PALEA Strike: The Other Side of the Story

Outside NAIA Terminal 2

PALEA members being dragged out of NAIA Terminal 2

NAIA Terminal 2 Entrance

PALEA members at Our Lady of Parish

The truth is our fellow ground crew was not on strike yesterday. They are inside the airport very willing to work but their access to computer, phones, radios were  blocked by the management which caused chaos. How could these employees work without access to these equipment? Due to the situation, the management decided to cancel all the flights.

  1. this is so sad..i always ride PAL pa naman going to bacolod, ngayon i'm force to ride na sa cebu pacific kahit ayoko. no choice! :( sana maayos na nila problema na or someone will buy it na.

  2. wow just heard about this.. if they were not on strike where did the banners, flags and placards came from? they had it handy?

Well it was their choice to go on strike. We couldn't blame them. Its their future they are protecting.
    On the other hand PAL has also some priorities. Apparently, both sides did not try their best, I repeat, their best in resolving their issues.
    Someday, the striking members will realize that going on strike was wrong. They will not realize now. Maybe after a year or more, they will.
    I know. I've been there. And I regretted joining the pack.

  4. Kwawa nga empleyados but the fact is they are endangering Philippines.

  6. Are you serious?? Why would PAL take away their radios and other stuff? Ang gulo naman nila. And kawawa all the passengers.

  7. Where did you get that information FP? That is a complete lie. Yes, they weren't on strike, but they were "in Protest". No radios/computers taken out. I know this because I am (regretting) related to one of them. Too bad what you said won't win the hearts of the travelers stranded, the damage has been done...

  10. It is one of our constitutional right to join union. . .the employees are willing to work then why sabotage. . . Clearly pal is making a demolition job so that these employees would look bad. . .

  11. Sana maresolbahan nila agad dahil babyahe pa kami via PAL to attend a very important event.

  12. The worst law approved in the Philippines is the outsourcing law. Now, every company seems to be practicing this kind of employment since it would be so much cheaper for them but at the same time. The reality is though, PAL is not anymore competent in the market. It has been losing a lot of money which could probably be blamed on the bad management. I dont think PALEA has any fight against this. At the end of the day, its still the company's prerogative on what kind of employment scheme they want to practice.

  13. these are PURE LIES. I am one of the passengers waiting at around 6:30am yesterday. At around 7am, these PAL staff at the check-in stopped working & discontinued checking-in passengers... Naghahanap ng awa, nag-iimbento pa.. LOOSER!!!!

    One day lang nawala syo. Some of them has been with the company for more than 2 decades. They have the right to fight for that.

  17. Why would pal take away the radios and computers? Seriously? Pag ginawa nila yun, sila mawawalan ng income. The palea people just stopped working coz they were in protest. I was there. Walang police or pal mgmt sa airport. The palea people just left their posts. Yes, kawawa naman sila since mawawalan sila ng trabaho, but still at the end of the day, lucio tan owns the company, its his prerogative to choose his employment scheme, he is after all a business man, he's not running a charity, and its legal. Kawawa naman ang mga passengers na nagbayad. Some of them have impt engagements to go to or yung iba are going home sa family nila.

  18. Beggars cannot be choosers! PAL is losing a lot of money so if these PALEA members will add to the gravity of the financial condition of PAL, better not bring them back to work! I wouldn't blame PAL if they will just outsource eventually cause there are hundreds more of people who are willing to accept the job even contractual basis. There are some things not worth fighting for! There are some things that people need to accept and start to move on. If these PALEA members are truly concern with their company, they will not do the strike yesterday which made PAL lose a lot more money. So now, how do they expect their company to give in to their demands? The company will of course get better efficient people who are willing to take the job even for low salary. PAL is giving them options actually sila lang ang sarado mga isip. Again, beggars cannot be choosers!

  19. Ang galing 2:47pm.. Wag nalang puro awa. We have to think outside of the box. Business is business. Its not as if tinanggalan sila ng trabaho basta basta. They were given a notice and they will be compensated.

  20. Its a lie that pal took away the computers and radios. The palea people just stopped working and left their posts. There were passengers left inside planes already kaso walang ground personnel na nagaassist. and some planes also took off, pano mangyayari yun kung walang radios and computers? I was there yesterday. You think pal will do that to themselves? Its clearly a sabotage.

    "The truth of the matter is our fellow ground crew was not on strike yesterday....

