! Sobrang na awa ako sa rabbi kasi di nya alam na minumura na sya. Too bad we werent able to get the official's name. But i remember his face he was short guy na medyo stocky.
ReplyDeleteI relate with point number 3. It was already past midnight when we arrived in the Philippines so we are already exhausted from the trip. There was nothing to declare from my side but the customs officer insisted on opening our bags for inspection. I know it's part of SOP but the officer's attitude is not tolerable. He treats me as if I'm up to something.

sa dami ng nabasa kong reklamo regarding officials and employees inside the airport parang wala akong nabasa na nag-submit ng letter sa NAIA Admin. or even sa Customs Admin. para sa kanilang mga reklamo nila at mga observation nila sa airport or rather ask for the names of those crook employees or officials then why not directly address your issues to Gen. Honrado so that mabigyan leksyon ang mga yan. i know kapag pinangalanan nyo ang mga taong nirereklamo nyo may kalalagyan mga yan.
DeleteI dont think s/he is nega. But clearly the experience was.. if government's attention is not called then di talaga magiging FUn sa Philippines. Personally I brag about our country to my foreign friends but when I see OUR poor discipline for example in throwing trash, abiding traffic rules etc.. makes me embarrassed. I must say Change is much more FUN anywhere not just in the Philippines!
ReplyDeletethis is very true. especially to foreigners. my cousin came here last year it was her first time, she's half american but she speaks filipino. she couldnt find me so she asked help from the porters. 2 of them helped her. she had a thousand peso bill and a 500 with her. when she was abt to give them 500 pesos they refused. the porters said they want the thousand. she told them thats enough but they insisted for a bigger tip cuz they will split it into two. she got annoyed cuz they wudnt stop so she just gave them the 1000. its scary to ask help when ure at NAIA. u have to pay for evrything. from the guards, to porters. even taxi drivers. they alreaady charge you a lot but they still ask for a tip once they drop you home. NAIA needs an overhaul. not just the airport itself including all the workers. kaya dapat pg nasa Naia ka lagi ka may barya para kung ayaw tanggapin ang barya barya bahala sila!!!

ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that. Its not tahat the writer is being negative. She or he is just stating facts. I also travel but usually arrive at terminal 2, which is okay. Medyo hindi nakakahiya. Ang nakakalungkot lang nga yun mga immigration and customs officials na sobrang maangas at kurakot. I could go on and on, but wont help na stating whats been the normal occurrence among the travellers or balikbayans to our country.

There was one time i arrived at Terminal 2. Everything went well except when i got out of the airport. The guys at the exit made an inappropriate racial remark in Tagalog thinking i was Japanese or Korean and i told them that i understood what they said and reprimanded them not to do that to actual foreigners. As in wala talagang kaayusan! Parang asal sa bahay and work walang pagkakaiba. Parang laro laro lang lahat.

Pwede pa yung mga kapangitan talaga ng airport, trulili, kailangan ng major renovation in fairness. Ako kasi, ang prinsipyo ko sa buhay, no matter how long i've been away from Pinas, as soon as i step home, pak! Pinoy agad ang suot kong personality never akong umasta na different, harutan agad to the max sa mga personnel ng airport from the supervisors down to the janitors, i guess, this way nawawala ang opportunities of corruption kasi naaliw lang sila, happiness lang, kaya it's more fun in the Philippines!

DeleteKorek! Ilang beses na rin ako umuuwi sa pinas and di na ko nageexpect ng mataas din naman. Siyempre wala pa tayo sa standards ng ibang developed countries but i stay positive that we'll get there someday. Actually nung umalis ako 2 weeks ago sa pinas sa naia 1 nasurprise ako at in fairness friendly LAHAT ng tao kasi di rin naman ako nagiinarte pag nakikipagusap. Walang paenglish english. Pinoy naman tayo eh. Ang problema kasi sa ibang balikbayan eh halata naman na noypi yung accent eh trying hard pa magenglish, tuloy yung mga employees dun sa naia eh im sure naiirita din. Magpakanatural na lang kasi ok? Kahit ako rin naiirita sa mga maarteng balikbayan na reklamo ng reklamo tulad netong letter sender. Isa kang prime example ng taong pilit pinapabagsak ang self esteem ng mga pinoy. Magbasa ka ng Bob Ong baka may matutunan ka.

DeleteAbout customs na try nyo na ba dumaan nothing to declare sa abroad then binara kayo? It doesnt mean mean dadaan kayo nothing to declare hindi na kayo i check. Based sa experience ko sa milan tinanong nga ako paalis ako pero may custom officials kung magkano pera ko. Sinagot ko lang around 200 euro na lang kasi paalis na ako europe.

I think were the only country who pays for the terminal fee eh! super hate ko yang NAIA 1 na yan. maraming nakakainis na tao diyan! tapos sasabihin nila its more fun in the Philippines? really? it is?
ReplyDeleteSuper true, tayo lang ang may terminal fee na tinatawag..nakakahiya.last dec i came home with my italian fiance so after 2 days of stay in our home we went to boracay and he was so surprise we need to pay 250 pesos for the domestic flight.we paid and when we already past he wispered 'i've been to all part of europe,i ve been to US aand south america. And remember we went to africa,but this is the only country i paid this so called terminal fee' geez! Nakakahiya.

DeleteThese unacceptable things that everyone is saying here have been going on in NAIA ever since it was still known as MIA!! Sad to accept pero yun ang totoo.. Too many attempts to change things around was to no avail.. Huwag na tayong umasa na mababago pa ito dahil katulad din ito ng marami sa mga namumuno sa Pilipinas ngayon!! Sabi nga ni ate Guy... It's not really fair to generalize how fun or not fun it is here just by the airport. I think it's fun here, it just starts beyond the airport for most people.
The point of the letter writer is that FIRST and LAST impressions are IMPORTANT. Just like when you meet a person.

Haven't you noticed, it looks like everyone at the airport has a racket from the lowly vendors and luggage porters all the way up to management. They are all leeches waiting to suck the life out of you.
I agree... well naia 1 needs to be improved naman talga.. never had problem with porters... customs naman never really had a problem with them.. but i do hear kwentos about them...
Deletehave you been to LAX na rush hour.. just as bad.. one time there were too many lines just to get to your boarding area... although the airport itself is way better. have you been to the train stations / airports in europe.. just the same... in hongkong and macau the taxi people won't help you with your luggage ...

Ang point lang dito kung i question ka sa custom sa abroad kaya mo kaya i argue? It doesnt mean kung sa nothing to declare ka dumaan d ka na i check. Feeling mo corrupt agad sila na baka ikaw mis o may dala ka talaga kahit taxable hindi mo dineclare. Difference is sigawan or make magkatwiran ka lang go na dito sam atin. Do that sa ibang bansa tingnan natin if you can argue the custom officials even sa nothing to declare ka pa pumila

DeleteSa totoo lang i can't relate sa happenings sa loob ng airport but i've heard na totoo un. About sa slogan na lang comment ko. Paano magiging more fun dito kung maraming masasamang elemento kaliwa't kanan? Ung asawa ko umuwi from the US last month at kinukumpara nya ung security at safety na naramdaman nya nung nsa US sya kesa dito. Sana lang bago ginawang slogan yan inisip muna ng DOT kung mismo ung taga Pilipinas are REALLY HAVING FUN IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY.

Although I agree with you that something should be done to these corrupt officials at the airport and the way they run the airport, I also think that it's not right to compare our airports here with that of the US. We are a third world country and the US is a first world country. I'm not saying that being a third world country is a reason or even an excuse to have these incidents at our airports but still, we really should not compare. You cannot expect a third world country to be like a first world country.

Pa share share ka pa jan eh ganun naman talaga katagal yung baggage especially if madaming planes na dumating duh! it shows na first-timer traveler ka hahaha kaloka naisiksik na naman ang sarili nya. can you ban people like these from your blog fp? considering the letter that she sent you a few months ago...nagpapasikat lang to pls do not tolerate this person

With all the OFWs and Pinoy Immigrants all over the world, I guess word of mouth should be good enough marketing strategy. I hope they just allocate the money they used for marketing into actually improving the airports.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, although we can't avoid to link the tagline with the airport, the DOT has absolutely nothing to do with airports as it's beyond their jurisdiction. All airports are under the DOTC. Thus, DOT cannot use their budget to improve airports. The purpose of the DOT is to promote tourism through marketing. Other agencies such as the DOTC (Transportation and Communications) and DPWH are the ones in charge of infrastructure.

ReplyDeleteI can relate to this since this is exactly I had experienced when I went home last year, it is so sad and to add insult to the injury when I go back to Canada one of my co-employee told me that she just heard that Philippines has the worst airport in the world, I can't argue with that since it is true :(
ReplyDeletethis is so true!!! sa airport 3 times na ko laging nawawalan ng bagahe! far out! laging ako yung last na lumalabas ng airport kasi lagi akong waiting, i had to scream na wala naman laman yun puro pang arte lang then ilalabas nila! i swear totoo yan fp! and sa customs theyre very rude! super rude! and sa phil airlines yung mga stewardess mga snabera! mataas pa mga ugali kesa sa lipad ng airplane! eww!