    I am not only thinking of myself. Point of the matter is that, NAGSISINUNGALING ANG NAG-POST NITO.. HINDI SILA TALAGA NAG-TA-TRABAHO. HINDI SILA KINUHAAN NG RADIO.. NANDUN SILA PERO ITINIGIL NILA ANG PAG-TSE-CHECK-IN... BIGLA NA LANG SILANG TUMIGIL. ANO'NG GUSTONG MAGTRABAHO PERO HINDI SILA MAKA-TRABAHO AT KINUHAAN SILA NG RADIO??? HINDEEE!!!! SINUNGALING!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. It ony proves that these PALEA members are only thinking of themselves and wala silang consideration sa company na nagbigay sa kanila ng kabuhayan ng ilang taon or dekada. Where is their support to their own company if they themselves will make matters worst. It clearly shows na sarili lang nila inisip nila. The whole picture says, the strike they did yesterday was an uncivil! These employees should learn to give good service so the public will bring back their trust to PAL and in return will put PAL in good grounds again. Saan napunta ang ginastos sa kanila ng PAL to train them to put costumer service at it's best? Tama yung isang comment na beggars cannot be choosers. Walang pupuntahan ang pinaglalaban nyo dahil kahit ano pang mangyari wala na ring ibabayad sa inyo ang PAL so accept the situation and move on!

  23. I was one of those affected by what they did yesterday. They simply left their posts and stopped working. Period. They shouldn't lie just to get sympathy from the public. Kawawa? I googled and saw the renumeration those who will be retrenched will receive from PAL. Read these and think if they are really kawawa.

    For those who don't know yet, here's the renumeration package being offered to each of the PAL employees who will be retrenched:

    Separation pay equivalent to 1.25 month’s salary for every year of service;
    Additional gratuity of P100,000 per affected employee (higher by P50,000 per Malacanang order);
    100% commutation to cash of unused vacation leave and sick leave balances;
    1-year extension of the medical and hospitalization benefits;
    Trip pass benefits depending on the number of years of service.

    They should think of the commuters sana.Hindi yung mga sarili lang nila.
    Remember this adage? " Naghangad ng kagitna, isang salop ang nawala?.

  24. Reality is that FREE TRADE and GLOBALIZATION is in. The most efficient and cost effective way of delivering service is a MUST. If outsourcing is needed and a way to make Pal COMPETITIVE again then I'm all up for it.

    It's business after all. The company needs to survive in order to be number 1 again

    Unions must understand that managers will listen, but they must also know that if there is a way for a more cost effective way of delivering service then Unions must keep up the pace.

    i dont think MVP will buy PAL according to sources, siguro kukunin nya ang PAL if the price is right...kasi pag nag sabi sya ng intention to buy PAL mahirap na makipag bid ng gusto nyang price...at saka ang hula kong bilhin ni MVP is tot tot tot....yun lang

Good Comment!!! I salute you!!! Other people think for themselves only!!! Paano kung yung flight na gagamitin is work related? They are working in a service oriented industry. They should serve. Hindi mawawala sa kanila ang 20 years. Bakit? Dapat nga pasalamat sila may trabaho sila.

  31. To anonymous Sept 28, 6:59pm:

Dyan magaling ang Pal, magsinungaling and mang-isa.
    If Pal's severance packages and policies are good, how come lahat ng libi-libong employees nila, from pilots, flight attendants, ground crew at caterers naghihimutok at nag-strike? Lahat sila swapang except for yun iilan na Pal management?
Security of tenure ang gusto nila. Next thing you know, lahat tayong employees, contractual na lahat.

Sino namang tangang kompanya ang mag shut down ng operation and cancel more than 100 flights and lose millions of peso para gawin yun? No airline will do it! Bumenta na kayong mga PALEA members! Di na ubra paawa effect nyo! Pati public galit na sa inyo. Dapat eh tanggalan na talaga kayo ng work! Pasalamat kayo compensate pa kayo ng PAL.

  39. No matter the decades spent in a company, an employee is still an employee of a company. Not a part owner, not a major decision-maker. A company still has to consider viability, profitability and longevity in the business. Sometimes, decisions have to be made and there will be retrenchment or re-organization or re-structuring. That is part of the working life. If these things happen, hopefully they can compensate the employees as per MARKET standards.

    There is never security of tenure when you are an employee. Because you can always be replaced by someone cheaper or more knowledgeable. It happens even for the big investment banks down to small firms.

    I just hope these PAL employees realize that. The "pamilya" concept and "seniority first" practices do not carry over to the big business world.

PAL must be more strict pa nga e. It wasn't PAL who shut off operations. I agree na nagmamatigas mga empleyado nila.