ReplyDeleteminsan katakot naman mag ask help ng airport personnel, lalo na if balikbayan, kasi most often they would expect na magbibigay ka ng pera after they will help you. unlike sa other countries, meron talaga mag assist if makita nila na nahihirapan ka with the luggage. personal experience lang, i went to HK with a 10month old baby. sa HK airport, meron tumulong sa akin na kunin ang baggage ko, kasi karga ko ang baby ko. pag dating ko sa pinas, pagkuha ko ng baggage, karga ko pa rin baby ko, pero naka tingin lang ang airport personnel sa akin, walang willingness to help.

This is not something unique only to the Philippines. I won't anymore mention which countries because it would get me into trouble but FACT is it happens even in other airports abroad. I understand how you feel. Believe me I had my share of airport stories. But to equate the Airport with the whole Philippine experience? Seriously?!
A lot of foreigner friends come here to visit and they complain about the airport but that is just that...the airport. Then they rave about how they enjoy the beaches, love the food, love the people, etc. Look at the bigger picture and the ask again the question.

DeleteI totally agree that the Philippine government really needs to renovate and fix its problems first in the airport and educate its employees. It is embarrassing to foreigners and it will be a pride of the Filipinos if the airport is presentable.
ReplyDeleteAng isa pang numero unong problema jan bukod sa facilities at mga nagkalat na mga personnel na mahilig maghingi ng pera sa mga turista at balikbayan yung mga customs at immigration officials ang aangas kala mo kung mga sinong mataas. Feeling superior. Madalas wala sa lugar at abrasive ang demeanor. Dapat mag undergo sila ng training nakakainis pag ganun ang dadatnan mo pag uwi mo sa pilipinas.
ReplyDeleteMike..this is one of the best post. I want the Philippines to prosper but sometimes it really takes hard work, not just a mere cool slogan. I mean the slogan is GREAT but for it to be really fun, they should fix everything first or at least a minor improvement. Parang they went the easy route para lang may masabi na may ginagawa sila pero dapat mga back job muna bago itong slogan. It becomes such a false advertising especially for first time tourists. Compare the airport experience here and in HK..it's so like heaven and hell.
ReplyDeleteThe people working at the airport should be all fired in my opinion. Most of them are rude, old and unfit for the job..there needs to be a certain degree of professionalism which they lack.
Also, transportation to the different tourist places should also be improved.
I just hope maaksyonan na nila soon yung airport para wala na ganitong batikos. Di na ako choosy..kahit simple paint job and change of light bulbs to higher watts para mas maliwanag pwede pwede na for the meantime.
i experienced the same as well... went home for christmas some years ago and just outside the exit door, people were pulling my bags in different directions. few of them were harassing me & my sister for some cash and wouldn't leave us alone! it was such an ordeal experience. that was the last time we flew into the country by Manila. now, we flew straight to Davao via Singapore airlines. airfare is a lot more expensive but its hassle-free. staff are nice and courteous to all passengers and never pushy. Davao airport/immigration officials are respectful and never rude.

Hindi naman sa airpot lang umiikot ang buhay sa Pilipinas. Hindi dahil may aberya lang sa airport, eh hindi na agad appropriate ang slogan. If you're a tourist, paglabas mo ng airport at pagpunta mo sa Boracay, Palawan, Bohol, o kung saan mang tourist destination, it's more fun in the Philippines. If you're a balikbayan, paglabas mo ng airport at pagkita mo sa mga kamag-anak mo, it's more fun in the Philippines.
ReplyDeleteOld issue na 'yan, hindi na dapat ulit-ulitin. What we should all do is help. I-encourage ang mga friends abroad to visit our country, hindi nga maiiwasan ang airport, pero hindi naman yun ang ultimate destination nila.
kainis nman nito.. i've had a much more terrible experience in NAIA1 last year... na offload ako twice bcoz of those stupid immigration officers ang babastos! pinayagan na ako pumasok ng boarding gate abah pinabalik ako at binawi pinunit pa boarding pass ko! bwisit na bwisit ako nun pra akong pinaglaruan,i can't help but to break down and cry while im talking on the phone with my mom , sitting in the office of the airline to wait for my baggage to be returned.. sorry to say this but even them are corrupt not just gov't officials...and same thing happende to my sister last night she's off to SG, but then her 11k round trip ticket was gone for nothing kc pinahirapan dn xa dun,1 mabait immigration said, "papayagan din pla pinahirapan pa"... so the plane already took off by the time she got permitted... my sister got no choice but to buy another ticket worth 12k each... what a disgrace.. worst airport ever, with worst immigration officials.

DeleteWhile i agree that NAIA Terminal 1 needs some work, the times i have been back and forth to the Philippines, i have never been treated badly or thought i was offended by any NAIA personnel. I just came back this holiday season after a year, almost every year na nga. I noticed though, mas maarte pa ang mga balikbayan kaysa mga tunay na foreigners. How you present yourself is how you are going to be treated. Case in point, gesh, wag magdala ng baggage na hindi nyo kayang buhatin. Dress for the occasion, hindi kayo pupunta sa party, baka naman mukha kayong super yaman sa outfit nyo kaya akala ng mga NAIA personnel milyonarya kayo. Baka naman LV bag ang dala nyo, syempre, ako rin, aakalain ko may binili pa kayong gucci. Travel light if you don't want to be hassled. I had one 50 lbs luggage, a 35 lbs and a backpack, that's it! I carry a backpack, i wear a t-shirt and a walking shorts when i am in the Philippines, hindi ako pinapansin, hehehe, well, unless, gusto nyo rin kayong pansinin ng mga tao dahil nga you are better than them now. Assert yourself when it's needed only, otherwise, don't come to a third world country then. Para naman kayong bago ng bago, mas surprise pa nga yata kayo kaysa sa mga tunay na foreigners, wag masyado OA and don't sweat the small stuff!
ReplyDeleteWhile the writer's observation is true about the NAIA needing a major renovation and some employees need to be given a crash course on basic good manners, I would like to just state the following things:
ReplyDelete1. The Philippines is not the United States of America so comparisons are very unfair. Basic fact, that latter is a first world country and the former isn't thus making it obvious that one has the funding to continuously improve both facilities and employee-customer relationships.
2. When you complain about porters being rude, may I just point out that maybe because they think they can get away with it with you? I've never had that experience despite many travels because I simply say a firm thank you in turning down their offers and go about my way.
3. Your issue about waiting in the plane for 15 minutes? Simple reasoning will tell you it's the airline's problem, plain and simple. It happens even with foreign air carriers and problems with disembarkation isn't relegated to Philippine carriers.
Your only reason for writing this letter is just to make yourself look intelligent and show off that you're a balikbayan thinking that would impress people here. It's not only self-serving but quite pathetic as well seeing that you should prioritize improving your writing skills first before firing off letters such as this one.
Don't forget that hindi lahat ng balikbayan ay kinaiinggitan at hindi lahat ng naiwan dito sa Pilipinas ay kawawang nagsusuffer sa kung anong naiooffer ng bansa natin.

HUMIHINGI KA NG LAGAY? tingnan natin kung di tumigil mga yan sa hiya or kuyugin ng ibang pasahero. or better yet, be ready with your phone/camera and take a pic of these porters (tutal after immigration na sila makikita, pede na mag picture)!

Yes, it's still fun in the Philippines. This is an isolated incident. Do a Google Search and we'll also find a lot of visitor/tourism horror stories in other countries - yes, even including 1st world countries like the US. While I agree that we have a lot of room to improve, let's not forget that we can't control how each employee/Filipino behave.
ReplyDeletePlease understand that the campaign just started. Plans for renovation are just being made/finalized. I'm sorry about your bad experiences but changes will not happen overnight. Nabulok ng matagal, so it would really take time to scrub things clean. These rude and unprofessional people, these will be weeded out. I'm glad there are reports like this so the DOT secretary can see what's happening, but please don't doubt the spirit of the campaign and what it stands for. The airport needs work, true. The tourism industry needs work. But I hope these rotten apples don't spoil the entire lot. There are still good people out there and someday I hope that this will be the norm and not the exception. Amen.

We have the same sentiments. The first time i saw the new DOT campaign, i was not impressed because its totally an advertising of a product: The Philippines. It clearly shows kung saan talaga nanggaling si Jimenez.
My personal opinion actually is ganito: The Philippines needs a full Public Relations (PR) plan....PR is totally different from Advertising.
While DOT is implementing the PR plan, sana naman ung ibang sectors ng government ay aligned sa campaign ng DOT....from infrastructures (airport/seaport/lahat ng ports) to hotels/restaurants/and the like...
Pero we'll see baka me plan ang DOT pero bakit di nila ilatag sa publiko ang plano nila...