  48. People, can we stop blaming everyone? Others say it's PAL management's fault. Others say it's the ground crew's fault. Can we stop blaming each other and start praying that this stops? Maybe other members were on strike. Maybe others were really trying to work but they didn't have the technical stuff they need to work. Only they know. But we should stop generalizing and say "all of them are at fault". What about those crew who were loyal and willing to work til the end? What about those other people from the 'management' who were also simply doing their jobs? You can't blame the crew for being angry, I mean c'mon. Read the past comments. And it probably was the company's workable idea to make the process contractual. Heck maybe it was one of the ideas of his adviser and he approved. We don't know. Just please people, put yourselves in the other person's shoes. I know you all are angry at what has happened, even with the passengers who had important appointments or whatnot. But nothing good is gonna come out of fighting each other and calling the other one a liar

    ReplyDelete
But look at it this way: What is all of that to someone who has been working for PAL for more than 20 years? Bibigyan mo ng trip pass ang alin? Makakapagbakasyon pa ba yang mga yan? I used to work for PAL, mababa ang salary. Maganda lang ang travel and medical benefits. Yan ang aalisin nila sa mga taong nagtitiis sa mababang sweldo (less than 20k for more than 10 years?) dahil maganda ang benefits. And for what? Para "makatipid"? Tha company has been trying to get the upper hand over his employees for the longest time. I have friends who work there. POINT 1: They just stopped working. YOU KNOW WHY? Kasi management had IT change their access codes. Di sila maka-log in sa terminals nila, ergo, di kayo maiche-check-in. Hindi nila sinabi sa inyo? Why? Kasi they are professionals. They still follow rules kahit sila ang ginagago. Yung nag-strike sa labas lahat yun naka-day off. Yung mga nasa loob, nagtatrabaho, hindi pinagtatrabaho. Yung mga nasa chapel, ni-lock in, hindi makalabas. You can say all the BS you want, but I don't work for PAL, and I never will. Sabihin nyo "ay, disgruntled employee". I'm not. I'm not even going to be anonymous because I'm not an employee and I have nothing to hide. I have friends (both ground and cabin crew/i.e affected and not affected by the strike) and they all share the same sentiments. Kasi bayad. Nababayaran ang media. Buksan nyo ang mata nyo sa katotohanan.

    Anu man ang privileges na nakukuha ng PAL employees, they earned it. They worked hard for that. So, wag isumbat yun. And your travel depends sa availability ng seats. And before saying something against the employees, be sure na you know the facts.

  51. G. Rodolfo, why not post your full name if you have nothing to hide? i'm not taking sides, i also know people who have been affected by the PALEA, friends who have worked there for a number of decades pa nga. by simply walking away without saying anything, hindi ba parang sinisiraan na din nila ang kumpanya? pangalawa, may plano na ang strike. PAL may have sabotaged those who were working (which i find hard to believe since kung hindi makasakay ang pasahero, isn't it that PAL will shoulder the cost of staying) but those who were supposedly on day-off, bakit andun? may mali ang management, yeah i agree, but to claim that PALEA did not strike, or they had a good reason to strike, is also a fallacy. hindi na nga gumaganda ang economy, hindi din nakakatulong that our flag carrier is experiencing problems. tanggalin na lang yan si L. give the employees what they deserve. kung outsourcing ang solusyon, so be it for as long as those affected will be properly compensated.

  52. I have a friend who works as one of the counsels of PALEA and FASSAP. Honestly guys, the PAL employees already won a PHP 200 BILLION law suit against PAL in the Supreme Court for illegal dismissal. I think the SC decision is fair. Imagine, these PAL employees have been working with PAL for DECADES. Then one day, without any mandatory notice of dismissal, PAL just took the ID's of these employees and didn't let them enter the airport. They were notified on the spot that they have been "dismissed." Imagine, the agony these hundreds of PAL employees went through considering that most of them have been working there for DECADES. Marami talagang hocus-pocus sa PAL management. I've seen and scanned through the records of the court proceedings and madami talagang anomalies ang PAL. Nakaka awa lang talaga yung mga employees because they've spent most of their lives working for PAL and yet PAL would just decide to let them go.

Ok naman ang separation pay ng PAL. Why don't they just move on? Tatay ko naretrench din dati and just spent the money wisely, kaya nakapagtapos pa rin kaming magkakapatid ng kolehiyo. Wala na talagang security of tenure in the global age, people must realize that.

  60. I have talked to one of the PAL employees. Those people in the counters were already served with termination letters effective 01Oct11 so their last day was supposed to be today. But last 27Sep, their codes to the system was already denied and they cannot access and prior to that some flights were already cancelled due to bad weather.

    Below is a video where they were being dispersed by hundreds of police, and on the sides are the people from admin (people who took off their codes without notice)that will take over their job for the day.

There was no proper turnover, bigla na lang silang na itsapwera.

  69. better check first the reason why they were on strike

    sabe nga diba, 'walang usok kung walang apoy'

    so meaning there is a reason behind it

For the PALEA members they should move on anyway they will be receiving severance pay naman, ganun talaga everybody is dispensable. Kahit sinong kompanya if it is not making money the only option is to cut cost and one of them is to retrench and out source.