Yes! it's true that the airport needs to be fixed but having a bad airport doesn't necessarily erase the fact that we have a lot of other things to be proud of. Every nation has its own bad side. Customs officials, while not all, have a way of making you feel like you're a criminal bringing in something illegal from abroad. I have been travelling regularly and in an earlier incident, the customs official had the audacity to ask for some chocolates which I bought as pasalubong.
ReplyDeleteIt will be a dream come true to have people there who are truly friendly and can best embody what it feels like to have "more fun in the Phils". If rude conduct is what greets our tourists and balikbayans as soon as they step into our airport, the visitors' perception of the Filipinos would be gravely affected.
when i last visited, sa may exit door, "ma'am kahit pang kape lang." then when i was waiting for my brother, wala na pala yung A-Z sa waiting area. so hindi ako agad nakita ng kuya ko. i saw my brother (through the glass window) passed by sa 2nd floor ng bldg infront of the waiting area. biglang pinuntahan ng airport employee na kausap ko ang kuya ko. pagbalik nila ng kuya ko, guess what?? he asked for money. ok na sana e, kaso may bayad pala!
ReplyDeleteMy experience with customs and the airport in Manila was good. I was travaling there first time to meet my future wife. Married now! I had a diamond ring to declare and when I went through customs I choose a lady officer of the four agents lines. When I told her what I had she smiled looked around and whispered to me to just go go ! she was so sweet! Fun is what you make of it!

ReplyDeleteNAIA is one of the worst airports in the world, siguro next to paris hehe... the worst airports to get diarrhea, maabutan ka talaga habang nakapila sa toilets hehe. the facilities are sub-par, para kang nasa harrison plaza. at ang systema sobra ang red tape specially for OFWs, you need to go to diff counters para lang magpatatak ng kung anu ano, nakakainis! and to top up the worst airport experience, the immigration "officers" are either rude, walang pakielam, or walang alam. kahiya akala ko ba me plan na to improve this airport? sana gibain na lang at ilipat sa clark ang bagong airport, just like they did in KL or HK.
ReplyDeleteandun na po tayo sa mga dapat i-renovate sa Terminal 1, hindi po ganun kadali na mapaganda yan, ang mga officials ng airport pati mga empleyado guto itong mapaganda at ma-improve ng bongga, pero ang problema ang budget ng government. the NAIA management cannot decide on it alone. marami pang sangay ng government ang involve dyan. with regards naman sa mga employees na sinsabi nyong bastos or nangongotong, kuhain nyo mga pangalan may mga ID's naman yan e. then i-complain nyo agad sa proper authorities hindi puro sa forum lang. at kahit di nyo bigyan ng tip ang mga yan pwede di ka nila pwedeng i-hold sa airport dahil lang di ka nagbigay ng tip and pls lang naman wag nyong lahatin na ganun lahat ng mga government employees and officers, ang iba nga sa airport ay mga under agencies and underpaid. ang mga janitors 3 to 5 months contracts lang yan walang benefits. di na nga dapat intayin na manghingi sila kung ikaw naman ay madatung kusa na lang yun not only sa airport but anyone na sa tingin mo mas nakakababa sa estado nyo. spare the janitors.

i was at the PAL terminal a few years ago, and the lady inspected my purse and checked my wallet. she saw the leftover pesos that i had and asked me if she could have them since i was not going to use them. these are the kind of airport employees that bring shame to the tourism industry.

I once invited my sis-in-law to join me on a trip to SG, at the immigration counter my sis-in-law was asked a very irrelevant question - ANO TINAPOS MO? - duh! what's the relevance of that question? pano kung hindi nakapagtapos ng college hindi makakalabas? and they always ask for invitation letters when going to SG - it's an additional income for the PHL embassy in SG - kahit na ASEAN member ang SG and the SG immigration officers don't even care if you have invitation letters or not. haist! sana palitan na lahat ng nasa immigration counter natin at paki-re-educate before we invite balikbayans back to Pinas. alam ko sa mga foreigners mababait sila.
ReplyDeleteThis is true my cousin who saved for her vacation in SG was turned down and was sent home asking for letter of sponsorship from my sister, proof of relationship ( birrh certificate daw)... She was laughed at shouted at sa immigration
DeleteI've travelled to SG more than 10X na, all personal trips, and not once na hiningan ako ng invitation letter.. As long as you have roundtrip air tickets and just answer their questions directly and honestly (if ever nag-ask ng questions), then wala naman problema.
Deletejust want to share something about NAIA employee. during Mr. Cusi's management, one janitress was awarded and given commendation, kasi napansin nya na nagli-leak ang liquid soap dispenser at di agad madali i-request ang replacement, in her own disposition and own money bumili sya ng plastik na nalalagyan ng sabon na pinangsasahod sa nagli-leak na dispenser para di masayang ang liquid soap.

ReplyDeleteSure, our airport is not at par as other big airports but its not really horrendous. Admittedly, its needs a lot of improvement and there are plans to do so. A project as big as that will not happen overnight. So instead of dissing our country because of our airport, let's all look forward to our better airport.
More so, we should not generalize. There are rude people everywhere. There are rude customs officials in any country. I don't think its fair to imply that all if not most of our customs officials are corrupt and rude just because of a few unfortunate experiences.
A lotof the comments here are about the things people hate about our country. I've lived here all my life and though I see some of those things happening, I know that they are not regular occurences. I consider those unfortunate events that very seldom happen. I also know that those things can happen anywhere. I also observed improvements in the security of our country. The crime rate improved compared to years back when massacres were rampant. These are improvements that we often overlook because we are so focused on the negative.
Filipinos have a tendency to "hate" a lot of things about the Philippines. But seriously, do you think bad mouthing our country is going to help us improve? Why not think of ways on how to help us improve instead? Focus your energies on something productive. And be realistic. Do not expect instant transformation. We are not living in a dream world where everything can be perfect or just the way you want it to be. :)
you're right. i also can't help but notice that she mentioned that the people at the airport only go to work "to ask for money". it's not as if its going to their pocket. its not as if they have any control over those fees. tsk tsk..
DeleteActually, from my educated analysis (I won't expound on what right I have to use the term "educated", it's up to the readers to accept that I am or not), this is one of the key aspects as to why our country is so slow to develop. It's this False Sense of Entitlement (look the term up, it will show up in Google) that most Filipinos have that hinder us from helping ourselves. This phenomenon is quite common in members of families who used to be rich but are no longer. I guess that's exactly what we are, we were to be prosperous for a time, and now people can't quite accept that we aren't anymore, hence the sense of entitlement.

ReplyDeleteAgain, airport facilities are beyond the jurisdiction of the DOT. It's the DOTC that's in charge of airports (Department of TRANSPORTATION and Communication nga eh). I wish people would get their facts straight first before commenting. Besides, common sense lang please. Airports are not just for tourists. How about business travelers? Hence, they are not under the DOT.

I am based abroad and travel lot - in and out of the Philippines usually thru NAIA 1 to several locations abroad for 10 years+ now. so far, wala pa akong na-encouter sa mga sinasabi ng ibang commenters. like passing thru immigration and customs, wala pa naman akong bad experience. lucky lang ba ako? what i usually do is smile to these people when I pass thru and tell them nicely that I have nothing to declare and they can inspect my luggages if they want to. sometimes, binubuksan nila at nagte-thank you naman sila. ok lang, ganun talaga eh, sa ibang bansa, pinabubuksan din nila minsan.
ReplyDeletepansin ko lang sa ibang nakikita kong passengers, pagdaan nila sa customs nakasimangot na sila agad sa customs personnel, para bang naka-irap agad sila - at pag tinanong, rude din sila sumagot.
Well, I believe (and this is just a theory) that if you try to observe more, you'll see that the officials judge passengers based on their appearance. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you probably look well-educated and/or upper class. Unfortunately, those who are not as gifted physically will have a greater tendency of being victimized by rudeness and suspicion. I know this because I'm mestiso and I've never encountered the kind of behavior described here, while my more local-looking friends (who travel less than me, in fact) share their horror stories. Sad but true.

ReplyDeleteI'm also frustrated with your letter. Im not so sure if you are a frequent flyer or this is your first time to fly overseas thus you felt that way. A few points I just want to share. I am a frequent flyer and I have to disagree with some of the things mentioned.
1. We waited for about 15 minutes inside the plane because the ground crew was still looking for an available ladder. -- number 1 no airline specially if coming from overseas uses the ladder except if you flew with Cebu Pacific. they use the TUBE. FYI. That happened in most airports specially with busy passenger and aircraft turn around. It happens even in LA or in BKK. We landed in LA 25 minutes after the expected arrival time cause maraming dumarating and umaalis na plane and we had to wait for our turn + when we landed in LA we waited for Malaysian Airline to leave the tube so we can use it.
2. When I got my 2 pieces of luggage of about 50 lbs each, nobody helped me to get it from the conveyor (unlike in the US, someone helped me immediately). - nobody will really help you in NAIA unless you approach them and you tell them that you need help with your luggage. You are supposed to pay these porters and don't expect them to help you even if you're having a hard time with your baggage. Sa US baggage area those are not really porters wherein they get your luggage, those are the men assigned per carousel to fix the luggages when it gets to the baggage area.
You need to travel a lot for you to understand what I am talking about :)

dear anonymous 11:17pm, regarding your observation that no airline coming from overseas uses the ladder, FYI po i just came in via a PAL flight from SG for chinese new year and our plane from-to SG used the ladder. You can confirm PR 501 and PR 506. So tama ka you need to travel a lot to understanding what i am talking about.

agree ako diyan, nung una akong nagbyahe papuntang hongkong. wow sabi ko sa sarili ko ang ganda ng airport nila at ang laki. walang wala sa airport natin. ang lakas pa nilang manghingi ng terminal fee, e ang pangit naman ng airport. bagal pa ng serbisyo, bastos mga mukhang pera. pumapasok lang sila para maka hingi ng pera. well di ko naman nilalahat, i'm sure me malinis pa din naman pero mabibilang mo lang sa daliri. hay feeling ko mahirap ng baguhin ang nakaugalian na. kung maraming utak talangka paano tayo aasenso?

What is worst is that, these foreigners were doing documentary about the Philippines, about their stint and their adventure here. And now, the incident would be included in their documentary. Yeah right, so much for "It's more fun in the Philippines"

I completely agree! This comment makes the most sense so far :). We don't need a humongous airport like the one in Hong Kong (come in, it's probably 10x as busy anyway)nor as beautiful as Changi, but at least ours should be clean, orderly and with good service. Show true Filipino hospitality sa airport palang!

Some immigration officers at NAIA are rude and, sorry for the term, tanga. I was on my way to SG for a day trip to watch The Lion King. The officer asked me rudely "bakit ka pupunta sa SG? Maghahanap ka ng trabaho?" To which I replied, "may trabaho po ako dito. Manonood lang ako ng The Lion King." Eto ang hindi ko kinaya, she asked me: "Lion King? May pirated DVD naman nun."

Lawakan mo pls pangunawa mo. yung mga kinukuwento mong bastos sa #6, and binigyan ng dollars sa #5, i agree mali ang ginawa nila, pero siguradong mas angat ka sa buhay kesa sa kanila. Hindi ko sinasabing bawal kang ma-frustrate kabayan, pero mas nakatulong ka siguro kung sinumbong and nireklamo mo mga ito sa mga opisyal ng airport at customs, hindi dito sa fashion pulis. Madaming kailangan talaga isaayos sa lekat ng bansang ito, sana hindi na kasali dun yung pagiisip mo. Wag mo na din problemahin yung couple na first time lang sa Pilipinas, baka mas mas maintindihan pa nila kondisyon ng Pilipinas kaysa sa'yo.
ReplyDeletewow ! i had also a not so good experience at NAIA airport whereas my only luggage is a visible box of fruits and 2 bottles of ice wine i bought abroad which is obviously show as i walk pass through to the customs and have already said i had nothing to declare to the customs and yet the officer insisted me to stop by and took almost 5 mins. of questions and answers still they open the cover of the visible plastic while asking me where and how much did i buy the fruits and to whom i will give to them so i answered them nicely though the way they asked me i found it rude and to my horror one of them even get few of y fruits and even asked one of the officers if he wants to try it without asking me if it's ok to give some to them. Would it be really more fun in the philippines if these customs officers to this kind of incidents to the tourist of our country? :(

When I was in US of A, no one helped me in getting my luggages from the conveyor either. Punta ako ng UK, ganun din. Much more pag-pupunta ka sa mga countries in Asia where deadmz most of the time karamihan ng mga tao.

i agree with the sender it is really a nightmare at naia, sa mga nagsasabing NEGA bumili muna kayo ng ticket para makarating sa airport, seriously its really a shame, and i am not even proud to be pinoy for this matter, when i am abroad i would never say that i came from PI, i would say singapore or taiwan but never PI because foreigners mistook pinoys for maids... please dont curse or react violently because this is a sad reality...

DeleteI have the same sentiments as frustrated balikbayan. In as much as I love the Philippines, it's such a shame that some airport staff would only assist their passengers if there's money involved, whereas in other countries such things don't happen :( I understand that these employees have meager salary, but they need to remember why they were there in the first place. They were there to assist and ensure the safety and convenience of their customers. The thing is, they will only help you if you give them something in return and sometimes some staff are more blatant and would even name the price. The facilities are really awful and what makes it worst is PHILIPPINE airport charges terminal fees, while other airports don't and yet ours were named one of the worsts in the world! :( Just like what others are saying we don't need a highly sophisticated, state of the art facility, just something that's clean, organised and safe, something that every Filipino can be proud of!

ReplyDeleteI agree na napaglumaan na talaga ang NAIA1, the BClass lounges are crappy, etc. But don't compare naman with airports ng 1st world countries. Remember, we're still a 3rd world country. And, even CDG airport in Paris is pangit no.
Walang tumulong sa pagkuha ng luggage? Uhmm, bagahe mo yun, why would anyone automatically help you out? Ba't ka nagdala ng marami kung di mo pala kaya buhatin para malipat sa cart? Sana pina-cargo mo na lang ung iba. :)
Re Customs, i agree some are medyo rude. But i always talk to them ng maayos, straightforward answers sa questions, then tapos na. A little smile wouldn't hurt. Pag nagtaray ka kasi, they will think that you are hiding something or nagmamalaki ka porke't balikbayan ka. Minsan din kasi me mga balikbayan (minsan ha) na kung makaasta e kung sinong bida, porke't galing abroad.
I do agree na something has to be done sa arrival/meeting area. Ang sikip at ang gulo... Pero honestly, by the time na andun ako, ang naiisip ko na lang is: "i'm so happy to be home" so napapalampas ko na lang din. :)
It's more fun in the Philippines, kasi we miss our kapamilya and we enjoy every moment we have with them. But sadly, i find it more safe, clean and fun in my second home. Mahirap talaga i-lower ang expectations everytime you come home. You somehow expect the same thing that you're used to abroad. More, more, more improvements pa.
ReplyDeleteSa super pangit ng Terminal 1, I refuse to use any carrier now other than Cebu Pacific (I am based in Singapore). And I agree, ang susungit pa ng staff sa Terminal 1. I don't like the way the immigration officers talk to the other pinoys, kala mo kung mga sino. My heart always goes out to the pinoys in line na hawak-hawak lahat ng papers nila, visibly nervous when being questioned by the officers. Pero kapag foreigners na ang kausap kala mo mga maamong tupa. Hay nako, most of the time it's more fun in the Philippines if you're not a Filipino!

DeleteCentennial Airport doesnt accept dollar payment for penalties like overstaying. My brother and stepdad had to go out and have their dollars exchanged to peso pa. When i tried talking to the officer over the phone to make sure, she told me its their policy daw.

ReplyDelete--This occurred December of 2010 when I got back from the U.S. via PAL so Terminal 2 ako, i just couldn't forget how rude the Immigration officer was to me when I was queueing at his window when I arrived from L.A. Evening flight kasi ako from LAX so pagdating ko dito sa Pinas early morning at groggy ako so hindi ko napansin ako na pala next in line dun sa Immigration window, aba! ang mayabang na Immigration officer bigla ba namang sumigaw ng "Hoy, ikaw na next" para lagyan ng stamp passport ko, I was pissed off, I was so sleepy & tired kaya hindi ko napansin ako na pala ang next, pero bakit siya sumigaw at nag-"Hoy" pa?! And syempre hindi naman ako naka-business class so medyo masikip sa Economy kaya pagod ako that time. The Immigration officers at NAIA must be trained for proper etiquette!

Saka bakit hindi nila tinanggap yung proposal nina Kenneth Cobonpue.. they offered their services for FREE pero pinili pa rin ni Pnoy yung proposal nung dating designer ng NAIA! Malamang wala silang makukurakot at kickback kay Cobonpue that's why they dumped his proposal. Sayang!
ReplyDeleteSad but true. That's the culture of the Philippines. Uhm, I have friends who go, "Walang ganyan sa States" when they're here but I just shrug it off. We might think that they are living the life there but really, those are only in pictures. In reality, most of them have three jobs kasi ang daming bills. They cook their own food, do the laundry, etc. Hay, I still love my country despite its shortcomings. At least dito, kahit middle class, still living a good life pa rin.

ReplyDeletethere are a lot of horror stories about NAIA 1, at definitely may lagayan (bribery) na nangyayari. But you can't blame the DOT for trying to promote the country kasi ang dami naman talagang magagandang sceneries dito. It's really not about the airports and hotels and efficient personnel (although it also needs improvement), maybe the question is, are we being realistic about it? Let's say a foreigner visits Manila, do we know if he's here to see the view or to prey on young Filipino children? Yun ang nakakatakot, baka on the average, 7 out of 10 are here not to see the sceneries or for business but for another purpose. Yung ibang foreigners kasi iba ang tingin sa slogan na yan, 'it's more fun in the philippines' Now, do we have enough safeguards for our children/young women? Sadly wala eh. Tourism is so broad and that's reality. I dare anyone to go to Makati ShangriLa, maghang out lang kayo sa lobby or observe the restaurants. Yung mga foreigner may mga escorts yan and I felt really sorry, it's 5 star place pero may nangyayari pa ring ganyan.

amongst the three terminals, terminal 2 talaga ang pinakamagandang service kaso wala na ngayon kasi tinanggal ng pal ang mga tao nila. and downside pa, marami carnappers and kidnappers lurking sa terminal 2 (may sindikato malamang dun eh) kasi dun yung mga talagang mayayaman sumasakay.
it's really "more fun in the Philippines" nga......pero sayang nga naman ang tagline ng DOT kung pagpasok pa lng ng bansa naten eh nega na agad.....ang airports pa naman ang frontliner ng isang bansa....sana bgyan ng atensyon ng Gobyernong PNoy (as in PikonNoy) ang pagsasaayos ng NAIA....
